Just listened to Hushed and Grim at like 3 in the morning outside looking at the stars. Oh this album is a masterpiece for sure. When it finally hits, it hits!
Heres mine: 1. Death 2. Mastodon 3. Opeth 4. Lamb of God 5. SOAD 6. Children of Bodom 7. Slayer 8. Pantera 9. Slackjaw 10. Iron Maiden My favorite non-metal band would be King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
My top 10: 1 - Between the Buried and Me 2 - He is Legend 3 - Sylosis 4 - Porcupine Tree 5 - Alice in Chains 6 - The Contortionist 7 - Opeth 8 - Dream Theater 9 - The Mars Volta 10 - Pink Floyd
You really REALLY had me at the end! I KNEW you were going to say "And it should surprise none of you that my favorite band of all time is" but holy damn I was stunned into silence, then laughed so hard the neighbors called to see what happened! I was thinking around the 15 minute mark that it would be HILARIOUS if at the end you said "And my favorite band of all time is of course _________. Thank you for watching see you in the next one!" but you did me one better, nice job! Love all your videos, thank you for everything!
Always so happy to see a new vid, also super stoked to see all of the engagement in the comments- you deserve all the views. Semi-related- the Dallas show sold out before I could get tickets -_- so you don't get to live vicariously through me.
My top 20 1 - Nirvana 2 - Alice In Chains 3 - Stone Temple Pilots 4 - Death 5 - Pantera 6 - Obituary 7 - Korn 8 - Slipknot 9 - A7x 10 - Entombed 11 - Silverchair 12 - Seether 13 - Gojira 14 - Green Day 15 - Moonspell 16 - Soad 17 - Lamb of God 18 - Witchcraft 19 - Cannibal Corpse 20 - BFMV
My top 20: 1: Blind Guardian/Seventh Wonder (yes both, for completely different reasons) The rest are more of a rough order Sabaton The Gathering Seven Spires Dropkick Murphys Rise Against Unleash The Archers Metallica We Came As Romans Demon Hunter Future Palace Green Day The Bouncing Souls Alestorm Wintersun The Cat Empire Wind Rose Týr Ensiferum
Here’s a Top 15: Queen, Coheed, Yes, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Ice Nine Kills, Muse, Metallica, My Chemical Romance, Rush, Genesis (w/Peter Gabriel), Iron Maiden, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Mars Volta, The Beatles HM: Led Zeppelin
Listen to Hushed and Grim in the context it was written in. Their manager and friend Nick John had died from cancer and I think Brann went through some kind of really bad break up. Think of that when you listen, and I think you’ll find that an album doesn’t have to be constantly fast and loud to be heavy.
I did not know that! I’ll definitely give it another spin this week with that in mind. Thank you for sharing the background info. I feel like knowing that stuff really does make for different listening experience.
I would put Hushed And Grim up there as one of their best IMHO. Definitely up there with Crack The Sky and Leviathan. And probably their most diverse album yet.
My Top 20 Bands/Artists 1. The Beatles 2. Pink Floyd 3. David Bowie 4. The Doors 5. Black Sabbath 6. Johnny Cash 7. Led Zeppelin 8. The Smashing Pumpkins 9. Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats 10. Depeche Mode 11. Guns N’ Roses 12. Nirvana 13. The Alan Parsons Project 14. The Cult 15. Jimi Hendrix 16. Metallica 17. The Hollies 18. The Rolling Stones 19. Syd Barrett 20. The Velvet Underground
It would be cool of you to make a case for Color Behind the Sun, since the album has been growing on you lately I think it would make for an interesting video to discuss it's more positive qualities.
Im not really a "metal" metal-guy, but a hard rock guy. But good to see The Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin and Tool making your list. Probably my all time favs. You don't mention it much, but the musicianship of these dear people is out of this world. On the same note I wanna mention Primus, herb and brain and larry and lester :) I only know Crack the Skye, but love that album. Other "hard rock but also sort of metal" mentions for me would be SOAD, Audioslave, Soundgarden, RATM, Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Black Sabbath, and "definitely not metal" acts like Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Nick Cave, Talking Heads and Gogol Bordello. But i love all sorts, Stevie Wonder, Dead Kennedys, Bob Marley, Björk. All sorts :)
You mention you like melodic vocals paired with intense metal screaming. Im a fan of that style myself. Have you ever listened to Atreyu? They have 2 singers, one does the cleaner sounding parts and the other guy does all the screaming parts. Also the singer Brandon who does the non screaming singing he also is the drummer. I dont know of any other band who's lead singer is also the drummer. The sound and style of Atreyu has changed over the years but if your a fan of songs with both of those types of vocals in them you might want to check them out. I highly recommend their album "The Curse". In my opinion the curse is Atreyu's best album and its one of my favorite albums of all time. Its one of those albums you can listen to the entire cd. While some tracks are better than others, there really isnt any crappy songs on it either. From how you describe your musical tastes i think you would dig The Curse album by Atreyu. By the way awesome channel you have put together and im very suprised you dont have a bigger fanbase. Thanks for the great heavy metal videos!!
Thank you for the recommendation! I have heard of Atreyu but I have yet to really give them I a listen. I’ll definitely check out The Curse! And that’s impressive about the vocalist being the drummer. The only other band I know who does that is Mastodon with Bran Dailor on the drums. I’m constantly blown away by anyone who can sing and drum at the same time.
I know several drummers who are also "singers" (if growling and shrieking can be called singing). From the progressive metal bands, it is Brann Dailor from Mastodon. The rest is black and death metal. Proscriptor McGovern from Absu (now Proscriptor McGovern's Apsû), Dimitrios Dorian from Zemial, Chris Reifert from Autopsy. Although they are not "melodic vocals", but I don't care. Especially since it's metal.
As a little Swiss boy it warms my heart seeing Eluveitie on anybody's list of top bands. I got to finally see them live last summer here in Switzerland (along with Sabaton and other bands !) and it was amazing !
I recently discovered a (fairly) popular Swedish metal-something band called Avatar who I HIGHLY recommend. Check out the music videos for The Eagle Has Landed and Going Hunting. The former has a Viking Metal taste in the back of the mouth which I enjoy, the latter is just badass and I heavily enjoyed watching the video high. Also my favorite band of all time is Coheed as well :>
I have recur few requests to cover Avatar, but I have yet to check them out. I love Viking metal so I’m excited to give them a listen! Coheed will forever be the best band of all time-cheers! 🍻
Man I love your list. So many of these bands would be on my top 10 or 20. Coheed, Ne Ob, Fit for an autopsy and I absolutely love “the work”, it is a masterpiece. Thanks for sharing your list! 🤟
Saw Gojira in 2018 at Download, they were definitely the main reason I went. Was pretty sick, I still remember feeling the heat from the flames on the stage
Cool to see Opeth on here, that's definitely one of my top favourite bands ever, I'm literally sat here wearing my Still Life shirt as I watch this. 😆 I really really struggle to pick favourite bands personally, I just love so many different bands for so many different reasons and so many similar reasons. I'm mostly into Black metal and Funeral Doom though.
Cool list of bands! Have you thought about doing a deep dive about King Diamond or Mercyful Fate? I'm 45 years old and got into metal and Hardcore bands in the mid 80's and Mercyful Fate was one of the most Evil bands during the whole "Satanic Panic" days lol it definitely drove parents up the wall! I feel like metal has been more respected these days, back in the 80's we were outcasts for even listening to Metallica, Megadeth or even Ozzy. Then the whole Death Metal scene of the 90's was insane lol but the underground hardcore scene had the best shows and camaraderie!!
I have not yet covered King Diamond or Merciful Fate (although they are highly requested). I’m still trying to acquire the taste for the vocals. I’m not quite there yet, but one day I will! I would have loved to see the metal scene back in the 80’s, though I’m glad we’re not ostracized as devil worshipers (as much) anymore. 🤘🏻
@JJ Metalhead the vocals are great lol and I like how he uses different voices for each character in his story lines. Its like reading a novel by Stephen King or something. His band members on the King Diamond albums are really good even though the recording wasn't the best back then! It's definitely worth a read and listen!
Solid list! If I had to pick top 4 it would be 1. Dream Theater (took me like 6 years to really get into them. Super excited to see them in 2 weeks) 2. Wintersun 3. Insomnium 4. Ne Obliviscaris (my local Melbourne boys 🇦🇺) I did consider Rivers of Nihil one of my favourites but they're a bit too depressing tbh 😂 but they are fantastic musicians. Just wish they did one happy song lol.
I’m still trying to get into Dream Theater. James LaBrie’s vocals aren’t my favorite but I love them instrumentally and have great respect for them as a band. Lol I feel like “Monarchy” by RoN is one of their happier-ish songs.
Your taste is impeccable, I'm seeing C&C (again) tomorrow. And we Tool fans can be asshats, but keep up spreading the (low Key ) good word! Also, Hushed and Grim may not hit your buttons because (like newer Opeth, and ref my comment re Mastadon) it's their most mellow. But for my money it's their magnum opus. Please keep up the great work!
i dont know if i have a top 20 of favorite bands but mines are white zombie, alice in chains, van halen, warlock, the police, the go-gos, the pretty reckless, type o negative and hole.
My top 20: COHEED AND CAMBRIA(#1), Alice in Chains, Blessthefall, Saosin, Metallica, Atreyu, Paramore, Alkaline Trio, Megadeth, Soundgarden, Protest the Hero, Blink 182, Bright Eyes, A Day to Remember, Boston, Fleetwood Mac, Tegan and Sara, Brand New, Anadivine, Scorpions, Queen.
The best way i like to describe tool fans toxic nature is that its very similar to the rick and morty fanbase’s toxicity in were the fans that are way too into the show consider the people who dont get it stupid and that the show is too smart or complicated for them and they consider themselves smarter for getting it and liking it, i see allot of similarities in the tool fanbase but thats just my hit take lol, and as a tool fan id love to hear videos about them, great video.
I don’t watch Rick and Morty, but from what you described it sounds very similar to Tool fans. I’ll have to cover some of their music here soon, though I’m not sure I’m what format since they don’t have concept albums.
Here is my top 7, but to be quite frankly spot 1,2 and 3 could always change the spot with each other, because I love those three the most. 1. Metallica : The Band that introduced me to and got me into Metal. 2. Rush : The Band that got me into progressive and technical music and to be honest Geddy, Alex and Neil are/were all geniuses. 3. Death : The Band that got me into Death Metal and Tech Death. 4. Slayer : The Band that got me into more extreme Thrash Metal. 5. Celtic Frost : The Band that combined Thrash, Black, Death and Doom Metal into one Album before most of those Genres were a thing. 6. Sodom : My favorite Teutonic and extrem Thrash Metal band. 7. Megadeth : The Band that got me into more Technical Thrash Metal. As you can see I love me some Thrash Metal and There are so many more Bands I would love to list, but unfortunately I don't have the time for that.
Interesting list. Personally, my list would most likely be a crap ton of Death Metal and Black Metal, with a bit of bands from different kinds of genres I like. It seems like those 2 genres are what I gravitate to the most. But recently, I've actually branching out with genres I've never listened to before, or not really serious. To be specific, Prog Metal and Doom. I recently listened to a bit of Candlemass and Black Sabbath. The last one is more Rock, but they pretty much invented Metal and Doom Metal. With Prog Metal, I've been checking out Dream Theater, and I've listened to 1 or 2 albums of Ayreon. I pretty much have no limits to what I do and don't like. It's just a matter of whether or not I like it. Though in the past, I used to have more of a bias. Like Doom, for example. I used to think it's just slow and thus boring. I have listened to very little so far, so I can't say yet if I were correct on that. Now I just try to judge until I've heard something. Bit long, hope you don't mind reading all of this.
I haven’t listened to Candlemass in ages, your comment makes me want to listen to them again. It’s good to branch out. Also I’ve found bands that I didn’t care for years ago if I revisit them I might change my mind.
Incorrect! The first band that started using clean and harsh vocals was not Opeth but Fear Factory. Burton C. Bell would use both dry lung vocals and clean (albeit effect supported) vocals on alot of Fear Factorys music. Soon after, you had beauty and the beast style spring up, like Nightwish and Lacuna Coil which then gave way to one person beauty and beast vocalists like Courtney Leplante of Spiritbox and Tatiana Shmayluk of Jinjer. Alas, because Fear Factory is an Industrial metal band, I feel that they don't get enough of the spotlight as other metal bands do, even though they may have pioneered certain styling that were later made popular by other bands.
For me ranking my favorite bands is so hard. I know this sounds over the top but it's like picking my favorite child. I'll think yeah it's Coroner but then I'm like nah it's Morbid Saint. Then I'll be like man Rust In Peace rules, it's Megadeth. Then I'll be reminded nah it's Death or Deicide or Cannibal Corpse or Atheist or Nocturnus or Exodus or Uncle Slam or..... Thrash and Death Metal are my top 2 favorite genres/sub genres in that order. That much I know for sure.
@@JJMetalhead Definitely. Also, I totally understand what you meant with Led Zeppelin and prog. While not a prog band per se, they definitely had proggy songs and moments. They were for sure an influence on some prog bands that came later. Achilles Last Stand is my favorite Led Zeppelin song which is definitely progressive and there's definitely other examples. Speaking of Led Zeppelin have you heard Tool's cover of No Quarter? I dig it. (Don't worry I'm not a Tool fan I just like some songs they've done and covered lol).
Here are my top 20: 1: Korn 2: Slipknot 3: Mayhem 4: Sepultura 5: Suicide Silence 6: Lamb of God 7: Cattle Decapitation 8: Metallica 9: Shadow of Intent 10: Lorna Shore 11: Nile 12: Cannibal Corpse 13: Dissection 14: Deicide 15: Flukt
@@JJMetalhead Well, my list has changed quite a bit since last time, but yeah! Here it is: 1: Korn 2: Slipknot 3: Mayhem 4: Cattle Decapitation 5: Emperor 6: Sepultura 7: Flukt 8: Horizon Ablaze 9: Dissection 10: Darkthrone 11: Cannibal Corpse 12: Death 13: Immortal 14: Metallica 15: Shadow Of Intent (I couldn't have 20 bands, too many for me to rank hahaha)
Just like you, I have SO MANY favorite bands that it's impossible for me to lis tthem all here and much more impossible to list them in order. What I'll do instead is list which ones are my favorites out of the ones you mentioned on your list. I might include a few other names towards the end.. Bands from your list that I love and have had in my collection for many years: TOOL (since 2002top fave. . Btw, the answer is that TOOL fans are insufferable snobs, at least the ones you are referring to. I'm a huge fan of all of TOOL's music but I am not like the fans you mentioned. I'd be interested in seeing you cover some of their songs. Lateralus would be a great one to cover.) Led Zep (since 2004.) Coheed and Cambria (since 2007. top fave. I am one of the few who LOVE their non-concept album, so I'd be interested if you decided to cover it one day.) The Mars Volta (since 2010. LOVE THEM but ashamed to admit that I haven't given them the attention the ydeserve whe n compared to other bands. Samael te persigo a ti!) Mastodon (2010. another top fave. Crack the Skye is a masterpiece, as you alluded to. IIRC the first two albums are indeed concept albums, and it was after "Crack" that Brann decided to not focus on writing full-on concept albums.) Powerwolf (2016. don't listen to them as much as otehr bands, but i like them a lot!) Ne Obliviscaris (2016. like them a lot but don't listen so often because the violins sometimes give me a headache. I love violins but I am very sensitive to high-pitch noises. I have the same issue when listening to Iron Maiden, which I love. lol) Now we move onto bans on your list I like a lot but haven't been able to listen to too often, or have only recently discovered. Gojira (1017 but haven't listened to them a whole lot. Ashamed to say I keep forgetting I have them in my collection.) Ghost (2022. love them. fun band) Sabaton (late 2022 and discovered them because of you! great band. still need to listen to them more.) Queensryche (same as above!) Opeth (This band I've been aware of for nearly 20 years and NEVER gave them a chance until a couple of months ago when you said they are one of your favorites. Haven't done a proper full dive into them yet but the few songs I heard I liked a lot. Feeling optimistic about them.) Here are some of my top faves not on your list. It won't be all of the bands that I love but the ones that are very special to me. Heavy Metal: Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Dio, Melodic Death: Amon Amarth, Black Dahlia Murder, In Flames, Dark Tranquility. Symph Metal: Sonata Arctica, Avantasia Doom Metal :Draconian, Dark the Suns, Swallow the Sun Black Metal: Dimmu Borgin, Cradle of Filth, Mirrorthrone Thrash: Slayer I'm leaving quite a few out but that should cover most of my top faves that have been with me the longest. P.S. Sonata Arctica doesn't do concept albums but a lot of their songs have intricate stories, and some have stories that play out across a few songs in different albums. It'd be nice if you could cover those in the future! Thank you for sharing some of your favorite bands. There are a few on there I had never heard of that I'll have to check out in the near-future. Take care, JJ. :)
Always enjoy hearing your input. We have so many favorite bands in common, it’s no wonder we’re friends! I’m so glad you’re discovered new bands through me! I’ll think about covering Color Before the Sun here on the next few months. And maybe I’ll bite the bullet and do some Tool stuff-why not! I’ve heard a few songs from Sonata Arctica but I’ll have to dive into their stuff a little more.
@@JJMetalhead That's very sweet of you to say! I'll definitely be looking forward to see if you cover TOOL in some way, and how you decide to tackle it. :) As for Sonata Arctica, before you do a deep dive into them you need to know that they tend to change their sound somewhat drastically from album to album when compared to other bands. At the very least, approach them like you would a new Coheed or Mastodon album, where you already expect their sound to evolve in some way. Their first album is the one that is more "traditional" power metal, and their second album leans more into a more melodic, measured, kind of symphonic metal style. This is taken even further with their third album Their third album has a lot more slower songs. I remember when I first heard it I didn't like it all that much. It ended up growing on me after about a year or two and it became one of my favorites. As for their songs that have a story told through multiple albums, look for the wolves songs, and the Caleb saga. There's a reddit post titled "A Beginner's Guide To Sonata Arctica" which is outdated at this point but it's a good place to start. We should really add each other one day on a messaging app or something, like discord, maybe. Let me know! Take care and hope to talk to you soon.
@@GrimAhren Thank you for the background on Sonata, I’ll keep that in mind when I start listening! And yes we do! I don’t use discord hardly at all, but let me know how you want to keep in touch.
@@JJMetalheadYou're welcome! Have you ever heard Sonata's song "White Pearl, Black Oceans"? It's probably my favorite song of theirs, and it seems to be echoed by other fans, at least from what I read on that reddit post I suggested to you. I sent you an "email" by using your contact for mon your website-it has my username details in it. Let me know if you received it or not, in case I messed something up. Talk soon!
@@GrimAhren I have not heard that song but I’ll add it to my playlist! I did not receive an email from you. You can message me on IG and I can send you my email address!
I remember when I was like 15 (aka dumb kid) and my friends from school tried to get me into Coheed and I just dismissed it as whiny emo shit. Fast forward 20 years and I wound up being a bigger Coheed fan than any of them. First three albums are my jam but I like pretty much everything they’ve done.
It would be impossible for me to write a proper top 20 for me. I can mention a top 4 Opeth Katatonia Anathema Type O Negative There are also other bands that mean a lot to me like: Agalloch, Rotting Christ, Saturnus, Insomnium and MGLA
@@JJMetalhead Yeah ☹️... I saw TON on their last euro tour. Unfortunately Peter wasnt doing to well, so Kenny had to step in a lot in the vocal department
After listening about 2k times I can finally say that ladders of supremacy is indeed an anthem to be shouted every time you hear it. Further thought, everything coheed does is worth shouting when you hear it. Are we still children of the fence or should we start calling ourselves something else since vaxis?
@@JJMetalhead "Cliiiiiiimbing up the ladders of their supremacy!" is always chill inducing. One of my favorite songs of the album, if not my top favorite. Did you notice the sounds at the beginning of the song? To me it sounds lvery sci-fi, like we are meant to imagine spaceships closing in. I don't know what to call it. If I remember correctly, I think this song coincides with the part in the comic book where the Creatures are being ambushed by the enemy fleet, before they open the box that has they let out the Prize.
Good list! Of the ones you listed my favorites are Coheed, Animals as Leaders, Iron Maiden, Dimmu and Chon. Death, Testament, and Opeth I've only recently got into, like no more than 3 months ago. Still have to listen to them more but so far I am liking them! I'll have to check some of the other bands you mentioned. It's not everyday you see people who are into such a wide variety of metal. Metallica I like so-so. Used to like Sepultura back in 2002 but stopped liking them quickly for some reason. Same with Messhuggah.
"Let me know where I should start with Opeth's newer stuff." So bear in mind this is my opinion of course. Opeth is one of my top bands, and I think everything from Orchid to Ghost Reveries is pretty much perfect. Watershed was okay, but from the first listen, I kind of got the impression that something different was happening, and I wasn't looking forward to it. The three albums that follow Watershed - Heritage, Pale Communion, and Sorceress - I'm sorry to say, but they are absolutely terrible. Well maybe not "absolutely," but in reference to the standard that Opeth had set, I find these albums unlistenable. I like prog metal, and I like prog rock, I like when great bands try new things. But these albums didn't work at all. I tried to get into them, I really did, but every time I tried, about two songs in, I'd be thinking, "why am I listening to this when I could be listening to Still Life?" So I'm sorry to be a hater, but I do not like these albums. In cauda venenum is different. It is in the same vein as the three albums before it, but it's actually good. It's not classic Opeth good, but it's as if they stopped trying to be a rehash of a 70s prog band, and actually made something substantial of the genre. If they made another album like ICV, I wouldn't complain. As for Megadave, do yourself a favor, and don't bother with the new album, haha, it's really bad. I love old Megadeth, and I'm glad they're still doing what they love, but, erf, I just can't listen to anything after Cryptic, although some of the songs between TWNaH and Endgame are decent. Again, all just my opinion.
Do you have social anxiety? Not poking fun at all. Just noticed some things that I used to do myself. I don't suffer from it anymore because I'm just 100 percent antisocial now 😂
The Color Before the Sun felt more like a Claudio album than a Coheed album. I can respect the emotions behind the album but it just wasnt an album for me.
I'll attempt to rattle off my top 20. 1. Radiohead 2. Genesis 3. Pink Floyd 4. Megadeth 5. King Crimson 6. Opeth 7. Leprous 8. Mastodon 9. Faith No More 10. Alice in Chains 11. Porcupine Tree 12. Led Zeppelin 13. The Beatles 1 14. Soundgarden 15. The Mars Volta 16. Emperor 17. Dream Theater 18. Muse 19. Between the Buried & Me 20. Deathspell Omega I'm sure some of these could change easily and I'm sure I'm missing some major ones
@@JJMetalhead Yeah 10th grade for me they were my favorite band lol still hold a special place in my heart very similar to you except with my dad. I only recently discovered your channel definitely love what you are doing, keep it up!
The only order here is alphabetical… 1. The Black Dahlia Murder: these guys might actually by my favorite simply because of volume. Most of their albums are close to perfect for me. I’m still so sad that we lost Trevor. 2. Cannibal Corpse: I’ll probably lose cred on this one because I find the first three albums unlistenable even though THE BLEEDING is one of my favorite albums now. The consistency of their stuff is kind of the joke (“they just make the same record”), but, hey, every album is solid, the best are amazing, and they all have at least one song (most times multiple songs) that could fit on a “best of Cannibal Corpse” playlist. 3. Coheed & Cambria: I still have yet to listen to the newest album because I was catching up on the two albums before that, but Co&Ca don’t make bad albums. Every one is one I can listen to even though some, obviously, I love more than others. 4. Gorillaz: not technically a band, but Gorillaz is a musical “project” that I’ve been listening to since 2001. They dabble in so many musical styles and feature so many musical collabs that it feels like liking ten bands for the price of one. 5. Metallica: one of my earliest favs and a big reason why I got into metal. I hate being one of those “Metallica sold out!” people, but everything past MASTER OF PUPPETS doesn’t stick with me… but those first three albums are absolutely perfect to me, and I keep coming back to them year after year. 6. Misfits: this was where my love of music that covers horror themes began. Once I realized songs could be about zombies or psycho slashers, things were never the same. Their output is small, but what an amazing collection of songs… and Danzig I love too, but I’m too early in my listening to that band to call them a favorite (yet). 7. Queens of the Stone Age: another group who have never steered me wrong. There might be a band out there that sounds like them, but I have yet to hear that band. Their sound between the music itself and Josh Homme’s vocals is so unique. 8. Ramones: to be honest, I’ve never felt the need to listen to any Ramones album past their third because I feel like those first three albums so perfectly capture what’s special about the band. They hit me at just the right time as both a music listening and music maker. There will always be something special about the first band whose songs you can play all the way through (no matter how simple those songs might be). 8. Slayer: who doesn’t love Slayer, right? They’re tried-and-true for a reason. Their first five albums are one of the hottest winning streaks in metal and REIGN IN BLOOD will always be in the top 10 metal albums of all time.
Thanks for sharing your list! I also enjoy a lot of bands you listed. I’ll have to check out Gorillaz. I’ve not heard of them before but they sound like something I’d be into!
@@JJMetalhead that’s so cool! A new band to discover. Their big hit was “Feel Good, Inc.” which you might have heard before. They just came out with an album a week ago (Cracker Island) that, I think, is a pretty good jumping on point. PS: they might also be up your alley because while their albums aren’t really concept albums, them being a virtual band means there is a WHOLE BIG storyline about the band that is vast and wild. I can see you enjoying digging into all of that!
Coheed and Cambria are so frustrating for me. There instrumentation is brilliant like they are easily some of the best instrumentation players of the entire century. The vocals are stunning. The song writing is incredible. But my god I have no clue what the heck he is talking about half the time the whole story of the albums and band makes zero sense. Luckily it barely effects the music but still I would love to l know what they are talking about without having to do 12 hours of research. There first 2 albums are my fav by them and Welcome Home is a top ten song of the 2000s imo. Just wish they would give up the whole story already it’s enough. But amazing band.
What the actual eff? I finally move away from Nashville and pretty much 3 years later metal moved in! SOOO many musicians and content creators and blah blah blah😡😡😡
@@JJMetalhead yeah I finally moved to to open a studio. There's A LOT of metal bands down here. Most of the big artists still go to Nashville or LA to record but there's a premium here on artists trying to break into the scene.
Lot of great bands on this list, definitely some of my top 20 in there. One band that's been climbing my ranks fast that I only just recently started listening to is The Ocean. I love their albums Anthropocentric and Heliocentric, both completely perfect front to back in my opinion.
Just listened to Hushed and Grim at like 3 in the morning outside looking at the stars. Oh this album is a masterpiece for sure. When it finally hits, it hits!

If you like Alice In Chains I highly recommend Mad Season - Above if you haven't already checked it out.
@@SuperStrik9 Definitely familiar with Mad Season although I haven't listened to them a whole lot, will listen to them this week! Cheers
Hahahaha I’m glad you got a good laugh out of it!!! 😂
Always so happy to see a new vid, also super stoked to see all of the engagement in the comments- you deserve all the views. Semi-related- the Dallas show sold out before I could get tickets -_- so you don't get to live vicariously through me.
Thank you!!
And NOOOO!!! :(
We’ll each catch them on the next one:)

Here’s a Top 15: Queen, Coheed, Yes, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Ice Nine Kills, Muse, Metallica, My Chemical Romance, Rush, Genesis (w/Peter Gabriel), Iron Maiden, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Mars Volta, The Beatles
HM: Led Zeppelin
Great video! Wish you had given some album recs or song recs for each band.
@@JJMetalheadoh, one more thing, the face in the tree, on the cover, that’s Nick John.
I would put Hushed And Grim up there as one of their best IMHO. Definitely up there with Crack The Sky and Leviathan. And probably their most diverse album yet.

On the same note I wanna mention Primus, herb and brain and larry and lester :)
I only know Crack the Skye, but love that album.
Yes, absolutely the musicianship is out of this world! I enjoy a lot of those bands as well!!

Please, make some videos about Eluveitie. They're one of my favorite bands too.
As a little Swiss boy it warms my heart seeing Eluveitie on anybody's list of top bands. I got to finally see them live last summer here in Switzerland (along with Sabaton and other bands !) and it was amazing !
Sounds like and incredible show, I’m jealous!
Gonna do see Gojira with Mastadon and Lorna shore in Nashville in May. It's gonna be my fist time seeing any of them.
Gojira is an incredible experience, they're so damn tight and powerful live. Mastodon is also fantastic.
Saw Gojira in 2018 at Download, they were definitely the main reason I went. Was pretty sick, I still remember feeling the heat from the flames on the stage
Ya'll done got me all hyped and I still got 3 months to wait.😭

Great list! Some of my faves in there too.
Cool to see Opeth on here, that's definitely one of my top favourite bands ever, I'm literally sat here wearing my Still Life shirt as I watch this. 😆
I really really struggle to pick favourite bands personally, I just love so many different bands for so many different reasons and so many similar reasons.
@@jeffthejinjer I’ll be sure to check into more of their discographies. The vocals might have grown on me since I last listened.
Solid list! If I had to pick top 4 it would be
1. Dream Theater (took me like 6 years to really get into them. Super excited to see them in 2 weeks)
2. Wintersun
3. Insomnium
4. Ne Obliviscaris (my local Melbourne boys 🇦🇺)
I did consider Rivers of Nihil one of my favourites but they're a bit too depressing tbh 😂 but they are fantastic musicians.
All 4 bands are in my collection and they are all great! great list!
@@GrimAhren you have an excellent taste in music sir/madam 😎
Your taste is impeccable, I'm seeing C&C (again) tomorrow. And we Tool fans can be asshats, but keep up spreading the (low Key ) good word! Also, Hushed and Grim may not hit your buttons because (like newer Opeth, and ref my comment re Mastadon) it's their most mellow. But for my money it's their magnum opus. Please keep up the great work!
Thank you! And after giving Hushed and Grim some more time, I actually really love it!

Coheed FTW!!
A day to remember was one of the funnest shows I’ve ever been to-mosh pit was awesome!
Atlas is my favorite track off of The Color Before the Sun. So goooood.
Love the list! I don’t listen to a ton of thrash, but I have a lot of respect for it. Megadeth is one of my favorites.
Here's my top 10:
1. Gojira
2. Sabaton
3. Dagoba
4. Metallica
5. Megadeth
6. Omnium Gatherum
7. Velvet Darkness
8. Sortilège
9. Within Temptation
10. Imperia

The Mars Volta love! yes!
I know how you feel! My favorites list changes from day to day or hour to hour.

Never easy to do a list like this. you should totally do a reaction video for new Ne Obliviscaris. I classic rock I would pick Black Sabbath.
I might just! If not a reaction, maybe a review.
And I love Black Sabbath-mostly their first few albums. Gotta respect the grandfathers of metal! 🤘🏻

Color Before The Sun is underrated. Island is a song that means a lot to me personally.
I agree with you whole-heartedly. The album is great and so is the song you mentioned.
A video on Bedlam in Goliath, please! 😃
Coming right up! (…in a month or so 😁)
Just like you, I have SO MANY favorite bands that it's impossible for me to lis tthem all here and much more impossible to list them in order. What I'll do instead is list which ones are my favorites out of the ones you mentioned on your list. I might include a few other names towards the end..
Bands from your list that I love and have had in my collection for many years:
TOOL (since 2002top fave. . Btw, the answer is that TOOL fans are insufferable snobs, at least the ones you are referring to. I'm a huge fan of all of TOOL's music but I am not like the fans you mentioned. I'd be interested in seeing you cover some of their songs. Lateralus would be a great one to cover.)
Led Zep (since 2004.)
Coheed and Cambria (since 2007. top fave. I am one of the few who LOVE their non-concept album, so I'd be interested if you decided to cover it one day.)
The Mars Volta (since 2010. LOVE THEM but ashamed to admit that I haven't given them the attention the ydeserve whe n compared to other bands. Samael te persigo a ti!)
Mastodon (2010. another top fave. Crack the Skye is a masterpiece, as you alluded to. IIRC the first two albums are indeed concept albums, and it was after "Crack" that Brann decided to not focus on writing full-on concept albums.)
Powerwolf (2016. don't listen to them as much as otehr bands, but i like them a lot!)
Ne Obliviscaris (2016. like them a lot but don't listen so often because the violins sometimes give me a headache. I love violins but I am very sensitive to high-pitch noises. I have the same issue when listening to Iron Maiden, which I love. lol)
Now we move onto bans on your list I like a lot but haven't been able to listen to too often, or have only recently discovered.
Gojira (1017 but haven't listened to them a whole lot. Ashamed to say I keep forgetting I have them in my collection.)
Ghost (2022. love them. fun band)
Sabaton (late 2022 and discovered them because of you! great band. still need to listen to them more.)
Queensryche (same as above!)
Opeth (This band I've been aware of for nearly 20 years and NEVER gave them a chance until a couple of months ago when you said they are one of your favorites. Haven't done a proper full dive into them yet but the few songs I heard I liked a lot. Feeling optimistic about them.)
Here are some of my top faves not on your list. It won't be all of the bands that I love but the ones that are very special to me.
Heavy Metal: Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Dio,
Melodic Death: Amon Amarth, Black Dahlia Murder, In Flames, Dark Tranquility.
Symph Metal: Sonata Arctica, Avantasia
Doom Metal :Draconian, Dark the Suns, Swallow the Sun
Black Metal: Dimmu Borgin, Cradle of Filth, Mirrorthrone
Thrash: Slayer
I'm leaving quite a few out but that should cover most of my top faves that have been with me the longest.
As for Sonata Arctica, before you do a deep dive into them you need to know that they tend to change their sound somewhat drastically from album to album when compared to other bands.
Talk soon!

I can mention a top 4
Opeth
Katatonia
Anathema
Type O Negative
There are also other bands that mean a lot to me like: Agalloch, Rotting Christ, Saturnus, Insomnium and MGLA
Type O is a fantastic band. RIP Peter Steele 😢
I LOVE Ladders of Supremacy. One of my favorites on the album!
And I think we’ll always be children of the fence!
Solid List! Metallica, Brutally, Death, Coheed and Cambria, Testament, Meshuggah, Animals as Leaders, Gorguts, Iron Maiden, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Chon, Gorefest, Cynic, Sepultura,The Accussed, Immolation……..
Top 10 coheed and cambria songs? 🤔
Oh god no… that would take FAR too long. That being said, I’ll maybe do that video on the future lol
@@JJMetalhead haha I’ll definitely be looking forward to seeing that video
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I’ll have to give In Cauda Venenum a good solid listen through!
Do you have social anxiety? Not poking fun at all. Just noticed some things that I used to do myself. I don't suffer from it anymore because I'm just 100 percent antisocial now 😂
Yes I absolutely do!
@@JJMetalhead i know the struggle. Love the content!

I'm sure some of these could change easily and I'm sure I'm missing some major ones
Looks like we have a lot of favorite bands in common. Also, It's nice to see someone else put Zeppelin on their list!
@@JJMetalhead Yeah 10th grade for me they were my favorite band lol still hold a special place in my heart very similar to you except with my dad. I only recently discovered your channel definitely love what you are doing, keep it up!
The only order here is alphabetical…
Here are my top 5 favorite bands:
Metallica
Avenged sevenfold
Pantera
Slipknot
Slayer
Megadeth forever🤘🏽💀🤘🏽
Queensryche for me
Megadeth's new album is awesome.
I love Tool. How dare you mention them!
Iv seen Powerwolf live and they're BRILLIANT! You'll lose your voice tho.
You're not really a fan of black metal? or doom metal? or old school death metal?
I appreciate and respect those genres, but I don’t actively seek out music in those genres.
@@JJMetalhead doom metal is the shit

I’m kinda sad BTBAM didn’t make your top 20
So many bands, too short of a list!
@@JJMetalhead maybe in time BTBAM will make it inside your top 20. They grow on you with multiple listens
@@JJMetalhead BTBAM just announced they’re touring and performing parallax 2 in its entirety! You better attend, girl!
Rush > Led Zepplin. IMO. 🤷♂️
But, it’s your list, not mine 😁.
Lol to each their own. 😝
What the actual eff? I finally move away from Nashville and pretty much 3 years later metal moved in! SOOO many musicians and content creators and blah blah blah😡😡😡
Haha there does seem to be quite a few metal youtubers here in Nashville. But in my experience I don't really meet many metalheads in person here.
@@JJMetalhead yeah I finally moved to to open a studio. There's A LOT of metal bands down here. Most of the big artists still go to Nashville or LA to record but there's a premium here on artists trying to break into the scene.
Led Zeppelin aren't prog, just so you know.
Tool fans suck because they think they are smarter than they actually are because they listen to techie music
Ghost isn't metal, just so you know.
😂😂
Lot of great bands on this list, definitely some of my top 20 in there. One band that's been climbing my ranks fast that I only just recently started listening to is The Ocean. I love their albums Anthropocentric and Heliocentric, both completely perfect front to back in my opinion.
I think I gave The Ocean a listen a few years back. I’ll have to go revisit them.
