Getting pissed whilst making any kind of video carries an element of risk that it might all go badly wrong. Big thumbs up to Chris and Jordan for making, every year, great content whilst absolutely bladdered. Nobody else I can think of could do it. Classic again and loved it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.
Thanks for another year of nice and entertaining camera reviews and podcasts. Glad to see you guys landed well with Peta Pixel and look forward to seeing more next year. Happy holidays!
Camera Guess Who? Is an absolutely inspired idea. I want an app-based version that generates a random board from the full DPR database. Probably not a game with mass market appeal, but I think I could be a champion.
I stumbled upon this page randomly while researching cameras as I want to get into wildlife photography. You guys have made me laugh for sure and are helping me to narrow down what I'm looking for while also learning about photography. Thank you!
That M11 monochrom is the correct answer. Considering picking up the Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome, an entirely new system for me, just because the leica is out of my budget. I really want those beautiful black and white tones and crazy low light / better noise distribution from removing that color array filter.
You would get your beautiful black and white tones via playing around with e.g. curves in Photoshop or Lightroom. True analog-looking noise can only be achieved when photographing noise free at low ISO (or denoising higher ISO images), i.e. getting rid of any digital noise, and then simulate film noise with e.g. a dedicated plug-in. crazy low light? You wouldn't want photographing auroras in B&W? I haven't seen a single noteworthy B&W photo done in "crazy low light". Not worth taking. With a color camera, you keep decisive B&W benefits: 1- higher dynamic range (for high contrast scenes). This is achieved from the RAW converter's highlight recovery, which exploits that one or two color channels still have tonal information, while the brightest color already hits the histogram limit. A B&W camera (recording the sum of all colors) would be already clipped = useless there, while a color camera can recover e.g. bright white clouds from the not-yet-clipped color channels. 2- better high ISO results (lower noise), because denoising software has access to the color noise, and treats that particularly efficiently with dedicated algorithms. Whereas a B/W camera simply throws all color noise on top of luminance noise. Fox example, on a color camera, a noise outlier pixel will have a color, making it easy to separate it from the scene's texture, and to remove it. Whereas on a B/W camera, it is as gray as the scene's texture, therefore easily overlooked by a denoiser. Also, the next-gen AI denoisers require color images, they are trained solely on how noise appears on such images. 3- applying flexible color weighing when converting to B/W in postprocessing. For example, locally differently for different parts of the image. Or even negative weights for a color for more creative options. 4- removing the strong color fringing of Pentax lenses, with the help of the color of the fringes. Not possible with B&W cameras, where fringes would be white or gray fringes in their full glory, baked into the photo forever. 5- retouching, such removing distracting objects, or any workflow requiring masks: Only with full color (i.e. before B&W conversion), such masks (i.e. the objects selections) may have sufficient quality, or may be even possible. Furthermore, the next-generation ultra-high quality AI selection aids have been trained solely on colored objects.
The Pentax K3 III monochrome is indeed awesome. It’s a different experience. Those talking about converting image to BnW in Photoshop haven’t tried the camera. You have to work with the RAW images from the K3 III monochrome to see the difference. KobieMC channel and others have great discussions of the surprising results. Low light? Indeed, phenomenal. I own one and love it.
Thanks for another brilliant and funny best and worst, I am so glad you kept this tradition going. Although it is a bit early I wanted to say thank you PetaPixel for a great 2023 and Happy Christmas PetaPixel team. PS.
I was afraid this video wasn't coming this year, but I'm happy to see it. What I need t know is how many drinks Chris's had at the beginning of the video and how many at the end, maybe next year you can put a counter! I know I would appreciate it
Nikon really won me back this year after abandoning them for Sony 8 years ago. Great mirrorless options, the awesome retro Zf (which didn’t half-ass it), impressive colors, fast processors, amazing autofocus systems, what’s not to love? PS: These guys have more and more over the years become my go-to for camera reviews. Straightforward yet breezy and entertaining at the same time.
Im glad to see the xs20 got the nod. Ive been considering that or the a6700 so that's good to see. Also im surprised the Nikon Zf didnt get any love. Seems like the next x100v to me
With the R100 Canon really should've designed it more as a replacement for the M6, though a bit bigger with the mount diameter. Something like that paired with the RF 28mm would be a fantastic travel combo
It's absolutely mindboggling that Canon has such a large market share. The most expensive of any system when accounting for performance, the only system blocking 3rd party lenses, and much more dumb stuff. I hope Nikon can regain some of the market share they deserve.
Yes, the boys are back with their end-of-year drunken shenanigans. Thank you for yet another (I'm sure) highly entertaining vid. P.S. The Cube movies are Canadian? No shit! Loved that scifi series.
Dear PetaPixel! Please make videos for 2024. You got two guys who are amazing talent, and are instrumental in the photography industry. Let them create whatever they want! Thank you.
My dream, as a 68 year old boy, would have been to be there with you, right behind the camera, but to experience those moments of joy, and little alcohol with you, but I live on a small island very far from you. But I'm sure that one day we will meet. I follow you from Dp.Review, now you are on this magnificent channel, and I will always follow you. Warm greetings from the island of Capri
Great video and glad to see my S5II as the #1 video camera! Crazy that it's actually cheaper than the G9II on the holiday sale right now. It's a steal.
Some people choose the lens first and build from that on. Chris and Jordan, would you rather start with that Sony 20-70 and then pick the body or choose Lumix S5 ii(x) and go with an appropriate lens?
We were fortunate to witness only the "best worst cameras portion "of the video. Your categorisation is much appreciated, as without it, I might have bypassed the entire video. To be frank, the remaining content does not pique my interest. You both possess a remarkable talent for discussing cameras; for comedic relief, there are other UA-camrs we can turn to.
For monochrome, I can understand the Leica as a choice - but when you factor in price, the Pentax K3 III monochrome is a fantastic choice. You ought to get one to try it. Pentax user experience is unparalleled and the quality is excellent. The rangefinder experience is cool (I’ve worked with many) but if you want monochrome and not to go bankrupt, try the Pentax K3 III mono.
Holy Cripes that was hilarious 😅😂🤣. I was only waiting for Chris to put his arm around Jordan and, drunkenly slur out, "I love you man....😵💫", then puke on the coffee table. Too freaking funny, loved it 👍. Oh, AND I did take advantage of your discount to Audiio through your affiliate link sooo......yeah, you owe me a beer. 😁

The ‘boop’ at 6 minutes tho 😂
It's about body mass though - he's half the other guy's size !
I look forward to this post all year long!
For photographers, videographers, and camera nerds the world over - this is peak entertainment
Get them more drinks…. and let them debate…..I can bing on it till Christmas!!

Chris' lens-juggling abilities are terrifying
Terrifyingly amazing! I flip lenses better when I’m drunk. Didn’t even drop it once!

@@niccollsvideo- well, not in the clips that made the edit. ;)

You know Christmas is coming when Chris and Jordan do the yearly run down with drinks and games! :D
Also, you can't have Christmas without Chris ;)

Panasonic s5ii x. The one and only. Proud user of Lumix cameras since 2008. Never looked back.
All the X-S20 owners such as myself watching this video… 😂 Glad you’re still doing this episode.
I’m so glad this series (and you both) continues despite what had happened.

Chris’ competition suggestion for next year: “competitive reloading, target shooting.” [while drinking?]
Jordan: 😳
