I really think Chris and Jordan are probably the only photographic journalists who actually do use m43 gears during their leisure time and their setups are exactly what I often use also. The 75 1.8, the 12-100 f4, the 8-25 f4, those lenses are really sharp and relatively compact especially the 75 1.8 for what it is and the look it achieves. I am glad that they are talking about it more and make people think that hey m43 does have very good options. You don’t really need to go full frame to get good images.

I just came back from my Japan trip shooting with the OM-1 and also brought 3 lenses for my trip, but quite a different selection. (12-40 2.8), (40-150 2.8), (45 1.2).
Brought the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters with me as well to do some birding.
Very happy with the results, but I did have a few rare moments where I wanted something wider.

The 75mm 1.8 is killer. Unbeatable.
And the 12-35mm 2.8 is also great. OIS and small.

    For a great travel lens..
Full frame: Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8. It is large, but bright and good and huge range.

Loved hearing some love for classic underwater Olympus TG6. Just back from Great Barrier Reef and nothing newer goes in the pocket yet does underwater Macro nearly as well (GoPro is all wide all the time). That TG6 still gets it done and would like to see updated TG7 that is more than just rebranding.

I'm with Jordan on the Tamron 28-200. When I bring my a7vi or ZV-E1 for travel I take the 17-28 Tamron and that 28-200 and I am covered for most all of my photo and video needs. Great travel set.

I know the last guy said one lens but as an avid hiker the best Fuji setup is the Sigma 18-50 or Tamron 17-70 paired with the XC 50-230. The 50-230 is only 375grams adding tremendous versatility for little in weight and bag space.

  • @lensvana

The TG-6 is very popular in the scuba community - would be a shame if that lineup got discontinued. Maybe it's a niche market but there's no better entry level underwater camera - especially for macro / muck diving. And there's a clear upgrade path with tray, strobes, etc.

Just wanted to second what Jordan said about the Tamron 28-200 being a fantastic travel lens. I thought long and hard about buying it because I have an aversion to super-zooms, and thought there was no way it could be great. It turned out to be shockingly good.
It's amusing that Chris made fun of him for being a prime guy, because this super-zoom was actually Jordan's suggestion.

Regarding the question about lens for Fuji to take while hiking.
I had the same question once because I am usually doing 30-35 kilometers a day 10 days or 2 weeks in a row.
For myself I decided to go as light as possible - Fuji X-E4 and XF 16-80 lens. Than I even cut the weight and chouse XC 16-50. Not ideal for wild life, far from it, actually :), but for my purposes it will do.

Nice to hear some m43 love; the 12-40 2.8 and 75 1.8 are a solid combo. The 40-150 f4 is about the same size/weight as the 12-40 2.8, so if you took those two plus maybe a 45 1.8 or 75 1.8 for a faster option (I always toss in the 20mm 1.7 with how small of a footprint it has) you'd have 24-300mm in two zooms and the faster primes. The 12-60 2.8-4 PanaLeica was the higher end kit lens that does almost everything. The variable aperture moves towards f4 pretty fast as you zoom in, but it's still a solid lens, especially if you can pick one up bargain quality on keh or something similar. I'm content with the 12-40 2.8, 75 1.8, and the 20 1.7 if I really need to stay light. There is the 35-100mm 2.8 from Panasonic if you're good with 70-200 equivalent. The 35-100 4-5.6 is slower and variable, but tiny for what it's worth.

  • @Vinterloft
    @Vinterloft 11 місяців тому +1

For the final question (guy with the X-T4) I would actually go with the new 150-600mm. It's big but deceptively light. Rests well in a capture clip since it has a tripod heel. It weighs almost nothing. And if you absolutely must have something in the normal range (zoom with your legs, people) then just toss the pancake TTartisans 27mm F2.8 AF in your lunch box.

Loved the question from Wayne Goodman about the camera that you just won't get rid of. Honestly, I do have one or two of those. From my film days back in the 70's, it would be the first decent camera I ever purchased, the Nikon FM. That said, it's all about nostalgia, because that same camera was so unreliable that it is what kind of made me hate Nikon and switch to Olympus and Canon. In terms of digital cameras, it is definitely my Olympus OM-D E-M1. I have owned a number of digital bodies over the years from the E-330 to the E-30, the Canon 7D and the Canon EOS R. Honestly, as much as I LOVED the shutter sound on that camera (E-330 - the coolest ever!), it had to be just about the most frustrating camera in actual use. I recently and thankfully sold it to someone who just wanted an older camera. I had no trouble at all getting rid of the 7D. While it had some good features and could produce excellent images, I actually gave it away. The E-30 was more complicated. It was a great balanced camera. I did sell it, but I still miss it. Now as for the original OM-D E-M1, I really love that camera. It's 16MP, it's outmoded and I've worn half the pain off the body, but I still pick it up more than my newish EOS R. I doubt that I will ever sell it. The EOS R will go at some point. In fact, given Canon's stance against third-party lenses, I'm quite likely to get rid of it sooner rather than later and move lock stock and barrel to Sony. It's been a few decades since the Nikon FM disappointment, so I may even be tempted back to that maker with a Z series body, I just don't know. Once bitten, twice shy as they say...

I own an Olympus tg-6 and it's registered with olympus. They sent me a questionnaire last week asking what features i want in my next tough camera
To be honest there isn't much that can be improved in the tg-6. Maybe an improved sensor but it will still be the same size to keep the camera the same size. You can't put a larger zoom as that would make the camera bigger. All that can be improved is the processor and stabilization.

My favorite travel camera gear is the gear I already own. OK in seriousness, my Nikon Z7 II, 14-30, 24-120 and the 50 1.8 is my favorite travel combo. Covers pretty much everything I Need (obviously we need not forget other accessories like a tripod but for camera gear, those three lenses and my Z7 are all I really need for travel, and it's a relatively compact setup -- fits in a small camera backpack).

Great vid (as always). I'm travelling to the UK soon. Have the Canon R6, RF24-105L f4 and an RF16 f2.8. Not the lightest gear setup. Someone I follow is a wildlife photographer and does tours to some exotic places. He swears by the OM system and its lenses. Light and compact. Crucial when dealing with airlines' restrictive luggage and carry-on limits.

Agree with AWB statement. I will just add that glass and surraounding does affect colour tone as well. When it come to Sony i use Sigma and even Canon lenses on occasion that both have very different contrast and color rendition to some early Sony lenses. I wonder if it is some coating that they had in those.

When I travel what has worked perfectly for me the last number of years is an Olympus E-M1 MK2 and the 12-200mm lens (smaller and lighter than the 12-100mm). Because of the great stabilisation and large focal range I can take anything from reasonable macro shots of plants, mushrooms etc and even close ups of wildlife to general snaps of people and reasonable landscapes as the lens is pin sharp and if static I can use the 50MP highres shot mode. This would be even better with an OM1 these days. OM-System are certainly cameras suited most to travel stills photography but I am not video guy so they might not for everyone. At home I lug around a Nikon D850 and recently a new Z8 and big lenses that I could never fit in a travel bag. Viva OM-System!

Informative and entertaining, Chris & Jordan are always such fun to watch and listen to! And btw, here's another Samsung NX1 shooter, still loving the output of that camera (I have two bodies) and the NX 16-50 f 2-2.8, 85 f1.4, 50-150 f.2.8 and even the little 12-24 that gets a lot of use for architecture and landscape plus some of their assorted small primes. That being said, the not so great autofocus and low light performance isn't at all on par with the latest mirrorless *FF* systems and perhaps not even with the lastest Fujis anymore, and the same goes for at least some of the lens coatings, for instance the 85 1.4 that tends to show quite a bit of chromatic aberrations in high contrast situations - it's no PLENA by a long shot. The corner performance of the 12-24 isn't exactly great either (big sample variation though). I have been eyeing the Nikon Z system, a family member shoots the original Z7, and while detail and the depth of colour of the Z7 is better, the ergonomics are worse, the AF soso, and overall I didn't fid the IQ and performance worth switching, also as I can use the NX1 with its 15 fps and (cropped) 4K for occasional sports shooting. This equation may have changed now with the latest generation of allround cameras that are super fast and AF accurate while boasting a high IQ at the same time, like the Nikon Z8. Even when I switch systems I will keep the NX1 as it's still good and versatile and wonderful to handle, still going strong after neary 9 years and a ton of use.

In my experience, the TG-6 and it's predecessors, are the most widely owned cameras amongst professional ecologists, entomologists and similar, who are not photographers, and who use them primarily for record shots. It really is terrific for them, rugged, indestructible, great macro, with focus stacking and of course you can even use it underwater. It would be a great shame if this line of cameras died out. Okay, it's not a big niche, but it is an essential tool for them.

My family vacation: olympus tough tg6. In my pocket rhe whole time. Under my life vest when i did white water rafting and i jumped in the river. In my pocket when i went mountain biking. I didnt think about it the whole time and it took excellent images (that are gps tagged which is great so i know where i was at the time later).
I also had an olympus e-pl 10 with a 14mm panasonic pancake lens. This i kept in my day pack if i wanted the highest quality images. Its also great for selfies with the flip screen.
This kit is all i needed for my family vacation and i am 100% satisfied with the results.
Outside of vacation i shoot olympus m43 when when i am out and about. For studio type shooting i use nikon d800 full frame.
The full frame is only used for 2% of my shots, the lenses are just too big compared to m43.

Also the locking mechanism sometimes refuse to lock properly which puts you in danger of colapsing one leg together with whole tripod. You have to be super careful with locking the legs to avoid it.

Hooray! Was beginning to worry wouldn't see a Peta-podcast today - and in desperate need of a palate cleanser from all the political/climate doom clogging up my YT feed. You guys look jolly
Edit: After hearing about coffee Baileys and wine drinking, no wonder jolly! Wise words from Jordan - "When camping, happy hour starts any hour". Couldn't agree more

Lenses? The TG 6 (s) I have…two auxiliary (bayonet) onto the bodies. Wide/macro and a telephoto… I wish the tele was longer or I could adapt another longer one? OMDS are you listening?

  • @robertnystrom289

Another good one! I would agree you can with some effort get different body / manufacturer 'looks' kind of about the same- especially jpeg- with some post prestidigitation. But I think that's a high bar to get lenses to look the same. Lenses have so many different signatures that I'm not sure it's possible. The Leica 'look' is part body interpretation- especially with the shallow light angles on M lenses- but mostly a lens thing. I've not had much success with getting my Canon lenses and Leica lenses to agree. Yeah, the overall color balance can be tweaked, but I can (most) always tell the Leica lens shot. Doesn't mean it's 'better', it's just different. For what it's worth!

The Nikon Z has a more Leica-like signature than Canon R/RF. The Canon R/RF has a very digital signature. The Nikon Z has a more film-like signature.

I definitely think that having technical knowledge matters. You do not need to be an expert, but you should know the basics.
I spoke to a freelance photographer the other day who did not know that her A7III was full frame, and did not know what lens she was using. I was absolutely blown away by the conversation.

The original soap bubble bokeh lens was a Trioplan 100mm 2.8 from the east german manufacturer Meyer Optik Görlitz. Schneider was not involved as far as I know. Jordan is right, there is a remake of these old (flawed) optics.

TG series is very niche but i think there is a ton of loyal user. i study ornithology and spend a lot of time out in the wild doing field work, and we have a few of TG and they serv us very well. tons of people in ecology community are using them. it always work, lightweight and easy to use, and the best part is it have a build in GPS
i think maybe it have something to do with it just not dying and user don't feel the need to upgrade to new ones. in our lab our TG went through hell and back but they just keep working. and for our use we really don't need some great sensor or lens, we need it to always work and document stuff to put in research paper or data base, no need to get fancy. one of my friend is in the entomology next door and they are still using TG-4s,they don't feel the need to upgrade anytime soon

Great episode! Chris you mentioned the Olympus 12-100 f4 pro, have you tried the Oly 14-150 ii? It’s not pro, but it’s lighter, more range on the long end (little less on the wide) , much cheaper and some people say the image quality is almost as good. Curious to get your take as I’m deciding between them.

It is a decent lens! I feel with micro four thirds it's even more important to get as fast a lens as possible, but optically the 14-150 is nice and sharp.

If I'm at the beach, I have my Tough camera (TG4, TG6). They are fantastic when photographing in the surf or just swimming. I just can't see anyone getting these kind of shots with a phone. If Olympus finally brings us a TG7 with a bigger, faster sensor, I will buy it in a heartbeat.

15-20 miles per day is impressive, but many long distance hikers on the PCT and AT do 20-30 or more miles per day to be able to complete the 2000+ miles of these trails in one season. I'd bring a Sony RX10 IV or a RX100 VI/VII if I was going to do a long distance hike now. Or an OM-5 with 12-200 for an interchangeable lens camera. IMO easy access and fairly light equipment is more important for good photos than absolute IQ when hiking long days. I'd never bring a second lens on a hike like that.

As for an interchangeable lens UW camera, Nikon should bring back the Nikonos line and make use of their already excellent UW lens designs. That original 15mm lens was the ultimate. With the 45.7mp sensor, the compact form factor and hopefully light weight, they should sell pretty well.

Hi @@gemmawatson6100 - no I haven't. I love it being ultra wide, however it is too expensive, I don't have the chance to capture the stars that often where I live (Scotland, overcast, etc heh). I have an EM-10 mk II and an EM-1 mk II. I tested my panaleica 15mm at night, on my EM-1, for street photography and it was already super wide. I also have a 12-40 f2.8 where most of the time 12mm is already wide enough to my taste.
