Finally, after many years, I was able to find a channel that doesn't show a kid right out of the diapers, repeating street photography rules that were said decades ago, showing off their latest gear but not one single useful word about art. Thank you so much for giving quality references and presenting these artists with the respect they deserve. I hope it serves as a true inspiration to newcomer photographers and that it teaches them to look at the images that are everywhere instead of keep looking at their gear.
People spending thousands of dollars to buy the most expensive camera… and this man is shooting with a $200 old canon camera… just perfect. Congrats for you amazing job.
Out of all of the photos, the most intriguing one for me was the top-down shot during winter of the woman and the walker. The minimalist use of empty space was quite captivating. ❤
I'm not a photographer, but I watched till the end like my life depended on it! While I was staying dry and cosy under the blanket, you went out there, shot in different conditions, and brought up all these brilliant ideas. Impressive work, and I loved the quoted interview in the end, as a conclusion. ❤
You have done a masterful job with Saul Leiter, capturing both style and technique. The atmosphere of colors, frames, and reflections is reminiscent of the master you are attempting to emulate. I think this is one of your best efforts in imitative photography.
Maybe I haven't seen enough videos on UA-cam or read enough. But this is the first time I've seen a breakdown of how someone took their photos. Great stuff!
When you mentioned how much he utilized winter conditions I expected you to end it there and advise we give that a try. The next thing I know you’re waiting 2 months till winter to actually demonstrate using Sol Leiter’s techniques in winter - RESPECT 👏👏👏
I love your series on Imitative photography. These videos are both educative and inspiring. I hope you keep making them. You are a great educator as well as an excellent photographer.
I’m a huge Saul Leiter fan. Not sure what it is about those Jewish guys but 4 of the 5 of my favorite street photographers are Jewish. I actually think that your red umbrella shot is right up there with his. Well done man. There were a few other shots you took that were very strong. And thank you for not corrupting society 😄.
A great video, Saul Leiter's work makes me wish I could have lived in those times for some reason. But the job of any photographer, hobbyist or professional, is to document the world as it is when they are alive. Leiter certainly did this to perfection. Keep up the great work.
Your videos are excellent! They are a fantastic way to educate photographers. Sometimes photography content can be difficult to relate to, but you do such an impressive job at breaking down the artists core features.
Great video. I was feeling a bit bored with my street photography and now feel inspired to get out in the cold and try a new approach. Thank you! Going out in Boston looking for red umbrellas.
This is what photography content should be. On the off chance you and The Photographic eye dont know each other (or a comment looker isnt familiar) I honestly think you two are the very best youtube photography channels. Just sharing your passion and knowledge and reverence, and making me feel like im geeking out with a fellow camera nerd. Not to mention making me, self confidence issues and all, feel like I CAN shoot like Leiter, someone I admire deeply. And, lastly, *especially* not telling everyone the gear doesnt matter immediately before an ad read for a Canon R3 and the corresponding 24-70 for it. 🙄 every time I see basically every channel do that my heart breaks for new photographers. Newbies if you see this, just get the camera you can afford. You don't need $10,000 of camera equipment. Use what you can and shoot for the love of it. Hell, the film camera I use was just one I was given for free in an upcycle group. Ask around, people are generous and kind. Youre doing a really great thing here, thank you. Im actually on mt way to downtown right now (also live in Pittsburgh, just like Leiter!) Your video inspired me to go shoot and see what I can do. Leiter has always been in my top 3 but seeing a breakdown of his style like this just did so much for me. A thousand thanks 💜
Bravo. Leiter is my favorite photographer. But I seem to be overwhelmed when i think of trying to do something similar. But, your concentrating on anchor and abstract, red and yellow, negative space and nostalgia is a smart way to start. Your commentary, stories and photos are an inspiration. Looking forward to the next rainy day.
Very nice, thank you. Retired 70 year old here, photo hobbyist in the 70's and 80's, was going to pick up a camera again, but digital menus turn me off. I will check your other videos out, thanks again!
I absolutely loved watching this! Stumbled across it randomly and watched the whole thing! Please make more of these! First class. Well worthy of being televised imo. 👌🏼👍🏼
Just discovered this channel. Can’t believe I’m just finding it now. These videos are equally informational and entertaining. Well edited, well written, great content, clear and concise. 10/10 might be my new favorite channel.
WOW! One of the best videos about street photography ever. So well made, nice edited, just perfect. And I can imagine it was not so easy with a manual lens and umbrella to operate all :D
I really learn a lot on how you plan the images far before you took the shot. Having a reference and stick to it, and you accomplished to get wonderful photographs. Thank you for such valuable lesson.
I had always loved photography. A picture is almost a slice of a reality that stopped being, the moment you decided to look at it. I never picked it up, professionally, during my teens or twenties. I'd just take photos of things I liked, because they represented moments I wanted to remember. Nowadays, I've joined a business and have, through necessity, rekindled my love for photography. I bought an old DSLR and a lens I heard was good. It's like rediscovering an old friend that never stopped being close. I'm almost surprised to know my own personal outlook on images and things was shared by someone who created what I could only call "moving pieces of beautiful art". All I take now, are snippets of my coworkers and artists with dreams of their own. Perhaps, through practice and self discovery, I too can create moving and beautiful art of my own. Thank you for the video.
Thank you so much for introducing me to Saul Leiter! I am a photographer and will admit, I don't follow much if any photographer outside of one - Jim Brandenburg. I've loved Wolves since I was young. He is a master at that. But he's also someone that didn't take conventional shots. Which attracted me even more. Now, this is something that is more MY style. I look forward to learning more about Mr. Leiter. And becoming more of one to go into oblivion. 😉 Your winter shots from above got me emotional. Made me a little homesick for Chicago. Some of the best winters I've ever experienced. I also think you did a fantastic job with your "imitation" shots. Oh and great editing in regards to this video!!! NEW SUBSCRIBER!!
Thanks. Such a moving video ... the music suits the melancholy and mood of Leiter's work. I was fortunate to view 4 prints in person at Milwaukee Art Museum, which produced Leiter's first solo museum exhibition in 2006, 'Canopy' among them. What a thrill. I lived in NYC for 20 years, recognized the street corner, but was unprepared for its matter of fact gravity. The figures were rendered so precisely, it could have been any snowstorm anywhere anytime, but it was that moment in 1958, a perfect timelessness.
Another excellent video. There are so many UA-cam photography charlatans, self-labelled street photography 'experts' and vloggers with hundreds of thousands of subscribers who only ever produce very average work accompanied by crappy video content. The influence they hold frustrates me when there are far better and more educational channels like yours out there. The time and effort you spend both researching and then photographing, not to mention editing, is to be commended. Yours is one of those channels all photographers should watch, be they experienced or new because, if nothing else, you inspire us to go out and experiment. Keep up the great work.
Brilliant, inspirational, educational. I started to shout in my head, "shoot now" as you allowed images to unfold from the bridge… the meeting of red light and street car. Your final shot with red umbrella… that one will stay with me. Will be revisiting this video as I do your others.
LOVE the shots at 17:22, 18:30, 20:06, 22:45…and who knew that Puritan influence would enhance your photography?? Great videography and “mood music” selection.
The title came up as a suggestion and I thought 25 minutes I"ll check it out, quickly... and stayed the entire way through. Very well done I'll be checking out more of your work. And I've got some inspiration to try some new things.
This really shows how good a photographer Saul Leiter was. Even though the imitation images match the technical/compositional aspects of the original photos. They totally lack the conceptual and meaningful stories the original images tell. That's not to say they are bad photos, it's more a testament as to why the originals are so good.
I agree with this comment. The video showed such an in-depth understanding of what made Saul Leiter's work unique, brilliant and captivating. Even though I have studied his work extensively, I learned more from the analysis on this video. Yet when it came to trying to imitate the style, the images fell short. I'm not surprised, I have tried to create Saul Leiter's images myself and whilst I can get reasonably close, I just cannot achieve the SL genius. That's because his work was so multi layered. It's hard enough to capture one aspect of his images, but trying to incorporate so much into a single frame, and then also get the right colours and contrast right, is too hard for me. The fact that SL was such a humble, unassuming man, makes his work all the more appealing to me.
Such a great respectful and inspiring presentation. Capturing the essence of Saul Leiter images not easy. The image at 17:17 is brilliant, really in the spirit. Well done. Love your work!
Bravo my good friend ... I am speechless when coming across this episode luckily. This holiday season, I decided to go on a splurged and paid $300 for a discontinued Saul Leiter's Early Colors which I have been longing for years. Watching someone taking months to capture the moments on the street in Leiter's style and paying our tributes to this great photographer is a wonderful feeling. Happy holidays!!!
I’m very glad reaching out your channel. I saw all your pictures and I called it Miksang Contemplative Photography. I also have the similar taste with you. Someone didn’t see and we see it. Waiting for another video… ❤
Mate, I forwarded this video to my friends and told them to watch all the videos on this channel. Instead of just watching all the videos, they went out after this one and filled up my WhatsApp with their Saul Leiter photos, and I'm surprised at how good the photos are!! You're an absolute inspiration and a wonderful teacher. Thanks for taking the time to show us new perspectives in photography. I know we have books and the internet to help us, but you go outside and practice what you preach, which is a great help to be able to find those kinds of shots. You're fabulous 😁👍
@@ImitativePhotography I'm trying hard to get you more subs!! I want more people to learn how to take more interesting shots, and see how easy it can be because you explain things so well😁👍. I look forward to your next video 🤩🤩
Stunning pictures which capture the essence of Saul Leiter. Interesting background details of Saul Leiter's work and your process. Thanks so much for making this video.
You’re an amazing gift to humanity, I hope you know how much inspiration and impact your content has on those who truly appreciate it who share the same world as you
Perfect video about the man, the artist and the photographer. I enjoyed every second of it. Thank you for the work you put into this and for sharing it with us.
What a wonderful way to more fully appreciate and learn of the work of one of my favorite artists. Beautifully put together. And the music accompanying the snow scenes where you are shooting down from above of the building entrance…very special. Thanks
Wonderful video! Great to see a video not just educating us on a legendary and inspirational photographer, but you actually went out and provided us with practical real life examples of how the inspirations can become realities. Kudos to you! Well done.
My photographer friend introduced me to Saul Leiter (whom I'd never heard of) so I Googled the name and found your video. It's superb in every way and, although I'm not a photographer (but love photography and art), I was absolutely mesmerised by the content and the way you approached the subject in a logical way. It certainly made intelligent viewing. As 'followtheboat' said, "There are so many UA-cam photography charlatans, self-labelled street photography 'experts' and vloggers with hundreds of thousands of subscribers who only ever produce very average work accompanied by crappy video content." ... this is what UA-cam should be showing. And, what made the video even better, is that your voice is so good to listen to. Thank you. Needless to say, I've subscribed.
Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed this. My photographic style naturally tends to lean this abstract way of reflections, layers and obscurity but I always feel like I’m doing things “wrong” - perhaps I just observe things unusually. Loved your video style of discussing the history, showing Saul’s work and going out to experiment with it yourself. ✨
One of the most well put together videos I have seen and a real insight. It's inspiring and informative 👏 really gives you that passion and drive to go out. Now time to find myself a manual lens to try out. So glad iv come across this as such a big fan like so many of Saul.
I am glad that UA-cam recommended your channel. I can finally start to unshroud the mystery of Miksang photography by looking through this lens and adding some grammar to explain my process
They put all the corrupt drinkers in the same tent? That’s how revolutions start! Love your videos. Down to earth, subtle humor, and great flow. I enjoy learning about these great photographers and seeing your process - it is inspiring!
Yet another excellent video. I love the way you break down the work of key artists, and fuel us with the inspiration to further explore our own creativity.
I did not know about Saul Leiter, very inspiring. I'll try to incorporate his approach more in my photography. I found a picture i took the other day that i wasn't really satisfied with, but after seeing the work of Saul Leiter, i can see a resemblance to his style. I like it a lot more now. Thank you for the video.
Love Saul Leiter and this is an amazing work about him and his art that makes me understand him much better. Explanation of how he creates his composition is such a good reference for a young photographer. Thanks a bunch. 💘
I love watching these videos. First I learn about a brilliant photographer, and then it's like I'm in your head as you're out there figuring out what works as you go, always on your feet. This is an awesome channel.
Excellent work. It's occurred to me now after so long that Leiter has been an inspiration to almost every street photographer I've seen online. It's a timeless trend that I don't think wears itself out like other styles. It's also the style I was trying to unknowingly imitate, and now I think I have a good chance of obtaining similar shots. Thanks for the video!
I really like your videos and the way you explain the theory and how to put it into practice. The explanation of the concept of the anchor and its opposition to abstract elements, as well as Saul Leiter's use of negative spaces, has been very brilliant. Thank you very much for your work.👏👏👏👏
Photography for many has become forgotten, art form. Nice to look at people in the past who viewed his photography as his art, and we were able to cut out of the everyday world, something beautiful and unique and interesting that we all walk by every day, but never stopped to look. And he humbly captured it for others to see and enjoy. Thank you for this unique inspiration which I will apply to my own photography and unknowingly have been doing over the years as I like many of these same elements that he used. Regards Gerry
I really enjoy your information and exploration, your calm presentation and the inquisitive nature of the video. I appreciate you breaking down the style and giving a real life look into your own exploration of it. This is very revealing. I'm commenting as I'm approaching the end of the video, and I find one big point is that there really is an invisible factor too, which is always the story within the artist (the photographer in this case) that makes the image. The intention transports something that we cannot directly see with our eyes and I feel like I can see that this is at the heart of Saul's work. You can recreate his style, but it only works in part, because the story is missing.
I really enjoyed watching this. You have done a great job of analysing Leiter's images and showing how similar effects can be achieved. Thanks very much.
Thank you so much for putting the time and effort into this video , most enjoyable and also a rare video on here that is not selling gear . So refreshing, please keep this style 🙏🙏🙏👍👍
I think you video is very inspirational to other photographers like myself. I do a lot of street shooting, now I am going to look at other obscure compositions rather than the normal, CHEERS!
I recently discovered your channel and I am shocked by the quality of your content. Your what-why-how approach in photography and the photographers behind is magnificent!
Very nicely done. I've intuitively been drawn to some of these techniques and absolutely love Saul Leiter's photography that you have introduced me to with your video. Love the conversational pace of your talking, the quotes, and music. Also thanks for reminding me how fun it is to do street photography, and how I miss that exhilarating sense of being in the moment, seeing a photo before hitting the shutter. Happy to subscribe.
You really nailed a few shots, that looked a lot like Leiter's work. Especially the red umbrella, but I have a feeling you knew that (by placing it last on the list of photos you took). You could have used the Picture Styles on your Canon to emulate expired film, but perhaps that was beyond the scope of your project. Keep the videos coming!
This is excellent ! I really appreciate the way you describe the photographer first, and then go out and shoot. You're photos are brillant like the process ! Best regards 💫
Amazing video, brilliant exercise great photos. Pacing of this video is just right! From Michigan, would be great to visit Toronto for a photo walk! Learned about a new street photography legend today! Thank you!
This is what we/(I) have been waiting for. A genuinely beautiful, considered video about a really interesting photography subject. Totally enjoyable and really useful. Thankyou.
I love your presentation. Especially your commentary.
I enjoyed your comments on the Puritan drinking laws.
i agree so so much
Well said
exactly
Dipper ?
The sole fact that this video took months to come to life speaks loudly about the effort you put in. Well done Sir.
This is what UA-cam content should be, but rarely is. Your channel is able to be both informative and meaningful, and that's a huge feat of talent
Honestly that's one of my favorites from all the photos as well
I'm not a photographer, but I watched till the end like my life depended on it!
While I was staying dry and cosy under the blanket, you went out there, shot in different conditions, and brought up all these brilliant ideas. Impressive work, and I loved the quoted interview in the end, as a conclusion. ❤
Wonderful, glad you enjoyed it!

What he said…. ;) I would also like add Sean Tuckers channel to this.
no greater form of art than interesting photography, a fisheye lens in that above street walkway would be fabulous

This video made me buy a Saul Leiter book on the spot. Well done friend, well done.
Amateur boring but happy photographer here. Loved this, so inspiring, beautiful and unexpected. Well done.
I am so happy to find this channel finally someone talks about photography and the art it is!!
You're the best youtube channel for learning photography
I really learn a lot on how you plan the images far before you took the shot. Having a reference and stick to it, and you accomplished to get wonderful photographs. Thank you for such valuable lesson.
Beautiful homage to Leiter and his work. Thank you for taking the time to produce it with such a great narrative. Great work!

Can't decide if the narration is done in a Canadian or Scottish accent.
Fascinating summary of his work. The quotations were also great.
Such a great respectful and inspiring presentation. Capturing the essence of Saul Leiter images not easy. The image at 17:17 is brilliant, really in the spirit. Well done. Love your work!

Wow, nailed it with the last shot, the red umbrella in the snow. Congrats! Awesome video and an incredible amount of work.
One of the most well put together videos I have seen and a real insight. It's inspiring and informative 👏 really gives you that passion and drive to go out. Now time to find myself a manual lens to try out. So glad iv come across this as such a big fan like so many of Saul.
Excellent! This is worth watching over and over! Thanks for taking me along!
I am glad that UA-cam recommended your channel. I can finally start to unshroud the mystery of Miksang photography by looking through this lens and adding some grammar to explain my process
Thanks
So nice to find a channel on photography that's really informative, so grateful for the research you appeared to have done for each subject.
Thank you! Really appreciate your support.
Love your renditions of Saul's canopy photo! It got me clapping with joy and a big smile at my desk hahaha
😁
They put all the corrupt drinkers in the same tent? That’s how revolutions start!
Love your videos. Down to earth, subtle humor, and great flow. I enjoy learning about these great photographers and seeing your process - it is inspiring!
🤣🤣🤣
Wonderful video and inspiration. Combining the artist and live shooting. Great music and visual perfection. Thank you 🙏
One of the only channel notifications i actually look forward too. Something about trying to recreate the work of these greats feels so thrilling!!
I loved this. It reminds me of what i look for. Its like mirroring wavelengths listening to you explore. 😊
Your passion for your subject is truly admirable.
Love Saul Leiter and this is an amazing work about him and his art that makes me understand him much better. Explanation of how he creates his composition is such a good reference for a young photographer. Thanks a bunch. 💘
Dude this location your at is simply amazing. No matter what season your shooting in. Love your videos keep up the great work sir...
I love watching these videos. First I learn about a brilliant photographer, and then it's like I'm in your head as you're out there figuring out what works as you go, always on your feet. This is an awesome channel.
One of the most inspiration photography creator on UA-cam. Thank you
One of the best videos on photography on UA-cam...thank you!!! Very inspiring!!!
You have a great photography channel. I am so glad I camr across it. Looking forward to more of your videos.
That's great to hear, thanks!
I'm amazed by your extensive effort to reproduce such important photographers work. I'll give a try.
Thank you for this content.
I appreciate the care that went into the making of this video. Very inspirational!
What an incredible film and way to honor Saul's work. Thank you for the inspiration and beautiful work!!
I really like your videos and the way you explain the theory and how to put it into practice. The explanation of the concept of the anchor and its opposition to abstract elements, as well as Saul Leiter's use of negative spaces, has been very brilliant. Thank you very much for your work.👏👏👏👏
Glad I could help!
Well said.
Again a fantastic video!!!!saul leiter was my favourite photographer. I’d love to see you cover nick Brandt, kodelka and lee Jeffries
I really enjoyed watching this. You have done a great job of analysing Leiter's images and showing how similar effects can be achieved. Thanks very much.
Great video. Toronto looks lovely. The story quality of your presentation had me hooked from the star.
You have a great knack for telling a story, this half an hour has been very much appreciated, please keep on doing these for my selfish needs!
Thank you so much for putting the time and effort into this video , most enjoyable and also a rare video on here that is not selling gear . So refreshing, please keep this style 🙏🙏🙏👍👍
Its beautiful the way you decoded a style and then showed us how to execute it.. Keep up the good work..
I think you video is very inspirational to other photographers like myself. I do a lot of street shooting, now I am going to look at other obscure compositions rather than the normal, CHEERS!
I love this so much. Especially the field recordings instead of stock music or so. Makes me want to get out and about.
I recently discovered your channel and I am shocked by the quality of your content. Your what-why-how approach in photography and the photographers behind is magnificent!
Thank you for introducing me to this inspirational artist. Great little project!
Thanks!
Really enjoyed your into to this artist and then your homage to him in different settings. The snow scenes were my favorites.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video, brilliant exercise great photos. Pacing of this video is just right! From Michigan, would be great to visit Toronto for a photo walk! Learned about a new street photography legend today! Thank you!
Great job on these! I really enjoy your deconstruction of photographic approaches. Thanks for all the work you put in.
You did a fine job on the video production and the photographs. Thank you very much for your time you've sacrificed to inspire and entertain.
Great video. This gave me a whole new perspective, not only on photography but on images I've already taken. Thank you 👍
This is what we/(I) have been waiting for. A genuinely beautiful, considered video about a really interesting photography subject.
Totally enjoyable and really useful. Thankyou.
Men, this is so inspiring. I can not thank you enough.
