There are no “wrong” choices in this game. You have to kind of just let go and shift your mindset for this game. Accept failed dice rolls or failed perceptions and let the story and consequences unfold.

yea this is really true. larian likes to keep people from feeling the fomo so they make the outcomes interesting either way. i know if you are trying to take all the fun out of the game and go for very specific things, you sometimes are hoping for a failed roll on certain important dialogue checks, no spoilers

@@RetroRaconteurit’s actually insane how many things you can do in this game. You know in some games where you can’t use some items because they simply aren’t coded to be useable? You can pick up every single cup or plate sitting on a table, light every candle, speak to every npc and generally, if you come up with a creative idea but are worried it won’t work because the game won’t let you do it, this game will. It will not railroad you. Kill anyone you like, it will let you. Make any choice it offers you and you will be allowed to follow through on that path. It will also let you get yourself killed if you do something really stupid, so protect yourself. But generally thinking outside the box isn’t just allowed, but sometimes needed.

A tip, and maybe you'll figure this out but.. You are a wizard, you will be squishy. You need friends. But in general D&D is a team sport.. so you'll want every companion you can get to make your team stronger.

I can feel your frustration. You're learning the controls, just be patient. Wizards start weak but once you hit level 5 you'll begin to feel godly. Some advice: Make sure you have 4 people in your party (add pets to if you have any)! Don't hesitate to camp so you can get your spells back. And, finally ranged spells have a penalty 'to hit' if the target it too close. Use that 'Shocking Grasp' or your 'Trip Attack' with a staff if they're on you.

This is why I often take thunderwave when I can... Sometimes I accidentally kill my teammates, but if I can make the enemy fly away and closer to the other allies it's more than fine. Sometimes I ONLY need it because the enemies and allies are glued to my personal space! U_U In those situations, my characters go crazy... they need room to "breathe"! 😂

      @RetroRaconteur
I attest that to the fact that no playthrough will be the same, there will always be things missed, and always be things found, and that combination makes for a limitless amount of content to be had and enjoyed.
I assume you already got a grasp of how the resources work, since I believe you mentioned you already had more episodes recorded, but I'll leave the bare bones basics here just in case you need a tip without spoiling:
Action: What you use to act, such as do a spell.
Bonus Action: Basically Action B to your Action A. They aren't the same resource as Bonus Action is used for lesser things.
Spell Slot: You have limited spell slots. You regenerate your Spell Slots by long resting, unless you're a Warlock.
Short Rest. Regained upon long rest. You regain 50% of your total HP and get some resources back if applicable.
Long Rest: Used to progress some Companion storylines. Regain Spell Slots and all HP. Requires Camp Supplies (40 in Balanced).
Partial Rest: Long Resting but with not supplies. You recover to 50% of your total HP and get half your resources back.
Advantage/Disadvantage: Roll two dice for whatever action your dice uses and take the higher or lower result (Firebolt uses a 10 sided dice for 1 to 10 damage). Almost everything in the game uses a dice so getting Advantage is good.
Threatened: When in melee range, ranged attacks that use a projectile have disadvantage.
      Types of dice used:
      d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 d20
The numbers are the sides. d20 for most things, but d4 to determine when you move in the turn order on top.
Sorry if you didn't want any of this, just thought it might be smoother if you hadn't learned within the two other episodes >.

  • @CandleLight129
    @CandleLight129 Місяць тому +2

    Ok, some light tips:
-1000% go back and touch the malfunctioning portal
-D&D spells work off of a slot system instead of mana or fp. You only have so many spell slots for each level of spell per day and then you have to go rest to get them back. You can see how many slots you have at the bottom of the screen when you have the action wheels up. You have unlimited cantrips though.
-Trying to use ranged spells and attacks in melee is very difficult and that's why you get disadvantage on those attacks. Touch spells (like shocking grasp or inflict wounds) and melee weapons are the way to go up close. Also, shocking grasp prevents the target from taking reactions like opportunity attacks.
-Characters can easily climb up small ledges, boxes, ect to get a height advantage. Look around your environment to figure out ways to use it strategically.
    -Save often

  • @piperbird7193
    @piperbird7193 Місяць тому +23

The fight in the courtyard is one of the first places the game tries to teach you about environment. The last bunch of people I've watched play have missed this, but above that circle on the ground is a big heavy stone, suspended in the air. If you hit that while the two dudes are standing under it, it will immediately take them out of the fight, leaving you just two to deal with. There will be things like this throughout the entire game. You can spread grease or wine or firepoweder on the floor, and then knock down a lit chandelier to ignite the whole area. You can hit an explosive barrel with fire to take out people standing near them. You can send rocks down hills to squash your enemies. Just remember - they can also do it to you. Always keep an eye on your surroundings for stuff you can use, or can be used against you.
This game doesn't hold your hand. Save OFTEN!

@@michaelmartin5623 Which is always fun! At this point, I do this fight by using Asty to sneak up and knock the one guy off the crate on the side, and once combat starts I use someone to shoot down that stone to take out those two dudes, range for the caster across the way, and advantage range for the dude now on the ground. Quick and easy!

  • @andyt1313

You’re not alone. Everyone is overwhelmed in the beginning. Battles can be challenging until you’ve learned all the mechanics. Keep the party full (4) so battles are easier. Use both the action and bonus action per turn if at all possible and useful. If you like story and lore I recommend talking to companions frequently in and out of camp. And, if you keep gathering enough camp supplies to do so, long rest occasionally to advance story and companion relationships.
I always touch the Sigil, but, hmm, now I’m curious what different path not touching it sends the story down.

  • @OhThatRobin
    @OhThatRobin Місяць тому +18

25:41 Okay yeah this is a common bug but you encountered it uncommonly early xD sometimes the cutscene glitches and only puts "continue" on the screen but it makes you choose the top option (in this case, the top option being to touch the thing). The easiest fix for this is to save and reload when it says "continue" and the real options will show up.

    • @Macabrellian
      @Macabrellian Місяць тому

Also, a weirder fix is to have a companion shove you mid-dialogue. Doesn't always work, but it's certainly faster than reloading in most cases.

Just wanted to say good job for not knowing D&D rules! I played this game with a lot of familiarity with the tabletop game, so there was a lot that I took for granted (for example, ranged attacks have disadvantage on nearby enemies, and running from a nearby enemy provokes attacks of opportunity). It was really interesting watching someone unfamiliar with all these rules try to sort them out on the fly.

the best advice i can give you for when you're selecting weapons and spells is try not to think too much about the damage output they claim to have.
for example, my favorite sorcerer build exclusively uses the ray of frost cantrip by taking advantage of status effects that give enemies cold vulnerability, twinned spell metamagic, and various items that boost the damage of elemental cantrips or cold damage spells.
not to mention these spells and items can have special effects, like RoF making water underneath enemies turn to ice and possibly knocking them prone on their turn if they fail a DEX save when they try to move.

  • @amac5875
    @amac5875 Місяць тому +11

This game involves strategy. Youll want to approach every combat with a mindset of how best to position. This includes elevation, line of sight, and your environment. As you already found, combat is unforgiving. Read your spells and be sure your prepared spells offer you flexibility to dealwith many types of enounters. Read tool tips. Get familiar with the UI. There are a lot of context clues eager to be discovered.

My advice to you, pay more attention to the cost of each of your combat options, e.g. you could have used Healing Word and Inflict Wounds with Shadowheart. This is because on every turn you have one action (like Inflict Wounds), one bonus action (like Healing Word) and movement. You should also note that you can use cantrips all the time, while higher level spells (1 and above) require spell slots to be cast. If you cant reach a target right away try to jump and move afterwards, than you might reach it. Try to avoid enemies opportunity attacks and place your characters in a way that you get advantage (flanking, enemies provoking your opportunity attacks). And explore each area thoroughly, you don’t wanna miss helpful items.

You’ve gotta explore and look around more. You missed a bunch on the Nautiloid.
PS. If you had spoken to Astarion instead of head butting him you’d have learned he saw you walking free on the ship while he was locked in a pod so he thought you were with the mindflayers. When he learns you are a victim too, he apologizes.
I think it’s a bad idea to turn down companions. Too many people do this, specifically with Astarion and Lae’zel because they aren’t rays of sunshine immediately and I’d say they have the two best/most interesting companion stories/character arcs in the game so you’re really just missing out on the best content for no reason.

1.Pretty much every action, spell, and ability can be used in and out of combat.(Review your menus as you would explore a dungeon) Your ranged attacks have disadvantage if the character is threatened in melee(enemy right next to character) You picked the most squishy class(laughed out loud when you said you didn't want to be a glass cannon. Oh the irony) keep lots of meat between your wizard and anything greater than a strong breeze. Magic scrolls are one use consumable spells but copying it into your spellbook makes it permanently available to you. Find and utilize turn base mode. There is so much more but most importantly don't get discouraged by failure(if you feel like the designers are teaching swimming by throwing you into the pool. They are. It won't take long for you to see why) especially when it comes to skill checks. Many of my most satisfying results came from failed checks. And start jumping, dashing ,and disengaging. Good luck.

But because we do want to to experience it raw and new, as we don't want to spoil anything.
Make sure you READ, DISCOVER and COMBINE options.
You can use stuff you find, just as you can create potions.
From manipulating the situation physically, by using the terrain, objects or enemies to verbally convincing, deceiving or bluffing your way through.
There are many ways to play. But you do you.
Its your experience and your character after all...
Also listen to its soundtrack, it is glorious.
Also you can adds mods if you wish for your beard....and soon in the new year they'll release a new patch with 12 new subclasses and crossplay amongst other stuff.

Using vs Learning scrolls - anyone can use a scroll at any time, which is really nice. But it consumes that scroll, it's a one time use. If a wizard learns the scroll, they can add the spell to their list to be used forever. You'll get TONS of scrolls throughout the game. Don't be afraid to use them!

The timed tutorial tips are so aggravating! Especially as a new player where you are overwhelmed without knowing what to look at. But, you can review all tutorials shown so far. Goto the journal, and in that section, you can select the tutorials tab. There you go! Review and read at your leisure. 😊 Love the playthrough! There are at least 3 very different replays waiting for you if you find the game to your liking. *edit* Also, review the combat log. That unveils some of the mystique of how to game does what it does. It provides context to how everything is done. Rather than trying to pick up that knowledge through repetition and osmosis. 😂

One more set of q.o.l. tips. These only focus on game mechanics that make life easier and help with the massive learning curve. I would never give ANY game/story spoilers. That being said, if you’d rather not hear these let me know.
    1) Party make-up for new players is pretty important - Of course, it’s always personal preference & I certainly have my favs but a balance of skills between talkers (high Charisma), spellcasters, weapon-fighters, & slight of hand/stealth characters will generally make life easier.
    2) You are a wizard (intelligence is most important) & can learn new spells from scrolls (unique class ability), as a new player, choosing the evocation route is probably easiest and focuses on dealing damage. You also REALLY want to stay out of melee range because the AI will recognize you as an easy squishy target and go after you first.
    3) Shadowheart is a cleric = spell caster with decent armor proficiencies and some melee abilities, often used as healers/party buffs (her Guidance spell is easily a top 3 cantrip in the WHOLE game), clerics have high Wisdom = high perception (an S-tier Skill) - I have strong respec opinions but will keep to myself unless you are interested. *Also, unlike Guidance, her Firebolt cantrip is HOT garbage because it is Intelligence, not wisdom-based (she only has it because of her elf ancestry) - The running joke is she should say “IG-MISS!” when she casts it instead of “Ignis!” - Produce and then Throw Flame is a MUCH better fire cantrip option
    4) Lae’zel is a fighter = a tank (high hp) with the best weapon and armor proficiencies (high ac), also Githyanki have some GREAT racial abilities
    5) Astarion is a rogue = slight-of-hand (Dexterity based) class, you can choose to go a few different ways as he levels up but this is a good class for ranged attacks, lock-picking, disarming traps, sneak attacks, and picking pockets
    6) Having a full party (i.e. 3 companions) at all times makes life easier although temporarily separating them can be a good strategy at times as well (ex: stealth situations)
    7) Talk to ALL of them. They ALL have AMAZING stories and can be romanced as well(or not).
    8) EXAMINE ALL OF YOUR ENEMIES - this can reveal resistances, vulnerabilities, and any special conditions that can dramatically help your combat strategy
Hope this helps but again, if it’s more you want or need, just let me know.

@@RetroRaconteur Okay, so I finally almost finished watching the episode and here are my tips. Advantage is when you roll 2 dice and you get the highest, disadvantage means you have to pick the lower roll. When you stand to close with a ranged attack or you're threatened, ranged attacks are at an disadvantage. If you leave an enemies side, you can see the circle around the enemy change into a little sword, that means they'll attack you when you run away from them. That's gonna help you a lot in combat!
For the rest, just keep looking around! Save the game often if you don't trust anything, people are used to loading screens in this game.🤣 Like the second portal has another potential ally who I'll think you'l like. And last but not least, try allies in your party and see what they do. For example, Astarion is a roque who can help you lockpick chests and doors, so you don't have to look for keys or attack doors 5 times to break them and when an ally stands next to an enemy, he gets sneak attack that can deal a lot of damage. (He is hard to have in the party when you try to be good, but he's an interesting person and maybe he'll like some of the choices you'll make!)
My prediction for your preferred team is, you gonna stay with the ladies, or you'll swap one (except for Shadowheart) for the guy with his rapier.

    @nickrubin7312 Місяць тому +5

Regarding combat. Any advice for a new player approach it as chess or, even more so, as problem-solving with spells/skills/weapons at your disposal (forget it is simply turn-based):
    - use environment and verticality, don't be stale
    - be creative if you want to, but reasonable, with a mindset "if in theory it should work, it probably would work"
    - reading the thing explains the thing, and wording of the thing is very important (if the spell says "affect all enemies in the area", it answers the question "will it hit my allies?", same with examining enemies), there are keywords in the descriptions like "disadvantage" and "attack roll" that are explained just by reading them (idk how to show text pop-up on console that shows explanation, but you'll figure it out)
    - there is no such thing as exploit, if it works it is all "fair" (it is systemic and if it is "allowed", then it is "all good")
    - action economy and managing resources are key (the more actions you have, like fighter can use Action Surge and get additional action, the more advantage in fight you'll get)
Wizard is a difficult class to play for a new player due to the sheer volume of spells at your disposal. You are a swiss army knife caster, the only class that can learn spells from scrolls.
Quite squishy at the start, absolutely OP broken late-mid/late game. Not as much raw power as Sorcerer, but absolutely 100% proper broken magic user xD
As a souls-like gamer you may appreciate it actually, funnily enough, at its core, regardless of how different it is, it is the same in principle.
Also, you probably will enjoy exploration overall, if you look at it like Elden Ring exploration, not quite dissimilar, actually, again, in principle lol. Going different paths wherever you like, and you will find content, but also probably die a lot to unexpected circumstances. While exploring, when you have the question "Should I be here, is this the right way?" the answer is "Does it matter, do you want to be here?".
Longrest, longrest, longrest. Don't be scared to longrest, and as a wizard you need it anyway, since you're short on spell slots.
    GLHF ;)

Since I know you have already played a few more sessions, these q.o.l. tips may already be obsolete but here goes:
    1) wizards are very squishy (low hp) and generally can’t wear armor (low ac) = NOT good for melee (Mage Armor helps a lot and lasts until your next long rest)
    2) cantrips are spells that can be cast an UNLIMITED number of times
    3) non-cantrip spells take up spell slots which can only be replenished with a long rest
    4) READ ALL spell, weapon, and item descriptions very carefully - (ex: Thunderwave and burning hands are great aoe spells but are SHORT RANGE)

    A few things:
Use your actions and bonus actions. Chugging a potion is a bonus action, you can also use your regular action to attack the same turn.
On that topic, shadowheart has two healing spells, one uses a regular action but is stronger, the other uses a bonus action but is weaker.
Distinguish between ranged and melee. Fire Bolt is a ranged spell, shocking grasp a melee spell.
There are continuous spells you want always on, like mage armor.
You walked into that fight in the end with two people and lost. While one companion idled the time away in your camp and you just passed by a chance to pick up a forth.
That's the most obvious right now.

As far as the ray of frost you were looking at, as a specialist build, the frost build is one of the strongest in the game. But as a specialist build, you need specific gear and know what to do. In a first run, you're better off not trying a specialist build unless you are familiar with those types of builds from other games. Dont stress to much over your choices and how you play. The game changes to your choices, so no choice is wrong, just different.
Heres a few QOL tips for you:
    1) Loot everything, EVERYTHING.
    2) Add your junk items to wares, then when you're at a trader, you can sell all wares at once, and thats all wares your companions have as well.
    3) Have fun.
    4) Don't worry if you miss things, you wont see everything in this game in 1 play through, or 2, or 3 or 4, or or or or. Im playing co op with a mate whos finished the game 4 times and i showed him an area he hasnt seen before, i finished the game 3 times, and he showed me things i hadn't seen before. Dont stress.
    5) Explore, the game is so big, you can easily miss things ( and thats ok ) but exploring everywhere, even places you think could lead somewhere, probably does.
    6) Have fun.
    7) When you find Camp Supplies, right click ( not sure what that is on console ) and send to camp, will save you time and inventory space.
    8) You get a lot of inspiration points, dont be afraid to use them, they cap at 4, any more gained after 4 are lost.
    9) Have fun
    10) Loot Withers to get your gold back, he doesnt care, even if you fail.
    11) ( most ) Ritual spells only take an action, so spells like Longstrider can ba used over and over at the start of the day to buff everyone. Drinking a potion of Speak with animals will last until long rest, or until you die. Same with a lot of others, but some will over ride each other, so make sure you read the description.
    12) Have fun
    13) If you get the survival fail by all members, right click or the console equivalent on your shovel and manually dig around the area, you dont need to succeed the survival attempt, you just need to be in the right area, and you will dig up the chest.
    14) Use elixirs and potions, they are there to be used, dont think its a noob move. Its a must.
    15)_ Have fun.
    16) You can respec if you find you are struggling. Only costs 100 gold which you can steal back anyway.
    18) Every choice you make has consequences, but dont stress over them, the game changes based on your choices, no choice is wrong ( unless you're trying for a specific play through and out come ) otherwise, dont fret.
    19) Have fun.

AAAHH - you need to touch the weird sigil to release Gale, a companion - he's trapped within it.
Also, YOU choose when to end the day; I usually do after a couple good battles, since I use a short rest when I get damage from a battle, & only have the two short rests. So use them & end the day - character stories need the time resting at camp to advance all their stories.
You can throw healing potions at your companions - hit them & it gives healing points to them.
And we've all forgotten to do quick saves along the way - ahhhh!
I love watching folks start out GB3 - I know their confusion & the surprises: You labor over character creation finally get done & - "You need a Guardian." LOL (been there, done that with five characters I've created - I'm always surprised by the Guardian! LOL - right with you, Dad.
-- You were having trouble with the little monsters because you had not leveled up yet - You had an arrow pointing at your icon to show you could. (I missed that, too, on my first run (of which I haven't gotten out of Act I yet - lol).)
There's a lot to pick up on; thanks goodness the game lets us take our time. I'm still learning what spells are melee (touch target) & which are range - you get disadvantage if use the wrong kind. If a spell says you don't have enough movement, then it's probably a short-range or contact/melee spell. I still get them mixed up.
The most important thing is for you to have fun, though - so enjoy. We've all tripped up & died a lot learning - hee hee heee,

BG3 does a good job of simulating the table top experience; there's no one "right" way, and a failed check can lead to more interesting outcomes. So "play from where it lands" is good advice - the game has multiple paths that tend to converge although your choices do matter and change the world. However do save periodically, as poor combat choices can wipe your party.
The order characters and monsters take their turns is based on a dice roll, and is displayed in the initiative bar at the top. Where two (or more) party members have their portrait outlines intertwined you can choose who acts first. Both the attacks and damage are governed by dice rolls; much like the ability checks where the dice are shown. Sometimes you'll miss (and see the target dodging), and sometimes you'll do more or less damage.
As a wizard you've a limited number of spell slots for spells that aren't cantrips. They restore if you sleep overnight in camp. Do use the camp as it advances the story too.
Regarding the nautiloid ship: it can travel between planes - during the cut scene you went to a frozen lands (likely Icewind Dale - the setting in an earlier game), then to Avernus (the first circle of hell in D&D - hence the imps and cambions). You needed to get out of the hells to where you are now - you wouldn't have survived otherwise.
I'd wait until you've met a few more party members, but you can see the cast play the table-top game here: ua-cam.com/video/jeJKnofNBNs/v-deo.htmlsi=qJmzCQ7SjSKIOyM2

    1. You will meet all the characters you see in the Character Selection screen, besides Dark Urge, quite early into the game. As soon as you see them you can get them in your party. (One of them is in that sigil!)
    2. Look out for someone called Minthara. If you fight them, be sure to use non-lethal melee to knock them unconscious.

I guess I can still give out a tip like the rest of the comments. Your attributes are not easy to raise. You should focus on raising stats that your class depends on. Unlike games like Fallout 4, individual characters cannot become a master of all and jack of none. Example: your wood elf wizard should not be using melee weapons or bows; these weapons depend on Str and Dex which you do not excel at. But you *do* have have high Int which makes your spells have superior hit rates and a stronger spell save for enemies to roll against.

Magic scrolls are a one time use spell that anyone can use but Wizards can learn them permanently through this method.
Sorcerers on the other hand learn much fewer spells but they have access to a unique resource called Sorcery points which can be used empower their spells.

I can't tell if magic can also be used to destroy them because I've never tried it but maybe you could do that to a door? It's funny because I was so used to seeing locked doors in all games and it needing a rogue, a key, or a lockpick to make it accessible but then I saw a video of someone just barbarian smashing doors open lol. Because when you examine them, the doors have HP, even chests I think can be smashed open.

You said in episode2 you didn't like your hair choice, and I agree. There is a mirror in your camp that will let you get a hair cut:) And I am sorry to say but there is no way to rush this game. It seems a little that you didn't want to talk to half the people in the Druid's camp and make a B-line to the marker on the map. There is so much content in this game you will playing for the next six months easy lol. I'm enjoying the playthrough so far keep it going.

Also let me explain advantage and disadvantage:
Advantage - roll two dice, use the better result
Disadvantage - roll two dice, use the worse result
Charm + bless should have given you a high chance to get Lae'Zel out of the cage without bloodshed.

Also, astarion didn't pull a knife on you because you walked away from him, he asked you to kill something as a distraction so he could pull a knife on you either way...hes a rogue, so he did a diversion to get advantage on you, as is his nature

Don't be afraid to just try stuff. This game allows for a whole lot of silly strategies. Build a tower of stuff and drop it on your enemies? Throw a friend? Why not? I hope you'll experience how much fun this kind of turnbased combat can be, even if you don't generally love it. It is quite different from final fantasy because of the freedom you are allowed for weird strategies.

There is a way to make the Devil drop his sword by having Shadowheart cast Command. If you do it, its a solid weapon for Act 1 and most of Act 2.
