Learn how they fight, learn how they live, and learn what they believe in, then you can truly destroy someone from the inside and out. Basically every war in human history.
Yep, that’s the essence of it when one wishes to bring utter ruin upon their enemies. It’s quite apparent that Timothy Zahn, the creator of Thrawn, definitely drew some major inspirations from _The Art of War_ when writing the character as an exceptional military strategist/leader. *“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”* *-Sun Tzu*
I think it's a carefully calculated ploy. By being politically 'ignorant', he is able to direct most rivals' attacks to the political sphere. It also creates an aura of mystery that increases his prestige.
Agreed. You get the sense that his apparent political mis-steps in _Thrawn_ were more of a "just as planned" manipulation than anything else. He convinced Vader of his loyalty in the sequel, and left everyone pretty happy with him in the third novel - despite having to compete with two Imperial rivals and finesse the interference of a Chiss task force all the while. The only time when he was really blindsided was when Pryce decided a bit of mass murder would cover her tracks nicely, and vaporized several thousand civilians Thrawn was trying to not butcher. Everything else pretty much ended up working out in his favor.

Great analysis of the true nature of Thrawn's leadership. Too often people focus on his ability to think ahead and around people, over his ability to lead and inspire.

(Basically Palpatine cloned him from the hand with accelerated growth so he could a new apprentice but died before the process was complete. Insane Luke clone is left with an entire storehouse full of Dark Side relics to learn to use the Force.) The rest of the trilogy is basically unchanged.
Great video! You really hit the nail on the head. Thrawn has been my favorite character since I watched Rebels, and then went back to read the original trilogy and the current canon novels. This was excellent!
Many generals observe the enemy's battles and tactics and try to strategize around what they have seen in the past under the assumption they will do the same thing or something similar in the future. Thrawn sought to truly know and understand his opponents in order to understand how they think and react to things versus trying to plan around prior tactics being applied in the future. This why he was always a step ahead of everyone because he knew exactly how they would react to the given situation. Thrawn is definitely my favorite character in all of Star Wars and I am really hoping to see him in live-action at some point in the near future.
I see a lot of nuances and similarities between Thrawn and General George S. Patton. I don’t know if Timothy Zahn intended that when he created Thrawn, but they are there nevertheless. Patton was a student of history, geography, and military going all the way back to the conquests of the Roman Legions. His intimate knowledge of this, and having read written materials by Field Marshall Erwin Rommel that were published in the 1930’s contributed greatly to Payton’s military successes as he led his armored divisions in North Africa, Sicily, and Europe. Patton was very much a student of his opponent’s tactics.
Your (apt) description of Thrawn makes him sound like he would absolutely THRIVE as a member of Starfleet (in Star Trek). That's why I made a character based on him in Star Trek Online.
Thrawn's study of alien art culture is similar to one of Sun Tzu's teaching in the Art of War. _"If you know your enemy, and you know yourself, then you need not fear the results of a hundred battles."_
Or to quote an American General on the matter, "Rommel you magnificent bastard, I read your book!" Funny enough, Rommel's work is still studied and utilized by many modern armies.
i like how nice he is by introducing a sponsor he's polite about it. Were as other UA-camr's act like they really don't care, but he does so i like that.
Thrawn knows a number of time honored rules of tactics. For example: "Know your enemy and know yourself, in a hundred battles, you will never be defeated" --Sun Tzu. Also this one: "No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy." --Helmuth van Moltke. While it is true that those who "fail to plan, plan to fail" (Benjamin Franklin), a preplanned battle strategy should include contingency plans in case of unanticipated complications. If all else fails, a tactician must learn to 'roll with the punches' and use intuition as well as experience. Thrawn clearly understands these things which, along with his leadership skills, makes him an exceptional military commander.
It's really annoying that many fans criticize Thrawn, arguing that he is just a copy of Tarkin. Although both characters have some similarities, they are really different. Thrawn is analytical while Tarkin is obstinated. In fact, the destruction of Alderaan can serve as an example. While Tarkin didn't wink at the time of giving the order (causing a massive joinment to the Rebel Alliance), Thrawn would have never did that knowing the consecuences.
Would Thrawn have disobeyed Vader's orders? Or did Tarkin need Vader's permission to blow up Alderaan? It seems the Empire was fixing to use the Death Star anyways.
I never really understood Thrawn, his appeal, or his place in the Galaxy. He never really appeared in the movies, or games I played but he was always this supervillian lurking in the shadows. Granted I haven't read anything about his back story either, but I liked this video. It unravels some of the mystery for me.
I didn’t either until I started reading the Thrawn books, and oh my goodness he’s literally my most favorite character ever, even if he fights for the empire, he’s just so much more complex than just a villain
Not only must your subordinates become an extension of you, but like any athlete you must understand the way your own body works and figure out how best to work with it, strengthening weaknesses, learning strengths and understanding unique innate traits.
The only person who thinks like Thrawn is *Agent Tierny, the best and only competent member of the First Order.* She did actually something that Emo Ren fails to do, convincing good person like Tam to join the First Order/the Dark Side. Tierny, the villain shows better Leaderships than so call hero, Holdo. Tierny deserves much more.
I can not wait for Thrawn to appear in an episode of the Mandalorian. such awesome characters we got Ahsoka last week, done to perfection, wish Star Wars was our reality, in a small way it is.Thrawn looks very interesting let us live SWU.
He remarked to Captain Palleaon in 'Heir to the Empire' that he "served under Vader for too long," noting his hesitations about voicing opinions and suggestions.
I agree with your thoughts here . Thrawn is NOT an intrinsically Evil person . Quite the Contrary . He used rational thought to PICK A SIDE . Tat's all . I suppose the Excessive quantities of Colloidal Silver in his Diet , and Endless Bongs lend much to his personal aesthetic .🙃.
So basically have social skills, analytical mind, some psychology experience, and be capable of planning along with quick witted and adaptable... Sounds totally easy.
So you saw everything is a nail but you need the proper tools becaue one nail needs a hammer and another nail needs a screwdriver as it is really a screw. Which makes battlefield a meaningless term when you need different tools.
Ah, Thrawn. That's the leader I'd follow, the one for whom I would betray all my childhood indoctrination and sign up with the Empire for. He can best Inigo with steel, he can best Fezzik with strength, and he can outthink Vizzini. And a man who can do that can plan my castle onslaught any day.
Call Thrawn what you will. But there's one thing to be certain about is that he's a daddy. Also if he were human in warhammer 40k I think Thrawn would have been made Lord Commander or if we are talking about TTS40K he would be the Emperor's personal ship commander
Thrawn is commanders greens dad (A joke but for context: everyone knows that command green had a interest for alien culture similar too thrawns which I this is a big assumption but what if green met thrawn when he was younger and eventually a thrawn grew he remembered the clone and some how got his helmet far fetched I know but he does have greens helmet in one of the episodes in the background
If you want to beat Thrawn I guess you'll have to do as the Romans did with Hannibal: attack where he is absent. First of all: Thrawn does not know anything about Roman history so he can't anticipate that. Secondly: not all his subordinates are of his capacity so it's a safer bet. A good example might be the loss of the Peremptory during the seizing of the Katana fleet: because he wasn't there.

_"If you know your enemy, and you know yourself, then you need not fear the results of a hundred battles."_
i bet than Thrawn would put all volumes of the book "The Art Of War" in the most honourable place in his colection if he would visit earth
His name translates into: Raw Myth Of The Bright Odo.
Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Star Wars version of Sun Tzu.
To know your enemy, you must think like the enemy.
No need for it just read that you are determined as the script says so
@@TorianTammas
Rip
Or to quote an American General on the matter, "Rommel you magnificent bastard, I read your book!"
Funny enough, Rommel's work is still studied and utilized by many modern armies.
@@lordfrostwind3151 Was that Patton?
@@501ststormtrooper9 indeed it was
i like how nice he is by introducing a sponsor he's polite about it. Were as other UA-camr's act like they really don't care, but he does so i like that.
Every one else be playing UNO whilst Thrawn out here playing Death note
He is a great role model and example as a leader and tactician and stagiest etc. so much can be said but this man is defo a legend.
We all just a pawn of Thrawn
Thrawn is not only a great leader, and tactician, but also an understanding person.
Thrawn clearly understands these things which, along with his leadership skills, makes him an exceptional military commander.
honestly, I wish Sabine and Thrawn had more interactions in the show
Saw this just after getting started in EvE online. Beautiful
Thrawn would make one hell of a D&D GM
It's really annoying that many fans criticize Thrawn, arguing that he is just a copy of Tarkin. Although both characters have some similarities, they are really different. Thrawn is analytical while Tarkin is obstinated. In fact, the destruction of Alderaan can serve as an example. While Tarkin didn't wink at the time of giving the order (causing a massive joinment to the Rebel Alliance), Thrawn would have never did that knowing the consecuences.
They Really say that?!
@@nobleman9393 I have found some people in internet that say the same abot Thrawn
Yea the cartoon version of him doesn’t do justice
I didn’t either until I started reading the Thrawn books, and oh my goodness he’s literally my most favorite character ever, even if he fights for the empire, he’s just so much more complex than just a villain
I am someone who prefers rebels and will choose them every time. But if I got the chance to serve under Thrawn id become and imperial in a heartbeat
I feel the same way
After watching this, I’ve just thrown out my books about leadership
This was one of your best videos.
Love watching your videos, I feel smarter thanks
3:50 Samakro would be a great example for that. My advice to all: Read the Thrawn Ascendency trilogy. It‘s incredibly well written and exciting.
Allen! Thanks for extolling your sound value system through Star wars👌
Not only must your subordinates become an extension of you, but like any athlete you must understand the way your own body works and figure out how best to work with it, strengthening weaknesses, learning strengths and understanding unique innate traits.
Ascertain is pronounced Asser-tayn
He's basically one part Sun Tzu and one part Hannibal Lecter.
Appearance/demeanor-wise, I also get Dracula-like vibes from Thrawn's character.
you mean hannibal barca my dude
4:54 well said
The only person who thinks like Thrawn is *Agent Tierny, the best and only competent member of the First Order.* She did actually something that Emo Ren fails to do, convincing good person like Tam to join the First Order/the Dark Side. Tierny, the villain shows better Leaderships than so call hero, Holdo. Tierny deserves much more.
0:06 Your name is Schmallen? Since when?
Half Polish half Uzbek I would guess
Grand Admiral Thrawn is the best officer in the Empire!
Thrawn is the Sherlock Holmes of Star Wars -- he even resembles him.
Only 2 minutes in and I already LOVE this.
Thx for the video Shmallen!!
Thrawn is just a Pantoran with an eye condition
Thrawn would be a amazing investigator or an amazing teacher in today's world
His comic was awesome! Get to know where he came from, who is, and so on
I can not wait for Thrawn to appear in an episode of the Mandalorian. such awesome characters we got Ahsoka last week, done to perfection, wish Star Wars was our reality, in a small way it is.Thrawn looks very interesting let us live SWU.
this is informative comrade.
He remarked to Captain Palleaon in 'Heir to the Empire' that he "served under Vader for too long," noting his hesitations about voicing opinions and suggestions.
Most Star wars strategies are playing chess while Thrawn is going full Xcom
Every other commander playing checkers while Thrawn is playing 4D chess.
Hey Shmallen! It’s Shme, your biggest fan!
Love thrawn
I would love to listen to Thrawn and Revan talk about war tactics.
So basically have social skills, analytical mind, some psychology experience, and be capable of planning along with quick witted and adaptable...
Sounds totally easy.
Thrawn is Sun Tzu of Star Wars universe.
Thrawn recognized everything as a battlefield, you just need different tactics and tools for each encounter.
So you saw everything is a nail but you need the proper tools becaue one nail needs a hammer and another nail needs a screwdriver as it is really a screw. Which makes battlefield a meaningless term when you need different tools.
@@TorianTammas espionage is a different tool used in warfare....
Arguably the best character ever made
He easily beats both sides' commanders. Even though he's accepted as the villan, he has everybody's respect. Even... his opponents.
You should do a vid on who would be more likely to win thrawn or trench
So Jocko is the real life Thrawn
Who would win the Klingons from start trek or thrawn? Im saying thrawn but it is a fun concept to think about
Man I hope that mention he got in the Mandalorian isn't the last we'll here from him
Thrawn reminds me a lot of Ender Wiggin
Thank you for sharing such info. Now we can solve the only puzzle worth solving. The complete and utter destruction of the rebellion
Do you mean Gree or someone else?
If you want to beat Thrawn I guess you'll have to do as the Romans did with Hannibal: attack where he is absent.
First of all: Thrawn does not know anything about Roman history so he can't anticipate that.
Secondly: not all his subordinates are of his capacity so it's a safer bet. A good example might be the loss of the Peremptory during the seizing of the Katana fleet: because he wasn't there.
Thrawn is on the spectrum.
Step 1- Listen to the people that are actually fighting and do not make up your own opinions.
You don't have to like Grand Admiral Thrawn, but you have to respect him.
