An Exciting Change That Has Transformed My Garden!

- After being piled up in my garage for the last few months, my fruit cage that was kindly given to me by my dad's friend is finally up!
Vince and I spent a morning at the plot deciding on the best location and getting the frame put up. Then a few weeks later we spent another morning clearing the ground under the cage and putting the net on. The fruit cage looks fantastic and I can't wait to get lots of soft fruit planted up into it!

Wow! A fruit cage! The best thing I’ve ever been given and reused is an old metal boat that wasn’t water tight. A neighbor gave it to my Dad. We filled it with compost and horse manure and now it’s a funtastic raised bed! We plant tomatoes in it. Dad tells everyone he has a boat load of tomatoes. It’s super cute and fun.

Best thing I was given for the garden: toss-up between a 3 tier metal planter….it’s huge and stunning and a large wooden bench that I painted cobalt blue.

Great gift Gemma, fruit cage looks fabulous. Vince is a great DIY man, every plot needs one, mine is my husband Doug 😂 He doesn't mind being in the background of my videos but doesn't want to be too prominent or talk on them. Loved the planting of Danny the Grapevine in your previous video ❤

@@GemInTheGardenHi Gemma, we had a fab afternoon at the allotment today. Went earlier to get more work done but Danny popped over and Cheryl from the plot next door. The 4 of us enjoyed a cuppa and natter together, hence not much work happened today 😂 Lovely allotment party though 👍❤️

Best thing I was given for my garden was a Wheel barrow 30 years ago. Still going strong on the original tyre and has always been outside.

A decent size cage Gemma. I decided last autumn to build some sort of a cage over my raspberries and thorn less blackberries. It was a pain every couple of days pulling netting off the raised beds I have them in, to remove the fruit. it was worth it as some days I would get a pound of raspberries. But the birds decided they wanted their share, so I need to improve things for next year.
I think Vince deserves at least an Irish Coffee to warm his bones. 😃
Hi Loki, I'm super excited about the fruit cage I think they really help in increasing harvests and reducing workload like you say pulling off net can be a real chore! Yes Vince does deserve a nice hot drink ☕️ he was fantastic 👏

Hi Gemma, looking great & what a gift. When I got mine I was gifted all my fruit bushes (Raspberries/Blackberries/Red & Black Currants/Gooseberries), Jerusalem Artichokes & just recently 5 Asparagus Crowns 😮…. I have exciting news. That looks fab and so nice of your Dad's friend! Will you be putting your strawberries in there? You can make those strawberries towers out of the crates with holes in the sides.

Hi Gemma, a mini gas camping stove and kettle would help and 2 folding stools under the shelf/breakfast bar would give you a Cody place in the warm to get out of the rain, your plot is looking great! I also have a Vince well a Gareth! Have a lovely Christmas!

I want to make a brassica cage next year as great how I do it but a chore each year setting up the netting.. to be able to walk in will be so much easier

fruit cage is looking fab but every winter I take off the roof netting on mine just in case of any snow it can build up on the netting

Great job you two! .I have been tinkering in my garden off and on.Hopefully I'm getting a new roof on my house next year. So I don't want things stepped on . I'm on hold for certain things.I harvested some collards and cabbage and waiting on the khorobi to get a little larger. once you tidy up you will get inspiration. Lol ❤ Have a great day
