We’re experiencing an empathy shortage, but we can fix it together | Jamil Zaki | TEDxMarin

  • “Being a psychologist studying empathy today is a little bit like being a climatologist studying the polar ice caps,” says psychology professor Jamil Zaki. That’s because according to research, our collective empathy is eroding. But there is good news: Empathy is a skill, it can be built, and he explains how he - and others - are doing just that.
    Jamil Zaki is an assistant professor of psychology at Stanford University. His research examines social cognition and behavior, especially how people understand and respond to each other’s emotions. This work spans a number of domains, social influence, prosocial behavior, and especially empathy (see ssnl.stanford.edu for details). In addition to studying the mechanics of empathy, Dr. Zaki’s work focuses on helping people empathize better. For instance, new research from his lab examines how to encourage empathy for people from distant political and ethnic groups, and also how caregivers and healthcare professionals can effectively empathize with their patients while maintaining their own well being.

    TBH I almost cried when he said I couldn't get more empathetic. I've been working on my empathy lately because I feel like I'm missing out on life by not trying to connect with other people any deeper than on a surface level. It's rare I ever find people who I connect with, and I think I'm the reason.

    Empathy is humanity, lately due to extreme stress and anxiety I had changed from being very empathetic and compassionate to an emotionally numb person and I started fearing that I was someone who has ASPD because of my lack of empathy. Once I took the time to learn that empathy can take the backseat because of mental disorders such as anxiety and OCD I knew I had to get rid of my stressors and exercise and eat healthy and stuff but my empathy was not yet to come back though my anxiety and ocd had reduced greatly making my fear of having ASPD more concrete. This video gives me hope and determination.

    We can’t fix it, there just isn’t a high enough ratio of humans who have the capability. Most really do only care about themselves, they only give real support to another person when they think they’ll receive a large enough reward or benefit . That’s why so few are supportive of their own family members, partners, friends, neighbors, etc (people in their own circles who they don’t favor)
    It’s rare got a human to have genuine empathy.

    What is the biological basis for empathy?

    • @getfugu5855
      @getfugu5855 5 років тому +6

      I'm not the expert Dr. Zaki is on this, but here's an intuition/guess to try to answer that:
      We're a social species. We've always lived in groups, it makes sense that those who got along with others would be more likely to succeed. If you don't get along with others, you'd probably get kicked out of the group or at least somewhat ostracized, which from a very objective standpoint probably limits your likelihood of reproducing. Empathy helps you get along with other people, so that makes it an advantageous evolutionary skill to develop.
      As humans have advanced, those groups have gotten larger, and therefore include more people who are different from us. There's more people to get along with, but the more people you can get along with, the better off you are. While you don't have to get along with everyone (society certainly illuminates that fact today), understanding others can still help you in everyday interactions with the people you spend the most time with.
      Understanding and getting along with others therefore seem to be an advantage from an evolutionary standpoint, so it's good to be empathetic. (We also get a dopamine rush when we help people or make others happy, which does indicate an underlying evolutionary reward aswell)

      Does the answer to this question depend on the way one defines empathy?
      I'm going to make the claim that empathy, as it is commonly understood, is a human invention that we place a belief in, much like free will.
      There are perhaps some psychological and biological components that contribute to the effect that we may understand empathy to be but what are those components?
