Honestly Lobotomites are the scariest part of OWB for me. I've always thought Christine's cognitive decline was really tragic, and the fact there's just a machine out there pumping out Christines is kinda horrifying.

It was that being trapped in that automatic surgeon machine cutting her apart and putting her back together for a week was traumatizing as all fuck and she was rendered mute since it damaged her throat. No If you go through all the dialog it’s been broken potentially since Elija escaped or maybe just at some point in the centuries since the war but the reason it didn’t work on you is because you had been shot in the head and also courier 6 is probably a synth
I wonder if the toaster is inspired from "Talkie Toaster" in Red Dwarf, although in his case, he is absolutely obsessed with insisting everyone eats 400 rounds of toast, every hour, or he throws a major wobbler. This is my favorite DLC ever for fallout. I got teleported here at level 5 I don't remember how I just loaded my game and I was in old world blues. I found the proton inversal axe first and man hacking my fellow lobotomites down was so fun. This was a nice trip down nostalgia lane

Which, especially if they have cognizance of what they USED to be, may be all the more horrifying and tragic. It really fucking pisses me off that somehow, every single one of those fuckers have brush guns and hunting revolvers and an ass ton of 45-70 ammo if you’re above a certain level.
Lobotomites are NOT mindless.
They are very simple, though.
They can't make guns, but they can work out how to use and load them. Some of which may be muscle memory.
And they have organized into a very basic tribal social structure... complete with a simple religion (zoro-toasterianism?)
Essentially, they have been regressed mentallu by the failed surgery into simplistic hunter-gatherer cavemen, not totally blanked into mindless beasts.
Which, especially if they have cognizance of what they USED to be, may be all the more horrifying and tragic.
Imagine being a lobotomite, who has dim memories of being a much smarter being that could make use and sense of the strange things you were surrounded by, but can no longer remember what they are and how you used them no matter how hard you try.
Imagine spending your nights curled up sobbing because you have memories of being a completely different person doing all these wonderful things but can never do them ever again.
Imagine having endless nightmares of surgery and pain, every time you sleep, because your last and strongest memory of having your intelligence was of it being torturously stripped away by a cold, cruel, heartless machine, and that memory was so traumatic it is forever branded on the forefront of your thoughts.
Imagine looking at your reflection, and seeing your face, and knowing it's the face you have in your dreams and breaking down because some part of you knows you're ruined. So you cover your face, with anything you can find, so you can glean what cold comfort you can get from the lie you tell yourself: That the person in the dreams is someone else, not you, and you aren't broken. You're not.
Even though you know it's a lie.
