Why iPhones Don't Have Custom Ringtones

  • If you’ve switched from Android to iPhone, you may’ve tried setting a custom ringtone. Only to find out that it’s not possible, unless you’re prepared to follow a convoluted workaround that often requires a computer, iTunes, and an audio editing app. For comparison, setting a custom ringtone on Android is as simple as navigating to settings and selecting an MP3 file. So why doesn’t Apple simplify the process on iPhone? Well, the short answer is greed.

I made my own personal ringtones using GarageBand. I didn’t just use the voice recorder and clip a song. I made my own. I’ve done it for heaps of people free of charge. The only thing is. I use their phone to do it. It gives it a unique feel as it is theirs and I can’t access it after. Makes me feel good.

The process of getting a custom ringtone on an iPhone is basically getting a sound you want, converting it to MP3, saving it to files, opening it in garageband, and then adding it as a ringtone. It takes some work but Android doing this natively is better.

as someone from the industry, I am pretty sure that profits off ringtones are negligible. Not allowing or making it as hard as it is to set other than the few standard ringtones is just about brand recognition. Apple has always been very proud of its sound branding and sounds like the mac startup chime, the locking sound of an iPhone, MagSafe and obviously, the ringtones are so important for brand awareness that it would hurt a lot if you wouldn't hear them everywhere ;)

I found there's no setting even for gradual volume increase. So I went to my FL Studio, adjusted the volume myself for a gradual increase, then the whole process again, garageband, set it as an alarm sound... IT NORMALIZES THE SOUND AGAIN, it's as if I did not play with the volume at all and just blasts birds full volume right from the get go.

You can add your own ringtone. With iTunes you can select any of your mp3.
I think the other reason is the copyright. Apple can sell the song to you. The T&C states that the purchased song are only for private usage. So if you play the music on a house party then technically you break Apple's T&C.

Camera was the selling point of it but honestly I wouldn't notice a difference unless there's like a 4 year gap between the phones. All of the phones these days have good cameras. My issue was the depreciation. After 2 years I bought Pixel 2 for 1000 and sold it for 200 while the same priced iPhone would go down max to 800 in 2 years. I never had a custom or default ringtone on my Galaxy S3 when I first had one back in the spring of 2015. It gave up on me back in spring of the following year by the screen turning off and on. Along with the power button not working and the battery not holding much charge. My Galaxy S3 never had cellular service and I would always keep it at silence.
After it gave up on me, I would use the Galaxy Tab 4 (7 in. screen, white color). It was an upgrade and downgrade at the same time. Then in early October of 2017, I brought a Galaxy Express 3 which I still agree with my above statement of upgrading.
I would then upgrade to an iPhone 6s in mid May of 2018 which made a big difference. I remember that it took a me a bit to get used to the Apple Ecosystem. By mid May of 2020, I have upgraded to the iPhone 8 Plus which doesn't feel its age too much but I notice it that more storage wise just like I did with the 6s.
In early January of this year, I upgraded to the Galaxy S10 which still performs great! It honestly took me back when I would still use my S3.
Going back to the main topic, I have never had these phones with a ringtone. I find it unnecessary unless it is absolutely needed. I would use the flash notifications on both the iPhone 6s and 8 Plus. I do miss the notification LED light on the Galaxy S3 and HTC Rezound had. ( I used that phone previously before the S3 until it wouldn't charge no more.) ( My first ever smartphone was the Samsung Vitality or Admire in the red color back in mid January of 2013. Then I had the HTC Rezound in November of 2013.)
My Galaxy S10 is the phone that has cellular service and I am happy with it.

As an Android user, I've been considering a switch to Apple because they're not using your data for advertising, and have an overall better app library and experience.
But then I repeatedly get floored when I find out they lack basic things like TOTP or Hardware Security Key account authentication. And now, in 2022, Apple actually tries to make you pay money for ringtones?! What is this, 2003? Unbelievable!

I just simply drag the audio file to garageband and export it as ringtone. I will make a video about that soon! I did it within 1 minute!

    I haven’t used a ringtone since 2016
My phone has permanently been on silence since then

The best native Ringtone System, from my POV, comes from LG, it vibrates at the same time and intensity of music which it’s in configurations

I think the reason the majority of people don’t care about having a ringtone anymore is because most of us have it on silent. I don’t even think I know what my default ringtone is.
