    I'm actually left-handed also, and while your right hand does have to do most of the work, your "finger memory" will kick in if you just keep spending some time on it, so don't give up. :-)

    I am awed by this. This is a God sent for people who are fast on the uptake and want to get playing instead of just learning like in other methods. I have acquired more skills in two days than two years of lessons with books and ten years of watching someone play the piano, without knowing how the fingers do all the walking. Thanks a lot.

    I'm really glad to hear that... And when musicians I'm performing with tell each other what chords to play, they use numbers to describe it, not notes, so it makes sense to understand the numbers from the get-go because it's more logical and (in my opinion) less confusing because you can apply the same rules to any key.
    (Also, when it's loud on stage, yelling "E !", D !", "B !" C !" "G!" all pretty much sounds like "E !", so in that way too, numbers are better. :-)

      At the bottom of one of the video's thumbnails, it says that you can easily build chords by simply using the 5, 2 and 1 fingers on the left hand. That's an excellent tip that I don't think was mentioned within the video.
      You can further simplify by forming and rolling your chords off the bass note (at interval 1) by playing 1-5-8-10 interval above the bass note (using only my 5, 2 and 1 fingers on the left hand) when improvising a song on piano.

    used these techniques and within 3 hours of playing i wrote a nice little song (with bass and everything), your hands correspond with your thoughts much easier when it makes sense in your head, instead of trying to remember what sounds like what..

    Self-learning here and I picked up on chord of every other white key (1,3,5)....when changing chords if middle finger goes to left for black key, then all white was major chord and you are switching to a minor chord. If middle finger goes to right for black key then all white chord was minor chord and you're switching to a major chord. Makes sense now because the higher note is the major, so going up a note is major and going down is minor. B was the only exception with my theory, and the number method with the 3,2 or 2,3 notes in between solves that and opens up alot of understanding now. THANKS!

    Woah! This was a rabbit hole with results! I have always messed around with piano but never learned anything or had any idea of what I was doing but after watching the first 2 vids and the other 8 I'm pretty impressed with my level of understanding I now have when it comes to the piano, chords, and adding a little spice to it. NOW! I haven't paid any money yet, just because I figure I need to go over the free videos provided more BUT! I can say once I feel comfortable with what is being taught in the other 8 lessons I plan on atleast going up to the next couple of lessons which I'll have to pay for but honestly it's worth it.
    BACKSTORY: I just bought at MPK mini2 which has about 16 keys which aren't that much. I have no piano experience except what I said above. After doing this tutorial as well as doing the MPK tutorials I've pretty much been making my own beats with melodies in about 48 hours of getting the equipment thanks to these quick tips and other tutorials on youtube. I now want to get a full sized keyboard just to see how far I can take this thing because of this tutorial series alone. Their are of course limitations with the 16 keys but I have also figured out how to layer the music in the provided software. It's quick interesting what technology can do especially with a mixture of great tutorials like this one. Well done. If I can practice for an hour a day I can only imagine what I can start producing in a month. With no school training/or experience. This video is from 2010 and it's legit af.

    I've been learning piano for two days (this is day two) and with this guy's help from the last video, I can play my entire 61 key keyboard forwards and backwards with both hands (one hand at a time, messing up a bit of course.. but only for now), and can almost do it without ever looking. I say everything out loud when I touch a key for extra help but this guy REALLY helps. I'm looking forward to this next video.
    Pretty much writing this b/c damn.. what a helpful video ya know?
    Also, @XxRGFxX, if someone says play this chord, you just count your fingers (unless you've done it enough to memorize where the hand is supposed to be) and bang. you just played the chord.
    *Edit* I also placed tape on my keys to help memorize which ones are which

    I don't know if its just because I'm good with numbers or if I have good ear or a combination of both, but I could never really understand all these chords that traditional piano lessons give you until I watched this video along with the first part, then everything just clicked. Pretty much everything that is said are thoughts that have come through my head in the many years I would sit in front of my father's piano trying to learn off of beginner's books and getting frustrated with all these specific chords but they never seemed to get to the point - playing piano.
    I will need to re-watch this over and over just to make it part of my nature and will formulate a way to have the number system accompany my lessons and practice.

    Great to see an online lesson like this. I've seen many that never bother to teach things the musicians think about them. The great thing about the number system also is that you learn about how chords function within the music (i.e. how they relate to each other). You just can't do that learning chord by their letter names.

    I am having a lot of trouble with playing something with my left hand while I play something else with my right hand. How do I practice each of my hands independency? :S

    I really do believe I got it! Dont have a piano at home but I will try this out when I have one in front of me. So to be able to do this you need to know what major chords are, right? And lets say you are starting at A major, then you have your right hand placed on A, C# and E right? A is number 1, C# is number 3 and E is number five right? And to play that song you are playing in the video you are also playing on the 4th key which is a D. And when you have played that one you place number 1 finger on the 4th and all the other fingers follows but the only difference is that there are other keys? Please tell me I got it right lol

    it's funny; i understood the first video fine but something about this one keeps throwing me off and i'm not sure what it is. probably the fact that i have to remember the whole 2 - 3 and 5 - 6 rule for minor keys

    • @deepathomas6818
      @deepathomas6818 5 років тому +2

      Yeah. In Twist and shout, that Major scale rule of half step from 3-4 and 7-8 has to be kept in mind to understand how he found the 3 chords in A scale when he changed from it from C scale. He changed the song chords from C, F and G (1,4 and 5 using numbering system) in the C scale to chords A, D and E (which is the 1, 4 and 5 keys in A major scale) to play that song in A scale. But as the video progressed towards the end and he started playing the keys as a master, I couldn't keep up and make any sense as it was too fast and way advanced for me who knows nothing beyond names of Keys 😅.
      But what I do not understand is this,
      If a song uses both major and minor chords how will you number the chords and in which scale will the numbering be done (because numbering is done on either the major or minor scale, can't mix both right?) some knowledgeable person, please enlighten. 🙏

    I'm already very familiar with where the keys are on the piano, so using the numbering system has made scales so much easier. I've always wanted to play without reading sheet music treble and bass clef lines, and knew that playing chords would be the key to making this possible. I fully understand this method of quickly and accurately playing the major and minor chords, as well as the 1-4-5 primary chords that are in just about every song ever written. My next step is to work on timing, as well as inversions and nice sounding arpeggios.

      The "number" relationship between different related notes and chords exists whether you take the time to observe them or not, they're the "skeleton" that holds everything together. After you get more familiar with chord progressions, try watching this video again and it may "click" for you better. :-)

      yea, "numbers" or "letters" its the same principle mainly, even though i know all the chords, notes, etc. i taught myself to compose mores on the number method. it came natural. doing it from a math standpoint makes the creation of melodies easier to put together. If you had been exposed to numbers first then suggested letter instead, probably would be the same shock to the system.

    • @allanjeong
      @allanjeong 6 років тому

      Numbers and intervals are particularly useful (as mentioned in the video) because it enables one to play a song in any key based solely on the note intervals between the melodic notes, and between the melodic note and bass note play on (or sometimes after) the main down beats. For example: Play BASS note at 1, 3 or 5 intervals (plus 1 octave) BELOW melodic note played on (sometimes after) down beat with left-hand pinky. More often than not, play bass note at 1 or 5th interval below the melodic note for melodic note I, 5 for II, 3 for III, 1 for IV, 5 for V, 3 for VI, 3 for VII.
      Why is it useful to play a song in any key? 1) a singer might request the song be played in a key to match his/her vocal range (as mentioned in the video); and 2) one can't possibly remember the original key signature for every recorded song in existence when performing a song on the spot or by request. I will sometimes play a specific song in one key one day, and play it again in another key on another day without much thought.

      Well counting definitely is something everyone should learn but it doesn't cross instrument lines like learning the 7 major key cords and the sharp and flat rules for each of the12 keys. Ceg the c major cord is the same on the guitar or piano. I did study this method intently and appreciate the usefulnless of it for a keyboardist. I was able to play the 12 scales on the guitar because I learn them on piano. By the way Johnny B Gooden was awesome.

    to be honest wouldn't it be wiser to teach people chords not numbers??? because your having people memorize numbers not notes so when they are going to read music or told to play so and so chords or notes they are going to be lost because you brainwashed them with numbers lol like im on beginner status with piano and learned chords/notes and your whole numbering system messed with my head lol it totally makes sense but in reality nobody is going to ask you to play numbers but great tutorial tho

    • @PianoGeniusCom

      XxRGFxX "Knowing the "Number System" lets you understand the relationship between notes and chords. Without it you can't make sense of anything. It might seem like an extra step in the beginning, but it saves an enormous amount of time later.

      +LustyyOG Exactly. 145 or as you say 1451 (when goes back to the root). This is nothing new. It applies to any key. It follows the 12345678 which incidentally 'doh, re, mi, fah, soh, lah, ti, do' (sorry for spelling) is based on. And that has been around for a couple of centuries (google 'solfa').
