    It wasn't shown, but all the food scraps were scrubbed out with a finer sand further away from the water before cleaning up in the river.

    Back in the early 2000s. I worked for a wilderness therapy place called the Anasazi Fountain. I learned a lot from Zeak. Lots of the techniques you used in this video, bed role backpack, bow drill fire, and washing dishes with the sand. I owe a lot to zeak and the Anasazi Fountain.
    (Awesome video btw)

    What is the reason for using the bow drill on a hat? A hat is a important resource and shouldn't be used like that. Just wondering if there is a specific reason for it or could you have used a piece of bark or another item that is not a part of your clothing.

    • @prairiefirewildernessskills
      @prairiefirewildernessskills Рік тому

      The hat kept the bow drill out of the sand, soft sand makes a poor surface for firemaking. The hat made a firmer surface on top and works quite well 🙂

    O crap...and this is sad news for you Brother Junkyard...when you make your first Bow Drill Fire you are suppose to throw your bow and drill and hearth into the fire and give thanks to the "Fire Gods"...now I don't know if this is true but someone told me to do this and I did...so now according to Bush Craft lore... you gotta burn your first set...and believe me it's painful to do after all that hard work...unles it was a gift from a friend...they you keep it...and make your very own set to burn away to keep the tradition...lol.

      Most wildlife would rather avoid humans. Exceptions can occur such as with bears, and sometimes a buck deer at night that is being aggressive to protect it's territory. I have had more issues with buck deer at night than with Coyotes. In some areas Moose, Elk, Buffalo, and wild pigs should be avoided as much as possible as well. The main critter to be wary of is Skunks. They are prone to rabies. Raccoons and Opossums may come into camp if they smell food and are looking for any trash you left around, but they generally stay on the outskirts of a campsite if there is a campfire or lantern going. However, both can be aggressive when threatened. In some areas porcupines can be a nuisance like Opossums and Raccons. Coyotes might come in to investigate food smells, but it would be rare. They would rather wait for you to leave and then investigate any food smells. Most wild animals won't bother you unless you bother them and they are protecting young, or are injured, sick, or rabid. In wild areas, scout the area you want to camp in for Badger dens, Coyote dens, and other animal dens or nests. Check for other signs of wildlife, like bedding areas, animal trails used for getting to water, or that are used for general travel such as when deer move from a grazing area to a bedding location, or when Coyotes are traveling from a den to water or to hunt. Those are areas to avoid camping in. But, good for hunting.

    Maybe a dumb question but how do you avoid waking up with a snake sleeping on the ground like that always been curious

      to be honest, m not sure. i normally sleep in a tent, which provides protection but the rare times ive slept just on the ground, ive never had much more than a few bugs scrambling around. never had an issue with snakes though.

      That is kind of a myth. Not saying it can't happen, but it would be very rare for a snake that is generally afraid of human beings to crawl into bed with you. The main thing is to shake out any bedding that has been left laying on the ground before you get in it. If a snake ends up in your bed with you it was probably there when you got in it because it was left on the ground at some point while you were absent from camp. Keep bedding rolled up and off the ground when you aren't in it and you will be fine. About the only snake that is going to crawl into bed with you is a pet snake that is use to people and being handled. Wild snakes, like most wild animals, would rather avoid you.
      I would be more worried about scorpions and ticks. Insect repellant is an essential. I hate chiggers. However, if you spread some garden sulfur around where you are going to sleep it will help ward off the insects.
