  • Andy Maschke is an unbelievable saddle maker and craftsmen. Watch how he explains to me the proper way a reining saddle should fit a horses back. I definitely learned that one tree does not fit every horse back and why.

WOW I'm blown away to learn that in Europe there are liability laws for saddle fit. I'm a dressage rider and can't tell you how many custom saddle fitters I know of who have sold extremely expensive and ill fit saddles to well meaning owners.

    Excellent video Matt!
Thank you for bringing this information forward with Mr. Maschke's help. It always go's back to the old saying, "the more I learn, the more I didn't know!" Kudos to you Matt for putting yourself out there and admitting that you needed assistance in the saddle fitting dept. I can't wait to hear how your horses performances improve after the changes I bet you'll be making.

Such a great guy and a great help to you Matt.

Watched this session again. Just heard a local "trainer" say that saddle fit wasn't important because you could always adjust it with a saddle pad. Didn't agree with that statement then, definitely not now. Valuable information.

The rock in the tree CAN be an issue if your horse is super flat backed from front to back. If your horse is flat backed at a stand still without using his core and lifting his back, it will only create a pressure point in the middle of the back where most horses have the natural curvature. This will result in your horse being sore and hallowing his back down away from this pressure and not wanting to engage his core properly. Please always remember that you should have a fitter come and fit your particular horse as there are Soo many factors involved in fitting a saddle. Bar angle, gullet width, where the rigging is situated, where the seat pocket is for the rider, what type of work the horse does, and your own personal build and conformation. As well as if you or your horse have had any injuries or you or your horse have any asymmetries (as most people and horses do, that's normal!). I'm glad that the bigger trainers on UA-cam are starting to bring awareness to saddle fit. It's great to see! Best wishes and love your videos Matt!! 🙏❤️

This is one of my favorite videos so far. Are you going to replace the saddles you currently use and start fitting them for each horse? If you have your saddle maker come out to consult on specific horses I’d watch every single one of those videos. That could be a whole series. Would be so interesting to see how many different trees it would take and how each horses is different. Great stuff!!

Great insight ! I agree 100% about the back cinch being to low , big mistake . I seen some wrecks with horses trying to get a fly or horse fly under their belly and get their toe caught .....say good by to your tack when they roll on the ground with the saddle on .

Im a huge fan of omalene with a lil extra rice bran as well as good clean hay at all times. plus i firmly think a workout system is a must. like i started roping in 1989....cattle were bigger. so horse had to be stronger wo all this crap we got these days....so i keep old habits.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!! I use alfalfa cubes am and pm. Bermuda grass at noon. Either Nutrenas SafeChoice Original or Pro Elite grains 1- 4lbs per day. Rice bran on occasion to give a little extra. I also use Equine Omega Complete oil daily. Supplement wise I use SmartCombo by SmartPak.

I’m a little confused. How can you be a trainer if you have no knowledge of a horses physiology? Knowing how much the saddle fit affects the horses movement surely should be one of the first things you learn on your way to being a trainer? I don’t mean to be rude or disrespectful, I’m just assuming now that to be a trainer in the US is very different to being a trainer in the UK. We have to learn so much about the horses muscle structures & what can affect them before we can even think about becoming a trainer.
If, when you are on a horse that is being difficult or is having difficulty with what you are asking it to do would you not first look at the fit of the saddlery worn by that horse? If not then what would you look to as the cause of the problem, discounting physical injury of course? I’m very interested to know how things are done & dealt with over there.
An interesting video but something you should know before you ever buy a horse let alone train one. Baffled of the UK lol

Europeans be like: My horse put on 100g of weight, I'll have to ride bareback until the saddler has altered my saddle so my horse doesn't feel uncomfortable!
Americans be like: Saddles have different trees?

Let's stop confusing disrespect with educate 😑 cause in the end saddles which don't fit the horses back make bad performances and then it comes back to the saddle fitter who didn't make the costumer aware of it in the first place 😢
