I think that’s the gigantic gaping hole in relationship advice: if you have to keep upping the ante to keep the interest alive, at least one of you is not interested in the other. And that the advice is usually geared toward women… well, that’s another rant.

The bit about not being able to hash things in a "normal workplace' is very interesting and, I think, very British. In a lots of country it's normal to be honest with your feeling in the workplace and being able to resolve a conflict without being passive agressive show skills and experiences. I find it fun that it's the total opposite in the UK x)

My grandfather was from Yorkshire, and his name is Brian Jacques (no relation, as far as I’m aware), and my father shares the same name. This is the first time I’ve ever heard their names pronounced correctly by someone who doesn’t know them, and it’s made me oddly wistful and tearfully emotional. I live in the US, and I’ve only ever had one person (a high school picture day photographer) pronounce my last name correctly. Typically it’s some variation of a French-speaking or Spanish-speaking pronunciation. Hearing my family name in a family accent has me all welled up. Such a random and unrelated take on the video, but thank you for that!

I also used to struggle with feeling like I couldn’t be real or myself at work, and the work definitely suffered as a result because I was afraid of looking stupid or saying the wrong thing. I work with a family member now and while it definitely doesn’t work for anyone - we have that level of honesty and trust, as well as flexibility that in my case has really helped me grow professionally.

Idk if it was an actual invitation to comment- but i LOVE the complete seperation between my work and personal life. Im 22 and just my first full time job a few weeks ago, its good pay in a good part of the city, and its really far away from my actual home so theres no chance ill ever see anyone from work when im not there. Its a job where i have zero contact with my boss or co-workers outside of the building. Compared to most of my friends, who do get emails and texts outside work hours (even if they aren't expected to respond, i still think it interrupts their personal lives to get that contact from work). Also there is this whole thing with being trans i suppose (lol) where im very much in the closet at work in order to make good money (Its fucking sad, but if youre out as trans you dont get the same opportunities). For me the division between work and personal life is kind of essential for my survival, because it helps me to have a version of myself thats just for me, and a version of myself that can go into work and be paid a living wage with an alright job. Which is something i may not have access too if i was 'more authentic'

As someone who grew up with self employed parents, I'd like to say that your work relationship sounds very healthy. I'm glad to hear that you did the paperwork and all. My parents never did. I worked for both my parents for almost a decade and we never put it on paper; it all came down to trust. It worked great with my mum, but not with my dad. Also, since dad started his business when I was 10, I basically worked for him since then and mostly for free. I think it makes a huge difference that Craig have worked elsewhere, before becoming employed to you. I never knew that there should be contracts involved; I didn't even know that I should've been paid or how unreasonably small my hourly pay was, when mom started paying me. When I later started working a "real job", alongside helping out dad and working for my mom, I didn't even know to question that pay either (which in part is also a lack of education in school). Yes, I am burnt out today, thank you very much.

All the same stuff about not policing other people's thoughts and not being able to build a relationship instantly, but instead my partner and I don't mind if it goes beyond a crush.... I'd be surprised if we ended up with another person in either of our lives in a similar way (especially cause I think I have CFS and no spare energy, and my partner is aromantic and a bit oblivious to romantic advances), but maybe in a different way? But yeah, either of us wanting something else wouldn't mean throwing out everything we've built in our 6 years so far

Love all these answers so much! This is the kind of relationship I want in the future.
I’m a huuuge fan of doing a post-argument post-mortem. For me, in the past it’s led to both getting closer + happier with someone, and break ups. Either way it’s positive, what you want from your relationship becomes clearer each time.
My opinion on the crush thing has changed a lot over time. Tbh I still feel that jealousy so at this point in my life (I’m 25 so that probs has a lot to do with it lmao) I don’t want to hear about it, but I accept it happens and it’s fine - it happens to me too so I can’t be a hypocrite. One day I’m sure I’ll be in a relationship where my partner can tell me about a harmless crush and it won’t bother me at all.
I think a lot of this comes from maturity + experience and understanding that something can make you uncomfortable, but nobody’s in the wrong. Wanting a lot of control over your partner is understandable in some ways, especially if you’re really insecure, but it doesn’t mean you’re OWED anything and doesn’t make it healthy or okay to enforce.
I struggle a lot with knowing what I should accept in relationships, and also knowing when it’s fair to project my emotions onto someone. Seeing videos like this and hearing people in healthy relationships talk about things is so, so helpful! ❤

I teach the industrial revolution and one of the sections we cover is 'Canal Mania'. There are songs. I feel like Craig might enjoy a canal song.

I’m from the north of Derbyshire which is very different from the city of Derby itself. We, (almost everyone I know) agree we feel much more northern than Midlanders.

Hair is so gender though! Conversely, as a non-binary person I feel more feminine with shorter hair, and more masculine/androgynous with long hair.
Lovely to see Craig and hear from you both
