Last year I wanted to draw 100 Pokémon. My mum pointed out that was a high bar, so I ended up halving the goal to 50. At the time I thought “this will be too easy” but lo and behold, she was right. I didn’t have to draw two every week and was able to catch up when I had other stuff on some months! Ultimately I drew 54, so I have a sketchbook full of Pokémon (one per page) rather than giving up when I fell behind. So fully endorse this idea.
This year, my goal is to do 25 social activities!

I love these, but I want to add two points from my own experience:
    1. Resolutions don't need to follow the calendar year: As a person who grew up in sunny Florida, but now live in the UK with short gray winter days, I really feel the difference in how my body feels in winter in a colder, darker climate. It makes me want to curl up with a book, paint, rest, etc. Thinking of January and February as a time to rest to bloom brighter and stronger in spring feels a lot more natural. Perhaps one could have a Spring Equinox resolution instead or let resolutions follow work patterns (resolutions for a new school year). I'm unsure where I heard this quote, but it seems fitting, "We don't expect a flower to bloom in winter;" why should we expect ourselves to?
    2. When I make resolutions, I add something like "work towards" or "try to" the beginning of my resolutions. That way, I can be clear on intentions but without the stress. For example, in the example of running 10x per month, if I am working towards that, if I manage 3x the first month, that's fine, I'm working towards 10. If I manage 10 runs one month, but only 5 the next because I got sick or something, I am still working towards that consistency. I find it a helpful mental trick to combat my tendency towards anxiety and perfectionism.

i love bingo cards but not for goals, instead for "bucket list" type things to spice my life up. i do a different one each season that's themed around the season e.g. cooking an autumnal recipe, having a spa day. it helps to stop me from defaulting to watching youtube/tv to relax and to make memories doing silly things

Something else I like to do, especially for goals where it makes sense to be something I do every day (like going outside or washing the dishes) is have a high bar / low bar system for tracking it. Going on a walk or to the shops gets me the high bar tick, but sticking my head out onto the balcony gets me the tick too. Having a clear sink when I go to bed gets the high bar tick, but doing a single dish before bed still gets the low bar tick. Much more motivating this way.

My government asked me a few months ago to go get a specific list of things in case of emergency. Electricity or water cuts out - I should be prepared.
I didn't prepare. Because whole-arsing a long list of items (some expensive to buy, some I use and re-stock like canned foods) is hard!!
But I need to half arse it!!
I am going to get three vital things:
    1) cans for storing 20 litres of water.
    2) a portable/chargable radio because my phone doesn't give emergency signals and you need information.
    3) an outdoor cooking kit. I have wanted on for ever for hiking. Now I have a second reason to buy it.
Half arsing is soooo much better than nothing! ❤

I draw doodles of my goals and colour them when I get to them. At the end of the year, the entire goals page is not coloured, but it's still pretty. And I feel accomplished everytime I did something. Granted, some of my goals are "going to the cinema x amount of time" but I know I won't do it if I don't fix it as a goal. I'll instead stay home and watch UA-cam videos for hours asking myself why I'm not happy. So colouring it is !

Reframing consistency is a good one! what I find very important is to still consistently give myself the opportunity to do the thing. For example: Ideally I would like to work out every morning. so I plan in a way that carves out 30min for working out every morning, and my gear is easily ready etc. and if I'm just too tired or get sick, or if I really really do not feel like it, i don't do it.

I am working on letting myself not have to do things every day. I used to have a daily yoga practice for 3 years and I missed like 5 days in that entire time, but post Autistic burnout I struggle to do frankly anything a lot of the time and now I have long covid too which has made it even harder.
Reminding myself that it doesn't have to be every day to be a success is hard but helpful.

I actually made a bingo card this year!
It includes things I have to do anyways, like get a haircut and do my taxes, and silly things like pet 10 dogs and learn how to metal scream, but most of all are fitness mini challenges.
I have already walked every day for a week and I notice I feel better when I go for a walk, so I have mostly continued. The biggest goals are to get 1 pull up and 1 chin up this year, when I don't remember ever doing those before.

The only goals I set for each year are a reading goal and some experiences I'd like to have (last year it was to try different food stalls at the market!)
I also tend to do it around my birthday as it feels less arbitrary and more personal :)
Can't wait to read half arse human once I'm done with this intensive course of psychotherapy - don't want to take on too much self improvement at once!
I find your videos so motivating :) I'm trying to read more widely this year after a long time in survival mode not having the capacity to stretch my reading muscles, as well as my usual numeric goal. I haven't figured out an experience I want yet as I have some big holidays planned unexpectedly, but lately I'm feeling like I'd like to do more long walks on weekends 🤔 we shall see!

I’m having quite a success with this year’s resolution, to watch less ads.
I think in part because it’s not an absolute, it’s just less ads, not no ads. But more importantly this is my first resolution to place the blame outside instead of inside. It’s not me that’s wrong, it’s the media, it’s the system.
Side tip. When I get too many ads on UA-cam I close it and don’t pick it up the rest of the day, when I open it the next day there are way less ads. I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or the algorithm, just thought people could test it if they wanted.

As someone with ADHD the stuff about consistency is so on point, because essentially I have a brain that doesn't LET me be consistent. I'm medicated for said ADHD and it does help a lot and I'm generally doing a lot better but it's still just like yeah I'm still dropping the ball a lot.
For an added complication I'm also autistic and dyspraxic so I've basically got a brain that's constantly fighting itself, and it's exhausting. And yeah due to various factors my life has been quite 'Look the main goal right now is continuing to exist' for a good while.

I'm also AuDHD as well as chronically ill and was starting to build up my life a little past "the main goal is to continue existing", when last year my partner suggested having a theme to the year instead of a goal.
We had "the year of enrichment" where the idea was to try to do more things that fuel curiosity or just... Make you genuinely feel a bit better.
So stuff like: take photos, go on a walk and notice what everyone is doing with their gardens/weird decorations, try a new recipe or a new cafe, go to the library, listen to a bit of new music, learn a type of origami, learn some plant names, see what happens when you try something hard and lose your shit at it... Like it can literally be anything that you personally find enriching to your life.
Idk there was something that worked about it cause it didn't feel like a restrictive goal or something to fail at, but it gave me a bit of momentum!

I love so much of what you’re saying. I listened to the audiobook the first week of January and so many aspects of it resonated with me! From work to attempting veganism to crafting to friendships.. yeah, I need to buy the book and highlight all the bits I want to go back to (actually seeing you in Nuneaton this week so will grab a copy then!). I especially love the idea of half arsing veganism, I’m slowly trying new things like oat milk in my tea and eating out vegan and like the idea of doing one day on, one day off. And with crafting, I love dressmaking but get overwhelmed with all the project ideas until I’m so overwhelmed I don’t make anything because the thought of all the tasks gives me a kind of decision paralysis. But love the idea of halving the amount you want to do and not overloading yourself with tasks. I am guilty of feeling like I have to match the output of the people I follow on social media and it makes me resent my hobby so definitely looking to change that this year 😊

This is a rare book of advice that doesn't sound like it was written to make me ick.
I have just survived 2024 and that was enough but a lot of those responsibilities have gone now. I think I need to think about what choices and agency I have again.

😂 yes I must admit when I was listening to the audio book, I was shocked when you straight up called me an arsehole. Not just one, but multiple types 😂 Alas, here I am, now quite accepting of the fact I have been a hovering arsehole for years 😂😂

January in my opinion is the worst time to start planning your year-end maybe because my birthday is January 2 so I'm used to everyone being in another co u try or depressed for my only celebration of January! No, I give myself theDecember month to start trying new ideas as others are likely to support this cheer too and so there is room in January to not feel like a failure as well as blue because I've already trialed and errored during the more festive time and if I'm doubt I just start again in Spring! 💗

Omg bingo card is such a good idea. I don't do NY resolutions because I think it's destined to fail, but creating a bit of a fun card summary of what I want seems like a useful but non pressured way of keeping track. Thanks Leena! When will the book be out in paperback?

My 4 year anniversary of quitting smoking is coming up soon. Because my new years resolution for 2021 was to quit smoking. Not at midnight at new year. But at some point during the year. I contacted the NHS stop smoking service in december in advance. Had my first call with them beginning of january. Got my nicotine replacement sorted etc. And then I quit. And then when I slipped up, I hadn’t screwed up the resolution- I could start again immediately.

And I'm starting to question my perception. I don't think that was the intention with this video. So I'm leaving. See y'all next week
