    I remember in bootcamp I smacked a mosquito off my neck. My company commander then made me pick up that mosquito, dig a hole, bury the mosquito, name the mosquito, then say it a prayer in front of all the other companies.... good times

    Update: November 14, 2019. I’m a behind the scenes kind of guy so when GQ called me to be in front of the camera, I was incredibly nervous-absolute trepidation. Three weeks later and over 5.5 million views, the messages of encouragement, love and support have been profoundly appreciated. I try to read everyone of them and respond if I can. Sincerely grateful to GQ for the opportunity they gave me. Hope we can do it again in the future. And thank you all for watching.
    Original Post-To clear up some misconceptions 1) No, I was not dishonorably discharged. Honorable discharge after eight years as a Marine infantryman 2) yes, after the military I gained weight. War and depression will do that and I’m working on it. 3) I did not serve in Iraq, I served in Afghanistan. 4) a correction is needed, I was incorrect to say the lower receiver of an M-16A1 was made by Mattel, it appears I was taught a myth while in the Marines, which is also not uncommon. 5) I did not know what movies or scenes would be shown to me, so everything was off the top of my head. 6) Thank you to everyone who enjoyed watching the video 7) if you didn’t enjoy it, that’s okay, no hate here. 8) I can’t control the sound of my voice, apologies for that.

      I do get that training has to be that hard, but I still do not condone this kind of behaviour. It just destroys a part of us. It is actually really sad. I believe there can be other methods of training an army without hazing. But please do correct me if I am wrong.
      Still I got loads of respect for soldiers because I know for sure, I couldn't endure anything of that kind.

      @@Leprutz Well that's kind of the point of boot camp. They break you down (destroy a part you, as you put it) and rebuild you as a marine. It's supposed to be brutal because the things one may encounter during deployment will make boot camp look like Disneyland.

      at some point in life, when you've done your job, and you are a man of intellect, you'd actually be wiser after seeing all those dark sides of being alive. I have a boss, and he was in the war, seeing people being tortured alive and even after they're passing away, having to comply with a small amount of food to protect his family, having to defend himself in a situation when you actually have to put a man down with anything you have, and after all of those things and we are at peace now, he is like the nicest and the most patient person I've ever known, you can actually see it in his eyes tho, the pain and suffering, and that some part of his humanity is dead. But still, he is wise, he's not yelling in the street, and or doing stupid things, instead, he's become a more intellectual person, and teach the young how to be a man.

    9:22 Just a little correction. Combat Medics during WW2 absolutely carried weapons, however Desmond Doss was a devout pacifist and refused to disobey one of the Ten Commandments that’s says you should not kill. The fact that he saved that man lives without a weapons is what is spectacular.

    • @bravehome4276
      @bravehome4276 2 роки тому +50

      It was a very heroic thing for him to do in light of his interpretation of the 6th Commandment. However, most modern Bibles now correctly translate the Hebrew as stating “thou shall not murder“ versus “thou shalt not kill“. Otherwise the behavior of the old testament Hebrew armies would’ve been violating God’s direct command while under his command.

Especially with scenes like the Blackhawk (Edit: some folks have pointed out blackhawks weren't in service in Vietnam, thanks for the correction!) minigunner screaming "get some!" while indiscriminately massacring fleeing Vietcong troops, the second half of the movie tends to show the Marines as cold and unfeeling. It also (at least in my opinion) seemed to give the impression that they weren't actually there to accomplish any objective, and were really just there to kill NVA soldiers.

    As a Navy veteran I can completely agree with the last point he made. In any military movie, it is the tiny details that drive us crazy, not the big ones. For example, in the worst Navy movie ever made, Under Siege, it didn't bother me that a highly trained Navy SEAL was now the personal chef to the captain of an battleship, as stupid as that seems. What drove me crazy the most was GOLD SHOULDER BOARDS on a navy chief. Only admirals wear gold shoulder boards. That one detail makes the movie unwatchable, even more than Steven Seagal's acting.

    I did Army Basic in the early 90's, I remember one of my drill sergeants, he was a tank driver, never raised his voice louder than needed to be heard, but he explained his teaching method the second day we were there as the three T's, first he'd teach us, then he'd test us and if we f'd it up, he'd torture us, we got really good at pushups and leg lifts. Our lead instructors goal was we would excel on drill and ceremony and aptitude tests or we'd excel at physical fitness, by the end we were top in all three. The only week we didn't have the lead platoon banner on our flag was one miserable week. Of course we started with 60 and only 46 of us graduated, vs the other three platoons in the company lost about 8 combined out of 180. They never endorsed or allowed hazing, really wasn't needed. Fair but tough is how I would describe them all. All of us wanted to quit at some point I'm sure, but it was definitely worth it.

    • @janhill7383
      @janhill7383 2 роки тому +1

      I did Army BCT in 1970, very similar to what you described. Lots of PT as training or motivation. We were also tops in all 3. We graduated about 110 of the 160 that started. Many were re-cycled for physical reasons, more were still hospitalized. And a bunch were AWOL - they were drafted. Could not believe how many failed to qualify with the rifle, that was 2 weeks re-cycle to the range. Rifle expert was easy for me but I grew up a deer hunter in Western Pa. Some of them caught up to us at AIT but we were half way through. The drill sgts. Were hard but mostly fair.
      The movie STRIPES was filmed at Ft. Knox and yes there were a lot of tanks on the roads all day, all night and weekends too. At least when I was there. Those were M-60 tanks in the film. Sgt. Hulka was realistic. I lived in the old 2 story wood barracks, many of them burned down, they were fire traps.
