Puma foams and Lightstrike Pro are my two favourite midsole foams recently, so your analysis makes huge sense to me. Puma are currently my daily workout shoes and the Adios and Takumi are my performance shoes. If the SL2 is a daily hit and the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 is more of a racer I'll be spoilt for choice. Great video!
Those who love a firmer ride definitely have the brothers from Germany to thank. I’m really looking forward to the SL 2 and putting it head to head with this shoe.
Thanks for that excellent analysis. I came to Puma 2 years ago after running for over 40 years in every shoe brand that exists and some that no longer exist.
I was blown away by how good their shoes are. I liked the Velocity 2, but I love the 3s. I retired my 2s at 1200 KMS, and I could have gone further.
Because I'm now 60, this shoe reminds me of the shoes of the distance past without all the add-ons I don't need in a daily trainer. As you pointed out, it's a firmer shoe, so runners who like something like the Asics Cumulus lovers will likely hate it - I like the Cummulus for walking.
It's narrower than many North American shoes and Asian ones directed at the North American market, but European shoes often are more narrow. It's neutral, but given the dual density, I think mild overpronators should be fine. I'm a light OP forefoot runner with no issues with this shoe. I guess if the midsole were softer, it might be a problem.
You might have talked about the value. For what you are getting for the excellent price, it's hard to beat.
Because of its length, I need to size half a size down. This goes for the five different pairs of Pumas I own. I think they need to align their sizing with other brands.I fit true to size in a men's size 9 in every other brand.
The other item I think they need to consider is making the uppers on their trainers more breathable.
But Puma is cranking out terrific runners. I am a convert.
I agree… the overall firmness of the platform is likely enough to be ok for mild pronators… but then again the height of the platform may not be. It’s definitely one of those shoes one needs to try.
I didn’t mention the price as I don’t often talk about that on the channel… but I paid $91 USD on day of release… that’s tremendous value.
What’s odd is all design and development for running is done out of Boston. But their factories must use Euro lasts. It’s an interesting mix for sure. Even Adidas as modernized their last recently.
Right now I cool Taipei winter (12-20c) the upper is doing well. Once it gets in the low 30c here… I don’t know. I’m curious how well they will do with high heat and humidity.

It isn't a dual density foam. It is only Puma's Nitro foam, Sir. I agree, Puma has released some fantastic shoes in the past 2-3 years and they are going strong/even stronger this year. I think their shoes are still sort of overlooked by many, although I see more and more people running in Puma's here in London. Can't wait to see/wear the Deviate Nitro Elite 3 this summer. I currently only own a pair of Deviate Nitro 2 and it is a terrific shoe.

I bought the Deviate Nitro 2 last year and it became my do-it-all shoe. It is very comfortable with a springy but not sinking feel. At almost 600 miles, the outsole has considerable wear at my toe-off area but the foam still feels great. I'll be keeping my eye out for v3.
I’ll be covering the Deviate Nitro 3… I wanted to start here though to get a baseline to compare their plated performance trainer too. I’m looking forward to that shoe.

Fantastic schoes! Thank you for your review. When I first put them with thin socks, my right foot next to the tongue got irritated. After using thicker stock, the problem disapierd and love them.
I’ve been using a lightweight sock, the same as most of my other shoes, with no problems. The upper is very accommodating in that way.
I've been watching Puma for a while. Might try this shoe sometime in the summer.
These are a good place to start in on the brand. Especially since there are sales all over the place often on the shoe.
Comprehensive review as always. I would seriously consider this shoe if it wasn't for the 10 mm drop, which seems aggressive for a daily trainer. A 6 mm drop would be ideal. Thanks.
I’m used to a 10mm drop after years of running in the Pegasus… so I’m ok with it. It would much prefer this shoe to have a 6-8mm drop.

change the insole. puma's insole in the velocity series is not flat, and is 2mm thicker in the heel. The midsole itself is 8mm drop, so when combined with the stock insole the total drop is 10mm.
I've done it with the velocity 2. I change the insole with a flatter one from another shoe, and they feel better due to the change of the total drop.
it will however change the cushion character because puma stock insole is actually very good. it is firmer and dense, so adds some cushioning in total to the shoe.
I’m in the same boat as you with PUMA; this was my first and I love it. The break in with this shoe is so true. It went from stiff and harsh to amazing at 30 miles for me.
PUMAGRIP is better than continental for me tho. I have taken this shoe in snow, mud, heavy rain, and even patches of ice (the crispy sidewalk kind). I’m amazed at the confidence I have in those conditions in this shoe.
I feel everyone should have a strong basic daily trainer in their rotation. My plated shoes feel so fast after having the velocity on foot for a bit.
I can see where PumaGrip works on snow/ice very well, also do to their outsole patterns. Luckily, snow/ice is something I almost never contend with anymore.
Totally agree on everyone needing a strong and reliable basic daily trainer. It is why I find the category so exciting.

Grew up with Puma, and then they were "gone"... forgotten, other brands became more famous, also more expensive.... then I saw Puma more and more and looking for window when its time for me to jump in.
Its similiar with new balance... I think the SC trainer 3 will be the shoe I jump on NB.
For Puma, still not sure, this one looks very interesting.
TPEE is very interessting, Li-ning also uses a supercritical tpe foam (its not peba as some people say) and I absolutely love it, most funny midsole I ever ran in. When Puma does it simliar with such a low price tag, thats just amazing and makes their shoes super interesting to me.

Ya, the pricing for Puma is what’s insane. They do use Nitro foam (and I believe it was developed outside of running) in other lines, but still. Not sure how they are doing it but they are.

I tried to find some on sale and it is kinda hard to find commons sizes available that are on sale.
Otherswise look at ON... billions in marketing, of course the prices go up. I havent seen a Puma adv in years. Definitely a brand to oberserve more, thanks for reading also all the comments

Thanks for the comprehensive review. You mentioned that this nitro foam is a firm ride, just wondering how it is compared to the lightstrike that is in the Adizero SL. After 50 miles in the SLs, the feel like they’ve reach that sweet spot of firmness for me. Also, how does that his shoe compare as a daily trainer to the Peg 40s? Do you find the Zoom Air midsole still viable after running in the VN3
The shoes are comparable to the Adizero SL in feel and break in. There is much more Nitro foam in this so the ride is more energetic… the little puck of LSP in the SL doesn’t compare. Puma ProFoam is firmer than Lightstrike 2.0. But the shoes run similar in feel oddly.
As for the Peg 40… that’s a hard one. I have thousands of KMs in the Pegs and am trying not to compare the older shoes to this new one. I will do direct comparisons to the Peg 41 though as they are same model year. I will say I still prefer the flex of the Peg 40 overall but like the energy return of the Nitro foam over the Air Zoom bags in the forefoot of the Peg.
Thanks for pointing out the potential issue for pronators @ 14:40. It looks like the shoe has substantial sole flare on outer edge, but not much on inside medial edge. I have tried shoes like this before where you feel like shoe is canting your foot inwards. That is a bummer for me since I am mild pronator on left side. I will still try them out and report back.
Definitely try them. It looks like they tried to mitigate it somewhat in the upper don’t may work if your pronation is very mild. Even a few mms of medial flare would have solved this…
I’m curious how you will get on with them. They are an excellent trainer!
I have the Velocity Nitro 2 in my rotation with 550 km and is a great shoe. And yes, it is long (the v2 anyways) but really like it. And the Puma Grip is great as far as I am concerned. I have run on wet pavement with no issues.
Good to know they have always used a long last for this model. It’s not new to the v3.

I told you… it’s a LOONNGG shoe. Yes, 9 US men’s (27cm). The foreground and focus I film shoes with also makes the shoe look a little bigger (by design).
I have three puma Velocity Nitro 2 with me right now,the biggest reason for me buying them is the outsole grip,which is pretty good.Velocity 3 I would only buy if it's weight remains the same.
The weight is nearly identical between the 2 (264g) and 3 (262g, give or take manufacturing tolerances between individual shoes.
I overpronate a lot with the Velocity Nitro 2 ,but the problem for me was not losing speed or getting tired faster because of the pronation. The problem for me occurred when the middlesole twisted in a way that it stayed twisted. My.pair "broke" at 100km ran. I believe that the resilience of Velocity 3 is much better that almost seems to have a torsion system plate thing from Adidas, inside this Puma shoes.
Anyway, I would like to try these shoes in a store when they become available.
The midsoles in these are all foam… but the added stack height and new balance of Nitro to ProFoam may help resolve your issue. Worth a try if you loved the VN2.
Do you plan on getting the new Metaspeed(s)? If you don’t already have them 😝. I’ve heard that the shoe to get is now the Edge because of the new foam and stack. It would be interesting to have your point of you about how they upgraded this duo and why many pros and BITR prefer the Edge over the Sky now!
I’ll be picking up the Edge Paris next week. It seems like an Asics race shoe I might finally get on with. Stay tuned.

If it rides similar to the Adidas Supernova Rise Dreamstrike midsole that VN3 is going to a winner in terms of value for money when Puma begins slashing prices later this year. My experience with Puma running shoes are same as yours. They disappear on foot, excellent traction in wet pavement, dirt and gravel roads. I wished they lowered the drop a bit to 8mm like the Deviate Nitro 2 and put the extra 2mm in the forefoot area😂😂😂
I haven’t run in the Supernova Rise yet (it’s not here in Taiwan yet) but the PEBA for in there will feel very different to this. I will be covering the Rise when I can get it… I’ll see if a “vs” is warranted… they are slightly different classes of shoes.
Puma would do much better with a 6-8mm drop I think. Due to the firmness of their platform it would make an actual difference.
Puma grip lowkey works well on icy roads just as well as continental rubber, but continental has the edge for durability
Luckily, ice is something I rarely contend with anymore… but durability is a huge thing for me.
Well influenced LOL - just bought a pair. A shoe that looks long and narrow ought to suit my long and narrow foot shouldn't it! Plus 5-6mm drops in the Mach 6 & Rebel v4 never totally convince me. Only concern is that I felt the foam in the Velocity Nitro 2 went "flat" on me at 100 miles and I didn't run in them again.

Got Deviate nitro 2 last year, and loved the shoes for awhile, especially puma grip which is so amazing and super durable, but midsole seemed to lose bounce quite suddenly for me around 150-200 miles even though the rest of the shoe looks pretty much brand new especially after a short wash. Still comfy enough to jog easy and use and puma grip outsole looks like could last another 300 -400 miles, but the cushion of the midsole just seems dying super fast for me and seemed to have lost a lot of spring from the plate even. Still like the shoes but started being a bit disappointed. Also, my size is weirdly stuck in a half size for pumas. Need a 40.5 - not 40. Not 41. Makes it a bit awkward to buy the right size, often not in stock locally.
150-200mi is decent usage out of a performance trainer. I’d expect any performance foam to begin to break down at that point. Still usable but not with the magic it once had.
Thanks for the heads up on the foam though. I’ll keep an eye on it for my longer durability review…
The heel slip on the velocity 2 was shocking, hopefully the velocity 3 has fixed this.
I can’t see how there could be any heel slip in the VN3. It’s a deeper pocket in the heel with tons of padding and a stout heel counter.
Coming from Pegasus 40, is this Puma a better shoe?
Or better to wait for Pegasus 41 and/or turbo?

The Puma is a firmer but more responsive ride. If you have always thought the Peg40 felt a little “dead” this may be worth a try.
I have some concerns about the Peg41 and how soft it might be due to ReactX and the Turbo is almost totally unknown. I will do comparisons with both though.

Did you find the finitions/quality control good? Because on the VN2 it was somewhat terrible.
And for the upper, VN2 was a sponge 🧽 when raining, really retaining water and became very heavy, what your thoughts on VN3?
For the future P41/Turbo, perhaps the P41 = more cushion/confort because a turbo version more firmer/performant is on the way.
The upper on the VN3 is certainly rather thick. I’ve run in it in the rain twice now and it did fine. I’m more worried about super hot/humid summer weather… that might be a problem.
You may be right about the Peg41/Turbo.. we shall see. I’m excited for both but since reservations from what I have seen.
How are these on runs over 10 miles? Seeing mixed reviews online about distance; some say they can go long, some say nothing over 10. I understand that they are on the firmer side, and that’s ok. Mainly curious if there’s any leg saving qualities here or if I should just go with the magnify nitro 2 that is indeed a long run shoe.
I find 10mi/16k to be their sweet spot and I’ve done multiple runs of that distance in them. Nothing further yet. But at 10mi/16k I have no issues and don’t see why I could t keep going in them.
As for leg savings… it’s a TPEe foam… similar to Lightstrike Pro… my legs feel the same afterwards… but definitely not a PEBA feel here, especially post run.

@Hypnogogic Notro foam is very similar in how it breaks in and runs. It doesn’t quite have the same rebound/energy return… but it’s in the same general area.
I'm the same, i love a basic daily trainer and this was my first Puma shoe!. It's a solid shoe, no complaints.
That’s the best way to describe this shoe… “a solid shoe”… it really is, just gets the job done and done well.
Isn't the puma forever run nitro a batter velocity now? I believe it is lighter, has more cushioning for those who need it, has stability that works with neutral runner very well, entire midsole is dual density nitro foam and has puma grip outsole, and is only about 10 usd more expensive than the velocity 3.
I don’t know… the specs on the VN3 are just about ideal for what I expect from a neutral daily trainer. The FRN is too big for my tastes.
i use right now ascis gt 2000 12, if iam going to nitro 3 , is better than ascis ?

The GT 2000 12 is Asics’s core stability shoe… so if you actually need a stability shoe I’d not look at the Velocity Nitro 3. Puma’s lite stability option is the ForeverRun Nitro model. You may want to look at that instead.

I don’t run in stability shoes so I’ve not run in it or plan too. Kofuzi has a recent review on it though.

I am using Puma’s own marketing line there… but I agree with you on the VF3. That one is special.
My personal philosophy on the “correct” training shoe to use has been to remember why I am training - to get better and faster but all the while also avoiding injury. That means some shoes are just too aggressive for me and my ego is hurt a bit by running a bit slower on training workouts. A sad necessity as I have gotten older and my little injuries that used to take 1 week to get over now take 3 weeks to return to normal. 😊

It will handle it but the Puma Deviate Nitro may be a better option for racing. Or a proper super shoe.

velocity nitro 3 or superblast ?
These two shoes aren’t in the same category at all. The VN3 is a basic trainer and the SB is a performance trainer/super shoe.
However, I’d say it comes down to what you are trying to accomplish.
Go VN3 if you just want a solid do anything daily trainer for general running.
Go SB if you need a shoe to train for a half or full marathon, possibly even race it.

I find Adidas outsole the best.
100% agree. The only outsole better is Vibram Megagrip Litebase over on the trial side.
Second best to Puma grip.
Ha. Everyone loves the Pumagrip… and I’m finding it very solid… but it’s not as remarkable as it has been talked about to me. Adidas Continental rubber outsoles grip and wear much better for me.
Let me see how the Punagrip is holding on after over 100minor more though….

They do make the ForeverRun Nitro... which is sort of a more structured Velocity Nitro...
If you think these are good just wait until you try the Triumph 20 and soon Triumph 22 with a premium midsole update.
Ha! I have low expectations of anything Saucony… but I’ll try to get to them at some point.
@Running How come you say that when you've not tried it yet? The Endorphin line has been very successful since the beginning especially the Speed series and has been very popular with everyday runners
@@NeillyVille I have little faith in Saucony’s tech stack from past experiences. But the Triumph 22 is a shoe I was curious about from TRE… so I’ll keep an eye out for it.
