For what it's worth--years later and for the sake of UA-cam historians decades from now--this review convinced me to spring for one. I play acoustic guitars exclusively fingerstyle so I asked the guitar tech to set mine up with an action closer to Taylor acoustics. From what I've seen, they seem to play fine out of the box/bag, so that may be unnecessary. Also, the way these are marketed, one would think you need to be a rugged outdoorsman or someone who constantly ventures into environments in which a wood guitar will disintegrate before you can get the strap on. Not so. It's also for those who simply want a worry free guitar no matter where you take it--the back yard, to a beach hotel, etc. A worry-free guitar is worth the price. Thanks for the review!
Hi Dave, thanks for this. This is the best live demo of the OF660 I've seen and I'm now sold. I just picked one up for an amazing price and I can't wait for it to arrive. Question: if I do the 1-month trial subscription and then sign up for the lifetime model, would I just pay the difference between the two or the whole fee? Thanks UPDATE: Got the OF660 in gloss black and it sounds even better IRL - much punchier bass, I absolutely love it. I also signed up for the lifetime subscription (I much prefer not paying monthly) and the course is brilliant and worth every penny, though I just want to use fingers and no pick! Thanks Dave. I also bought a Roadie 3!
Hey Dave! Love your videos man, I can’t find any other tutorials nearly as good as yours! I was gonna buy a Klos guitar after seeing your review literally this week and then I saw this so now I don’t know 😆. Do you have any opinions on pros and cons of the two guitars or what you like better?
Hey Caleb! Thanks the for kind words. So the main difference I’d say is that the detaching mechanism is much more convenient on JI guitars. Klos requires you to screw the neck on and off with a screwdriver if you’re taking it apart. The JI carrying case is built for travel as well too. The OF660 guitar is much louder and warmer than the Klos as it has a bigger body. The Klos body is much smaller so in that regard it’s super light and very easy to have as a lap guitar. I haven’t played the full size Klos which just came out recently so can’t comment on that as have the small travel Klos. I do really enjoy playing my Klos as well, I use it in bed as it’s tiny. But as a guitar to perform and really enjoy I like the OF660 more as it has bottom end to it and a fuller sound. Sorry to confuse things for you! Haha
Thanks Dave! No worries about confusing me haha this way after some thought I’ll be sure if my decision! Once again great videos man thank you for them my guitar playing took a huge leap when I started watching your videos
Could you maybe do some more videos geared to begineers but at the same time somone like me how wants more of a challenge except at the beginning level?
Please do a tutorial on satisfied by Shawn Mendes . Ps. Love your channel has really helped me to play some of my favorite songs and riffs . Please keep doing what your doing Dave 🔥
Hi Dave I just posted a comment similar to this on your 2018 video comparing five different travel guitars, asking you to compare the carbon fiber version of Journey's travel guitar with the Klos, the Lava Me 2 and any other dreadnought body carbon fiber travel guitar that you're aware of. A carbon fiber travel guitar is definitely what I need given all the travel and adventuring I do and the extreme temperature and humidity variations that guitar will be exposed to. I've found lovely reviews on many of these on UA-cam, but none that compare and contrast all of them in a single video. I would dearly love to see you do a comparison of the various dreadnought carbon fiber travel guitars if you have the time, and I believe there are many others like me out there. Many thanks for all of your amazing videos!
Hi Carole, Thanks for giving more info on your needs. So here's my take on the 3 guitars: OF660 - The biggest body of the bunch. Sounds great with overall smooth tone and solid bottom end. It's essentially a full size guitar in terms of scale length and nut width. The folding mechanism is amazingly convenient and it packs into a backpack that has really been thought out. Con is that it's the most expensive. You would have zero issues checking this in an airplane overhead compartment. Klos - The smallest body out of the 3 and the lightest, which ofcourse results in the thinnest sound. But that makes this great for carrying around. Really well built though and a super durable body. The neck is made from wood though so it's not completely carbon fiber. Smaller nut width and scale length so easy to play. The neck is detachable but it is more cumbersome to take on/off because it requires a screwdriver. Lava Me 2 - Awesome sound for it's size and the built in effects feature is awesome. It is carbon fibre but I feel the carbon fiber is not at the some durability as the other two as I have started seeing some scratches on my Lava 2 although that could just be the paint finish wearing off. Smaller nut width and scale length so easy to play. There's my overview. I hope that helps, but I feel ideally you should try to play them in person if possible as you'll get a better feel. It's hard for me to say one is better than any other as they all serve different purposes.
@@GuitarZero2Hero Thanks so much, this is super helpful. What a difficult decision. Not sure where/how I could play all three, but I live in Portland, OR (USA) and am close to Seattle, so those major cities would be more likely to have them in shops than smaller cities, though I'd probably have to order the Lava via Amazon to gain access to one and then just return it before the 30 days is up if I go with one of the other two. I absolutely LOVE the Lava's built in effects. I can see that feature will be incredibly inspiring in terms of making me want to play it a lot! I also really love the basic sound of it and the price, but for portability (especially on an airplane) you just can't beat the detachable neck on the other two. Even though the Lava is carbon and hence quite durable, I don't like the idea of possibly being forced to check it...ever! If I knew I'd never be forced to check it, it would be my choice hands down. The Kloss is around the same price point (but with the case and accessories it's a bit more) and has the detachable neck, but as you've pointed out, it's got the smallest body with the thinnest sound and I really prefer a carbon neck to the wood for the sake of strength and stability in wildly varying temp and humidity change situations... I absolutely LOVE the OF660 sound, super easy neck attachment mechanism, playability/comfort, and the case, but the price...ouch! Unlike some folks who own multiple guitars, this will be my one and only as it will just be a hobby for me and I really can't justify spending that much...can I? If it had the same effects features as the Lava I think it would push me over the top and I'd go for it, but it's just a LOT of money. Do you know if there any ultra small (portable) gadgets that could give me those same amazing effects on the OF660?
There's a device called a Tonewood amp which adds effects to any acoustic guitar. It's a pretty cool system, you could youtube it and have a look! Yeh i'd definitely suggest having a look to see where to closest local dealers are to have a look in person! Let me know how you go
@@GuitarZero2Hero Hmmm, that's an additional $220... Well, I'll get started finding out where I can find these three so I can see and play them myself and go from there. If I do decide on the OF660 it's gonna be a good while before I can afford to buy it, but I'll definitely let you know what I end up with. Thanks again for all your valuable feedback. Very helpful!
GuitarZero2Hero Thank you for this! Now that Klōs offers full carbon versions of their instruments, I also find myself trying to decide between Klōs and Journey which are now comparably priced. Depending on the video, I’ve heard the sound of the Klōs travel guitar range from reasonably balanced given it’s size to a bit too bright and trebly for my taste. The Journey seems to consistently sound more warm and balanced in the videos I’ve seen. Being from the U.S., Klōs holds this odd emotional appeal for me being a made in the U.S. product. Tough decision to make... In your opinion, does one seem to be a better value for the money? Thank you again for taking the time to provide your perspective!
Hey Glen, thanks! Yeh it's a very comfy guitar to play. Scale length is 24.5 inches so in terms of tension it's a bit less than a full size dreadnaught. Which means it's slightly easier to bend strings etc. The action is adjustable by filing the bone saddle although i don't think it's necessary
Hello, sorry i don't speak English, but a have a question on this Journeys guitar "OF660". So can i speak in French language and can i have a French answer? Thank you for an answer
Based on this great review and others I bought one - The action came super high so saddle sanding is required - Also curious about what strings you have on it - it came with Elixer 12s, but the sound on the video seems lighter like extra light. Once setup the sound is amazing.
Thank you! When I play tutorials I have to restrict myself from playing naturally cause I'm trying to make it consistent and easy to follow along with! :)

Hahaha thanks Marty! I am actually working on it - just want to make sure it's the best it can be so I'm taking my time on it :) Will let you know when it's up :)
