    It's not just the roof. The interior was exposed to 8-12 inches of rain overnight. All the electronics (scoreboard, jumbotron, digital marquee signs, sound system, stadium and accent lighting) were also likely heavily damaged or outright destroyed since, this being a domed stadium, was likely never rated to be put in an outdoor environment. Also, that rainwater had to go SOMEWHERE. The lowest point is likely the dugouts which lead right into the locker rooms. So the sublevels of the stadium were likely flooded. This is going to cost WAY more than JUST the roof being replaced.

    • @Kira_Kovalyova

      A lot of the equipment would have had some degree of IP water resistance rating, but probably not to this extent I agree.

    • @pierrelevasseur2701
      @pierrelevasseur2701 3 місяці тому +1

      I had not considered that until I just read your comment. I thought Brodie was way off with his $200+ million estimate. I don't know if he was considering just the roof. But now, I'm thinking, his assessment might be too low. Fixes will basically be rebuilding a new stadium as many things are going to have to be replaced just because of the water damage. Of course, they could forget about replacing the roof, convert it to an outdoor venue, but still an expensive undertaking.
      Whatever the cost, I don't see any way the Rays are playing there in 2025. There's just 5 months until next season. They may be rethinking new stadium plans. But first, find a new place to play next season. Their spring training facility in Port Charlotte? It has only 7700 seats. Is there a better, bigger one in Orlando? I don't believe so. Could they share the Marlins' stadium? I've heard already them moving to Montreal, at least for a few years, but I doubt that's going to happen.

    • @Starfire099
      @Starfire099 3 місяці тому

      @@Kira_Kovalyova You may be right, but the Rays owner is notoriously cheap. If he could get away with getting a cheaper, non-waterproofed version of something, he likely did.

      @@pierrelevasseur2701 MLB will likely use this as an excuse to try out the Rays in a new market, just as a test. That way they can save face. They can do this without facing any backlash from the people who want to keep them in TB. Miami can't do much better in attendance than the Rays, so it won't be there. It won't be in Central Florida if it's not someplace with a dome (or a roof at least). MLB would experience far too many rainouts with the almost daily afternoon/evening thunderstorms we get here. No, if the Rays have to play someplace else next season, it won't be in central Florida.
      The $200+ million figure may be accurate for the roof only if it's to be ready before next season. You pay a premium for a contractor to drop everything and take your job. Plus you have to pay to have a company produce all the roof material and do it quickly.
      I think the hurricane might have just sealed the Rays fate in the Tampa Bay area. My guess is that there's a clause that will allow them to break the lease if the Trop isn't ready for next season. I don't even think ground has been broken on the new stadium in St. Pete yet. So they might be able to pull out of the deal despite it being "finalized". A new stadium in the current location only solved the least of the Rays issues. A new stadium in that location isn't going to solve the attendance issues because the age of the stadium was only a minor issue in the grand scheme of things. The attendance issue is because of two issues. Location and bad ownership. St. Pete is one of the WORST locations in the Bay Area for a stadium. Minimal major routes in and out. It's out on a small peninsula when the majority of the fanbase is outside that peninsula and spread out. The two best sites for a new stadium would have been downtown Tampa (aka Ybor City site) or near the state fairgrounds (two major interstates nearby, I-4 for east/west and I-75 for north/south). The reason the current location was chosen was the other major problem the Rays suffer from. Bad, cheap owners. Those sites would require more investment up-front due to buying all the land, so it costs more.
      Ownership is why nobody can get excited about the Rays. The Rays will never have a player like Stamkos with the Lightning or multiple players on the Bucs who played the vast majority of an almost 2 decade long career here. We all know that once one of our good home-grown players hits their arbitration years, they are gonna be shipped off. The Rays management (minus ownership) have done an incredible job with what they've had to work with. But without a truly invested owner with deep pockets, the best the Rays will ever do is what they've done. An occasional world series appearance once every 12-15 years and several early playoff exits. They'll never be good enough to pull off a WS victory because they can't bring in top name talent with an owner who won't pay for it. Another part is the lack of a salary cap in baseball. The salary cap is the ultimate equalizer. Where everyone has to play by the same rules regardless of pocket depth. You give the Rays management the Yankees deep pockets and they'd build a dynasty.
      Like I said, the Rays staff is excellent and does miracles with what they have, but it's hard to get excited about players when you know they will be gone sooner rather than later.

    • @pierrelevasseur2701
      @pierrelevasseur2701 3 місяці тому

      @@Starfire099 I've thought the same thing. Maybe have the Rays play in Mexico City next year, see if there's interest and thus potential to expand there. But again, I think it's kind of late for the logistics, Mexico has a team, don't they, so fitting the Rays schedule in there may not work out. Montreal seems better, I don't think Olympic Stadium is used that much. It would be a way for MLB to say, come see this team all season and if you're not interested, you won't get an expansion team and we won't allow a team to move there. If they use Oakland, the smarter option since there's a MLB-ready stadium already, it won't prove a thing, there are fans there, but will they go see this team, likely to stay a year or two, that is not the Athletics? I don't think so. You need to go where fans are starved for baseball and likely where a team could be in the future, so a minor league city is out of the question, unless it's one of those few cities mentioned as expansion possibilities but I don't think any have a decent stadium, other than a minor league one.
      I just thought of another city, actually a couple, with a big stadium, not sure if those facilities would be available. Vancouver for one, which also could be a test like Montreal as said above. The Astrodome in Houston, it's still there, right? I don't know what could be available in Florida, I mean a 30K+ stadium. I guess they could use some football stadium. I don't see needing a covered stadium. The Marlins' park is open. I know it's not central Florida but surely the weather is not all that different than Tampa.
      I don't see Tropicana Field, even pouring lots of money into it for five months, it being ready for late March. We don't even know yet the full extent of the damage. The structure holding the roof may be damaged that it would have to be replaced, making the repairs take longer. It will likely take a month before they assess that and plan how to fix. No, I'm convinced the Rays are not opening there on March 27.
      >> I think the hurricane might have just sealed the Rays fate in the Tampa Bay area.
      I think you're right. I've also wondered why have a new stadium in the same place, how is that going to help attendance if people don't like going there due to traffic?
      The players will never accept a salary cap.

    This is also reminiscent of the wind damage done to BC Place Stadium around February of 2009, which forced the BC Lions and Vancouver White Caps to play in a temporarily rebuilt Empire Stadium for a season. In that case, the roof was near the end of it's useful life, just like it sounds like was the case with Tropicana Stadium, and maybe the roof's material had weakened to the point it could no longer withstand as strong of winds as it was originally designed to, just like with BC Place.
    In the case of BC Place, the roof did get a temporary repair in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony, and after the Olympics, they tore off the old roof and replaced it with the beautiful new retractable roof it's had since. Giving the old stadium a new lease on life.

The roof before it collapsed in 2010 was beyond its useful life which may be part of the reason. 2nd when they repaired it, it was a partial roof replacement. Just the “middle section” if you googled pictures of the metrodome you’ll know immediately what I mean. One side effect of the half new roof was letting a lot more natural light in. Hi Brodie. Great video. You're looking at at least a 300 million dollar fix here. If the roof was torn off due to the high winds, the roof is just the start of what will need to be replaced. You mentioned water damage and that will be the worst part of this repair because of all of the stadium components that have always been inside and out of the weather. When inspectors finish their reports, they may well suggest that the Rays find a new home for their next season and get their new stadium construction going sooner, as the cost to get the current one fixed will be prohibitive. It saddens me that this has happened because it affects so many other people there in the area whose livelihoods depend on the income derived from working at the Trop. My prayers go out to everyone in Florida, especially the families that were directly affected by these awful storms. I would wholeheartedly encourage anyone reading this to consider donating to any fund you feel worthy in order to help the people of Florida who have been hit hard by this.

    My understanding is that Milton landfalled as a high CAT 3. Basically, the worst-case scenario from those who forecasted this impact. At that level you need a miliary grade structure to withstand that. The only reason the death toll is so much less than expected is because people knew to get the heck out of dodge. I've heard unverified sources say that around 95% of people left in anticipation of Milton.

    I was just at a Rays game at the Trop back in August. The place is totally outdated but it has some charm to it. Yeah they do have a lot of amenities that are up to date. The concourses is vary narrow (similar to Angel Stadium in Anaheim). Watching a ballgame there was surreal as it has an old house type of vibe. The well being of the people of the Tampa/St Pete/Clearwater/Sarasota area is the most important thing.
    I do agree it could be possible it looks worse than it is, but there are many issues which may prevent it from being used in 2025 or at least part of the season.
    - The cables need to be examined for damage
    - The field does not have a drainage system and was not built for water intrusion.
    - How long to get engineers in there to look over the whole building? Contractors and engineers are needed for many other important functions as part of the rebuilding of the area.
    - The roof is customized. They would need to find a company who has the capability of manufacturing the pieces to fix the roof. They may have to retooled to do it.
    - If the Rays have to play at a temporary site, is it smarter to just demolish the dome and just build the new park? I say that because if costs are $200-$300 mil, is that money well spent for a facility going to be used for maybe another 2 or 3 seasons when it is finally repaired?
    Again, the people who are suffering come 1st. The Rays and MLB will figure it out, but I can see the Rays playing in a minor league park in Florida for at least most of the 2025 season.

    Former (life) insurance employee. A building like a stadium most surely has to be insured, and the insurers will likely get help paying for the claim via a "reinsurance" company (which assists insurers in paying claims during big events like hurricanes, via pricey reinsurance policies). Insurers could also require that the new Rays stadium's roof be more solid like, say, Houston or Milwaukee's baseball stadiums instead of the fabric the Trop used.
    As for a temporary stadium, Omaha's could fill in. It seats more than 10,000 and looks like a version of Kansas City's park with a much smaller upper deck.

This is unfortunate, but not a surprise. And it is good for Brodie to re-emphasize that there are far greater priorities than baseball out there needing the public's financial focus right now...

    54,000 for an A's playoff game in 2019.
    19,000 for Rays playoff game in 2023.
    Rays ownership could possibly see Oakland and Howard Terminal as an option since Tropicana Field has been damaged? Tampa has approval for a new ballpark, possibly they could be seen as a new expansion possibility, while Oakland could replace the A's with an established team that can use the Coliseum while HT is approved? This could be a situation where the Rays owner, Steve Sternberg, net worth $800 million could be convinced to sell his franchise to a wealthy Bay Area individual, say...Joe Lacob, net worth $3 Billion, in exchange for MLB granting him a new Tampa expansion team to go with that approved ballpark? Oakland officials and business leaders should talk with Lacob, as well as the Haas Family and Levi-Strauss about putting an exploratory group together to see about first getting the Rays here since their existing ballpark is damaged. Then, sell Stetnberg on why Oakland IS a Major League city. Perhaps Sternberg could sell a controlling interest in the Rays to Lacob and retain a minority ownership position. Maybe the New York born Sternberg and the Massachusetts born Lacob can put their Red Sox/Yankees history aside and make Oakland baseball whole again? Just imagine the couch surfing Fisher languishing in Minor League Sacramento, while the Oakland based Rays draw huge crowds in the Coliseum while Lacob completes the reimagined HT Ballpark Fisher ran from. And on the meantime, Vegas continues to fall apart. Maybe, if you believe in such things, the hurricane damage in Florida could be the Act of God baseball fan's in the East Bay were praying for.

    What does it mean for 2025 with the Rays-will the Rays have to play on the road all year long?

      If Tropicana is unusable, they likely would play their "home" games somewhere else. One of the closer alternatives would be just outside of Orlando at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World. Capacity is only 7,500, but I'm sure there are ways to increase it. The Rays could also look into doing a series say, at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
      Jacksonville may also be on the table as the Jumbo Shrimp have one of the larger parks in AAA.

    Why replace the roof look into adding drainage a grass or better artificial turf field and adjust lighting and sound system and have it be open air for the remaining years. It could peak fan interest. To those who were in the path of Milton I hope you’re safe.

    If Tropicana Field is ultimately deemed a total loss...
    1) Both the Rays and Athletics should suspend operations while their respective new ballparks are built. I believe that MLB doesn't want its own version of the NHL's Mullett Arena situation, playing Major League games in Minor League parks long term.
    2) While the Rays and A's are on hiatus, MLB should open the expansion process, so that if/when the Rays' and A's parks open in 2028, expansion can follow within 5 years.
    3) Since the AL would only have 13 teams if the Rays and A's go on hiatus, an NL team would temporarily move the AL, bringing both leagues to 14 teams each.
    4) Temporarily realign the AL and NL to two divisions per league, seven teams per division.
    4a) AL East: BOS, NYY, BAL, TOR, CLE, DET, CWS. AL West: MIN, KC, TEX, HOU, ARI, LAA, SEA.
    4b) NL East: NYM, PHI, PIT, WSH, ATL, MIA, CIN. NL West: CHC, MIL, STL, COL, SD, LAD, SF.
    5) Revise the playoff format slightly, doing it similar to the NHL's format. The division winners still get their bye to the Division Series, while the division runner-ups host the Wild Card Series against the next two teams with the best record.

      I was thinking this too made a comment on Depressed Ginger's video about it. They should just deactivate both teams, give them the chance to come back if they actually build a new stadium. You could even do more switching around for better regional continuity, switch seattle anaheim and arizona to nl west, and switch CHC, MIL, STL to AL West. It would be a temporary thing until the league reexpands to 30 and/or 32. So that the NL West becomes the defacto Pacific Division and travel times are easier for division rivals. If neither team ends up following through on their new stadium, MLB could expand to Raleigh, Nashville, Salt Lake City and Portland from 28 to 32.

      Just do the 2001 Contraction but for the A's and the Rays, and actually follow through on it

      Why not have the Rays play in Atlanta at old Turner Field (which is still being used as a college football stadium), and is just down the road from Tampa on Interstate 75. That way they get a proper, MLB calibre stadium while the new one is built.

      I think the MLB players Union would not sign off on that, as they would lose 2 rosters full of player salaries....UNLESS the MLB agrees to expand the roster size proportionately.
