I learned how to grow ginger years ago back when I lived in Florida. Now I know how to grow ginger in cold climates, in the tropics, and right here in Lower Alabama! - Навчання та стиль
Confirming from zone 6a that you can absolutely grow ginger. As a gardening experiment, I bought 2 rhizomes, about the size/shape of a small hand, from an organic grocery store last January. I put them, barely covered w soil, in shallow pots and placed the pots on a window sill, and cared for them as you would any house-plant. They took about 2 months to start sprouting, but grew like gang busters after that. I transplanted them to the outside garden in mid-June, a couple weeks after our last frost date here in northern Massachusetts, and they thrived with absolutely no special care (like DTG said) for the entire summer/fall. Each of the rhizomes easily doubled in size by the time I harvested them in early October. Probably my favorite and tastiest gardening experiment ever. Northern gardeners, you have to try this!!!

Did you bring them inside to overwinter? Or did you leave them outside covered?
@@marielefebvre5891 I harvested all of it, and pickled it sushi style. Delish.. It wouldn't survive outside here, even heavily mulched. The ground freezes 10" deep in this area. Just gives me an excuse to repeat the experiment next year :).. You could totally bring ginger planted in pots into the house for the winter (like DTG said). Happy holidays, and green thumbs to you!

@@donteatthefoxgloves377 I lived in Mukilteo, WA until last year and ginger will thrive in the PNW.. I still had to bring it indoors for the winter tho.. our cats were fond of the ginger leaves, so beware :)

I knew it. I was waiting for it but it was at the very end! Rachel uses the leaves for tea also! Is there anything RTG doesn’t do with flying colors? David’s approach to gardening is decidedly low-key but RTG sets a standard way too high for me! But I still want to be her when I grow up. 🌿❤️🌿

Hearing from Scott Head, knowing he's in the South as you are David, there are so many plants that keep growin' good, just like ya say, considering there aren't any hard frosts in the area to kill 'em. Ginger, such a spicy and tasty root/tuber and now thanks to you I now know that the leaves also make a great tea!
Nice video. I noticed that you fed the leaves/stems to the goats and while that’s cool too, you can cook with those. It goes well with any stir fry, etc. Many Asian dishes include ginger “greens”. You can also use it in your tea/tisane, it adds a nice ginger taste. Really tasty.
I did an experiment last year - planted Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb and March. Jan and Feb are the ones that produce.
My Ginger mostly has mostly died back from the winter freeze we had a week or so before Christmas but yes I grow Ginger in zone 8. All mine are organic Ginger from Costco that I planted in the garden instead of eating.

Tip for finding FRESH Ginger and Turmeric: Check your nearest Asian market. Their roots are most likely to be fresh, due to the decent turnover on the product - and things like growth inhibitors and removing buds are less common. That is one SMART lookin' shirt 😁

In zone 5b and currently tricking a store bought ginger to actively grow in a pot in my kitchen on top of a heating mat #pushthezone. Super exciting!

In zone 5b, last year my ginger grew nicely in a pot during the summer and then I forgot to bring in when we had hard freeze and it became mush. Did not make that mistake this year, remembered to bring it in before freeze and I dug around it to check it and it looks nice and healthy.
I grow it here in Vermont. I start it at the end of Jan. early Feb. Toss it in a pot , under the grow lights and plant it out after the first frost. . Easy peasy. I grab a few pieces from the local coop. . Its a really pretty plant . I do toss in a fair amount of chicken poop
I'm in VT too, zone 4b. Do dig the ginger up in the fall? Maybe put it in a pot in your basement?
@@41txdawn Because of the short growing season I usually just start a new ones every year. I could probably save a few pieces of my own to grow up , but I find it just as easy to but a couple of organic pieces from the coop and start new plants. I dehydrate enough for the year and stick some in the freezer .

Gardening is exploring I love getting my seeds and products from the store I'm now growing horseradish root that I got from the food store so happy from Maryland
There are several types of wild ginger hardy to zones five or lower, but you have to mail order them from specialty nurseries and the harvesting process is different. Usually it's just that the rhizomes are much smaller, but sometimes there are toxic parts to avoid or a totally different part of the plant gets eaten.

I love Ginger, I buy mine from Aldi's most the time, eat some grow some more. I am just now learning much about how to grow it. This past year was my first time growing ginger, it grow but not fabulously. They are now in my laundry room with the rest of the bucket garden. 😆 I still have tomatoes & peppers GROWING. They not real big and beautiful, but THEY are beautiful...
I would LOVE to have some Turmeric to grow, I used tried ground turmeric almost every day to help with pain.

I bought some ginger in a container at the store. It rotted in the pot and I found out it was radiated. So now I go to the health food store.
I struggle with ginger in zone 6. It lives, but doesn't do much. No problems with Turmeric, Galangal ginger and false cardamom. Turmeric blooms really well up here and never fails to split my pots.

In south FL, I have ginger growing under pine needles in my guerilla garden in the woods, and more ginger growing in poor, gravely soil about 200ft from the ocean. It seems to enjoy any place that isn't in the blistering direct sun
Basically, anywhere banana trees will grow, ginger does well right beside them

I tried to grow some from a beautiful root from the grocery store - thankfully in a pot.
7-8 inches long... it had 7-10 nodes on it... firm, no wrinkles.
I put it in moist soil after soaking it overnight (as per another channel).
A week later I checked on it. The skin was empty.. it had drained.
I put the dirt in the fire.
They do badly with extra water.
David this is super helpful. What about feeding in a container?
I have found great ginger roots can be found at good prices from asian supermarkets.
Thank you! I’ve been wanting to learn more about growing ginger. I have two plants started in pots inside the house- zone 4. One has sprouted a stem. I saw a green area on the other, but no sprout; I’m wondering if it is dormant. We’ll see.
Is it winter where you are yeah? That would be why it’s possibly still dormant or too cold? I am going to try and grow some in pots in the house now too until it’s mid spring them take them outside where no frost can get it. I live in a cool temperate zone so will see how I go. I failed when I planted them in ground in winter time lol I had spare ginger at home and thought I would plant it and see if it comes up in summer but it hasn’t yet and I’m mid summer so I don’t think it’s alive anymore
I was just out weeding around a turmeric bed getting ready to harvest. I need to re-plant some ginger and horseradish, oh and sun-chokes too, lol. I only had mediocre success with ginger the last time I tried growing it here in zone 9bee. I think that's because I picked the wrong spot under an oak which probably had too much shade. Eager to try replanting again now after watching your video!! LOL. Think happy. Bee happy 🐝🐝🐝✌️

@@marianaespinosa3890 Yup. I think it's important to know "how many hours" of direct sunlight per day an area receives. I sorta ignored that variable when I planted ginger. I think certain crops can grow great, but types of crops may struggle. It's all trial and error. Hope you have great success! I love following David's advise. He really knows his stuff!!

Is there any point in trying to grow it in-ground in a zone 8b climate where the cold season is extremely wet and the warm season is bone-dry?
In the PNW it rains constantly for 8 months with barely a freeze. Would that rot it in dormancy?
what about soil acidity or alkalinity? shade moist area or well drained dry? how often to water?
can you do anything with leaves, stalks--other than compost or chicken feed

Suggestions for horseradish root? Purchased a lg piece and have it stored in my refrigerator crisper meanwhile. Seems a little soft. Turned down humidity in crisper. It's been about a month now. Am really hoping to grow in ground! Zone 9a Houston, Tx

I planted shampoo ginger around my house by a paver patio by a gutter downspout from some I found in growing in empty Vacant lots here in Inverness- 8/9 central Florida a few years ago…
Almost a huge mistake… they began pushing up pavers and the clump gets bigger and bigger every year. They do really well under oak trees..love the shade… the sap from the red cone smells great but never tried to eat the roots.
I ate them - they are terrible. Like bitter dirt.
@@davidthegood they smell great and it’s always fun to squeeze and smear around but are worthless as food. They love the Jacksonville area and become almost invasive.
Shampoo ginger? Never heard of it!
Mine is still looking great. It's starting to flower actually. The blooms do look rather unusual though. I split up my turmeric and replanted the pieces already, but still waiting for the ginger to go dormant. Is it best to split it into more plants or just let them do their thing from year to year without splitting them up?
You'll get more net roots if you split them up.

I planted some in ground in my cold temperate climate here in Australia and it’s summer now and I haven’t seen it pop up yet. I think it may have died due to too much rain in winter possibly 🤔
Will try to grow some again in a pot now the weather is warmer but even then I prob left it too late again.

I think my grocery store ginger has been irradiated as it has the buds, but they never grow. Our store's organic section doesn't have ginger. Alas.
I used to juice it all the time highly medicinal now im thinking thats the reason it never grew not good pieces and i never planted them in winter

I've tried to grow ginger so many times it's ridiculous. I'm in Texas 8b. I musta spent $100 on roots from the grocery. They very rarely sprout for me, and when they do, I get one or two leaves, and then it dried up and withers away. If I water it more, the root rots. If I water it less, it dries up faster. I just can't win with ginger and I don't know why. Same problem with turmeric. My soil was 7.8 pH (before I started my garden), so maybe it likes acidic soil. That's all I can think of.

PS: I get organic ginger from BJ"s...it is very good looking and grows nicely...But BJ"s is not a grocery store.
