    G'Day Folks. Harvested the 2 ginger plants I've been doing a growing trial with over the past 8+ months.
    I was seeing if planting a small seed piece would affect the overall yield of the plant & think I got my answer. 😉👍
    Have included a bit of a quick ginger growing guide for folks that are looking at growing it for the first time.
    You can find a more in depth Ginger Growing Guide that covers cool climate & container growing here ► bit.ly/HowToGr...
    You can also find our Turmeric & Ginger Growing & Processing playlist here ► bit.ly/GingerT...
    Hope you enjoyed the clip & your gardens are booming.

    I grew a piece of ginger in a pot over summer in central Victoria and the stem grew to over a metre tall. I fed it weekly with fresh worm farm leachate and have yet to harvest it, as it is currently growing frost free in the greenhouse. I think harvesting anything bigger than your original piece you planted is a bonus :)

      Nice one Jane. Most of this seasons have started to die off here. That cold blast from the south didn't help much. 😉
      Hope you get a nice harvest from the plant.

    Great pointers Rob. I've got a few smaller rhizomes of ginger growing in containers - first for me. I'm excited to see how they come out and I guess since it's about halfway through they could use a bit of a feed. Thanks again for sharing.

      Nice one Denise. I would pop it in a spot inside that gets the warm morning sun. I'd also try not to over water it. Only add water if just under the surface of the soil looks to be drying out a bit.

    Thanks for the video. I'm in Florida. So, should grow well, but I'm just starting and would love to know what you suggest for soil while growing in pots. I'm currently using a bagged mix of potting soil and compost. Would you use that? Or add something to it? Or use something else entirely? Thanks!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  4 роки тому

      I'd probably add in a bit of extra compost to the potting mix. Can't hurt to give it a top feed once you see a few new stalks appear either.

    Good looking ginger there Rob ! I am wondering what to do with my ginger , it is raining and completely over cast since many days which will continue for another 2 months , may be occasional sun .The leaves have either turned yellow or got battered in the rains and winds. The pot has been getting just about an hour or so of sun , so the growth has been slow since I sowed the ginger in December 2016.

      Hi MBG & sorry for missing your post. I missed almost all from this clip for some reason. 😕
      Did the ginger pull through or did you loose it in the end? I have seen some ginger die off due to too much water so I think that might be the issue you had. They like to have a fair amount of air around their roots & do best in free draining soil.
      Sorry again for missing this. BTW, not sure if you've had this issue but I'm no longer getting email notifications from any channels I've subscribed too. Are you having the same issue? Has been going on for a while now & is a real pain as I rely on my email account to keep all notifications in some spot.
      All my best to you & the family,

    You are fabulous. I'm in Toronto, and watching for your tips for growing in our climate. We can reach 40 degrees in July but have a short growing season. Oh, I always have to remind myself my winter is your summer. Ginger is considered tropical and don't know how it would handle Toronto weather. It is March 23 and we had snow yesterday. Usually can't plant until 24th of May...so maybe 4 to 5 months outdoors. I am on a hunt for recipes for doing the pickled pink ginger which people often call sushi ginger.

    Can you please tell me if you can pack ginger planting material by vacuum packaging for long distance transportation? Can they be used later as planting material?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 роки тому

      I'm not really sure to tell you the truth. If they're being imported to your country they may be treated which might stop them from sprouting. Best way to check is to plant some out & see how you go I'd say.
      Hope you get some to sprout. 👍🌱🌱

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 роки тому

      Hi there again. I misread this question when I answered before, sorry about that.
      If it's ginger that you know will sprout, I don't think vacuum sealing it for transport would cause it not to sprout once it arrived at it's destination.
      I do know that some countries will irradiate food that's being imported & that may be an issue with it if that's the case.
      Hope that helps some.

      The mother rhizome can be used to start another crop next season Brian but I find that a few don't make it & rot in the ground over winter.
      The fresh rhizome will grow a lot faster than the mother so I tend to process most of the mothers. They can be a bit stringy so I like to dehydrate them & turn them into powder but can be minced & frozen as well.

      I like to harvest them once the foliage starts to die back. You can leave them go until it dies back completely as well if you like.
      You could also break off small sections as it's growing if it looks like there's a lot of rhizome growth. I wouldn't take too much though as it can reduce the final yield a fair bit.

    Hi Rob, do you harvest giant ginger after it flowers? I've grown ginger for the for the first time this year and the plants are sending up flowers ATM. I got the rhizome from a reputable online plant shop in SEQ so in sure I've not inadvertently picked up an ornamental. Nobody seems to mention the flowering part of the growth cycle. To my untrained eye the plants seem to be starting the transition to 'young' old ginger, which seems to be the second of three harvests for farmers. The plants are about 6 months' past sowing in Brisbane. Cheers!

      Hi Andrew. I'm filming a ginger update today as it happens. 😉
      They do set flowers but they're not very spectacular like the turmeric. I like to harvest when the plants start to die back & quite often wait for all the foliage to wilt first.
      For us out here at Ipswich the plant will generally hold on until about July/August but have had some last out until September in a warmish spot.
      Hope that helps some mate.

    Hi Rob. I read the question below about a second harvest from the mother. YOu said you've left them in the soil before and they produced a bit. We have ours on the counter after our final harvest two weeks ago. ARe we able to take those mothers and put them in water over winter and plant in spring or is it possible to plant in our greenhouse. If so, do we cut or leave them as is or is it too late?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 роки тому

      Hi Bonnie. I would just pop them straight into the soil now if the greenhouse is warm enough. Leaving them in water may cause them to rot.
      I would be carful not to over water them once planted as well as they may rot if the temperature isn't quite warm enough. I like to increase watering once I see the shoots above the soil line.
      Sorry it took a while to get back to you.

      Hey Linda. I have been told by some that their plants will grow all year round up there. It might pay to dig around & harvest older looking pieces of the rhizome if it's still actively growing. Probably best not to take too much if it's a young plant though.

      You certainly can eat it Dafin. It can also be used to start another crop next season but I find that a few don't make it & rot in the ground over winter.
      The fresh rhizome will grow a lot faster than the mother so I tend to process most of the mothers. They can be a bit stringy so I like to dehydrate them & turn them into powder but can be minced & frozen as well.

    Also, I've planted my ginger in a tropical garden as an ornamental. Do I have to uproot the whole thing for the roots to keep well, or can I just pick out the odd bits occasionally as I need them in the kitchen. Thanks for the awesome channel :)

      Hi Melanie. I have left some of the seed ginger in the soil here & it re shot from different nodes. 👍
      I left all our turmeric & gingers in the soil last season so we could harvest small sections as we need them. They may need a little bit of thinning depending on the space you have available but that's no huge drama. It's always handy to keep the tinned out sections on hand in the freezer or dried for use in meals. 👍👍
