Your pretty much my "go to" need garden information Nate. Like to add this information for growing ginger. Take a quart zip lock bag place your ginger in it with a moist paper towel covering the ginger, on the other half of moist towel place sliced up parts of onions, reseal the bag about halfway so there's some air leave in a dark warm place and in about 4 to10 days (you monitor} the ginger root shoots come flying out the the sides of the ginger eye, that's when I would place them in the set up you have,
At last, a realistic and clearly experienced way to grow ginger in a genuine cold climate! So many videos showing people with greenhouses full of enormous plants showing huge roots and you find at the end they are in a sub tropical climate. Thanks for your tips which cover all the main concerns like when to start it off, temperature and transplanting and feeding. I have only grown once successfully in my 77 years and I now know I have been starting it off far too late. Thanks for a great video. This year will definitely be the one in which we succeed here in northern France! :)
Hi. You are so RIGHT. I have done exactly what you say and started a whole tuber or corm off in a shallow dish covered in compost, and put into a heated propagator. I gave it a little moisture to keep it ok and it put up several healthy shoots several weeks ago. The largest are now growing out of the propagator so I have potted it into a large pot with some good compost and now have put it onto a heated mat in the polytunnel. I have never got one started this early before and I am looking forward to potting it on or even putting into the greenhouse bed once we are into hot weather. Thanks again for your excellent advice. @@gardenlikeaviking
Another fantastic instructional video Nate! I have to say I was hoping you would experiment w/a couple of pieces that were dipped in wood ash after cutting the pieces, then planting them immediately to see if they would flourish (from the ash dip like they do w/potatoes) or just rot from not being dried out first. That's OK. I will do that experiment myself and let you know although it might not be until next year. Cheers my friend! ThanQ for all you do for us!
thank you and yes I am experimenting with that but I don't like to put things in the videos if I'm not absolutely certain about them so if it proves effective then next year is when I'll recommend it... but def let me know how yours goes too!!
@@gardenlikeaviking I'm glad to know you are trying it this year. I am willing to wait until the end of the season to hear how it went and next year to see what your recommendations are after the experiment. ❤
Oh my goodness funny you are doing this. I bought ginger from the store whole and stuck then whole thing flat in along with my house plant and it is now 12” tall. It took a long while for it to start but when it starts to grow look out I swear I can see it growing! It is fast growing! I have not done a darn thing to it and it’s doing great. I even water from the top. I pretty much did all the wrong things and it worked. It was just an experiment. Mine was not organic. I’ll do better next time but so happy with my little experiment. How do you know when to pull it? Just after the stem dies like a garlic? Do you need to let it dry before storing or using?
I'll be interested to see the results of your harvest!... the ginger will just keep growing and growing so far I don't think it dies back on its own like garlic... you can prune off the leaves as needed for tea and ginger flavor the leaves and stems have a strong ginger flavor
Great video! Have you considered making a video on incorporating annual or perennial mushrooms into your garden? Watched your video on the oyster mushrooms.
Same. Doing a bed of wine caps and an Almond Agaricus Bed as far away as possible. I live in Zone 9b so humidity is not an issue. The heat is so I’m testing the waters to see what works.
i know exactly what you are talking about LOL. it took about 2 months for my avacodo to actually sprout from the ground. i planted the seed in early june of last year. so yeah; about august i saw it poke out of the ground. yeah; sometimes it takes a while for something to grow
Great! I am in Southern Indiana. But I started late this year. I started in March and put it in the raised bed in May with little sprouts, but I still haven't seen the leaves.
Love your videos and great success with my ginger. I have tons of little pieces/plants and saved some with nice root systems. Think if I pot those up after cutting the tops and just bring in the house Zone 4, I can replant in the greenhouse come spring?
Nate, do you cure your ginger after harvesting it? My plant is growing fabulously and I won't harvest until October/November or when the leaves start to change color, but I wasn't sure if I should cure it, or just start using it, canning, pickling etc... immediately. Thanks!
I love your videos and advice on gardening! I am curious as to how you store all your ginger in your home after you harvest it? Do you store it in a dry cool place, the same as potatoes? Thank you!
Great video! I put some in compost sand mix about a week ago. Wasn't sure on heat so thanks for the info. Putting by the wood stove cover on keep moisture in. Did I hear you are a Hoosier also?. Thanks again.
I've had it stay fresh for a couple months at most... I've heard of people being able to make it last all winter so I'm going to try a few different techniques this year to see... I ferment most of it for eating all winter long
@@gardenlikeaviking yeah I would definitely like to ferment ginger or make a ginger bug for ginger beer and homemade root beer with sassafras root. Those two beverages along with kombucha is the reason why I want to grow in the first place. Do you think this applies to black ginger and shampooed ginger?
I think you usually get frost in January right?... then start it 8 weeks before the last frost date to set out a few weeks after the last frost.... also you could just grow it in big containers and bring it inside for the couple months where its cold... ginger loves to just keep growing and growing
you can place it inside compost. You put it in a cardboard box and place that box into post then turn the pile. You just pull that cardboard out. /grow bag in compost pile.
Great info Nate. Thank you. This would be my first time with ginger. One of your older videos shows how you put rain water in a barrel with peppers etc. waste from our garden, kitchen scraps. Fertilizer. Here is a thought since this is new to my garden How about me using rain water and ginger in my Ninja, dilute that 10 Xs and mix it with prepped soil we made in the fall?
Thank you very much for this video! It helps and it is very clear. My question is : what do you do with the plant in winter? Or do you have to start again? A good weekend for you
some people bring them in over the winter but I don't have the room for all of that so I just plant fresh each spring and harvest completely in the fall
Great, thanks so much, Nate - I've been looking forward to this one for ages! I've also read that soaking the ginger for a few hours prior to planting helps - have you tried that?
I would recommend against that because in my experience Ginger is sort of delicate and if things are too moist it just wants to rot... thats why we only bottom water once we see the soil physically a bit dry... you could try it though and see what works better and be sure to let me know if you do!
Thanks for this video! I’ve often thought about growing ginger here in zone 7b. So is the baby ginger not the same variety as the organic grocery store kind? Or are you calling it baby ginger because you have a shorter growing season? Love your channel!
we just don't have the capability here to grow it to its fullest market size... its the same strain just much more tender and does not have the thick skin like they get in the tropics
If you live in a cold climate .. I live in zone 7a .. you can dig your ginger at the end of the year .. clean and store it over winter .. then replant it in the spring. The part that you replant is considered the "Mother" .. and the new roots are the "Babies". At the end of the second growing season .. dig your roots again and the Mother will look more like what you get in the store .. darker and more concentrated meat. The babies are good too .. fresh and tender .. and if you dig before the first frost .. the stalks can be dried out and ground into powder .. or used fresh. 🙂
@@MerwinARTist how are you storing it?... with roots and shoots?... I have yet to have it last beyond a couple months after harvest... I have heard of people uprooting it and repotting it inside for the winter... is that what you mean?
Does the parent rhizome disappear? You do a very good job of showing the entire process. I may not grow ginger but I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you!
Can you please provide a link to the water sprayer you use in the videos? If you cut out a small corner of the top tray you won't have to lift the top tray ;) great video thank you
What would happen, If you take some ginger you have harvested and put it in small pots with some potting soil and let it hibernate indoor but no heat lamp. once they stay dormant in winter indoor you replant them to have bigger crop in subsequent spring season ?
I'm clearly late to plant ginger, but can I start it now to get the plant set up, overeinter it inside and start rhizome production next year from the spring?
yes you can start it now and if you use a heat mat you'll be able to germinate it fast enough to still get a decent harvest come sept and then you can also move it inside and overwinter for next year
Ok my friends. Here is it.

@@gardenlikeaviking yeah I did wonder about that but did soak them for a couple hours... I will soon find out if it was a mistake!
here to learn what i don't know
Your growing it on your face bro 😂
Thanks for this video! I’ve often thought about growing ginger here in zone 7b. So is the baby ginger not the same variety as the organic grocery store kind? Or are you calling it baby ginger because you have a shorter growing season? Love your channel!
we just don't have the capability here to grow it to its fullest market size... its the same strain just much more tender and does not have the thick skin like they get in the tropics
@@gardenlikeaviking awesome. Thanks for the clarification. I’m definitely going to try growing ginger!
@@MerwinARTist so the green stalks can be used /will taste like powdered ginger then?
@@MerwinARTist how are you storing it?... with roots and shoots?... I have yet to have it last beyond a couple months after harvest... I have heard of people uprooting it and repotting it inside for the winter... is that what you mean?
What do you do with the ginger after harvest to make it keep longer? How do you 'cure it'?
Does the parent rhizome disappear? You do a very good job of showing the entire process. I may not grow ginger but I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you!
I'm not sure if it does or not but I can't recognize any of it come harvest time so I think it dissolves
Do you have a link to the 2-tray bottom watering system?
How much ginger can you expect to grown from a tray worth of starts like you show here? I’m up on Vancouver Island zone 7b.
I've been getting about a 5x return
Hi Nate! I'm wondering what kind of soil you use for your seedlings? Do you make your own soil? Can I use organic soil from a big box store?
hello my friend I have a video coming out today on that topic
Apparently, the leaves taste like lemon grass and ginger. The leaves and stalks go well in soups, also i guess.
Can you please provide a link to the water sprayer you use in the videos? If you cut out a small corner of the top tray you won't have to lift the top tray ;) great video thank you
that exact one is no longer in production but if I were to get another one it would be this one amzn.to/3kxCvBI
My friend is there a particular name or do you have a link for those seedlings racks in your grow tent? Thanks
My Wise Gardener friend when will we be able to purchase your video library for reference if, and most likely when the grid goes down........
that is a great idea!!!.. do you mean like a downloadable file with all the videos? or a dvd collection? or what?
What would happen, If you take some ginger you have harvested and put it in small pots with some potting soil and let it hibernate indoor but no heat lamp. once they stay dormant in winter indoor you replant them to have bigger crop in subsequent spring season ?
Nate have another question I got some organic turmeric today. Should it be planted just like the ginger?
yes treat the same as ginger
What about storing baby ginger?
I grew ginger in a similar way a few years ago. It grew, but the yield was not astronomic. The bulb got just a few times bigger than originally.
Dialed in👍🧨❤️🔥
I'm clearly late to plant ginger, but can I start it now to get the plant set up, overeinter it inside and start rhizome production next year from the spring?
yes you can start it now and if you use a heat mat you'll be able to germinate it fast enough to still get a decent harvest come sept and then you can also move it inside and overwinter for next year
