    As a bricklayer, I can confirm a dry board will dry your mix up. You can uses a board many times, in fact the more times you used it, the better it would work for taking moisture out. That being said, being accurate with measuring water is the most important thing! Great video!

      Thank you, the board trick works in a pinch but focus needs to be initial water content

      Water content and mix consistency sets the entire process in motion. It's so important to start on the right foot to set yourself up for success in the later stages of the pour ad finishing work and even your final cure strength.

    You're one of the few people that I've seen who makes marbled concrete by actually mixing different layers of concrete. Everyone else just seems to sprinkle colorant, or use acid stains...neither of which ever seem to look like marble. I prefer your method. :)

    Very nice. Great finish look. Try making individual strands (irregular sizes) with your coloured concrete and then spiral or braid them together. (Each method will create a different result.) Then cut them into dissimilar sizes and pack them into your mould. This works great for dry packing as well then add a new colour for void filling.

    • @CONCRETECONCRETE
      @CONCRETECONCRETE  6 років тому +1

      Honestly? This batch was actually a little bit on the wet side. We're only mixing for an aesthetic look but if we were doing structural work it would be much drier and we would use mechanical vibration to keep it fluid during the pour. The wetter your concrete is the weaker it is, both in surface crustiness but also compressive strength.

    • @CONCRETECONCRETE
      @CONCRETECONCRETE  6 років тому +1

      And thank you for watching!

    • @nathanaelsperger901

      Thank you for replying. Loved your project! Let me just ask this then...does this apply with normal Quickcrete type concrete and portland cement mixes or just to your magical Grey Matter. Went to your web site and bookmarked for future concrete project money spending!

    • @CONCRETECONCRETE
      @CONCRETECONCRETE  6 років тому +1

      Yes this applies to all concrete. If you were to make two samples cylinders to do a compressive crush test with out of identical mix designs but made one mix super wet, the wet mix would also be the weak mix. For a sack a quikcrete you want to have just enough water for the mix to come together, no dry spots visible. But this mix will have very little flow unless vibrated as it has no plasticizers or water reducers in it.

    • @CONCRETECONCRETE
      @CONCRETECONCRETE  6 років тому +1

      So one big benefit to Grey matter is that because of the plasticizers and water reducers already in the mix you can get good flow without over saturating water.

    Hello, hello & hi, Mr. C C Guy, a very very nice video. Pleasant day to you. And, an extremely beautiful planter you made. I woke up this one fine morning & was just flipping thru UA-cam for anything interesting & different, & I came across your channel, & I'm so, so glad I did! I absolutely love what you taught me. I hear you talk about the length of videos, etc etc, and I said, "Mmm, I must communicate my thoughts on this to this guy." First thing; as an old school individual, who cares what the length of a video is, if you're going to be learning something?! Gosh man, we all live in a world where ppl are, & will be critical, (always), just for the sake of being critical! Simply ignore the naysayers! Professional ones, laymen ones, male, female, kids, teens, & whatever other grouping that ppl can be put into! If a video is made, & it's interesting enough to watch, why?, because it's teaching you how to do a certain subject, then ppl will watch the whole darn thing from start to finish & start it back again!!! I oftentimes tell ppl this! I do all kinds of creative designing. Clothing, art & crafts, house plans, interior decorating, and my list goes on & on. And, you wanna know what's the best part of all that is, I ENJOY IT! And I still find time to do nothing if I want. Go shopping, visiting family & friends from time to time, cooking, watch lots & lots of videos. And, oh yes, as a woman, this one likes to clean her space, so I clean my home & take care of all the other day to day chores that need to be done. So, my dear young fellow, pucker up, & do what you are gifted to do best. It has all to do with time management & contentment of mind. Not if you are rich or poor, nor from what part of the world you live. That matters not at all! As for me, I'll always be learning something! Bless up. Oh, by-the-way, do some pots in varying shades of blue & white, plz. And can clear glaze be put on the pot after it's dried & sanded?

    • @CONCRETECONCRETE
      @CONCRETECONCRETE  3 роки тому +1

      To hit maximum strength we have water reducers and plasticizer built into the mix so that we can mix as dry as possible. Many artist use way too much water in their mixes which results in weak concrete. Using our UHPC we hit a cure strength that is 4X-6X stronger than your average concrete mix. And it cures in a fraction of the time as well.

    • @CONCRETECONCRETE
      @CONCRETECONCRETE  6 років тому

      The wetness of your mix is always a balance act between the detail of the mold and how strong you want a piece to be. Dry mixes are structurally stronger but have lots of voids. Wet mixes can have less voids but tend to separate during vibration so strength of a piece can be variable and also lower. To date our Grey matter mix is the most fluid I've seen a mix while keep water content extremely low (giving higher cure strengths)

    Mix the cement to the consistency of peanut butter, if you need it to be more liquid you can add something called Flow Control which is a plasticizer the won’t reduce the strength of the finished product but will make it easier to pour and shape.

Technically Grey Matter could be classified as a "high early" mix design it gets very close to maximum strength(+10 000psi) in the first 24hrs. With a liberal amount of water you have 45 minutes work time and if your mix is on the dry side it could be as quick as 15 minutes.

    WOW, THANK YOU :) I have watched at least 75 DIY concrete videos looking for someone to elaborate on concrete recipes, color pigments, ect. I really appreciated your clearly in-depth instruction method. I have a really big question regarding working with concrete as dry as you did??? I want to make a large concrete planter or vessel to use as an Aquascape; a Container Water Garden for my porch to put a few water plants like Horsetail Reed and Papyrus and maybe a few little fish. (The plants are already sitting on my porch I have to water them like 10X's a day, I live in FL.) Anyways, I would like one about 2 feet in diameter and it would probably only be 6 - 8" deep, so a mold specifically for concrete would cost a fortune so I was thinking about using a bath tub for a baby, I saw one on FB for like $5 that is kidney shaped that seems like it would look nice and smooth if I could just lay the concrete in it and up the sides and smooth it with my hands. Can you please give me some advice if that will work without having a smaller thing on top or can you give me some direction on how I should build this? If I am asking too much I am so sorry, I would just appreciate some feedback :) Thanks, Jessica

    If you want to grow cacti in that, you will have to add drainage holes. You can do this by drilling while the concrete is still soft, or you can insert waxed or oiled dowels in the wet concrete when filling the mold.

      Hi Annie. www.concreteconcrete.com It's a mix we designed to make high quality home wares and architectural pieces. We designed it because most high performance concrete from a manufacturer involves a licensing agreement (approx $100K a year just for the license) and minimum orders we're tonnes per month. Grey Matter gives you chance to work with the high quality concrete without the licensing fees or minimum orders.

      I like making the "pancake" method is it helps give you defined patterning, if you try and mix all your colours in a bucket you have way less control. It is doable in one bucket but you'll have a greater degree of success with pancakes

    Talking about long videos:
    The best advice I've received for editing/writing/video/everything is to get in late and get out early. Your audience is very good at filling in the gaps. If you err on the side of cutting too much out, you're probably trimming enough to keep people engaged. Videos that feel long seem to drag because they miss that principle.
    I watch plenty of videos that are over 30 minutes, but I have to crank up the speed to get through most of them. When a video is really tightly edited though, you can get through 20 minutes and think it was only 5.

Most home users and even lots of amateur contractor use too much water to increase flow and make their life easier, but your really trading away the future of your casting for a slightly easier time pouring into your forms.

      Thank you for the kind words. Here's a link to the mold details on the website that includes dimensions. It's a pretty big planter but from usage we've fond that this size is ideal for most medium and small cactus and can accommodate some other decent sized plants. While a do love our small planter as well it is limiting to what you can put into it.
