Love Dark Energy - it's a great power!

Good analysis of this useful power. My first mate mystic uses it.

Thanks! I'm curious, have you found the 12" range to be an issue in regards to getting close enough to use it or winding up in combat for getting so close?

@@bricksblocksgaming8017 My opponent and I both like using guns and powers, so HTH engagement is less common in our games. I've found the range to be okay so far.

The armor interference pulls it down to a 4 star for me. Even if you're willing to use armor anyway, the mod for combat armor is crippling and heavy armor will slow you down and make that 12" range (really more like 15" with an aggressive power move) a bit more of an issue. Having to activate it and then win a contested roll is also a drawback over just shooting someone with a big gun. Still very good, but the push to stay naked with it is as risky a choice as always. On the plus side, Mystic's got other great AI powers, most notably Heal (which is about the only 5 star power for me) so naked space wizardry has multiple advantages. Excellent choice if your meta is full of robots, too.
It's also at its most impressive early in a campaign, where a +5 shooting attack is almost unheard of. Later on when your officers have some advancements and you can hire better soldiers and maximize things with loot you may start seeing more really high-quality shots that compare well to DE and often have much better range.

You're right, it can be less reliable than just a straight-up gun attack. I always feel like I'm missing out on XP when I'm not using a Power, which is part of why I like this over just shooting. That's why I created my Captain the way I did in that battle video you commented on - so he can still use Powers each turn as well. A benefit it has over a big gun is it can still be used in Combat, and stat boosts from levels don't have to go into the Shoot stat. I definitely wouldn't use this combined with Combat Armour - too much Armour Interference at that point.

@@bricksblocksgaming8017 That's true, the XP from power use should ultimately make up a big part of your overall progression, and Dark Energy, Psionic Fire, Remote Firing and Target Lock all offer ways to use a power (with the added power move) and make an attack in the same activation - which is very efficient. I usually try to have one of them on at least one officer myself, although sometimes I'm content to just build both officers as pure power-users and concentrate on support powers and utility/self-defense gear and advances.

I hadn't really thought about giving each Commander one "Shooting" Power. That's not a bad idea.

@@bricksblocksgaming8017 Remote Firing is very easy to fit on almost any officer - the TN isn't huge and most crews have at least one robot soldier somewhere. It's probably the least directly impactful of the four "make an attack" powers but it also requires the least setup to use., with Target Lock being close behind. The other two get into the whole armor issue and require more personal risk for the officer to use, but they impact the fighting a lot more as well.
