Providence:**makes a paradise where all species are allowed to live** Providence:**has been watching humans for a while, ready to give them sanctuary if they come to close too destroying themselves** Humans:**comes there of their own accord** Providence:**kills them** Outstanding move Providence.
That's what happenes when someone thinks themself a god of benevolence. Honestly i think Mithrix was actualy the more ethical of the brothers in the end (ignoring his decline into genecidal tendencies but thats Providences fault for locking him on the moon)
@@dr.cheeze5382 I agree. Although not said in the video, it appears that Providence didn't keep the creatures on Pehtricor V to save them because of his empathy, but rather by egoistical motivations, since he loved soul so much.
Just a correction: providence is very much closer to a zoo keeper than a paradise creator. Providence was there to ensure anything that got to the planet didn't get off, which is why he started killing the survivors when they tried to escape. This is shown through the imps, who are able to teleport to their own dimension, but can't once they land on petrichor
"Only two arms, two legs-but with 22 unblinking, crimson eyes." I like how it implies that the guy who killed Providence had 22 pairs of Lens-Maker's Glasses.
A possible reason for why providence attacked the contact light: He would have saved humans if they did indeed reach the brink of extinction, and clearly admired them in some way. However, he also saw their potential to eradicate species, the Bison being an example. The idea of human ships locating his planet and endangering the many species he had saved (some of which he had saved FROM humans) was too much to tolerate. Therefore, he tried to stop this potential wave of human explorers in their tracks by slaughtering them all.
A bit late to respond, but another very reasonable example was to stop them from going to the moon and accidentally freeing Mithrix By that point in time, Mithrix has been seething with anger for a long while and Providence is probably aware of this. So aware in fact, that he is trying to stop anyone from contacting Mithrix, to the point of killing anyone who even as far as dares to touch one of the beads of fealty, in fear that they may try to free Mithrix This paints an interesting light on Providence for me. Providence, for all the good and bad he has done is a man haunted by the one thing he regretted in his life. He had his reasons to do what he did, yet he still loved his brother and is sad. And despite all that he knows that if Mithrix were to ever escape, not only would he destroy all live on his path of rage, but he would also gun exactly for Providence And his fear is not to unreasonable. The Heretic attempted to capture the ship and if Providence hadn't stopped her, she would've used the contact light to free Mithrix
Well, there was only *Risk* of Rain. Doesn't mean there *will* be rain. Lol. Could see them doing that though. Hahaha. I was worried it would be rather boring since it was mainly just Logbook entries, but I'm happy to hear it was still enjoyable and that you liked it! Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it! :)
Creator's Note: after reviewing this video, I want to let people know that most the "The Brothers" section of the video (between 2:43 - 4:34) is conjecture. There's elements there that are true (brothers played on the planet - characterizations of Mithrix and Providence), but we don't exactly know how the brothers ended up on Petrichor V. They may have been born there, been taken there, or something else - that information hasn't been revealed yet (as far as I know). I apologize for framing it as something definitive when it was theory-crafting. It was a lesson learned for me and I feel I'm doing better with conjecture nowadays. Hope it doesn't detract from the video/story too much! Sorry again! Original Comment: This doesn't cover EVERYTHING in the lore of the games - there's some stuff that I left out because it was vague or wasn't needed for the telling of the story (Kur-skan and N'Kuhana are a couple of examples) - but it should cover all the information for the "Main Story" of Risk of Rain. Of course, as more content, and thus more story information, comes out for Risk of Rain 2, I'll make videos covering the new lore. And yes, that means there will be a video for the DLC that just came out. Thanks for watching!
I feel like Providence and mithrix could have reached an agreement instead of just betraying him. Just flat out say “I’ll help you with you’re designs, you help me with mine.
I agree, but I think it's also shows that Providence isn't as much of a victim as he first appears. Both of them are responsible for the breakdown in communication and ultimate tragedy of their story. It's a nice touch in my opinion. Thank you for watching!
40:44 On this point, the survivor of the previous game (a commando) survived and was converted to [REDACTED] by the void, also I think it was the Heretic that Mithrix was commanding, not the scavengers...although a lot of then really HAD fealty to him due to the beads...
I also thought it was the survivor from RoR1, but read somewhere that the Void Fiend is not the same Commando that was from the first game. Didn't follow up on that too much to verify though, so take it with a grain of salt.
@@SquatchGamingChannel hey there! A lot of lore is given in the public discord server, and there the devs themselves confirmed that this is A commando, not the survivor. The original fact that this was the original survivor was the void fiend was quickly retconned from the DLC description, which hints that there may be more plans for him.
@@SquatchGamingChannel Anytime comrade! I hang around a lot there and there’s a lot of lore enthusiasts who can help fill in a lot of info for you. I’ll see you around
I'm really wondering who was the one who used the laptop in Sky Meadow to go through the gate, before the group of survivors even arrived. The Void Fiend is really the only candidate so far? Which Artifact makes sense for the Void Fiend to possess (they did go to Bulwark's Ambry, after all)?
You want to know the most tragic part? Mithrix, after being betrayed by Providence, having his designs used to create a paradise for countless creatures that Mithrix had no love for, and being trapped upon a lunar prison for all eternity by Providence. Mithrix, deep down, beyond the hate and resentment that had stewed in him for millennia, beyond the despair that had grown in his soul, there was love. He still loved and missed his brother Providence. Egocentrism shows how much Providence’s betrayal had hurt Mithrix. And his final words aren’t a plea for mercy, a promise of vengeance, or simply cursing you, the player. Mithrix calls out to his brother, wishing to see him once more. And his last words are “BROTHER... PERHAPS... WE WILL GET IT RIGHT... NEXT TIME...” A final prayer. For a second chance, not just for him, but for his brother as well… to fix things. When faced with death, his last thoughts are not of anger and hatred. But of love, and sorrow. His final thoughts are of family. Mithrix may have been flawed, he may have lacked some level of empathy, but his love of Providence, his desire to see his brother happy, was sincere.
It's all due to you guys! Most of the games I cover are because people recommended them to me or requested them! If it wasn't for you guys, videos like this would never have been made, so it's all thanks to you! :) And also, I appreciate you watching them because if no one watched them, I would make them, so thanks for watching!
Fun fact left out, acrid is the only charcter from ror1 in ror2. He was there for both games. I also think the point that the charcters in ror1 committed mass genocide was missed, which is why the enemies of ror2 hold a grudge against the peaceful survivors. Great video, I totally understand why you didn't put EVERYTHING in. Think it would be a great sequal video if you tried to give every detail of the story of ROR. Overall, this is a great over-view of the story thus far for someone who is just playing the game casually. Not for someone who wants to know about the heretic lore, void-lore, the newt and artificier, or just every detail ever.
Soooooo what about Bandit? Was brother really just present for the whole: “Aye man this place got good loot and making me a killing machine? Bro you know I’m all over that!”
Nah, it would probably ended up worse Cain and Abel style. Their differences were always massive despite the fact that they tried to work together and definietly cared for one another. However as they grew the intentionaly or not also grew further apart from each other. They would've been always in conflict especialy with nobody supervising them.
I cant understand why Providence didn't just help Mithrix return to their home planet and then go back to Petrichor. Providence would find peace and Mithrix could find another soul wielder to help him
@@rachitchauhan6521 wait wasnt the golden... aueralionite? (think i fucked the spelling up but w/e) built from a blueprint of one of the brothers...? so on this Friendly Brothers Timeline, hypothetically they help eachother to make a servant/clone of the opposite brother, repeat so either has one (maybe some limits or something in place so they have to agree on like, universe changing decisions) and just amicably split ways outside of the occasional " *hey uh... i dont like the color or smell of the horsehead galaxy so can we... change that?* "
Thank you very much! :) Yeah, it's pretty in depth, and this doesn't even cover everything that's out there! Hopoo did a great job crafting it all and I can't wait to see what they have in store in the future!
I thought that artificers people who where looking for heaven could have been looking for the home of the cyclopians that used to be the home of mithrix and providence
Could be! I personally don't think they had an *exact* defined place that they were looking for, just a paradise somewhere out in the cosmos. I also find it noteworthy that they were trying to find a Paradise, and Providence made one on Petrichor V. Interesting correlation there, and I also feel it's pretty ironic that that Paradise is a hell for humans. Lol. Thanks for watching!
I do! Hopefully it's something we get to see in the future. Each DLC is supposed to be themed around a specific thing, so maybe one of them will be around their original home!
the “dead” void reavers at the bottom of the newt shop aren’t dead they’re frozen. the rip in space was created by them and they were there to take the newt to time jail for helping the survivors. he froze them in place so he could stay.
I think you missed a step. After the Contact Light disappeared UES sent what we only know as UES [REDACTED] as a recovery/rescue mission. That mission either completely failed or had limited success so they planned a more prepared expedition and sent the Safe Travels. REX for example was left on the planet following the UES [REDACTED], that's why we find him deactivated. He wasn't from the Contact Light, he was from the 2nd ship
I've seen and read that idea, but I haven't read or seen anything that convinces me that that's the case, so I'm of the opinion that the UES [REDACTED] refers to the UES Safe Travels. By all means, if you've got some that says otherwise, I'll change my mind, but I'm not personally convinced. Thanks for watching!
I agree with this theory as well, seeing there's quite a few item logs, especially those relating to nukhana referencing some sort of group that used said items. It was most likely another group that went after the contact light (probably for the cargo, just like the Safe Travels was sent for) but found themselves in the same dilemma as the first people to land there. The Safe Travels had to be sent after that group because UES heard nothing back from them again.
Not sure if this was intended or not, but both brothers (Providence moreso) seem to be of questionable morality. Mithrix seems to have been practical, having foresight and ultimately seeking of ways to aid their people. Providence was always about himself and reckless, before seeking to play a benevolent god to other denizens of the universe. With the first gate still on Petrichor, Mithrix's plan to save their stranded tribesmen would have never cut them off from the planet, as they could always return. It was not one of complete abandonment. Yet with Providence's plan, which is really just a modification of Mithrix's, he went on to carelessly relocate other creatures to his world, which were notably destructive to their previous homeworlds. Providence is a traitor, a plagiarist, and a self-centered individual whose idealism mattered more to him than logic or family. You could approximate what he did as sacrificing his brother for godhood. Which is odd because Mithrix is depicted as the cold perfectionist, but his actions make him out to be the practical one with foresight and empathy for his people. He eventually grew hateful, as one would, when the only person he trusted in the entire universe imprisoned and left him to die. And he only really went over the edge after millenia of watching his brother exploit his designs and use them against him. Mithrix, i understand. Providence is a false god, who ultimately creates the greatest threat in the universe due to his self-centeredness and unchecked moral superiority.
Wonderfully put! I thought it was interesting that they made Mithrix out to be cold and calculating, but at the same time, showed that he did have some empathy. Really added depth to his character and made him more interesting. They sort of did the same thing with Providence too: if you just have the context of the second game, he does seem benevolent, but when you learn what he did to gain that position and power and know what he did to the Contact Light in the first game, it's a lot harder to sympathize with him. He's a hypocrite, something Mithrix loved to point out. Ultimately, I think it goes to show that nobody, not even "Gods" are perfect, and its those character flaws that make the characters interesting. I hope we get to see more about the two in future DLCs. Thanks for watching, btw! Really appreciate it! :)
Nice read ! It reminds me of a line in a log that reads "two brothers, one of compassion, the other ambition". It could be that the ambitious one was in fact Providence yearning to become a god, and Mithrix the one who ultimately cared for his kin the whole time (some of his possible final words seem to imply that he does in fact miss his brother now that he is dead). A bit far-fetched, but not impossible.
I'm pretty sure Providence didn't have a god-complex, he literally ignored any attempt at worshipping him and he is only referred to as a hero and not a god(all be it their race definitely have god-like powers). If anything he was as obsessed with saving life as a whole(being willing to sacrifice a few to save the many) just as much as Mithrix was obsessed with perfecting his designs like a real OCD case. From what I can guess they are something close to the manifestations of soul and design, if they have other kin it's most likely mass and blood(which may or may not be ¨her¨ or Nkuhana). And if they are the manifestation of said things it would make sense if one carries the chaotic emotions of the soul and the other heartless design and are obsessed with their element. It's never mentioned that others of their kind even exist, with Mithrix outright stating that they have yet to know. ¨then surely more of our kind awaits among the other worlds¨ indicates that he isn't 100% certain like how we say there most exist life in space. The log also implies that Mithrix isn't doing it to save anyone or that anyone even needs rescue, he only says there might be others to motivate his brother, ¨If your heart truly yearns to save...¨, which is Mithrix telling Providence that. Not only Mithrix but Providence also shows regret by how he is solemnly watching the moon. Also fun fact, Providence have never lied in the story as he has never said anything beyond the ROR1. We only ever hear/read about Mithrix, the creatures, the survivors and others view about him. Side note: We never get to see what gift ¨she¨ gave to Providence, and since it's stated in SOTV logs Providence/Mithrix is the only thing standing between the void and the planet/moon, with the moon being taken as soon as Mithrix dies. But what about the planet, why is it still there?
It's a super great game, and although it takes some kind to get used to it, I definitely recommend it. Plus, the soundtrack is AMAZING, one of the high points of the game. It really is a great package all around! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for watching them, man! I really appreciate the continued support! :) Idk if I will make one for the characters, but information from the DLC will definitely be covered!
One thing that could've been mentioned is the portal mechanics: all the portals are guarded by piwerful monsters and the portal is only charged after killing them and the other inhabitants. I think the portals are charged by souls, explaining why we humans couldnt figure it out and why Mithrix cant travel as well, being bad at manipulating souls. And the gate on the contact light in my opinion is the one on saturn that helped Prov transport the bisons. Despite the gates being buildable over great distances (why would there be a portal there or on the moon before the first teleportations), its most logical for this teleporter to be the same one as before as poachers could've found it while hunting for the bisons.
He's al- *cough, cough* Sorry lemme do that again. HE'S ALIVE!! Thanks for covering RoR2. Alot of people dont realize that there is actually an active and passive story in this game. Its dark, mysterious, and disturbing and I love it.
Haha. Yeah, I'm alive. It's just me that works on the videos, and I've still got other things that pull my time away (like a full time job and my lovely family), so it always takes me a while to make these, but I'm always working on something! :) I was honestly surprised at how in depth the story of the games were. I think Hopoo does a great job of giving you just enough that you understand what happened, but also leaving things vague enough that you get pulled in! It's fantastic! Thanks for taking the time for watching, man! I appreciate it! :)
@@SquatchGamingChannel If you are to revisit the story again, I’d like you to take a second look at the main story from Mithrix’s perspective. What Hopoo Games did here was create a story that is morally grey, with nobody being inherently in the right in the end. It’s what I find so fascinating about the story
The Newt caused the leak in the void. The Newt has great control over teleportation, the ability to create portals, time manipulation, and he might as well be invincible. Not to mention he has a two-way portal connected to the void, surrounded by Void Reavers covered in the same crystal that he froze the Artificer with. edit: it seems more likely that the Newt is only able to perceive time, and that the Bazaar's frozen state was probably caused by Mithrix/Providence, considering that they also created the Bulwark's Ambry and A Moment, Fractured, which both are also frozen in time. I would also like some input on this part of the Newt's logbook entry: "With his mind preoccupied, he didn’t notice some changes had taken place since his last visit. He didn’t notice that the water levels were a bit higher - and a bit warmer. He didn’t notice that all the flyfish were gone. He didn’t notice the blue glow. He didn’t notice the long, pale arms, grasping in the depths below." I'm assuming that the place the Newt was visiting is the Bazaar, but that doesn't really match up with what is written in the log. Earlier in the log, the place he is visiting is described to be secret and paused in time, which matches the Bazaar nicely, but it doesn't match with this last part of the log. The place he is describing doesn't really make sense to me.
As a ror2 veteran whos actually put in the time to read almost every single lore/item codex im so glad to see you review the story and make it easier for people to understand, would love to hear your take on what the "void" is and the heretic.
A couple criticisms. It is greatly hinted at that the “gate” that took Mithrix to Commencement is the one found in A Moment, Fractured. Also, the reason Providence broke the gate was to stop Mithrix and his war machines from traveling to other planets to conquer, due to his love of life.
I know this is 4 months a bit too late but where exactly is that hinted at? The obelisk being what sent Mithrix to Commencement? Not only is the moon teleporter the same exact design as the Primordial Teleporter, but the log for “A Moment, Whole” straight up says that it was used to send Mithrix’s trusted minions to “vaults” so they wouldn’t be harmed by his rampage, as shown with the Twister Scavenger
imagine if providence just let mithrix go and supplied him with teleporters from petrichor via... The teleporters? Like dude, you can just make teleporters as a hobby and hand some to mithrix for his shenadigans every now and then.
I feel like the female Mythrix talked about who sacrificed herself for Providence is the one who tore out of the void, created the "leak" Acrid talked about in his log. She probably got captured in Providence's place, seemed dead to the gods, but ended up tearing escaping her prison.
The one who died (she) is the heretic. She was one of the bird creatures you find in the game, she was killed by mithrix and he cut all her body parts that is why when you gather all the heretic items you become her. The bird creatures are also considered genius and they are good with technology which helped them create the aloe worship unit.
The heretic was killed by Providence? She had attempted to hijack the Contact Light, presumably for Mithrix, but was cut down by Providence and his “crystaline blade”
it’s either the person that mithrix referred as “her” or another big creature from the void plane. The void kinda reminds me of the ocean and the reavers look like crabs, so there might have been a big void fish or something that opened the portal
I really hope we do get more info on kur-skan some time, such an interesting character that we know so little about outside of their survivor log (which is super cool).
I was worried that this would be a bit of a struggle to watch since it's mainly made up of log entries, so I'm happy to hear it was entertaining! :) Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
I feel like the "she" referred to by Mithrix and Providence would most likely be N'kuhana who from what I understand from the lore of N'kuhana's opinion, is a sort of higher being, similar to the brothers. She utilizes soul energy as named by the item and no longer appears due to the vast amount of life on the planet. Perhaps she didn't die but is actually just not able to come 'alive' in the same way that the brothers are. I think that she and Providence were two sides of the same coin, with Providence being a creation god in a sense, while N'kuhana was a death god. It could potentially be explored upon in later dlc as like the void was.
Ofc this is just me spit-balling and it would be an big string to pull, but considering that the Voidling plays such a huge role but has only been first developed into the survivors of the void dlc, I don't think it could be entirely unplausible
After the video, I just think that the original cargo of the ship must be full of weapons and war-related stuff + a teleporter. The ppl behind the detour route is definitely planning to do something big
I remember when I first started playing RoR2 a month and a half ago and saw the lore entries. I was like, "...nah, I'm just looking for a good roguelike. No thanks." And yet, here I am. Lol Brilliantly done, by the way. Good stuff, brother!
are you planning to (at some point at least) cover characters specifically? I'm curious about how (spoilers) the artificer got stuck in the bazaar between time, or how rex got in the abyssal depths, and so on for the other characters. I have played the game and I do know that there isn't much lore for the survivors specifically, but still.
I didn't have anything planned for the characters, but if people would like to see it, I can make it. I unfortunately won't be able to expand on the story much past what's in their log entry though, so it'll probably just be more of what you or the viewer already know. Could be fun for some people to watch though! Thanks for the suggestion! And thanks for watching!
@@SquatchGamingChannel Yeah I know there's pretty little stuff about the characters... maybe throw in the lore for other species such as the tar "people", or other species like the parents and children. There even are other separate, more niche stories like the one of the scientist team aboard of the Safe Travels seen in the Jellyfish and beetles logs. I almost feel guilty about suggesting a video about the lore of every single item log. There is so much stories and all of them so brief. I still would watvh it though.
There are some lore entries related to the Heresy items and Kur-Skan, who is the Heretic, that imply that she placed the teleporter on the ship and tried to fly it away from Petrichor, maybe so Mithrix could escape the moon and destroy Earth like he said? But then obviously Providence destroyed the Contact Light and eviscerated the Heretic, turning her into Heresy items
If nobody has said it, I think the "her" mentioned over and over is N'kuhana, but we don't know much about her. afaik she's only mentioned in the N'kuhanas Opinion and N'kuhanas Retort (the malachite elite aspect) items i'm not done with the video sorry if these were mentioned lol
Bro i cannot believe providence said i dont wanna use the portals then used the portals to teleport around the universe stealing people he definitely could have reasoned with his brother that moron
This was an excellent timeline for one of my all-time favorite video games series. Thank you for explaining this in-depth story. A lot of it seems to be hidden
Don't get me wrong here, I love Risk of Rain 2 and am really pumped for any and ALL future DLC but can you imagine Risk of Rain 3?? Goddamn , this is one of the best modern video game series I've played.
Good video overall, left out some stuff such as the Heretic and N'kuhana but those are extremely speculative topics to dive into with not a lot of concrete stuff to go off of. (I.e "Her" being N'kuhana Heretic setting the distress signal off/making the captain detour. Theories and such that have weight to them but can't be proven) The one main gripe I did have though was in regards to "how did the teleporter get on the ship" the Contact Light mentions sending down several engineers and xenobiologist's down to the planet for study and to make forward scouting camps, eventually coming across a teleporter and sending it back to the UES Contact Light and then resulting in Providence showing up. It's why the Teleporter in the intro cutscene is shown on a flat-bed trailer rather than on its own, it was deliberately placed onto the ship by the Contact Light to return back.
Thank you very much! Yeah, the speculation regarding those two is exactly why I didn't include them (plus, I have some opinions/thoughts that differ from the accepted theories regarding them, but those are just as speculative, so I didn't include them either). Oh, that's interesting! I've never understood the lore as suggesting that. I've always took it that the Teleporter mysteriously ended up onboard prior to their arrival, not that it was brought aboard after arriving there. Main reasons being the lone Survivor's confusion about the Teleporter being onboard in Providence's Logbook entry in Risk of Rain 1 (in my opinion, they shouldn't be so confused if it was known it was brought aboard during an early trip to Petrichor V), and the fact that there's only an hour between the Contact Light's arrival and Providence's attack. Sure, it's possible that someone sent by the ship was able to find a Teleporter that quickly (we find them on the planet much faster than that); but brought back onboard and discerned what it was? Idk... I'm skeptical. Plus, Siren's Call doesn't mention Xenoarchaeologists and engineers being sent down, but it does mention them being *hopeful*. I took that as them preparing to go down, but not actually having done so yet. Happy to change my mind if I missed something though. Never a shame to learn something new! Thanks again for watching. Hope you enjoyed! :)
@@SquatchGamingChannel In regards to the survivor and Providence logbook, the line "Why did we have a teleporter from this planet?" Seems to align more about the UES's ulterior motives rather than any outside influence by Providence. Gotta recall that Providence was originally intending to save humans incase they would destroy themselves nor does it make any sense for him to hand over the technology that could free Mithrix. And there's the aforementioned flat-bed trailer the teleporter is on which kinda proves that humans brought it aboard. The contact light might not have known exactly what they brought on board but still sensed value out of it, personally I'm kinda opposed to this since the Survivor denotes teleportation as being the one failure of mankind, refusing to believe the imp could do it biologically. The possibility to teleport goods and delivers from anywhere seems incredibly powerful for a company primarily based on space delivery. Which could explain the sudden detour from a redacted source, and the fact it was kept secret from the crew (which I find the most plausible but lacks that nail to really drive it) and obviously UES's top secret line when hiring RoR2's Captain. Personally always felt the ending of RoR2 was weaker to RoR simply because it makes zero sense to actually go to the moon, if this is a supposed rescue mission to save built by UES. Why is the Safe Travels not a rescue ship according to Captain? Why do they bother going planetside at all despite there not being any human life signs? Why on earth would the rescue mentioned be top secret in its entirety? (Mentioned in Bandit's log) Leaving the planet makes sense when you're trapped on it, going to kill the brother of the guy whose responsible kinda doesn't... unless that same guy was also the creator of teleporters. The big secret is UES trying to get its hands on the power of teleportation and trying to keep it quiet before someone else figures it out, slightly proved by Bandit's logbook who, despite sneaking on for promises of treasure and loot, seems to not know about the teleporter. The only question regarding the following is how the hell did the UES even know about the teleporters in the first place. Sure the Siren's Call logbook mentions "a matching pair" presumably referring to the teleporters, but that's obviously 5 days after the detour is called for.
I agree with everything you're saying with regards to the UES conspiracy and whatnot, but I'm still not convinced that it was Humans that brought the Teleporter aboard within the hour of arriving at Petrichor V and being attacked by Providence. With regards to the flatbed trailer it's on, if it was given to the humans prior to their arrival to the Planet, they could have just put it on the trailer before they got there, but it's more than just that. My bit of speculation surrounding the Teleporter is that whoever asked for the detour also gave the Contact Light that Teleporter; the interaction would have been something like the unknown agent telling the Captain, "Hey, I know you guys haven't gotten Teleportation. What if I told you that you could have it? All you have to do is go to these coordinates in Space where you'll find a planet. Go to the Planet and find a structure similar to this one I've given you. Then you'll have the technology." To be clear, I don't think it was Providence at all, but someone else. Who that person was remains to be seen: could've been something from the Void hoping Humanity would kill Providence (which is what ended up happening); could've been one of Mithrix's servants somehow (like some people suspect with Kur-Skan); hell, it could've been UES itself who we suspect to have some sort of secret motive to sending the Safe Travels to the Planet (maybe they just stumbled on a Teleporter on one of the planets Providence saved and learned enough through it to direct the Contact Light to Petrichor V). Unfortunately, we don't have any concrete details confirming exactly HOW the Teleporter got onboard which is why I left them pretty vague in the video, and until we get those, we'll have to agree to disagree on that point, but hopefully we get a DLC or something that expands on this and can put this to rest! Thanks for taking the time to talk with me and reply. I love to have back and forths with people as it opens my eyes to things I hadn't thought of or considered when making this (like someone mentioned Providence was going onboard the Contact Light to chase Kur-Skan, which was something I hadn't even considered [or believe]). Really appreciate it! :)
I thought that Providence trapped Mithrix on the moon because he knew rhat Mithrix would want to destroy all like that were beneath him, not because he didn't want to planet hop with Mithrix and stay home.
This is already an incredible video as is however I feel like the entire story of the heretic is missing. It's heavily implied that skur kan used the teleporter on the contact light too teleport aboard the ship to flee from Providence who was pursuing her. This lead to the Heretic busting up the bridge of the ship and Providence killing her.
Thank you very much! :) So you mean the reason Providence teleported aboard the Contact Light was to chase Kur-Skan? I hadn't considered that, and can see it being the reason why he went on board! The reason I didn't include her story (besides not thinking of that angle) was because I personally interpreted the Heretic log entries to imply that she betrayed *Mithrix*, not Providence. This is due to the Visions of Heresy saying her pieces were scattered across the Moon, and the Essence of Heresy saying that one of them was placed at the site of her betrayal. Since I interpreted her story that way, I thought her warping aboard the Contact Light was a side story that wasn't necessary for the telling of the Main Story (like most of the other Survivor's stories). I felt that the fact that Kur-Skan arrived on the Contact Light after Providence supported my thinking as I didn't feel like he could be searching for her aboard the ship if she wasn't on it in the first place (plus, why would she risk going aboard the ship he was attacking if she was trying to get away from it?). Thanks for sharing that with me! I always love to learn things that I may have missed! And thanks again for watching!
just goes to show, kids: communicate your wants and needs with people and keep your ego in check or you will end up fucking it all up (also if someone has 10 pairs of glasses on and at least 7 syringes stuck in their hip maybe don't throw hands with them)
Like a lot of stories and mythologies, I think this is a demonstration of what happens when someone or something pushes hard to break balance. Mythrix wanted to hold onto cold rationality, while Providence wanted only soul and compassion. Both are needed for balance. When that balance shifts too far to one side, things get.... bad.
That's what I'm working on now! If I get enough free time and I sit down and focus on it, I can have it done by the end of the week! Otherwise, it'll be out some time next week! Stay tuned! And thanks for watching! :)
First Dead Cells and now this! Thanks for keeping me in mind for when you get new games, man! Appreciate the continued support! :) Hope you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
This seriously made me laugh out loud. Hahaha. You're absolutely right though: music to the game is absolutely fantastic, superb, amazing, and any other positive adjective you can think of. Thanks for watching! :)
I wasn’t planning on making a video for RoRR because I didn’t think there was a lot of new lore that came out with the game and I covered RoR1 in this video. I haven’t taken a look myself, but is there new lore in RoRR? I do plan on making another video whenever the new DLC for RoR2 comes out though! Also planning on making at least one other RoR2 video around then, but may make more. We’ll see what happens! Thanks for watching!
@SquatchGamingChannel Sorry I just saw your reply now thanks to someone liking my comment. I believe the the new survivors and items do have more info about the ship situation (even prior to the embark) but that's it. Now for the RoR2 DLC, it seems to have a lot more stuff, given the person in charge for its story already nade clear the main threat is someone who worshipped Providence and sees itself as a brother of him.
what's with the artifacts? are they gifts that providence gave his followers, like mithrix and his lunar items? the gate in the sky meadows clearly is of providence's design, going to Bulwark (of the Weak)'s Ambry. But the technology there...why are the codes on slabs, scattered across the planet? Who left that laptop there, going through the gate before the group of survivors arrived? What code did they put in, and what are they doing with the power they received?
In my mind the "her" referenced is N'hakuna, in the item N'hakuna's lament, it talks more about her, and her sacrifice, and i (think) that its referenced in sacrificial dagger and other items that seem like they come from African/sub-Saharan cultures.
N’kuhana isn’t dead though, the sacrificial dagger and wetland aspect show people gaining real advantage from worship of N’kuhana and if she had sacrificed herself, it would be before mithrix was trapped
I felt I struggled a bit for the writing of this one, but I'm happy to hear you enjoyed! Thanks so much for the kind words and thanks so much for watching! :)
Amazing video and insight, thanks for connecting the lore! Thanks alot, gave me alot of insight! Just got the game on last december and have to add, one of the best games I've ever played! And that's not even the story itself included. Now this gives me even more curiosity, and respect for the makers to create such a fascinating story, that the player can take a part of!
is your story of how the brothers ended up on petrichor 5 speculation? i've never heard anyone mention it before, and i've always interpreted mithrix's attempt to escape petrichor as being driven by a desire to find other beings that he can call his peers and share his designs with, not by a desire to return home, and i think this makes sense because of its contrast to providence's attachment to "vermin" as well as mithrix's wording in "surely more of our kind awaits among the other worlds" from a moment, fractured's log implying that he is searching for any beings that the brothers could call equals, not necessarily their own race.
Short answer is Yes, absolutely, but I feel like it has ground to stand upon If you're interested, I can give you the whole spiel, but it's going to be a wall of text that'll take me a while to type out. Just let me know. Thanks for watching!
thank you so much for providing the story for this game as the DLC was just announced for console and I wanted a clear understanding of the story thank you⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
It’s something I considered in the past, but never really followed through with it. Just don’t have the time to do that, these videos, and everything else in my life! If you’re interested, here’s a free audiobook I did for a very small author from around that time: ua-cam.com/video/Pd2xF3TYw2o/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!
There will be at least one more on the DLC of the game, but I don't have anything planned for the game after that. We'll see what happens though. If people are interested in seeing little videos about some of the lore, I can definitely make some! Thanks for watching! :)
So Providence is a coward. Like, he never talked with his brother about how he felt, what he wanted? No, instead he just stranded him on the moon to avoid the confrontation.
An alternate scenario in which both brothers get to fight each other to the death, instead of being killed one by one by creatures alien to the planet (humans) sounds SO interesting after watching this video. I just don't know how it could be translated into gameplay, therefore making an epic animated fight the only seemingly reasonable option.
the only thing is that I think multiple people survived the first game, because the chararaters were all brought back for ror2 (such as how the commando and huntress are both in the game)
Wouldn't say I "analyze" - just summarize the story that's given by the game - but there's several other videos like this on the channel! If you like this one, you might like the others! Thanks for taking the time to watch (even if this is the only one you do watch). I really do appreciate it!
Is there any explanation for why Mithrix is big chilling a minutes walk away from a totally functional space shuttle? I mean, even if he can't use it, the dude's already a super being crafting giant mechs. I think he could probably figure out how to travel from the moon to the surface instead of waiting for millennia for his busted teleporter to get activated.
Yeah, but then we wouldn't have a final boss to fight... That's really the best explanation I've got. Lol. You've made your way around, man! Appreciate you taking the time to watch all you have! :)
Providence:**makes a paradise where all species are allowed to live**
Providence:**has been watching humans for a while, ready to give them sanctuary if they come to close too destroying themselves**
Humans:**comes there of their own accord**
Providence:**kills them**
Outstanding move Providence.
That's what happenes when someone thinks themself a god of benevolence. Honestly i think Mithrix was actualy the more ethical of the brothers in the end (ignoring his decline into genecidal tendencies but thats Providences fault for locking him on the moon)
Humans: *Kill him back*
Providence: *surprised stone face*
Humans: *Time to escape prison*
Humans: *Captured by black hole crabs*
@@dr.cheeze5382 I agree. Although not said in the video, it appears that Providence didn't keep the creatures on Pehtricor V to save them because of his empathy, but rather by egoistical motivations, since he loved soul so much.
Just a correction: providence is very much closer to a zoo keeper than a paradise creator. Providence was there to ensure anything that got to the planet didn't get off, which is why he started killing the survivors when they tried to escape.
This is shown through the imps, who are able to teleport to their own dimension, but can't once they land on petrichor
He thought that they were from the moon or communicated to mithrix and he kills everything that is from the moon or is trying to get there
So Providence and Mithrix wielded the power of creation and were both killed by lone humans holding a ship full of guns.

A bit late to respond, but another very reasonable example was to stop them from going to the moon and accidentally freeing Mithrix
By that point in time, Mithrix has been seething with anger for a long while and Providence is probably aware of this. So aware in fact, that he is trying to stop anyone from contacting Mithrix, to the point of killing anyone who even as far as dares to touch one of the beads of fealty, in fear that they may try to free Mithrix
This paints an interesting light on Providence for me. Providence, for all the good and bad he has done is a man haunted by the one thing he regretted in his life. He had his reasons to do what he did, yet he still loved his brother and is sad. And despite all that he knows that if Mithrix were to ever escape, not only would he destroy all live on his path of rage, but he would also gun exactly for Providence
And his fear is not to unreasonable. The Heretic attempted to capture the ship and if Providence hadn't stopped her, she would've used the contact light to free Mithrix
That sure backfired.
Excellent point!
Which kind of shocked me tbh. He could have just..asked what their purpose was for coming and monitored them, but chose violence.

Original Comment:
This doesn't cover EVERYTHING in the lore of the games - there's some stuff that I left out because it was vague or wasn't needed for the telling of the story (Kur-skan and N'Kuhana are a couple of examples) - but it should cover all the information for the "Main Story" of Risk of Rain. Of course, as more content, and thus more story information, comes out for Risk of Rain 2, I'll make videos covering the new lore.
And yes, that means there will be a video for the DLC that just came out.
Thanks for watching!
Good luck deciphering that stuff
Awesome! I should join the Discord so I can keep up to date with their information! Thanks for sharing that! :)
NEXT TIME...”
A final prayer.
Really cool that you cover stories of games like these! Your videos are great.
It's all due to you guys! Most of the games I cover are because people recommended them to me or requested them! If it wasn't for you guys, videos like this would never have been made, so it's all thanks to you! :)
And also, I appreciate you watching them because if no one watched them, I would make them, so thanks for watching!
A military mission is hardly peaceful
Wait commando and huntress are also from ROR1? Or do you mean that in the lore they are separate people even though they have the same job in-game?

Nah, it would probably ended up worse Cain and Abel style. Their differences were always massive despite the fact that they tried to work together and definietly cared for one another. Yeah, it's pretty in depth, and this doesn't even cover everything that's out there!
Do you think the place that mithrix and providence where is like the other dimensions , like the void and the red plane
I do! Hopefully it's something we get to see in the future. Each DLC is supposed to be themed around a specific thing, so maybe one of them will be around their original home!

@@idontknowhowtonamemyself5167 well that depends on if she was part of the safe travels mission which I don’t think she was
the “dead” void reavers at the bottom of the newt shop aren’t dead they’re frozen. the rip in space was created by them and they were there to take the newt to time jail for helping the survivors. he froze them in place so he could stay.
@@SquatchGamingChannel That makes sense, I agree.
Thanks for the well put-together video!
Love watching your stuff
long story short, there both evil, but providence never actually destroys. or, he only destroys that wioth no physicle nature
Tough as nails game with a soundtrack I love with a story you have to dig and invest in to get?

Thanks so much for watching them, man! I really appreciate the continued support! :)
Idk if I will make one for the characters, but information from the DLC will definitely be covered!
Mythrix: brother let us traverse the stars together and show people what we have created!
Providence: nah *does it on his own anyway

I was honestly surprised at how in depth the story of the games were.
He didn’t notice the long, pale arms, grasping in the depths below."
I'm assuming that the place the Newt was visiting is the Bazaar, but that doesn't really match up with what is written in the log. Earlier in the log, the place he is visiting is described to be secret and paused in time, which matches the Bazaar nicely, but it doesn't match with this last part of the log. The place he is describing doesn't really make sense to me.
You mean that newt that sells us the artificer? I actually killed him one time using Lost-Seer's glasses 👍
was very funny
As a ror2 veteran whos actually put in the time to read almost every single lore/item codex im so glad to see you review the story and make it easier for people to understand, would love to hear your take on what the "void" is and the heretic.
A couple criticisms. It is greatly hinted at that the “gate” that took Mithrix to Commencement is the one found in A Moment, Fractured. Also, the reason Providence broke the gate was to stop Mithrix and his war machines from traveling to other planets to conquer, due to his love of life.
I know this is 4 months a bit too late but
where exactly is that hinted at? The obelisk being what sent Mithrix to Commencement?
Not only is the moon teleporter the same exact design as the Primordial Teleporter, but the log for “A Moment, Whole” straight up says that it was used to send Mithrix’s trusted minions to “vaults” so they wouldn’t be harmed by his rampage, as shown with the Twister Scavenger
Going back to read the log entries after watching this video makes so much more sense. Love it.
26:40 the best risk of rain soundtrack starts playing
imagine if providence just let mithrix go and supplied him with teleporters from petrichor via... The teleporters?
Like dude, you can just make teleporters as a hobby and hand some to mithrix for his shenadigans every now and then.
ah the ol "imagine if providence wasnt a total douche of a brother?"
this would probably be a monster breeding and farming game if that was the case
I feel like the female Mythrix talked about who sacrificed herself for Providence is the one who tore out of the void, created the "leak" Acrid talked about in his log. She probably got captured in Providence's place, seemed dead to the gods, but ended up tearing escaping her prison.
Fun fact, flora means Nature, or plants. Fauna means organic life like animals.
I have been playing this game for years and never thought to watch lore about and holy mother of god am I happy that I did. Everything makes sense now
it’s either the person that mithrix referred as “her” or another big creature from the void plane. The void kinda reminds me of the ocean and the reavers look like crabs, so there might have been a big void fish or something that opened the portal
Most likely the person referred as “her” because the portal is too small
I really hope we do get more info on kur-skan some time, such an interesting character that we know so little about outside of their survivor log (which is super cool).
pretty sure kur skan is the heretic?
I LOVE this video!! its so goooood. Your way of story telling keeps it so interesting throughout the video this is seriously so good!
I was worried that this would be a bit of a struggle to watch since it's mainly made up of log entries, so I'm happy to hear it was entertaining! :)
Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
Fantastic dude. So cool to see the depth of the game laid out for us. It just added another level to an already really fun game. Cheers for that!
No thanks."
And yet, here I am. Lol
Brilliantly done, by the way.
This would be a great idea
We'll see what happens :)
@@SquatchGamingChannel I would love to see these videos! Enjoyed watching this one, hope it will bring attention, you've done a marvelous job
If nobody has said it, I think the "her" mentioned over and over is N'kuhana, but we don't know much about her. afaik she's only mentioned in the N'kuhanas Opinion and N'kuhanas Retort (the malachite elite aspect) items
i'm not done with the video sorry if these were mentioned lol
She's also mentioned by Mithrix as being able to travel between planets and how she sacrificed her self for something but you already knew that.
Bro i cannot believe providence said i dont wanna use the portals then used the portals to teleport around the universe stealing people he definitely could have reasoned with his brother that moron
This was an excellent timeline for one of my all-time favorite video games series. Thank you for explaining this in-depth story. A lot of it seems to be hidden
can we all just stop and appreciate the funny text for the queens gland in the logbook for ror2
(I.e "Her" being N'kuhana
Heretic setting the distress signal off/making the captain detour.
Theories and such that have weight to them but can't be proven)
The one main gripe I did have though was in regards to "how did the teleporter get on the ship" the Contact Light mentions sending down several engineers and xenobiologist's down to the planet for study and to make forward scouting camps, eventually coming across a teleporter and sending it back to the UES Contact Light and then resulting in Providence showing up.
(Mentioned in Bandit's log)
Leaving the planet makes sense when
you're trapped on it, going to kill the brother of the guy whose responsible kinda doesn't... unless that same guy was also the creator of teleporters.
Then you'll have the technology."
To be clear, I don't think it was Providence at all, but someone else.
Also, I thought Mithrix intentionally began destroying the moon of commencement in order to kill you
moon: disappears
environment of Petrachor 5: Royally Fucked, oceans goin wild, tides disappearing, shit fuckin up
damn
Damn, I didn't even think about that. That would totally destroy the ecosystem of Petrichor V. Lol.
Thanks for watching! :)
So you mean the reason Providence teleported aboard the Contact Light was to chase Kur-Skan?
And thanks again for watching!
just goes to show, kids: communicate your wants and needs with people and keep your ego in check or you will end up fucking it all up
(also if someone has 10 pairs of glasses on and at least 7 syringes stuck in their hip maybe don't throw hands with them)
Like a lot of stories and mythologies, I think this is a demonstration of what happens when someone or something pushes hard to break balance. Mythrix wanted to hold onto cold rationality, while Providence wanted only soul and compassion. Both are needed for balance. When that balance shifts too far to one side, things get.... bad.
i would love to see a future video on the lore content of the void! there's a lot there and it's very interesting.
That's what I'm working on now! If I get enough free time and I sit down and focus on it, I can have it done by the end of the week! Otherwise, it'll be out some time next week!
Stay tuned! And thanks for watching! :)
Been saving this one. Got the game a while ago, and I can finally watch this video!
First Dead Cells and now this! Thanks for keeping me in mind for when you get new games, man! Appreciate the continued support! :)
Hope you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
Thanks, these videos really enhance the experience!
What an excellent video! I feel more compelled to play the game now that I know its history, thanks for the insight!
For the knowledge*
Actually my favorite ROR2 lore video, Nice stuff my dude, thanks :DDD
Happy to hear you enjoyed! Thanks so much for watching! :)
damn the story of cain and abel story goes crazy
A video thats more than just reading lore and is understandable, praise!!
This game will be a gem for forever
Just when I tight Friday couldn't get any better, you release another video essay about an album that comes with a free game!
This seriously made me laugh out loud. Hahaha.
You're absolutely right though: music to the game is absolutely fantastic, superb, amazing, and any other positive adjective you can think of.
Thanks for watching! :)
What a wild ride. Thanks for the video. That was very well explained
Cant wait for RoRR video and hopefully soon thr DLC for RoR2
Right after i just got into the Risk of Rain franchise, awesome!
Perfect timing for this then! Hope you enjoy and learn something from this! Thanks for taking the time to watch! I appreciate it
what's with the artifacts? are they gifts that providence gave his followers, like mithrix and his lunar items? the gate in the sky meadows clearly is of providence's design, going to Bulwark (of the Weak)'s Ambry. But the technology there...why are the codes on slabs, scattered across the planet? Who left that laptop there, going through the gate before the group of survivors arrived? What code did they put in, and what are they doing with the power they received?
Its probably just a gameplay thing
Isnt this just setting up for a rpg game about the world where the crew came from? That would go so hard
An amazing video, i loved it! Thank you for taking the time to make it
In my mind the "her" referenced is N'hakuna, in the item N'hakuna's lament, it talks more about her, and her sacrifice, and i (think) that its referenced in sacrificial dagger and other items that seem like they come from African/sub-Saharan cultures.
N’kuhana isn’t dead though, the sacrificial dagger and wetland aspect show people gaining real advantage from worship of N’kuhana and if she had sacrificed herself, it would be before mithrix was trapped
that was wonderfully written, well done squatch
I felt I struggled a bit for the writing of this one, but I'm happy to hear you enjoyed! Thanks so much for the kind words and thanks so much for watching! :)
Amazing video and insight, thanks for connecting the lore!
Thanks alot, gave me alot of insight! Just got the game on last december and have to add, one of the best games I've ever played! And that's not even the story itself included. Now this gives me even more curiosity, and respect for the makers to create such a fascinating story, that the player can take a part of!
One of my fav games ever covered by one of my favourite content creators, today is a good day.
Today is indeed a good day.
Hope you enjoyed, man! Thanks so much for watching and the continued support! :)
And his music is electric
Hey ,great video ,I loved it , looking forward to the DLC one , discovering you on that video so I'll go watch others ^^
is your story of how the brothers ended up on petrichor 5 speculation? i've never heard anyone mention it before, and i've always interpreted mithrix's attempt to escape petrichor as being driven by a desire to find other beings that he can call his peers and share his designs with, not by a desire to return home, and i think this makes sense because of its contrast to providence's attachment to "vermin" as well as mithrix's wording in "surely more of our kind awaits among the other worlds" from a moment, fractured's log implying that he is searching for any beings that the brothers could call equals, not necessarily their own race.
Short answer is Yes, absolutely, but I feel like it has ground to stand upon
If you're interested, I can give you the whole spiel, but it's going to be a wall of text that'll take me a while to type out. Just let me know.
Thanks for watching!
The best story teller in existence
Never that, but I'm happy to hear you enjoyed. Lol.
Thanks for watching! :)
very well and fluidly told. i was able to follow along easily and understand what was going on.
nice to see this game in your channel
Ok, but how do Goku, Tracer, and Soldier from TF2 fit into this?
Ok, now THIS is epic
Ayy! Hope you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
Yep, immediately fell in love with you and your videos, time to catch up on these gems, thank you!
Ayy! Thanks so much! Hope you've enjoyed what you've watched! :)
thank you so much for providing the story for this game as the DLC was just announced for console and I wanted a clear understanding of the story thank you⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
oh hey you again good to see you still making stuff
Hard to believe it's going on five years, but yeah, I'm still around. Lol.
Thanks for watching!
Please please please do audio books your voice is perfect for it and if you do let us know so we can listen
It’s something I considered in the past, but never really followed through with it. Just don’t have the time to do that, these videos, and everything else in my life!
If you’re interested, here’s a free audiobook I did for a very small author from around that time:
ua-cam.com/video/Pd2xF3TYw2o/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching!
Amazing video, perfect for my risk of rain d&d plans
This is exactly what I was looking for. great video!
I’m honestly of a mind to think that Mithrix and Providence are natives of Petrichor V!
I require more of this awesome content
There will be at least one more on the DLC of the game, but I don't have anything planned for the game after that. We'll see what happens though. If people are interested in seeing little videos about some of the lore, I can definitely make some!
Thanks for watching! :)
So Providence is a coward. Like, he never talked with his brother about how he felt, what he wanted? No, instead he just stranded him on the moon to avoid the confrontation.
So did the void crabs try to detain the first survivor that killed Providence and fail? That could be interesting
Bet you right now they tried to capture newt and he just destroyed them like it was nothing
1:45 nice shot
Oh yes! Loves this game and recall there was lore and story bits sprinkled but never could male it out what was it about
Well happy to hear that I could show you what's going on with the Story! Thanks for taking the time to watch and I hope you enjoyed! :)
Me: I need something new to play
Squatch: uploads a new video
Me: THANK THE GODS
I definitely recommend the game! It takes a bit to get used to, but it is insanely fun! Plus it's got an amazing soundtrack!
Thanks for watching!
Low subscriber count UA-camrs that analyze videogames and movies to the point where it could be classified as a documentary are what I live for.
Wouldn't say I "analyze" - just summarize the story that's given by the game - but there's several other videos like this on the channel! If you like this one, you might like the others!
Thanks for taking the time to watch (even if this is the only one you do watch). I really do appreciate it!
This is amazing!
Nice work!
wait.
isn't risk of rain just pikmin but without enslaving a species to do the fighting FOR you?
Is there any explanation for why Mithrix is big chilling a minutes walk away from a totally functional space shuttle? I mean, even if he can't use it, the dude's already a super being crafting giant mechs. I think he could probably figure out how to travel from the moon to the surface instead of waiting for millennia for his busted teleporter to get activated.
Yeah, but then we wouldn't have a final boss to fight... That's really the best explanation I've got. Lol.
You've made your way around, man! Appreciate you taking the time to watch all you have! :)
@@SquatchGamingChannel What can I say brother? You're putting out some high quality stuff. You've got me hooked now. Keep up the good work.
Так жалко Митрикса. Меня удивило насколько он терпеливый и целеустремленный
I do kinda prefer the item lore of the first game than the second game, its easier to read and i a whole different vibe.
