Near the end the RoR guys (and someone from Chuckelfish I believe) also came on and they said something to the effect of: "if you win/do good in this run now they are gonna publish this". Obviously the talks were probably already happening or had happened off stream but that was pretty sick. Time to rewatch that whole thing again, what a great time oh man
I think you shouldve at least mentioned the fact that the game was launched with a big trailer set exactly before the first big official news to borderlands 3 and the last borderlands 2 DLC at PAX east 2019 which was a GIGANTIC boost to popularity and honestly a genius move on gearbox's part in addition to the buy 1 get one free offer. This was a big reason why so many people that would usually not've paid too much attention to the game got hooked into it because everyone was waiting for a cool new looter shooter to play with their friends and guess what? They have to wait a little longer for BL3 but hey here is something to last you until then. I love ROR2 but i think when talking about its success this headstart has to be mentioned
I audibly screamed "nnooooOOOOOOOOOO" when I heard Gearbox is taking over the Risk of Rain IP. I honestly couldn't have ever asked for more from Hopoo than what we got in RoR2, so that will be my ultimate experience with the series. Gearbox (and more pressingly Randy Pitchford) will slaughter the soul of this series, I guarantee it. May time prove me wrong in the end but the moment they replace Chris as the composer, take off Commando's helmet, or make Artificer talk, you will know what kind of mistake was made here. Despite that, much love goes out to Hopoo Games and I'm looking forward to what they can bring out of the ether next.
what the fuck are you talking about that's the most delusional thing I've read all month. Slaughtering the soul? Guarantees? Replacing the composer? Taking off helmets? Giving them voices? _What the fuck are you talking about?_ Where do you think this is all coming from, if not from your own mind????
Wonderful video! Always interesting to learn about development in games like this! Especially a game so close to me 23:50 though quick correction, the DLC SoTV was released in March 2022. The anniversary update was the one released in 2021.
Chris Christodoulou on the music for these games, i dont think ever in the history of gaming, has there ever been a better idea hatched. He absolutely shreds every track he did. especially The song "The Rain" LOVE IT

I remember the Early Access days, watching Risk of Rain 2 content creators on youtube min-maxing different build tests, just to give feedback to the devs. I barely understood all the multipliers & logic in the game on how it all affected certain balancing changes, but it was fascinating to see such a dedicated community to help make the game feel balanced as much as possible.
I remember seeing RoR2 get announced and thought it was an April fools joke, I couldn't wrap my head around how this incredible sidescroller roguelike would ever work in 3D then RoR2 came out and it's one of the greatest games I've ever played

Dude, I love this game so much! I bought it to 5 friends of mine to coerce them to play with me. I love the mistery, the pieces of lore, the soundtrack. Damn what a masterpiece. I felt betrayed by hoopoo when they sold the IP to gearbox though!
Lets be fair too them. They were offered LIFE changing money to be split between 4 people, and they have said that after SotV that they were done with the game. They wanted to move to a different IP, and that money would help A LOT. Anyone would have done it.
Here after the release of Risk of Rain Returns. Such a phenomenal revitalization of the original, and a monumental milestone signifying how far Hopoo has come. Can’t wait to see what they will do in the future, and I hope Gearbox properly carries on the Risk of Rain IP.
Yeah, as someone who has modded that game quite a bit, I can see how it was originally built to let you play as enemies The entire character system is modularly built to easily allow for stuff like that
@@343JustMe Dude, the game had game breaking bugs, for console players it was unplayable for 3 days; one of the bugs deleted your save file. I'm glad they patched stuff, but the way the game was released is completely unacceptable, Gearbox or not.
@@hikarikouno no I completely agree for console it was literally unplayable and for PC it was at the very least unacceptable but people are treating it like the end of a game. There were game breaking bugs but that shit happens for renewing a codebase. As someone who played 20 hours of the new update I personally don't think it was nearly as bad as anyone made it seem to be. Streamers played the game just fine and so did I.
I was just browsing games and stumbled upon Risk of Rain Returns and as a 2d, rouge-like, metroidvania, platformer player, I immediately fell inlove just after seeing the visuals and the mechanics. A new game to enjoy while also waiting for Silksong hahahaa
What's also cool about these games is that the mod scene is just gigantic, and RoR2 has about two times the items and three times the amount of characters made just by the community. And most of them are an absolute blast to play.
15:21 haha omg my art teacher from highschool actually made this concept art he also made concept art for sundered grove, clay apothecary, larva, parent, minishrum, lunar chimera wisp, lunar chimera golem, shatterspleen, molten perforator, mired urn, and an unreleased warden survivor pretty neat stuff
Any other miners here? I love how the miner can be in the middle of the fray like HAN-D without any healing skills. Hell, as far as I know, the miner has got the highest DPS for any characters normal attack.
A quick question Glen, do you have any criteria on which games you cover on your channel? like: not covering unreleased/early access titles, games you haven't played, maybe not bother with web/flash games?
I only cover games that have been fully released so indeed no early access titles. I’ll probably also never cover flash or mobile games. Most of the time, I’ve played the game I decide to cover, but there’s been exceptions like Among Us for example. Sometimes I decide to cover something like Pokémon because I’m really passionate about it. The most important criteria is that the game simply has an interesting development history.
Thank god they did the BoGo campaign for ROR2's launch, thanks to that I was able to get my entire friend group into the game despite me being the only one who had even heard of Risk of Rain, we're all buying RoR Returns Day 1!
At least it's in hands. If you had a choice between gearbox working on it (and the developers getting tons of money to help with future projects), or nobody working on ror2 at all (and the developers not getting anything), which would you choose?
@@godlyvex5543In that case, I would much prefer the latter - it winds up in public domain, meaning anyone can work on it. Being in hands is not assuring. It is a gambit. Particularly Gearbox's hands. Since the 2010s, Gearbox has yet to find a new reason that can convince me to restore my trust with them. I have not trusted them since the DNF and Borderlands controversies, and ugly-arse Pitchford's dirty antics. I truly fear for the ROR franchise.
@@OnyeNacho No, that isn't how public domain works. Just because the developer stops working on it doesn't mean it just "winds up in public domain". And what exactly is the downside of gearbox working on it? Yes, they may make a worse product later, but that doesn't mean the risk of rain you like stops existing. I still love borderlands 1 and 2, and just because the later games suck doesn't mean I can't go back and play them. The difference is, I got to SEE that the future games would have been bad, had they been made. Because they were made. And they were bad. But if they hadn't been made, I would've still been yearning for a borderlands 3 that I wouldn't have liked. You could argue that this yearning is a positive emotion, but... ehh... I'd rather just get it over with, personally. You could argue that had they not made borderlands 3, they could've worked on something else... But that's exactly what's happening with hopoo. They aren't making risk of rain 3. They're making something else. Gearbox might make risk of rain 3, and it might suck, but like... I don't know. I'm just having a hard time envisioning this as anything other than a win, as a fan of hopoo's games. Hopoo, the developer that made the games we like, managed to get gearbox to give them money in exchange for not working on the risk of rain franchise anymore... which is something they were already going to do! Hopoo got free money! Not only that, I hear they were commissioned to make risk of rain returns, which they were already going to do, so that's more free money. Now we get the... well, I was going to say best of both worlds, but it's more like we got the best of one world and the okay-est of another world, but that still adds up to more than 1, so to me it's still a good deal. Oh, also rancid pitchford doesn't manage the game side of gearbox anymore, I hear. So that's at least 1 point in gearbox's favor, which is better than nothing.
@@godlyvex5543 All I can say to this is, I just hope Gearbox does not turn ROR into another live service gambleware mess, like many A3 games have succumb to thus far. There is a reason I very rarely touch AAA games anymore. I usually focus on A2 and A1 (indie) games nowadays.
I enjoyed the video, but I wished you'd played some of the music (at an audible level). You showed lots of visuals but didn't let us experience the music!
As much as I love RoR1&2 and Hopoo, I’m still pretty salty about the ridiculously long time us console players have waited to receive the latest RoR2 update. From what I understand, it wasn’t Hopoo’s fault but that of the studio tasked with the port and some unforeseen issues they encountered. I could be wrong on the exact details so don’t quote me on that. I got even more frustrated when they decided to announce the new RoR game being developed before giving us ANY news about the missing update. They eventually apologized and gave us an explanation about what happened but it was a bad look imo. Now it’s been over two years since the update was released on PC and we’re still waiting. I don’t want to sound like an entitled whiny gamer but I still think the whole thing could have been handled better.
@@moster1539 it's been nearly 2 years at this point (or closer to 2) and I also clearly state that I understand that it wasn't necessarily Hopoo's fault. Doesn't change the fact that all us console players are very annoyed over the situation. I'm guessing you're not one of us but I'm sure you'd understand if you put yourself in our shoes for a moment. I'm not being unreasonable. I still adore the franchise and by extension Hopoo for creating such a great series but this whole mess, however unforeseen or unintended is still a big disappointment in my opinion. My trust is unfortunately shaken and makes me weary of supporting future titles on PC or console for that reason.
Oh this made me more excited to play Risk of Rain 2 eventually! At the moment I can't play because my notebook isn't strong enough to handle the game well (even more with the time is difficulty mechanic) after I update or change to a better system and have some spare money I will buy it to experience this game (and add some more songs to my playlist since I really like progressive rock)
the devs are nice people :) (i hope to see some usage of the woolie interview in here, like the inspiration from... was it league of legends??) also, to people who dont know RoR too much, the lore is actually surprisingly great and has lots of hidden details despite being... mostly made up on the spot :p the 2 games have an interesting story they tell together
3:06 I'm lost. How is the scaling different? If the power value is 4 which number are we multiplying the health and damage with? Is it like if we decide the base is 10 and the power value is 3. We calculate 2 ^3=8 and then multiply health by 8. At the same time take log2(3)= 1.something. And then multiply that result with damage. Or is something entirely different happening??? P.S if it is this way, wouldn't the game get out of control quickly with unkillable enemies? I never played the game so I don't know.
still salty they never added mouse support to the original game. Kinda the only reason i haven't played it, but i've played Risk of Rain 2 quite a lot (and got Returns 2 days ago. It's pretty noice).

The Vods still exist and/or are downloadable, the RoR part is on 20h09m25s on the Part 4 twitch vod.
Time to rewatch that whole thing again, what a great time oh man
Excellent mini-doc as always, Glen. Thanks for doing what you do!
My pleasure, glad to hear you liked it Ryan!
Risk of Rain 3 is gonna be in 4D.
Your videos are top-tier, always love to see how you adapt the editing style to each game you decide to cover
Thank you very much! It’s great fun for myself to come up with new ways to edit the videos so I’m glad people like it :D
I can't wait for the remake but I also can't wait to see what new games they bring to the table.
Chris won't be working on any more RoR content after RoRR, though. He's been working with Hopoo all this time, not with Gearbox
what the fuck are you talking about
that's the most delusional thing I've read all month. Slaughtering the soul? Guarantees? Replacing the composer? Taking off helmets? Giving them voices? _What the fuck are you talking about?_ Where do you think this is all coming from, if not from your own mind????
It's hilarious and insanely sad at the same time that your (and others') worst nightmares eventually came true
Now my boys work for Valve :) they triumphed in life.
Wonderful video! Always interesting to learn about development in games like this! Especially a game so close to me
23:50 though quick correction, the DLC SoTV was released in March 2022. The anniversary update was the one released in 2021.
Much appreciated! And dammit, mixed up my update dates :P
Chris Christodoulou on the music for these games, i dont think ever in the history of gaming, has there ever been a better idea hatched. He absolutely shreds every track he did. especially The song "The Rain" LOVE IT
Stellar video, as usual, Glen! Always look forward to your videos and you've introduced me to so many amazing indie game gems. Keep up the great work, my friend!
Thank you for all the kind words, Brett! And thank you very much for the donations, really really appreciate that! More videos are coming :D
Glad to hear! I listen to a lot of your content on my bike rides then watch later. Your videos have really good flow and editing and you clearly put in a lot of work into research. I first found you when I was playing Stardew Valley and happened upon your video about Eric Barone and the games development. Appreciate your hard work and look forward to more content!
Ur so underrated man! With this amazing content quality you really deserve 10mil by this point. As always, keep up the outstanding work!
Thank you very much for the kind words!
I'm so in love with this game and super appreciate the development deep-dive! Really great to learn more abt this masterpiece
Glad to hear it!
Hope the money was good and they are living the dream cause gearbox fd it up bad
Don't worry about that they shutting down as they have now been hired by Valve, easily the best game company to be an employee of. They fed their fans for the wolves and are living the dream
4:53 in risk of rain 2 I’ve had so many enemies spawn at once and then immediately die in a triple loop run it heavily lagged my series x. All part of the fun.
Triple loop? Bro I can't even do one loop
@@zieftheknight6061 that was the best loader run I’ve ever had. I had a setup where everything that went near me died instantly through a stupid combo of many ukes, much movement, unstable Tesla and several shaped glass
Ok so listen, what if we put Deadbolt in space, but with no doors and skills?
perfect timing XD as I'm sitting at my desk working on my own roguelike game this video shows up :) about one of my fav roguelikes ever. Thank you o/
My pleasure, good luck with your roguelike game!
Looking forward to Risk of Rain 3 in 4D!! Great video btw.
@@teddybearkiller1360 Fair enough. Would love to see more characters and stages. Lets hope gearbox keep up the good work.
@@marcosousa4029hopefully gearbox will release survivors of the void on console
I still remember when ROR 2 came out with the buy one get 1 for a friend in 2019 early access
Here after the release of Risk of Rain Returns. Such a phenomenal revitalization of the original, and a monumental milestone signifying how far Hopoo has come. Can’t wait to see what they will do in the future, and I hope Gearbox properly carries on the Risk of Rain IP.
Yeah, as someone who has modded that game quite a bit, I can see how it was originally built to let you play as enemies
The entire character system is modularly built to easily allow for stuff like that
iirc they work for valve now as of recent.
These guys are geniuses man
"Super Fantasy Kingdom" might get interesting for you. Its an Indiegame pretty early in its developement but its got a demo already.
watching this after gearbox bought the rights and damn i miss them
When I saw early gifs of this game about 2 years before it’s release. I was already sold. The story behind this game just makes me like it even more.
this aged well, gearbox truly ruined the game 😢
No they didn't
So tired of people saying this. It’s still the same game, and 80% of the bugs got patched today
@@loch1694 for real, people are exaggerating so hard and if it wasn't for the gearbox name the reactions wouldn't be NEARLY as bad as it is
@@343JustMe Dude, the game had game breaking bugs, for console players it was unplayable for 3 days; one of the bugs deleted your save file.
As much as I love the ror games having played all 3 now I still wish deadbolt got some more recognition. :(
they may have dodged a bullet with not letting chucklefish publish
Genuinely who wouldn't sell their up for that kind of money, like that's life changing money right there
Really cool to see you cover risk of ran o7. Love the game. Nice video
Thanks, glad to hear you like it!
My favorite gamedev related youtuber making a video on my favorite game
They invited Chris...
...and his music was electric
idk why anyone is confident gearbox will handle this well theyve basically run borderlands into the dirt
How many times is the thumbnail gonna change it's making me trip out ;-;
great video! I didn't know a lot of this about the development of the first game, and it was cool to see the unused sprites.
Thank, glad to hear you liked it!
I was just browsing games and stumbled upon Risk of Rain Returns and as a 2d, rouge-like, metroidvania, platformer player, I immediately fell inlove just after seeing the visuals and the mechanics. A new game to enjoy while also waiting for Silksong hahahaa
Providence 3D model??? We getting his story as DLC maybe???
The success of those three make me so very happy, because Risk of Rain 1 & 2 are my favorite games!
What's also cool about these games is that the mod scene is just gigantic, and RoR2 has about two times the items and three times the amount of characters made just by the community. And most of them are an absolute blast to play.
Its so cool to see two guys with 100 dollars make one of the most replayable and satisfying games ever.
Risk of Rain 2 is one of the best games ive ever played, I just want more of it forever
Damn!! Another game that's been on my list but never played. Definitely need to get on with it. This sounds awesome!! I love the shift from 2D to 3D!
I remember playing and loving the free demo of RoR, came at such an amazing time in the indie dev scene
This channel always impresses with the quality it has, I remember when you had way fewer subscribers
I remember those days too! Still can’t quite believe how the channel got here, but I couldn’t be happier.
@@ThatGuyGlen Very well deserved!
Great video, I was really hoping to see some sort of mention for a Risk of rain 3 but since they sold it to gearbox. Who knows what will happen.
I would absolutely love another 2d risk of rain T-T
I would consider Returns another 2d version.
Lets go another great video! Excited to dive into this one!
Great video. Very informative and good editing.
Matthew Griffin would later go on to manage marketing and PR for Team Cherry, creators of Hollow Knight and Silksong.
Chris Chrstodolou mentioned automatic W
Tldr: MONEY
Thank god they did the BoGo campaign for ROR2's launch, thanks to that I was able to get my entire friend group into the game despite me being the only one who had even heard of Risk of Rain, we're all buying RoR Returns Day 1!
Next the making of roller coaster tycoon and how it was Made in assembly
Having a lot of fun with the thumbnails and titles i see
Risk of Rain sold the IP to Gearbox? Randy Pitchford's Trashbox of ALL companies?!?
In better hands my ass!
R.I.P. Risk of Risk.
Well, these comments aged well.
Rest in pepsi, risk of pain
I enjoyed the video, but I wished you'd played some of the music (at an audible level). You showed lots of visuals but didn't let us experience the music!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! The whole soundtrack is on UA-cam so I figured you can just listen to it that way :D
Alot of the unused assets are in the mode RoR:Starstorm, is it semi-official, did Hopoo just release the sprites and stuff?
By far my 2 favourite games and the best rogue likes ever made
As much as I love RoR1&2 and Hopoo, I’m still pretty salty about the ridiculously long time us console players have waited to receive the latest RoR2 update.
It's been 1 year not 2 and hopoo has never been in charge of the console ports
At the moment I can't play because my notebook isn't strong enough to handle the game well (even more with the time is difficulty mechanic) after I update or change to a better system and have some spare money I will buy it to experience this game (and add some more songs to my playlist since I really like progressive rock)
the devs are nice people :)
(i hope to see some usage of the woolie interview in here, like the inspiration from... was it league of legends??)
also, to people who dont know RoR too much, the lore is actually surprisingly great and has lots of hidden details despite being... mostly made up on the spot :p
the 2 games have an interesting story they tell together
Huge shout out to Chris Christodolou
Thanks for subtitles! (Спасибо за субтитры!)
always enjoy your videos thanks for making them
My pleasure, glad to hear you enjoy them!
Why did the thumbnail on the left change?
3:06 I'm lost. How is the scaling different? If the power value is 4 which number are we multiplying the health and damage with?
Is it like if we decide the base is 10 and the power value is 3. We calculate 2 ^3=8 and then multiply health by 8. At the same time take log2(3)= 1.something. And then multiply that result with damage.
Or is something entirely different happening???
P.S if it is this way, wouldn't the game get out of control quickly with unkillable enemies? I never played the game so I don't know.
Inspiring as always!!
gearbox should port risk of rain 2 to the quest 3. would be instant vr game of the year. the vr mod makes it one of the best vr games even today
you can already play risk of rain 2 in VR with mods.
I can't watch this right now, can I get a TLDR now and watch the video later?
Risk of Rain 2 is one of the best games ever made
still salty they never added mouse support to the original game. Kinda the only reason i haven't played it, but i've played Risk of Rain 2 quite a lot (and got Returns 2 days ago. It's pretty noice).
