On the one hand, the tactical depth provided by the older games was something I wish we still had, but on the other, the diversity of factions and units seen in the Total Warhammer series is something I've never seen any other game come close to. I wish we could have it both ways, but as someone whose first Total War game was Medieval 1, I must admit that the Warhammer series has been my favorite. Here's hoping that CA gives it the love it deserves.

This is actually wholesome to me. I have a feeling that the general is a good commander and decent leader, always ensuring those beneath him are paid and their wellbeing safeguarded. Its just that he's completely insane. The soldiers, knowing this, just played along for their beloved commander, even though some of them were freaking out.
Also the strange part is him being this insane dose not mean he is not capable to lead them. I mean, he knows where he is, he knows what is he doing. So except for few crazy talk he might be actually a capable strategist.
And/Or he is really good at his job. "The man was as mad as a hare in spring thaw. Sure the AI isn't the best, but how many RTS's actually do even nowadays? It's worst aspect to me is the diplomacy, but that's a pretty small complaint looking at the game as a whole. Even then, still better than Rome 1's. It isn't perfect, but it's aged remarkably well.

Many of the new games like Rome 2, Three Kingdoms, and Troy have great gameplay mechanics, historical accuracy, non-generic playable factions, and capture the politics of the time periods better. It is unfair to simply rate them low because the speeches got cut. And even in some of those games you can hear speeches during deployment (minus the cinematic).
In all the years I've played M2TW, I never got the insanity trait let alone even knew of its existence until now. 20 years later and I learn something new😂
I only played this to the point of unlocking the Americas once, and by that point the king I had was completely mad. I loved the role play aspect that the ‘mad king’ suddenly decided that he and 10 full stacks should sail out into uncharted waters that held nothing or would be far too vast to reach the other side of Asia. And then the crazy man gets validated by finding the New World
Scottish clans did actually have fairy banners, theres still at least one left on display in a museum. Supposedly a supernatural gift to old clan chiefs that grants victory whenever unveiled in battle
