    Congratulations on Fred the shed.
    The vise appears to be a Parkinson's No3 from their "Handy" range. Their Vises (note the spelling) were absolute quality back in the day & well worth doing a bit or research on. The "Handy" range were the non quick release models.
    Nice gift from Dad !

    I prefer sympathetic restorations where the age still shows rather than an "as new" finish. The oil dispenser is about right. A good little video Harley.

    Nice workshop, I put up a 6 by 4 in my parents garden when I was 15 (45 years ago), I put an add in the local paper and started fixing bicycles. Your first car can't be far away now!!!

    I prefer the restoration on the oil pump. There is nothing wrong wth that green paint so just oil it occasionally and it will be fine.😊

    Great to see that Ned the Shed is no longer alone and that you have been able to include some workspace in Fred the Shed. I wonder how long though, it will be before Ted the Shed will be needed for future aquisitions? Your Mum looks like an expert on the Chrismas mince pies. I would have cheerfully taken care of those for you!! It is New Year's morning as I type this so I want to wish you and your family a very Happy New Year, may 2024 be a great year for you all.

    Well done Harley. You thoroughly deserve Fred the Shed, after all your hard work producing the interesting videos you do for us. Your collection is growing nicely, as is your confidence and knowledge of all things motor related. Great watching you, and looking forward to your 2024 offerings. Well done to have a Ned extension into Fred to house some of your ever growing collection. As it is as yet unpainted I assume that will be a fine weather project later in the year to complete the symmetry of the monument to youthful enthusiasm and growing expertise, as well as the wonderful father/son shared love of all things motorised. May you both continue to bring us nostalgic looks into the past glories of vehicles. I have no champagne, and the small problem of distance to overcome, but may I smash (gently!) a metaphorical bottle of it over Fred to launch its success? I also hope that we will also hear of academic success to run in tandem with your super projects!

    Splendid video Harley! Your enthusiasm is so refreshing to watch and restores my faith in human nature. How about a Ted or Ed on the other side of Ned? A man can never have too many sheds. Re. your question on restoration or not, I think the oily rag approach is definitely preferable to an over-restored item that looks as if it has never been used and has no history. Mind you, I bet your Mum's mince pies didn't have much history! Have a wonderful 2024!

    Paint the new shed in old engine oil, my shed is 24 years old and good as new, that cheap wood absorbes oil like a sponge and oil repells water. It's an old school thing, shed will turn a lovely colour and not look like sore thumb 😊👍🇮🇪

    Looks like you have been busy through the Christmas holidays.
    Very pleased for you as you have worked hard on your channel.
    With regards level of restoration :- I renovate old tools ,mostly axes.If they they are real old historic pieces I give them a gentle clean polish and oiling as they will not be used.
    I vary the level of restoration on the later tools depending on age and if they are for practical use or display .
    Now you have Fred perhaps you could have a go at reviving a really rusty old item, it is great fun.
    Wishing you and your family a very happy new year.

    Dear Fred the Shed, welcome to your new life at CarTraction. Harley, I like the oily rag approach to restoration. I am not keen on crusty wrecks or the fully/over restored approach. I was itching to clean up the green leather desk top haha - would it restore, what do you think?

    • @CarTractionvids
      @CarTractionvids  6 місяців тому +2

      Maybe, I'm saving my WD40 at the moment!

  • @KiwiStag74
    @KiwiStag74 6 місяців тому +1

    A rather impressive collection of tools and memorabilia there, mate. That has to be a few years' worth of bargaining and no mistake, eh? I fear that Ned the Shed is going to need an extension in the near future just to keep up with it and the work being performed in Fred the Shed. Maybe it will require the addition of Marge the Garage??
    As to whether I restore something classic to pristine or preserve it with its patina, it depends on the item. If it is looking pretty sad and I'm just going to use it for display and if it would look good with a tart-up, I will give it a full-on paint job to make it look the best it can. Otherwise, it gets a sympathetic restoration, making sure to 'age' any new paintwork to suit the area it is going on. I figure if it's never going to be used for its intended purpose, then why not make it look its best...but there are some items that no matter how much you want to dress them up, they would not look right with an 'as new' finish given their age and the work they have done / battle scars they have accumulated over the years, so those are the ones that get the sympathetic resto mentioned.
    However, if I am going to use an old tool in my garage, then it gets the 'preservation' resto - ie: a going over with the wire brush and (sometimes) fine steel wool to knock the rust off and then the oily rag treatment. I like what you showed a few months back with the light dusting of black paint and then 'wearing' it a bit, but for tools I use, the paint comes off again fairly quickly, so I've just stayed with the oily rag. Even my more modern tools get a wipe-down after use to clean the worst off, but there is still a very thin film of oil on them. Some of my older spanners are perfect for getting in where modern ones won't - eg: between the radiator and the lower front pulley on a Triumph 2500S in order to move the crank to turn the cam to open the points in the distributor for periodic setting / cleaning. Modern ring or ring / open ended spanners have a slight angle on them and there is just no room to use a kinked 15/16ths - let alone a socket - on the nut, so my 1940s narrow flat steel 15/16ths / 1" is perfect for that. It's one my Dad found in the gutter on his way to school in the 1950s and kept right through all the years he spent building modified and race engines. I found it while going through his garage after he passed and although it's not in a set, it went in with the others I was keeping. Every time I use it I thank him for finding it that day as nothing else I have will fit!
    I have a couple of old bronze spirit-fuelled blow torches that I still use, but I gave them a clean and a polish up. I sprayed their tanks with clear-coat to try to stop the bronze oxidising and it has worked except where the white spirit has come in contact with it, so would be a good thing for preserving any brass or bronze item you were just going to display as it saves all that polishing time that's needed every so often! I put clearcoat on an old washing copper that my Mum had from her Grandparents' farmhouse - after I polished it of course - and it's stayed looking fantastic for 20 years now.
    One other little cleaning tip - your WD40 is a perfect item for loosening up the accumulated oily / dusty sludge that ends up on old mechanical things. Carb / Brake Cleaner is another great dissolver of crud and faster than WD40, but tends to be a little harsher on the paint as its ethanol- or acetone-based, so needs to be wiped off any painted surfaces again quickly, so I'd only use it on unpainted surfaces until you become familiar with how it does things. You have to be particularly careful with a metal-bladed screwdriver not to damage any paint underneath, so to save myself some anxiety over this point, I found a better use for the plastic knives you get with some takeaways. I filed / ground off any serrated edge on the utensil and then used that as a scraper. Even a small sliver of wood is a better scraper than a screwdriver for the same reason - and you can hone it down to a point if you need to get into tight corners (or use toothpicks). I learned the hard way about screwdrivers by scraping paint off places I really didn't want it gone, so just thought I'd pass the above info along for what it's worth.
    I'll stop now as I have written a veritable book for you to read! All the best with your expanding hobby and don't let anyone give you a bit of stick for having two sheds (an old Monty Python reference your Dad will probably know about!).
