  • Possibly the most exciting video on UA-cam, this upload documents the many exciting changes afoot with the legendary shed (recently christened Ned the Shed), including a repaint, some signs, a Jaguar XJ grille and more!
    Ned was looking a tad dishevelled after many many years stood outside exposed to all that mother nature could throw at him, crying out for a dose of TLC.
    We heeded this call and hastily reached for the screwdrivers and sanding blocks in order to prepare Ned for his new coat, also preparing ourselves for some DIY.
    Once the repaint was finished, we rewarded Ned's years of service with a delightful selection of signs that now adorn the smoothly finished exterior, plus exclusive footage of a wonderful Jaguar XJ12 grille clean-up!
    If you enjoyed watching this truly fantastic video then please let me know in the comments, and check out the channel homepage for more automotive videos. Please also remember to subscribe as it helps out a ton.
    Thanks for watching!

    Nothing better than sitting in a shed, full of all the auto jumble you have collected over the years, and drinking a nice mug of tea!

    Great video mate. People come to a channel for two reasons: the first is the content or subject matter and the second is because we become invested in the presenter. Now that you're putting yourself more and more in front of the camera I'll be surprised if your subscription numbers don't increase. 👍👍

    And , yeah , definitely need a bigger garage - like a Barn, or something .

    Cool.
    But the only thing with black, in Summer sun, can get pretty hot inside.
    I don’t know what your summers are.
    But here, black can raise temperatures up 30 degrees [ F ].
    Great job. Good video.

    great video, Harley. Love the black on the shed, I could never do that here in the Mojave. It's regularly over 120F. Looks great, and it turned it into gallery space for great automotive art. I like the Harley's garage sign idea. I was in the sign business for a few years, a minute ago in the 90's. Go to a sign place and have them make you a pounce pattern of a cool typestyle on paper. You can just chalk it on the black wall, and paint it straight on. Then it'll really look like an old garage.
    Inspiring video. I guess I'm digging out the old license plates.

    This got me motivated to do a bit of work on my barn which is also wood and also black. In my case it is painted with old engine oil but does need another coat every few years. it's a pity your shed was ever done with that blue paint as the flaking was inevitable. Years ago it would have been done with creosote but I think that stuff has been outlawed.

    That was excellent Harley. I was 'dubious' about painting Ned black, but in fact it turned out rather well. Your presentation of videos is getting better every time, and this one had plenty of variety. Well done and a Happy Easter to the Jones Family. Take care :-)

    Your shed is looking good, mate. That black works a treat on the weathered timber. Us petrolheads like collecting things that illustrate the history and longevity of our passion, so don't ever be ashamed of picking up the odd thing here or there to expand it.....as long as it doesn't a) consume all of your time, b) consume all of your cash and c) consume all of the space in your home to the point where you have to move several things just to put the kettle on in the morning! Also, I don't think you'll have a problem going for your license in a few years' time - you seem to have mastered the delicacy of the clutch rather well already....and that is something that will stump a lot of people in a few years - heck, I know people already who are scared of the manual gearboxes in my cars because (apparently) they are "very complicated to use"! I've offered to teach them - and these are people in their 30s who have always driven an automatic - but they have declined my invitation with a huge shudder. They really don't know what they are missing, do they, eh? The magical sounds of the gears in the likes of that little Standard are just one thing on a very long list that only us Classic Car boffins will ever understand...... All the best from here in New Zealand

    • @richardsealey3626
      @richardsealey3626 Рік тому +4

      If you pass your driving test in an automatic car in Great Britain, you are excluded from driving a car with a manual gearbox...........If you want to drive a manual car, you have to take another test, in a manual car..............It pays to take your test in a manual car as then you can drive either!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @KiwiStag74
      @KiwiStag74 Рік тому +1

      @@richardsealey3626 - yep, that's how NZ was when the new progressive licenses came into being in the mid-late 80s. We now have a Learner's license (which is a written test and you must have this before getting behind the wheel legally on public roads to learn) which is in force for minimum of 6 months and max of 3 years to sit the next stage, which is the Restricted license. If you go past the 3-year anniversary, you start again. The Restricted license (a practical test in which you demonstrate you are competent to drive a vehicle and obey the driving laws), is in force for minimum 18 months (12 months if you do a Defensive Driving Course) and max of 5 years. You can only drive during the hours of 6am to 10pm and if anyone else is in the car with you, then a fully licensed driver must be in the passenger's front seat. During this time, it used to be that you could learn to master a manual gearbox (with a Full licensed driver in the car) so that you can sit your Full license in a manual if you took your Restricted in an auto, because if you sat your Full license in an auto, then that's all you could drive. Between the time of my eldest getting her Learners two years ago and now, they changed it. Now, it does not matter what you take your Restricted or Full license in, you can drive either......which I think is stupid. How can you expect to be able to drive a manual if you have never had any experience in one? Sure - you can be taught, but who is going to be the judge of whether you can do this AND deal with all the other stuff at the same time? This little country of mine has made some weird changes to rules (car import rules and regs, modifications to standard vehicles along with the road code ones I am finding out about) recently and very few of them seem to make sense or indicate that the people writing them have any grip on reality. I mean, they now require a vehicle to go through a $600 certification process if you want to change the wheels and tyres to any size that did not come with the car as standard fitment. So, you take your 1978 Mini and want to put a set of 13" wheels on that came off a wrecked 1990s Mini that had them standard - nope. That requires certification, mate. Same car? Not according to the rules in their strictest interpretation. Common sense is not an option available to the Warrant of Fitness (aka: your MoT) inspector either, because if he ignores it and the car is at fault in an accident (regardless if the wheels / tyres caused it), then he could go for a skate (or at least be given a huge fine) because the wheels were on there. Just stupid......

      @CarTractionvids  Рік тому +2

      Thanks - I actually prefer and enjoy more to drive a manual and I think that will stick with me - it's as if you're more in control and it's more satisfying IMO!

    • @KiwiStag74
      @KiwiStag74 Рік тому +1

      @@CarTractionvids - EXACTLY my friend, exactly. Chopping down a cog before a corner and then accelerating through it with the car hugging the apex, is one of the most satisfying driving experiences ever. Being able to change down and accelerate without waiting for an electronic nanny to decide what gear to tell the gearbox to select is so much more a true driver's preference, because YOU tell the CAR what you want instead of the CAR telling YOU what you can have....and often getting it wrong. With an auto - even if you use the flappy-paddle system or move it through the gears on the stick - just isn't the same. With some modern autos, even if you hold it in gear but then dare to go within 500rpm of the red line, it still changes gear for you even though you have not told it to. Where's the fun there? Putting your foot down in an auto, you feel the car slowly accelerate, so you give it more pedal and it THEN decides to chop you down two gears and scream before thinking to itself "er....no, that wasn't right" and shifting you up one. Meanwhile, you have been run over by the 18-wheel Kenny coming the other way. With a manual box, you can use the gears to slow you down quicker too. You can also drive a car home without a clutch by starting the car in gear and using the revs to change up or down without graunching them. If you are stuck somewhere in busy traffic and the car will not start, you can still crank it in gear to get it off the road. Modern manual boxes have a safety switch making you press the clutch pedal to the floor to start the engine, but while this seems like a safety addition, it takes away the last two abilities I just mentioned, so how much safer is it really? The first thing I do before I turn the key is check the box is in neutral (I have a Stag, a 2500S and a Mini). It was part of the training I received from my parents many years ago and I have only been caught out once and that was because a mate said he'd left the car in neutral and it wasn't and I hadn't checked. Never forgot to do so since - regardless of what anyone said to me! Sounds like you are a true petrolhead, mate. My suggestion to you is not to buy anything too modern (say post-1985) as your first car.....or if you do (for the economical and safety aspects), ensure you also have a classic that you can drive so that you can get your fix of that enjoyment that you get behind the wheel of something that has no "driver aids". All the best

      @@KiwiStag74 Yes B roads and a sports car could never be the same. For a first car I'll probably have to have something new for practicalities but I will still be a petrolhead and drive an old one whenever I can!

    Love the well-organised shed (you must have OCD!), its pristine refurbishment, and to learn, as a Jag freak myself who once owned an XK140 DHC and Mk2 that your grandfather was equally afflicted! And I hope you can also give us a more in-depth review of the Standard and the family's other vehicles; I also had a BRG Mk 1 MX 5 like your mum, all of which seems to appears to be yet another example of a classic car mad motoring family.
