    You guys @ AV Nirvana really need to do a proper 'Beginners Guide'. One where you actually record measuring & using REW in a real HT setup & while going through the step by step process with 'pause & explain' kind of tutorial. THAT WOULD BE OF GREAT HELP TO MANY !!!!!
    Hope you guys consider doing one. Cheers !

      That would be really helpful. A step by step of using REW to take measurements and then what changes to a system need to be made then remeasure to understand the improvements

      Audio Judgement has a tutorial on UDEMY that explains step by step how to test floor speakers, crossovers,etc. Get it when it's on sale, I got it for $13 each class.

    Matt, when I finished my basement I applied double drywall on the ceiling and a rockwool (stone wool fire insulation that also works a sound insulation). When I played my system upstairs, I was shocked by the difference in sound. Does that qualify as room treatment that's 1 foot deep? It's behind the wall and it's preventing the basement from interacting with the upstairs room.

    Hi Sir,
    Wish someone/Master can help me
    1. using REW to run "Measure" and mute the REW test signal, and then DUT play white noise. does it make sense for measuring?
    2. based on item1, the measurement results are different with running RTA. the level from RTA is much lower than running "Measure" as item1. does it make sense?

    Interesting that he says take multiple recordings with small placement changes in the listening position but then says don't bother taking readings of the left and right speakers seperately or even both. Small variations in a room can cause fairly big differences in left and right speaker readings. In fact most of the well known studio acoustic engineers often insist on multiple speaker readings but not multi positional readings, unless you have say a listening couch or something similar. 🤔

  • @jeffreysbrother
    @jeffreysbrother Рік тому +1

    why is it recommended to test using the output of only one speaker?
    This method has been recommended elsewhere, so this is how I conducted my first rounds of tests. However, despite finding a more ideal monitoring/listening position--according to these measurements--I was hearing very inconsistent bass response in some music I was familiar with.
    It wasn't until I started testing with both speakers that I was able to see the huge and wide peak around 60 Hz that I was hearing.
    So just to clarify, my experience seems to suggest that using both speakers to play back the measurement sweep might produce more accurate results than just using a single speaker. Is this wrong?

      No you need a omni directional mic. Just buy a ecm8000 for 30 euro's. If you want to get very precise you can send the mic for calibration. Every single ecm8000 will have a unique response,

    • @bentyreman5769
      @bentyreman5769 5 років тому

      @@timandtheocean sorry but I won't touch behringer products, I'm sure you are well meaning but if each mic is different then they cannot be anywhere near good enough for this purpose.

    • @timandtheocean
      @timandtheocean 5 років тому

      All mic from all brands are different if they are the same product. Some mics are individually tested in a special chamber and delivered with a response graph. Matched pairs are choosen on the measured response as well.

      I'm a beginner too and find it hard to understand but I think the key is to just break it down into bitesize chunks.
      Pausing the video where necessary and just studying that particular portion until you have it committed to memory.
      Then move on to the next portion.... Etc etc...
      That's how I'm doing it anyway...

    This was a great birds eye view of REW. Do you have any sources for a more in-depth “advanced” look at the software and application of it?
    I’m an audio engineer (live sound), and I’m interested in learning more about room acoustics/treatment/analysis as a whole (I can’t do live sound forever). I use Smaart Di v2, but it doesn’t offer an IR mode and I don’t feel like coughing up almost another $600 to upgrade to v8 right now. Enter REW. I can’t believe this software is free. The feature set is pretty impressive. I just need a little guidance! Any help is appreciated!

    While this may look like a through explanation to people that already understand REW, it leaves more questions than answers when is all said and done. I found it interesting that nobody in his class stopped him to answer a question about the process or the hookups or even which tabs to select when doing this. This is so much more complicated when you’re not familiar with the lingo and even computers. I’ll bet at least someone in that room wanted to know for example where you stand when performing these tone sweeps. Are there any other cords/connections needed? I’m sure the guy giving the tutorial tried his best but I also don’t think he understood what beginner means. A beginner needs to really start from the beginning.

    The real reason NOT to measure a seating position next to the left or right hand side wall is that “ If you did, then you would be outside the boundaries of your front main speakers” which in reality is a silly place to be listening to music or watching a movie anyway. With auto eq systems that are any good, there should be no such thing as a crappy seat because seating against any wall to left and right should not even be there to begin with. ALWAYS, keep your measurements within the boundaries of your front mains and DON,T go any wider no matter how many measurements your calibration equipment can take. Sometimes less measurements can mean more in terms of results.
