So it seems they were so intent on making it Switch like in appearance, they neglected fine tuning it. I'm so glad you made this review. Saved me 80 quid.
I think in China that as long as it isn't an exact duplicate of a real Switch, then there isn't much Nintendo can do because IP laws may be more loose there.
To be fair to the device Nintendo 64 is really hard to emulate in general for a console that old because none of the available emulation software is exactly the most polished thing so it makes sense an ARM CPU is having issues
Man these bootleggers are really getting closer and closer to making knockoff consoles that look pretty convincing to the original thing. That's kinda scary..
Mostly every single thing we have legit or not is assembled in China, I would not be surprised if a lot of these bootleg consoles are made by the same people that assemble the original or even in the same factories.. China don’t give a f about what people think they just work.
Some of these are so good now we're on the cusp of bootleggers making stuff that rivals more legit emulation machines for like 1/3 of the price, which is a mix of horrifying and intriguing
Why would it be scarry ... they CAN copy everithing and even make it better ... everithing is ceap because it has to be cheap ... some of the official consoles are sold underprices because they can recover money from selling software and accessories ... clones can't do that so they have to be either overpriced and few will buy or cheap ...
the shoulder buttons are quite thin.... why are devices like this that have the L2 and R2 buttons NOT make them one on top of the other like a PS2 controller?
I’ve been begging my parents for a switch for months and now that I saw this video I’m like “oo this switch looks cool and it’s much cheaper” so I asked my parents for this one and they’re letting me get it since it’s cheap, and it’s going to be coming soon I’m soooo excited!
I'm still enjoying my White Powkiddy X2! It's quite a nice, quality built retro handheld with a sleek design! It's great for lower powered consoles up to GBA and SNES. I wouldn't recommend it for N64 or PSX, though it tries to run them (a little too glitchy on higher powered consoles). One positive feature you get with the Powkiddy X2 that many people are unaware of: You get the luxury of using Retroarch on a non-Android based handheld along with a 7 inch screen! As we all know, Retroarch is mainly ran on Android. You can turn your Powkiddy X2 on and almost play your selected games instantly without having to get past that complicated Android interface (so many apps and paths to go through on Android devices along with loading time)! Also, all it's emulation cores are preinstalled and buttons are automatically mapped (though you have the option of remapping the button layout). Adding games to the Powkiddy X2 is very simple, only a few steps. It can play many systems flawlessly: GB, GBC, GBA, GG, MD, NES and SNES to name a few (that's a huge library of games already). This is my main reason for liking the Powkiddy X2. The Powkiddy X2 often get's a bad rep simply because it emulates N64, PSX and Dreamcast with glitches. In my opinion, we should not expect any chinese retro handheld to even run emulation of consoles such as N64, PSX and Dreamcast. Those three are very powerful systems and most of these retro chinese handhelds even have issues with running SNES without slowdown and glitches. That's why it would look decent on the manufacturer's end to not recommend the handheld for N64, PSX or Dreamcast gameplay if it runs with glitches. That way buyers would not have unrealistic expectations for a retro handheld and there won't be as many bad reviews and disappointments. The Powkiddy X2 official listed features and specs should not even mention N64, PSX and Dreamcast.
It’s actually not that bad I got this in just black I got the ps1 going really well I had to adjust a few things though.as for n64 I changed it from gl to Vulcan and that helped a lot also you can change aspect ratio
Still considering this device and the vids Ive seen shows its runs PS1 just fine at least when aspect ratio is changed. You said you changed a few things PS1 runs better even, what in particular?
Honestly thanks for making this; I received it today and I’m a big fan of it. I actually like the joysticks, it seems the console is focused on the hotter titles, it’s absurdly close to my real switch, the 32 gb memory card it comes with is awesome, and it’s a far cry from my X7 I have from them.
Awesome video. What handheld you recommend that plays N64 and PS1 decently? That would be deemed playable, lol. So far, my phone and PC win with an 8Bitdo controller.
Probably a dumb question. I just recently subscribed to your channel and love the retro handheld reviews. Wanted to get your opinion on best handheld for NES, SNES, SEGA/SEGACD, N64 mainly and easiest to add more roms? Sorry for dumb question.
The Powkiddy X2 is actually bigger than the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch has a 6.2 inch screen, the Powkiddy X2 has a 7 inch. I ordered the white one and plan to get the black one later. I don't care about the analog stick because I never use it. Give me SNES, GENESIS, NES, GBA, and NES and I'm good to go! Nice to have Playstation as well. Also nice that the camera is replaced by a set of stereo speakers. If you want N64, Powkiddy has the Powkiddy X15. Android based handhelds is the best way for N64 and the Powkiddy X2 is not Android though the X15 is. Now I will have the Powkiddy X16, Powkiddy RS-11 and Powkiddy X2 and I like them all!
I like the review in detail, but it’d be better with less time on irrelevant shell traits like buttons and more time on gameplay and functionality or at least switch the order where the gameplay is shown/explained first
Thanks for the video! Just wanted to note that you actually can set it to have the original aspect ratio in emulators in the Powkiddy main menu. Apparently helps with some graphical issues, as other videos have shown it actually runs most games otherthan N64 and some PSX alright. Still not a RG350 or RK2020, but maybe some people really want that bigger screen.
I’ve got one coming and I’m still optimistic; if anything it will add to my retro gaming collection and “replace” my powKiddy X7 which will only stay on with the power cord in. Mostly, I just dream of a standard switch. I could afford it if I really wanted to but I have a lite already in dark grey. I really like the huge screen of this and the look.
I like the design, you are a little cruel with poor X2 design. I like slimi form factor and the 7" screen. It's a shame it doesn't come with R2/L2 buttons or it could be a nice product
To be fair its not advertised to play N64 and I believe the N64 emu is not shown in the front end cause of that so N64 roms must be launched from the file system. Ive heard Powkiddy is working on debugging it so a firmware update may be available in the future. Video must of also been a little a rushed out cause if you would have looked in the device settings you would have seen an option to change the display size so the game window is not stretched. 256MB could be an issue yes however from other vids Ive seen it seems to be playing the systems it claims to run just fine, perhaps no screen tearing if you changed the aspect ratio as I mentioned? Worth a shot. My hacked SNES classic has 256MB RAM and looks to be running PS1 games just fine to me so.. The screen quality is very good however on this one being IPS (compared to most of the other 7" devices we've seen lately anyway) and no L2 or R2 is a shame yes but how many PS1 games use them? 🤔 And yeah, I do wish they would add a proper Dpad on these things and proper sticks, not the slider type ones. I still think for the price and size of this and how runs what it claims it looks quite good value. Yeah you can get RG350 and the RK2020 and I do have the RG350 but personally Im tired of the small screen devices, give me a larger screen please. 😊 Still, I wonder how long before they get everything right in a device, proper Dpad, both sets of shoulder buttons, good RAM and CPU, large IPS screen… Trouble is most likely would also be way more expensive. Anyway, thanks and stay safe all.
I ordered them both! Got the white Powkiddy X2 and the red Powkiddy V90, both from Ebay. It took a few weeks for the Powkiddy X2 to hit Ebay, only a few days for the V90.
Does anyone know if any of these handhelds have saving capabilities? I bought the retroid handheld game station but I could save any of the games I played.
I dont think its better. Screen isnt IPS, (x2 is) it has that older UI that uses those game short cuts but worst of all you cannot change the aspect ratio on the PS7000.
