That wonderful female voice is the late,great Cass Elliot.Overlooked in my opinion as one of the greatest singers of all time.
You’re right about the sound mixing. They were singers. The producers mixed the hell out of this. Instead of 4 singers it sounded like 12. Then they brought in studio musicians! This was 60 ‘s music!

They were a group that was formed in 1965 by husband & wife band members John and Michelle Phillips. Other two members were vocalists Denny Doherty and 'Mama' Cass Elliot They had a folk/pop sound that generated a new 60's genre labeled 'sunshine pop'. I believe that John 'Pop' Phillips was the only one to play a instrument .. the guitar. The group disbanded in 1968.
#California Dreamin' was released in 1965, peaking at no. 4 in the U.S. and no. 23 in the U.K. Their single #Monday Monday was the only song to reach no. 1 in 1966. The Mamas and The Papas were inducted into the RRHofF 1998 .. The VGHofF (Vocal Group Hall of Fame) in 2000 and the single #California Dreamnin' after being re-released in 1997 in the U.K. .. peaked at no. 9 and earned the group a GHofF (Grammy Hall of Fame Award) in 2001.
** 'Mama' Cass Elliot died of heart failure at age 32 after performing in London on July 29, 1974.
** Founder John Phillips died of heart failure at age 65 in 2001.
** Denny Doherty died of kidney failure in 2007 at age 66.
** Founder Michelle Phillips is the sole survivor today.
This song really captures the feeling of that era--thanks for bringing it back!

The Wrecking Crew played the instruments on this. John Phillips did play some acoustic guitar though the intro on this was performed by P.F. Sloan who was the composer of the number one hit "Eve Of Destruction."

Must watch Wrecking Crew and Funk Brothers documentaries if you have seen, to understand how American music was shaped during the 60’s and 70’s. These musicians do not get the recognition deserved for their contributions even in today’s music. Great reaction guys.
In retrospect, it was actually brave to hire some of the black musicians in popular music. Boycotts of albums was a common practice in Bible Belt and white nationalist evangelical cultures. Best to let we white folks find out later. But shouldn't have been until UA-cam came around. Sinatra was a menace to America. He wanted to run everything because he sucked actually (to my ears anyway).
This is another great example of Carol Kaye's brilliant bass lines underpinning the melody of the song.
Lyrically, it's wonderful and evocative of both sunny Los Angeles and the freezing cold New England winters.

@@daveman_50 Just a side-note on Joe Osborn that tickles me no end. Joe's walking bass intro to Rick Nelson's version of "Summertime" was totally lifted for "We Ain't Got Nothing Yet" by The Blues Magoos and Deep Purple's "Black Night."
There were three major backing groups of studio musicians back in the day, responsible for literally more than a thousand major artists’ records. (There were of course several others, with all labels having a stable of signed “mercenaries” for hire or loan) LA based “The Wrecking Crew” did this album. The other two, The group at “Motown,” and “The Swampers” in Muscle Shoals, AL. Google the list of recordings they made, it’s truly remarkable. The group at Motown was the Funk Brothers. The group for Asylum records was The Section. And of course Stax records had Booker T and the MG's.

My mom used to listen to this album. I was about 5 or 6 years old. I still put it on the old turntable and blast it into open space. They harmonized so well.👍🎸🎶🎼🎵

I agree. I wasn't understanding how big of a role Sinatra's criminal activities had in what happened to music since these amazing 50's-90's era. While internet addiction is certainly a big part of it, I can see all the intersections of musicians trying to bring black performers in incognito around Mafia controlled labor unions. So definitely Sinatra was point boy for enforcement. Sammy Davis Jr at the end of his life left many clues, as did actual Mafia family member Dean Martin about SINatra's meddling and criminal involvement. Sinatra was always under orders, reporting to Trump's gay lover Roy Cohn. But after Roy died, it was split up. Finkelstein Mafia attorneys and Jared Kushner's daddy seemed to fill in Roy's shoes, with Trump doing the rabble rousing to make sure only the connected entertainment industry peeps got popular. Thus, real talent suppression even more common. Keith Richards knows all about how Trump did it. Like Sinatra, they controlled the venues and hotels. You don't report to Mafia syndicates to get the big cuts to Casino owners? You don't get to tour there.
They are easily one of the best vocal groups of all time. It's always worth mentioning that they weren't using overdubs to get that sound. Part of their magic is that their harmonies were so perfect that they frequently created an overtone effect that they band called "Harvey" because it was like having a fifth voice.
And this group had as much internal drama as Fleetwood Mac!

Such an iconic and beautiful sounding song that indeed epitomizes the sound of the 60s; the opening guitar notes are so recognizable. This was a huge hit when it came out and still stands the test of time as one of the best songs ever.

There is a documentary called "The Wrecking Crew". Its about the studio musicians of LA up through the 60s. They were on every record of that era. Its an eye opening movie about the studios and all who worked there. Its a must see.

Bud Shank, west coast jazz great, plays the flute solo. Primarily sax player but did a lot of LA session work in the ‘60s.

Mama Cass (Elliot) was AWESOME ... so much so that you can immediately tell when they are ACTUALLY singing as opposed to lip-syncing in any video. She had such a powerful voice, that when they were singing LIVE, she had to stand back 4-5 feet from the same mics as the rest. So, if you see a video of them, and she is standing beside everyone ... it's lip-synced.
BTW, in case no one else mentions it, this song was written for Michelle Phillips (who was a California native) by her husband, John. They were in New York, working with the group New Journeymen, which eventually evolved into The Mama's and The Papas. They were there to do recordings and she was feeling homesick for the coast. He stayed up late nights writing, and wrote the 1st verse for her, and brought it to her in the morning ... so that longing is what the song reflects.
Incidentally, she always had a dream of singing before the Queen of England, and she finally got the chance after the band split up. She was still very close friends with Michelle Phillips, and after her performance, she was so excited about it that she called Michelle to tell her. She died in her sleep that night, having fulfilled her dream. I have always been so happy for her !!! At least she got that ...

This was a legendary group and as others have said they have loads of tunes to check out. I'd suggest the song "The Mamas & Papas -Creeque Alley (on the Ed Sullivan Show)" this song is an autobiographical hit single written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips; narrating how the group was formed and its early years. And the lyric that say's "And No one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass" is quite remarkable if you think about it. I think it took a lot of "moxie" to include a line about your weight (especially when you are a large person). It spoke to Cass Elliot's confidence and resilience. She was known as the queen of L.A. pop society in the 1960's. and I've read articles that spoke to the fact that she carried herself with such class and poise that everyone looked pass her size. RIP: Mama Cass 💔🔥U R Missed

As mentioned, Mama Cass held what would be called "salon parties" in 1940s France, in the LA music community. As a result, she was involved in the formation of many bands, by introducing future bandmates to each other. John Phillips, the lead singer on this track, was the promoter of the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, the most important such festival until Woodstock happened 1969. That is where you saw Mama Cass in the audience blown away by Janis at her coming out party. The Who also had their American debut at Monterrey, and reportedly scared the shit out of the laid-back Californians with their guitar smashing antics. There is a movie on UA-cam about the festival of you are interested.

There’s a great documentary on the group of studio musicians who played for the Mamas and the Papas. They were called The Wrecking Crew and the list is endless for the musicians that they played with.

A lot of 60s music sounds better in mono. Stereo placement was screwy until the 70s. Most of the stuff we originally heard was on the single speaker in the middle of our car's dashboard.

Lovely song on Tuesday morning! A 60’s classic, paints an idyllic picture of a place that went extinct in the 70’s. There were four singers, none played anything but maybe the tambourine. Crazy little story about Mama Cass.. she passed away in an apartment in London, the same apartment Keith Moon from The Who would later die in four years later - both at the age of 32.

One of the best Folk bands of the 60's!!! They were Dope!!! Love that 60's Flower-power psychedelic sound!!! There are some bands in 22 & 23 coming out with that 60's psychedelic sound like Th Canons, Beach Weather, and October Blue....I am glad to live to hear it come back in full cycle. Good reactions!

It´s the only one I follow, because you are serious in your task ♥California Dreaming is a wonderful song, I think it was The Mamas & The Papas breakthrough song, it was famous all over the world, also in my Swedish teenage years 😊In my opinion Mama Cass = Mamas & Papas, her beautiful vocals are sailing high above the other members of the group 💓. I REALLY do recommend their (perhaps underrated) song "Twelve Thirty", where Mama Cass is on the top of her genius, please do a reaction to that song next 🙏

I think you guys will appreciate a song from another vocal group who also recorded with The Wrecking Crew. “Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes” by the Fifth Dimension. They had many hits more on the pop side but this particular tune has really beautiful and interesting arrangement and instrumentation. A real who’s who of musicians listed on this recording. And along with gorgeous vocals of Marilyn McCoo.

Was written in response to being in NYC in winter recording missing California. Got down on his knees to pretend to pray. The preacher liked the weather because it brought people into the church, even if only to get warm.
