They actually do a duet of that song, (which you can see here on UA-cam) and they are fantastic together. They both have those effortless singing voices. It just comes so naturally to them. Can you believe that John Phillips did not want to include her in their group because of her weight?! Clearly she had the best voice of the group with a personality to match, so I have heard. As amazing as that performance of "Ball And Chain" was, my very favorite part of the actual video is Mama Cass at the end, shaking her head and mouthing "wow."
Frankly, I believe her. Many reasons why I do that I don't want to share here. Phillips may have been a very talented guy, but wins no humanitarian awards in my book. Not that any of this matters really, just an opinion.
I heard that he didn't want to include her because her voice didn't match what he wanted for the group. Cass had one of the most beautiful voices of the 1960s and beyond. She could sing a glorious lead or add a beautiful harmony line to anything that was brought to her. It's such a shame she passed away so young. In truth, she disliked the Mama moniker as that was only when she was a member of The Mamas and Papas. The Mama name evoked so much pain she endured because of her size, her only true public pleasure was when she sang in her angelic voice. This is probably her best moment as a solo artist, giving her a chance to sing a much older song with some wonderful Blues roots, something she excelled at.
I was born in 54, so this was at the peak of my Teen years. My Mom played her music and I was very familiar with all the old pop 'standards' such as this. Cass Eliot was the Star of the Mamas and the Papas. Not just a great voice, she had a real star quality. She exuded something that was beautiful and fun. Gone too soon.
She held “ salons” at her home in Laurel Canyon, bringing together the great artists of the day.
Yes, the original is better, and clearer. You can't hear her voice in this one too well, drowned out. Check out the original of her 'Words of Love' with the Mamas and Papas.
The album is great with the Mama's and Papas
Yes! Do "Words of Love"! Oh man, what a great song.
Words of Love rocks the world
Cass was the BEST! What a great voice and what confidence!
Greetings my friend. Years since I heard the incomparable Cass Elliot and boy she's G O O D!! In the good old days of vinyl I had an LP of hers I played over and over. More of her please, don't care which song because she could S A N G...Thank you, stay safe and blessings...
First time I saw Mama Cass it was this Video... At home by myself... Watching TV andI saw a large lady walk out onto the stage and waited for the Opera
She sang this song and I was hooked on Mama Cass for life...
An amazing voice and perfect tones
Me and my wife had this play at the end of our wedding ceremony, beautiful song.
I have always loved this song
She was from the singing group called "The Mamas and the Papas." Hence the name "Mama" Cass.
One of my favorite songs by a beautiful voice, silenced too soon RIP Cass Elliott
So sad that she was a victim of fat-shaming back in the day. Her soaring voice with the Mamas and the Papas was amazing. They truly epitomized the Hippy movement of that time; peace and love (with some drugs mixed in!).
This is the voice I sing when ever I sing this song! I love Mama Cass! ❤️
what a voice!, reminds me of ann wilson from heart
Cass was the QUEEN. That voice is something else.
As an old dog i dig youre appreciation of good music.
Mama Cass Elliot was a queen. She was the backbone of the Mamas and the Papas. Great singer. So nice to see Jamel that you appreciate true singers. Peace 🙏🏼
I remember hearing this when I was a little kid. My Mama loved Cass.
She had a one in a million voice, just fantastic!
Mama Cass's best song is "Words of Love" with The Mamas & The Papas. 💜 Check it out 😊
When you hear her sing you can't help but smile.
The song is from 1931 it's been recorded hundreds of times, they called her Mama Cass because she was in the band the Mamas and Papas.
Hey Jamel! Cass Elliot, I remember seeing her sing live on many shows in my youth. A pure and powerful voice, indeed! This is a sweet song and doesn't require power but when she sings a tune that does, she isn't guilty of "belting" it out, she just has power.
Written 1931 & first released by Ozzy Nelson
What a beautiful soul Cass was , I've never heard anyone say a bad word about her ,a real diamond 💎
This was her song. Mama Cass because she was part of the Mamas and the Papas.
Beautiful voice and song! Mama Cass left us too soon! This song was in the movie Leap Year. Love watching you on your music journey! You touch people w your realness! Definitely need people like you to spread the richness of music 🎶

Love that song. Reminds me of listening to Art Bell's old radio show.
That's one of my favorite songs.
I remember Doris Day singing this on a special. Too weird!😂🤣😂
My Mother loved this song, and Mama Cass.
She was from the Mamas and the Papas which is why she had "Mama" in front of her name.
@@Salguine I have heard Mama Michelle.
What a beautiful powerful voice she had! Loved her! ♥️🎼🎶
"It's Getting Better" is another great solo Cass song!
So beautiful ... I have always loved this song, and Cass killed it.
"Dream A Little Dream", was the name of the movie with James Coburn and Corey Feldman. ✌
Not James Coburn, Jason Robards.
Mama Cass had a wonderful voice.
Would love some more Cass Elliott, maybe It's Getting Better or Make Your Own Kind Of Music.
Mama Cass has an amazing voice. She had such power but her voice was so clean and crisp. It's an old song that other people did before her but she was by far the most famous version.

Mama Cass was a funny gal. She had a great sense of humor. And of course a gorgeous voice! How fun it would’ve been to hang with her!
She would get a lot of flack about her weight, how sad people can be.
My dad told me that, at one point, she did lose a bunch of weight but it changed her singing voice so she put the weight back on
@@kellyp136 Her voice changed because of the crash diet she was on - she lost 100 of her 300 pounds way too quickly, which led to ulcers and throat problems. Her heroine habit didn't help either.
@@juniorjohnson9509 Showbiz is horrendous to women who are not naturally skinny. Diet pills ( speed) gave her that heart attack. 😥
@@TheDivayenta No. The autopsy showed zero drugs in her system.
@@juniorjohnson9509 doesn't matter... Could have weakened her heart
Cass had one of the most beautiful voices.
She was actually a Jewish woman, born Ellen Naomi Cohen.😉
Can't get more Jewish than that!
Beautiful woman with the voice of an angel!
I'll be 40 the day after Thanksgiving and I grew up on this kind of music...Loved it as a kid and adore it now.
It was in a movie called “THE NOTEBOOK” with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams!
