It’s nice to see Jake finally turn into a captain. The responsibility of being in charge is a serious job and when lives hang in the balance, safety must always come first.
True. I remember the first ep when he was a greenhorn on the Northwestern.
I was just thinking the same thing, haven't watched the show in years and I'm happy for him.
He gives up too much information
@@patrickrogers4318 Jake has always been a talker.
I have loved Jake, he's grown into an incredible young man
The difference in how Jake treated his boarding where he was 100% compliant and accommodating is a stark contrast to the episode where Wild Bill got boarded and he turned on the heat just to get them off his ship as fast as possible, and they even called him on it!
The Coast Guard remembers interactions like this....in both directions.
Yup they sure do! Wait till his next boarding 😳
and you don't lie to the Coasties they will send you back to port and impound your boat if do that. The Rollo is no longer with them and neither is the North American both vessels got impounded and Jake does not want the Saga to get impounded again remember he just got Saga out of the impound after Elliot blew it and Jake needs to make sure Saga does not land up drydocked in Boat Jail because no one wants to see their vessel impounded.
@@geomodelrailroader That's only if you're on a USA flag. Since their in international waters lot of people just Flag of Convenience to not deal with it.
Always nice with coasties, it's the fwc with sheriff tag alongs that you got watch out for. Coasties know my boat so they don't bother me anymore because they know I'm a eccentric spaz and know I help search when boat's go missing. Should rephrase that they don't want to board me anymore 1 time was enough fun for them.
@@kishascape want a bet? you can still get impounded for failing inspection and lying to the the Coast Guard you don't lie to the Coasties they will put you in jail and impound your boat if you do that. Rollo was impounded first, North American was impounded second both of their captains were fined, Cornelia Marie was impounded for narcotics and failing inspection Josh Harris and Casey McManus got it out of jail, and Saga also narcotics Jake got it out of jail all three of its captains were busted for drugs the last one was Elliot. The Coasties are the law up there you lie to them you get impounded.
Bout time that cutter got a fresh coat of paint
Still doesn’t look terrible being from 1967…
How about we fund the USCGC…
That's the 1st thing i noticed the split second they showed that cutter..LOLOL
@@Slampedro Damn shame….We already do! Paint the boat! Crew is sharp…paint the boat!
If these brave men show up to save your sorry ass you won't care what their ship looks like .
Most of these older cutters won't get the attention they deserve until we decommission and sell them to 3rd world navies.
The fact that he was up front about it was probably what saved that inspection.
Better to let them know you're aware of the problem than to be asked about it later, then making it look like you 'conveniently' forgot about it.
Exactly. Shit happens at sea every sailor nows that. Him telling them about it means he’s on top of his game and checking things. And knows of the issue and knows there at least one working survival raft.
Ehhh it doesn’t really make a difference. If he wasn’t complaint they would just send him back. At best it would make a fine and other things less.
@@WJWeber yet they also understand the realities of the season and how long it can take to get replacement supplies delivered after order. They clearly understand and are attempting to be compliant, but they don't want to completely miss out on a season because they didn't have a backup liferaft to the one they just bought. The insurer would be far angrier than Coast Guard. :P
nope. i bet they wouldn't have said anything since they weren't even sure if more than one raft was required. but Jake made it a thing which was dumb and they made note of it. if one of them knew it was illegal they may have forced Jake to port. Jake was talking too much all in all. that is the one thing u don't do with inspectors.
@@doc-vg9lq If it's something minor, maybe you don't tell them. If it's something as big as a life raft, you tell them, because if it was illegal, they're going to find it and send them back anyway. If it's legal and they find it, they're going to search more, because if a captain isn't smart enough to tell them something so obvious, what else are they hiding.
As a former owner and the operator of a semi truck that healed over sized and extremely heavy loads. Dealing with compliance for safety was a daily thing. And when you go above and beyond the safety requirements and when you deal with the men and women who's job is to check for this stuff. Its best to be upfront and open about stuff. Just as Jake was. Because sooner of later you are going to e dealing with these same people again. And having a good working relationship with them is a vital part of the game. Because Jake is 100% correct, There just here doing there job, and to keep these fishermen safe as they do there's.
A great way of putting it.
And as he said, they're going to find out something like a damaged life raft anyway, it's not like that's a small detail. So no point in making them think you take them as stupid.
Yeah, safety starts with you and trust no one, including USCG. When I was younger the Cost Gard was in my Port. The Caption of that ship made the mistake of speeding out of the inner harbor over a emergency. He didn't even use the siren, just the blue light.
For anyone that doesn't know, you never leave a wake in the inner harbor. That's how people get hurt by crashing boats. It also doesn't take long to safely leave the inner harbor. Once in the outer harbor, they should be able to give her hell.
The pickups that follow you are driven by some real asshats. They want to take three lanes up on I-95 during the day for a truck that barely overlaps one, and they don't give a shit about the laws regarding the lines on the road.
as a council abnormal loads officer I can confirm this. It's far easier to work with someone who's willing to work with me to make sure a movement is safe. The last thing either of us want is a truck hitting or going through a bridge or causing an accident. If a load is unsafe for a piece of infrastructure then it's unsafe. I've had one incident where a haulier who shall remain nameless has tried to give me a hard time about rejecting a proposed route and all that's achieved is making me less likely to assist in the re-routing process in future cases where issues arise (a courtesy I normally have no issue helping with but not something I'm required to do by law or council policy.)
I've watched Jake from being a deckhand to becoming a captain and tbh he has definitely earn his captaincy.
Still whines more than a drunk housewife
@@mikedugan671 n'ah, that was Elliot.
Jake is a kid plain and simple. Clearly insecure about what people think about him, and not cut to be a leader imo. He behaves more like Charlie Day thinking he's a boat captain in Always Sunny.
Jesus, Jake was terrified. Acting that nervous just get's you in trouble and does no good at all.
Like you, watching Jake for years, and to be honest, I never thought he would make it. But he has fought through many hardships and he has turned into a captain.
After working on tugboats for many years, I came to describe it as hours and hours of utter boredom, interspersed with moments of utter terror. It’s how a captain responds in those moments of terror, that are most telling.
Inspections are important, it's easy to forget that the boats are workplaces. When things go wrong the crew's lives depend on that equipment to save their lives, and if it's not being maintained by the captain and owner it puts lives at risk. It might seem like a bother, but when a ship goes down and people end up in the water because liferafts are missing, or expired and fail to deploy, people die.
yup and Jake told the Coasties the truth that he has to go to Akutan and pick up a new raft. You don't lie to DHS because if you do they will impound your vessel and send you back to port. It is their job because if not all the safety gear is there people die. The Bering Straits are the most dangerous sea in the world you go in there you die thats why The Coasties want everything to be secure and every piece of gear is on board remember at the start of season they lost the Scandie Rose and the Destination and Saga does not want to take any chances.
@@geomodelrailroader yes safely first! It all falls on the captains! RIP my friends 😢
Imagine what some might try to get away with, without knowledge of possible inspections.
Its never been the govt job to keep you safe, that's your own responsibility. If you're willing to give up your freedom for "safety" than I feel sorry for you...
I’m sure the fisherman hate the coast guard at times but I bet their rules have saved a lot of lives
@Rebel N Trains I bet there’s a good reason for that
They are their to help fishermen
Yup. Just like truckers that hate the DOT or highway patrol guys

@Hunter Schnezler Best way to get on a boat is get your self up there, by starting as a processor dock hand, fork driver for the processing Companies and work your way up. I worked on some of the best Crabbers by hustling and working hard. Destination, Amatulli, North American, North Sea, Arctic Sea, Ocean Harvester, Determined, Saga, Lisa Marie( mosquito boat) Nordic Star, Aleut Pride later sold and named Alaska Pride, it sunk on us 1993. To name a few over 25 years. You gotta get up there and work hard at ground level.
Telling them about the problem before they found it in their own was very smart.
Wow! This guy has really grown up since he first stepped on Sigs boat as a greenhorn all those years ago. It's been nice watching him rise to captain
I feel like what happened was some dudes on the CG ship were like

Good on the captain for informing the CG about the raft instead of waiting to see if it was discovered.
Honesty is always the best policy with OHS or any other governmental workplace safety inspections. If they're good at their jobs they *will* find the violations. If you get out ahead of it with honesty it shows you're conscientious and safety-minded. Hiding it means you're either not aware of the issue or are trying to hide it; neither are good.
Honesty goes a long way 💯
Always the best policy, be honest. They are gonna find it anyway. If you tell them straight up and there is something they can go either way on, they are gonna be much more likely to help you out if you were straight with them.
It's like getting pulled over just on the water makes you nervous as hell
People poke fun at the coast guard due to them not being combat facing. But everyone changes their story when they are needed. They go out in the worst conditions to save lives. Massive respect for them and everyone that serves. Thank you
It's actually pretty common for the coastguard to board fishing vessels. They make their checks then disappear 😂
Maybe double check everything, being a Captain..you said it!! Always praying for the best for ALL you guys!!!
Don't expect what you don't inspect.
If I were a crew member, I'd be happy to have the Coast Guard tell the Captain to go back to town for safety supplies vs a Captain who is only concerned about profits and not the lives of the crew.
So kool to see him captain a boat after all the hard work he put in. Way to Go! 👍
I don't care what nobody says I've been a huge fan of Jake from the beginning, grew up fast and does one hell of a captain now
I’ve watched the show on and off over the years and he’s turning out to be a decent captain.
Blessings to the Coasties; particularly for rescues.

good on ya for saying something and not having to explained himself
I remember 15 years ago watching jake joining Sig crew, I always admired his hardwork and honesty
US Coast Guard is your best friend on the high seas 24/7
It’s annoying, but they’re the same dudes that’ll call down an entire fleet and risk their own lives to save two dingbats who accidentally got too far from shore when they weren’t paying attention.
Any weapons onboard?
Yes sharp knifes, forks and a finishing hook does that count?
LMAO.. But on a serious note, it's one thing for Mr Joe Boater to say no when they really do and get busted. It's another thing for a commercial fishing capt to say no, then one is found. Jake and his boat could have had his season ended if the boarding officer wanted to be a Richard. Now, the not-so-funny thing is, the BO doesn't even need probable cause to pretty much rip his boat apart trying to find a weapon, had he suspected him lying. Now, if Hilstrand had said NO. We would have seen the BO peeing him/herself laughing so hard.
How the captain dealt with that situation is how we should all handle encounters with any type of law enforcement. Everyone was calm, reasonable, respectful and it all worked out fine.
That coast guard cutter is a mess on the outside.
It has rust, discoloration of the hill and looks horrible on the outside. Makes me wonder what the inside looks like?
Hard to paint the side of the hull in 20 foot seas not to mention putting your crew at risk even trying that. I guess they cold use their drinking water to rinse off the salt water from all the waves hitting the hull and superstructure.
They need some sacrificial hull anodes to prevent corrosion.
as someone that had to bust rust and repaint, a ship with a fresh coat of paint will look just as bad after spending time at see. after removing all the paint, cleaning it (so the tools dont push anything into the metal which would create air pockets), grinding it down to metal, cleaning it again and applying the primer and paint, wait one day and you will see spots of rust bleeding through the paint in the exact same spot. fighting rust and corrosion (aluminum oxide) is an on going and expensive battle
@@mrexists5400 Its amazing the lack of knowledge of people making comments. Apparently people on here are experts at what ships look like at sea after a few months taking salt water. Thank you for your comment. Hopefully but I doubt it your comment will get through some people.
@@ThatgirlnamedJodie sacrificial anodes only stops what’s going on under the water. Through electrolysis.
It doesn’t stop surface rust above the waterline. Where the paint has been damaged.
Honesty is the best policy when dealing with them - but IMO they (Coastguard) need to clean up their own vessel to present better to other ships.... - coming from a US Navy Veteran.
Kinda shameful right from a non military person, thought we had pride in our equipment
As a GM2 Coastie I was deployed on the USS Tornado for 3 weeks. I have never seen a vessel in such disarray in my life. My GMC asked the BMC of the Tornado if they needed any weapon maintenance done as we had four GMs with us and they said sure. I uncovered the starboard .50 and it was straight orange from rust. My GMC out loud said WTF. Out of the three navy vessels I have been on only one had a decent appearance from being in their maintenance period right before we left. The other two looked like gray rust.
Yeah the Coast Guard seems to get ignored a lot. People don't realize how important they are. Sure they don't go fighting wars around the world (at least as far as I know they stay domestic) but they protect our waters and risk their lives to save people in trouble both at sea and after disasters. Also thank you and all veterans and active duty for your service and sacrifice for our country.
The cutter is from 1967…

NO, salt water corrodes? You don't say?
But that's ok they are tooling around in a 40+-year-old outdated ship. You have your priorities mixed up mate.
They get painted when at their Home port. But in the Bering Sea they get rusty looking fast. Back in 1991 We departed the Bering Sea went to Pearl Harbor on Turbines and sat off the coast and painted the ship in a Day. All Hands on deck. Spent a week at Pearl, then we Steamed homeport and repainted it again

Thats right Jake....My hats off too em
Jake with a great Nick Manning reference at 4:19. 🤣🤣
Honestly, the fact that he was so up front about the life raft issue is probably the reason they let him go. If he tried to hide it, or didn't know, they'd send him back because either a) he was lying or b) he was incompetent. The fact that he was honest and already on top of the situation probably gave them the confidence to let him off. Of course, the report is so, if he gets checked again in say a week and still doesn't have the second raft, then he'd be screwed.
Important to remember as well, they do these to make sure the ships are safe not just for the crew and captains lives, but their own. We know from similar clips that more often than not its a coast guard officer that gets injured or dies on rescues. They're literally all in this together.
