it's really cool to see how the fishermen in this show have evolved through the years. they started out as competitors, and now they're all in the business together
The producers kinda pushed the “competition” narrative. There’s only so many pots to fill with crabs helping the others out when you’re filling up is good for business as sooner or later they’ll help you out as well.
I think this is the difference between "Competition" and "Friendly Competition" Nobody cares about 'winning' if someone got hurt or the company quota wasnt filled.
Jake's always been a good guy (who's gone through a lot) since he worked on the Northwestern, glad to see that not only is he successful but also that he's still a good dude.
I love how, when it comes right down to it, most of these guys on the various boats will have each other's backs when one of the boats is in trouble. Yeah, they may fight and squabble and have intense rivalries out on the fishing grounds, but they also watch out for one another when they're out there. Commercial fishing is dangerous, and if something goes south, regardless if it's in port or out on the grounds, the only people these guys can rely on are their own crews and the skippers/crews of the other boats.
They always had each others back if something bad happens its how a lot of fishermen are but for these crab fishermen is more true then ever at the moment. Covid is restricting how much they can fish and the Russians are taking over the market. They have to work together now because they are all fighting to keep Americas spot in the market. If Russia takes over the market they wont be able to sell any crab and that would be the end for all of them.
Definitely. I remember that massive fight between Jonathon and Keith and even at the end when they were shouting Jonathon was like "Don't ever call me.......unless you're sinking". I know it's kind of obvious that you'd help a sinking ship out but it was still cool to hear it even when they're going at each other.
I guess you could say the helping each other out much more than they would have in the past is true for just about every boat on the show. With a one person exception: Monty Colburn. Dude takes help from others, but doesn't return it, even if its part of the deal he made to get the help he got in the first place. Dudes a huge piece of shit.

@simmiesim321 he was probably wearing a gopro. Those are waterproof cameras that are also pretty lightweight. Not really an issue when you're in shallow water.
Lmao he had what looked to be an 85 cubic foot tank of air. On my first dive to 30 ft that lasted me over 30 mins with 0 real experience. Any experienced divers at that shallow of a depth would have had 60+ mins worth. Also, the above water crew NEVER tells a diver when to surface based on air levels. What if he sucked back a ton of gas by hyper ventilation or a free flowing reg? Divers have spg's (submersible pressure gauges) that tell you when to surface. Also, the gear wasn't used old wetsuits as they tried to say. It was all brand new aqualung expensive gear. The story was complete bs.
Ive been watching this series for years since the first season. The show inspired me to go commercial fishing for years (salmon tender). Its amazing how far Jake has come. Its unbelievable how proud someone can make you who you have never even met.
Awesome to see Wild Bill be the true man he is, paying the man bit even when it wasn’t asked for or offered, awesome to see Jake grow up to be a badass captain and always willing to help. You can tell this show is legit 90% of the time. Love it

In every way that was a good choice by jake. He helped a guy in serious need out, he builds his rep with his fellow captains as a reliable guy, and in return, he is more likely to get help, god forbid, if he needs it. In jobs like this, you have to be willing to help your fellows out, even if it is a competition, because what goes around comes around, and in this line of work, you wont last long by being selfish and hoping nothing bad happens to you. Because it WILL happen to you.
it's nice that they work together, but I as a diver can tell you that this is all great nonsense, he has an SPG that shows him the amount of air in the scuba tank, so no one needs to hammer on the boat, at that depth of 3-4m with half a tank (100bar) he could dive for 2 hours...

Love the manufactured drama. There could have been a giant squid or a megladon waiting under the boat for him. The banging on the hull with the sledgehammer was priceless. Novel approach.
I do this around 200 boat wheels a year lol. It would been more interesting without the drama and had shown more rope cutting. GotRope diving on UA-cam if you want to see what I mean.
I've seen jake come so far in his quest to be a bearing sea crab skipper, remember watching him baiting pots and lapping it up like them pots were going outta fashion, JAKE SIG once said one day you'll be a crab man and you grabbed them crabs buy the balls my man and you worked your way up the ropes until you reached the wheelhouse. The danger is very real but as far as diving goes that wasint very dangerous compared to other diving jobs out there. Hell there's even diving hobbies more dangerous then this like cave diving. Cant blame them for making it a big deal though since they have to film anything even remotely interesting to make half hour episodes.
Have two combat divers in my family. Both of them said the scariest thing in the world is working around boats. You just pray they don't turn em on when you're down there.
At the depth of the propellor there is at least 45min of air in the scuba tank, assuming it was at full pressure when commencing the dive. Maybe I am wrong as mainly having been involved in surface supplied diving operations (as a diving superintendent) but I do not think so tbh :) This was a 15min dive. Max. Discovery and their drama always :S
45?😂 had 1:30 air without problems, stood still and cut the rope, dived it seems to me with an 12l tank at 4-5m depth I dived today on a 3m and 130 minute long dive and I was left with 90 bar, but to be honest it was an 18l tank so ...
The kid said it perfect, humble yourself up and help each other out if you are able too. Simple acts of kindness is what makes the world a better place and worth living. Money is great and all but it isn't everything. I'll take a quiet night at home with loved ones over any amount of money!

He doesn’t need the boat to tell him how much air he has left. People on the surface can’t say for certain someone has 30 minutes of air. It depends on conditions, the diver, and the depth. At that depth, assuming the diver is experienced, he could pretty easily get an hour’s worth of air if he’s using an HP 100.
As a diver... That was such BS. No danger or drama at all. As long as he's OK with the temperatures, he's diving so shallow he can stay down there until his air runs out, which at that depth will be aaages. No decompression necessary either.
And this is why you have someone get a basic certification so they understand that his air gauge is literally sitting in his lap. Plus you can communicate in a basic form with the line attached to you (there’s already a whole system for it)
Honestly, I think the guy that went down is a scuba diver and was fine. All the oh he only had 30 minutes of air was pure TV let's assume the audience have no idea and we'll pretend it was something else.
Reminds me of when I dived under the boat to cut the line also. No googles, no breathing apparatus. Just took short time underwater and tried to cut as much as possible. With breathing scuba diving equipment I don't see the problem to do this job.
Shocking on any marina/port you must have 2 Divers down. One as back up. Only in USA risk and don't follow International Rules. We do this all the time on rescue missions

As a diver if you’re near/under a resting boat you should always have your hand on the bottom so that you drift with it on the waves rather than next to it.
Why are people on the surface telling a diver on a scuba tank how much air (they think) he's got (even if he can actually hear the banging)? That's what the pressure gauge he has is for. It's not like the people on the surface know how fast the guy is breathing while he's underwater. They bought two scuba tanks on deck. If he really only has 30 minutes of air total from the 2 tanks, they should probably have gone and filled it up first. Totally unnecessary making it appears more dangerous for TV. And oh that look like a drysuit not a wetsuit.
He can definitely hear the banging. Banging steel on a steel hull resonates a lot. Also the diving suit looks to be a proper diving suit with in- and deflation valves etc. I do agree with you on the rest though, unless they had the tanks onboard and fed it via an umbilical they would have no idea how much air he had left and i felt the show just made it overly dramatic just for the sake of it, though it was a hazardous job.
so with the line wrapped on the prop, should have started by cutting each of the lines leading to and away from the prop. Then if you cant clear the tangled bit on the prop at least there isnt extra line dragging in the water or more being added to the prop.
Would you like to sacrifice a $hitton of fuel efficiency fitting a guard that can actually protect the propeller against rare incidents like this? seems redundant.

It's very poignant to know that they will have one another's backs when the proverbial chips are down and one of them needs a hand.

It's always fun working on ships and you do lock out tag out but pretty much none of the crew understands english.

so with the line wrapped on the prop, should have started by cutting each of the lines leading to and away from the prop. Then if you cant clear the tangled bit on the prop at least there isnt extra line dragging in the water or more being added to the prop.
They should build a guard around those propellers
Would you like to sacrifice a $hitton of fuel efficiency fitting a guard that can actually protect the propeller against rare incidents like this? seems redundant.
