Sad to say, but a lot of deadly accidents happen because people let their guard down with safety especially on trawlers or fishing vessels… also merchant vessels often don’t comply at all, something as stupid as leaving the ER WT door open can be fundamental. Some Mariners still don’t understand that Is not avoiding you sinking or being stranded, but is how long you can be floating around, that time will save your life
So every employer manager owner etc groans when ever anyone is inspecting them for anything. Its universal. Osha shows up and you can hear ppl moaning 3 blocks away. Every one of those inspectors are there to keep people safe but its perfectly normal for people to feel put upon. Its no different here.
It's like getting a CDL. When you get a license to operate, you agree to the terms. Part of that is compliance to rules that are not there to make your life a living he11 but to keep you, your crew and everyone else SAFE. Last thing the CG wants to do is interfere with your lively hood and will go out of their way to ensure they don't. But it's all in a days work till someone gets hurt. The BTO could have swabbed the WHOLE crew, waited for the results and held up the TB for hours, but they were the bigger of the two, came on, did thier thing asap and got off. Remember, they have plenty of time, the TB didn't.
Coast guard doesn't inspect your living quarters and go through your personal stuff. There not the police and they do no search you. Now if the smell or see drugs in plain sight they will take control of the vessel and bring u back to port for the proper authorities to deal with you.
Coast guards like the Dot for a trucker they can show up at anytime to inspect you when you don't want them to but there doing it to make sure your following the rules and keeping your boat and crew safe
I am in the coastguard, (not Us coastguard) We have the authority to demand you to haul up your gear, stop your vessel, or go a certain heading, we never do it to keep these grumpy cats happy. We're doing our job, weather that's rescue, tow, inspections, fire fighting. If you're fishing illegally then it's a massive you problem

@@tripical We don't do those kinds of inspections in my coastguard. We simply inspect fishing vessels fishing equipment. But for small boats such as pleasure crafts or a small fishing vessel we inspect safety equipment and all of that good stuff. as for what would happen if you're caught with drugs, I'm not 100% sure, It's probably going to varies from country to country, but at the minimum the crew member would be taken back to port and that may mean they go with the coastguard or with the ship they work on if their on minimal crew (ships are required to have a certain amount of crew to be run) The Xanax I have no clue. If it's something that's prescribed you should be fine, just make sure your master is aware of all meds you take. And for most ships they have a hospital/medical bag, we have a very advanced hospital/medicine storage, so anything we need, we get. But some ships need to medevac sometimes or return to port asap

Meaning No. If it is for what you described, panic attacks, those often occur whilst on shift or during times when you are on anchor watch. It would be illegal for you to work under the influence of xanax whilst on shift. This varies from country to country (I am outside of the US) however it is like this in most places.

Inspecting again so quickly is actually a good way to find things because once an inspection happens, many place get lax until they know they're due for another one.
It's a small (Coast Guard) world mate. Not uncommon to run across a shipmate or two if you stay in long enough. After I was an instructor (RM/TC "A" and "C" school - just dated myself), on my last ship, all 4 of my TC's were students of mine at one time or another. Kind of funny and awkward at first. 73's

Otherwise, if you were fishing, they would have taken the gun, written him up and he would have to appear in court, but even that is questionable. Where did this happen?

If that was true, why would have built and crewed 10 heavy ice breakers by now and they wouldn't have gone a couple of months w/o pay during the govt shut down. Yeah, the case just roles right in.
