SOTL sitting at Safeway, calculating the expiration rate vs cost of discounted bread.
Safeway?? I value cost efficiency, sir. Costco all the way.

FINALLY a cannon galleon speed bump. An annoyance since 1999.
The projectiles were fired in 1999 and still haven't landed yet
"Scorpions are the least popular of the 4 major siege units", poor Siege Tower not even being considered 😂
xD aww man, Now I feel bad for Siege Tower :(
I don't see the Sicilians and Chinese winrate as something that MUST be fixed. Out of 45 Civs its ok to have a couple wierd ones, otherwise everything would be funneled into "Standard archer Civ", "Standard cavalry Civ" ecc...
I think increasing chinesse dark age up cost by some food and giving them that much free food will make the start less hectic.
Sicilians can be punished by a small weird starting shenanigan like chinesse but rewarded in same time to null the negative effect. This wont effect pros but it will lower the low rank win rate.
Its good to have "Pub stomper" civs that are exceptionally good at low elo, and "pro play" civs that are too difficult to take advantage of for most players. Both are good, but far too often devs -- and fanbases - hyperfocus on the esport angle and push for everything to be optimized at high elo, exclusively; "Why cant my pick be good at 1875 Elo? This isnt fair, buffs when???" is somehow generally accepted but "Why is my civ bad for 70% of the player base? Buffs when?" is met with criticism?
Its backwards thinking imo, and you cant and shouldnt have every build/playstyle/pick be strong at all brackets either.
@@Nazuikobeyond that. The point of the pro scene is to show what the best players can do, if a civ is OP, for the best and not for anyone else it should just be banned from those tournaments, there's enough civilizations that there's more then enough options

That unit still exists?

THUMBNAIL: the son rock and father rock
The sicilian bonus is actually better than the mayan cheaper wall bonus. For palisades there is around a 4 wood cost in construction time added, so each palisade is saving around 2 wood each.
Mayan + Sicilian team op
I would have expected to see a comparison how the old vs new scorpion holds up vs different melee units
If a melee unit is doing damage to a scorpion it has already won
@@caseyharrington4947 A teuton heavy scorpion now with 5 melee armor and 60 hp (instead of 4/55) dies in 10 instead of 8 hits from a FU hussar and 12 instead of 9 hits from a FU halb, so 25% more hits needed in both cases
EDIT: I'm silly, 33% more hits needed from FU halb
Bengalis losing PT means no civ has elephant archers and PT. Clearly preparing the terrain for Burmese to gain elephant archers and become that civ.
*Please*
I need this.
Man, ur patch/dlc reviews and video style are most fun to watch.
"Never go in against a Sicilian when ELO is on the line!"
Low ELO: "Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha."
High ELO: "Ah ha ha ha-" Dies.
I think like the chinese, you should keep the sicilians as one of those civs thats does better at a certain elo range so it has some uniqueness. New players can always learn and adapt so it won't be long before they figure out how to deal with them
Sicilian baptism. I honestly can't hate it.
China numbah one
No ty, that's like saying you want a civ that noobs can abuse then get smashed when they hit higher elo because they can't win with the abuse anymore.
@@ryanforgo3500 And the issue with that is??
I think it still very much should be improved, is not like Sicilians are a low elo stomper civ by design (Is just rather easy and its slow pace works fine at low-mid elo. It happens to be good there) but is very clearly disfunctional and if they manage to make them good without being oppressive nor annoying to fight I think it would be a good thing overall
love your videos man, thanks for your hard work
Regarding the Sicilians, I think you can consider them a "gatekeep" civ for lower ELO players, in the sense that it rewards players for going in more streamlined/standard play. They're, in a way, taking the place of Goths of old, where you should never let them get to the point of late game infantry spam in open maps, incentivicing you to play agressive and active instead of the turtling most low elo players do.
Idk, I'm fine with the push they're doing, even though they're a fun cavarly civ 😂
Would be ok if they weren't a DLC civ but at lower ELO it's basically a P2W civilisation.
There are just some things that are really oppressive to play against, and the only thing that really keeps them in the game is that they're not played against often enough for it to be a huge problem. Bohemian wagon rushes, the donjon rush with serjants...the turk fast imperial on arena (or a map like bypass). If you suddenly found yourself playing 10 arena games against a turk fast imperial, the experience is just less fun , nearly objectively, for one side. translate these things to low elo, where a lot of players are just playing casually and are never going to put the time in to reliably deal with any of these strategies...and you have a frustrating experience. I'd rather not look at it as 'gatekeeping'. There shouldn't be gatekeeping that relies on hard to deal with (even at higher elos, though you can do it more often than not) meme strats , in my opinion. You can learn to be an aggressive player without having to deal with a donjon rush at 850 elo every other game.
No more hunting of trees?
It was hotfixed some days ago.
It's a good day when SOTL drops a new video
Spirit of the la hire!!
They really need to fix dropped games. I've had multiple games crash while playing with friends and they are unrecoverable.
I always watch SOTL videos on the treadmill in the gym
You didn’t mention anything about the new automatic farm placement mechanic being tested
Maybe they see the potential in the Donjon being an alternative Barracks?
WHERE'S THE INTRO?!
i didn't even notice why i felt something missing!
:/ i really hope they will make at some point new coop campaign.
because i have 2 friends with wich i love to play them
and we are a littel bit sad to not se some new ons came out in such a long time
"Heavy scorpions are the least popular of the main 4 siege units"
Sad siege tower noises, whose existence is not even acknowledged anymore
as a Slavs main, the scorp buff is great news :)
I think that although they are right in nerfing the Armenians on the water, they REALLY need a buff on land. They need something to deal with BBC and long-range weapons (like the longbows). Their techtree simply doesn't have anything to offer against such units, as the cavalry is simply not strong enough (they could give them the third armour update, or the hussar) and the siege department is banal and lacks long-range (they could give them bbc). they really need this buff, since it's gg the moment the enemy fields a bbc
If only the dev fix villagers pathing. So slow as game dev
Every civ can't have a >50% winrate.
Not without some serious fuckery.
oh yes , exactly that is quite true ... if everyone looses exactly 50 percent of their matches .... everyone looses 50 percent of their Matches ! Thats an Axiom and doesnt even need a proof
Not with that attitude
Just want the acheievements fixed tbh
SOTL: "Given that scorpions are the lest popular of the four main siege units....."
Siege Towers: "WTF????"
Siege towers are great! Survivalist has an fun siege tower longsword build on his channel you should try to see how fun siege towers can be.
Survivalist is the OG siege tower gbeto or axmen raider!!
What about the -100w penalty removal from huns? Or is this just for EW?
I read that as being just for EW, though they took down the beta before I could check and confirm.
Still hoping the OG Aztecs get upgraded…
I'd like to see a How good are Berserk? (AoE2) similar to Mangudai and Mamelukes
I think sicilian win rate is more about the rest of the bonus, those bonus help low elo playing specially the reduced bonus damage.
Hey sotl, old viewer here. Interesting video idea: Best Game Mode for Each Civ. I know this would change regularly as patches come, but there are so many combos of ELO ratings, game time/length, and 1v1 up to 4v4 that different civs perform differently as. I'd be curious if the Burgundians, who you showed as the lowest win rate at 1200+ ELO, all maps, actually slap at something super obscure...like 20-minute games in 2v2 at X ELO.
Hey law, guy of the spirits here
New SOTL video lezgoooooo
Berbers are labeled as an "naval" civilization so I think having Shipwright is a must...
i would definitely welcome more buff to infantry to siege.
archers (range) and cavalry (speed) have ruled this game for so long, a change would be welcome by me.
For the love of god, DEVS PLEASE DO REGIONAL SKINS FOR UNITS!!!! SMH!
Also, unique castles for the old civs.
That is the most important thing but they never tried
Another problem here is that some of the units are named for their specific weapon type (halberdier, crossbowman, etc.) that not all civilizations actually had as well. Not sure the game will ever feel totally historically accurate for balance reasons
@@joshsharp766 100% this.
@@andrewwarren8474 They should rename some units or even just make more unique ones. Besides historical accuracy Mesoamerican units having European armor is just geographically incorrect. Lmfao.
Reads the patch notes about elephants and scorpions getting buffed no no no wait wait wait wait
Why do I watch the viper and sotl go over the same patch
I don't even play competitively
IS A CASTLE NOT A FORTIFICATION?
2:30 Ah, a micro nerf of the Elephant specifically.
It reminds me of the Spearmans bonus damage to ships. Incredibly unlikely to come up. But the damage number has been a thing for so long due to shared Ship/Camel armor type, they just kept it.
So the Elephant lost parthian tactics, while the Ratha had it integrated.
6:21 I think you have it flipped here.
My guess is that the bonus damage Resistance is what trips up lower Elo players. Lower Elo is less likely to have memorized every bonus damage or even base stat. They go by what unit _feels_ strong against which other unit. Helbadiers feel strong against Cavalry. They feel less strong against Sicilian cavalry.
Meanwhile the Donjons are wierd tower rush/proxy barracks thing. And tower rush seems like more of a low-elo strategy. Something you have to quickly learn to counter.
With the new update adjusting the Sicilian bonus, I decided to try and put together the ultimate castle-drop Civ per the rules from that one custom civs video ages back:-
---
Civ Bonuses:
- Fortifications built +50% faster; Town Centres after the first built +100% faster (Sicilians)
- Buildings, Walls/Gates, and Farms have 10%/+20%/+30%/+40% HP in the Dark/Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age (Byzantines)
- Castles are 15%/25% cheaper in the Castle/Imperial Age (Franks)
- Builders work 30% faster (Spanish)
- Stone miners generate +33% gold in addition to stone (Poles)
Unique Technologies:
Castle Age: Stronghold (Celts): Castles and Towers fire 33% faster. Castles heal allied infantry units within an 18 tile square for 30HP per minute.
Imperial Age: Citadels (Persians): Castles gain +4 base attack, +3 bonus damage versus infantry and rams, and take -25% bonus damage.
Unique Unit:
Shotel Warrior (Ethiopians)
Team Bonus: Universities work +80% faster (Malians)
Tech Tree: Burgundians
---
This is basically an exercise in making your castle drops tougher to repel, along with them being a lot stronger once they're built. The gold generation from stone mining is your major, and arguably only, econ benefit outside of the castle focus. Once the castles are up and running, you can hurl out a ton of shotel warriors in fairly short order to help repel whatever's attacking the castle drop site. The castles themselves are offensive in nature, with the additional damage and faster firing really hurting the foe, and with them being built anywhere from 80% to 95% faster depending on how the modifiers stack, you'll get them up incredibly fast, going from 200 seconds to something like 120-something at a conservative estimate. A squadron of builders with some military units to protect them will get that up lightning fast. Plus, the university will make them much stronger much quicker, since you'll have Masonry and Architecture done in a few seconds. Feedback gratefully accepted.
Shotel Warriors are kinda weak, I would think you would want Conq, Jannisaries, or Hussite Wagons as your unique unit. Hussite Wagons would be very thematic imo, since they are moving fortifications
@@micahbonewell5994 I do agree that they'd be stronger unique units as a whole; however, what made me go for the Shotel Warriors was their insanely fast creation time, as it allows you to barf them out of the castle so rapidly. Hussite Wagons would have been my second choice. =]
I'd like to use my brother as an example about Low ELO player vs tower rushes here.
There's been more than once where we would have a 1v1 (I don't play much ranked but I'd say I'm about 1k to his 950) and when I would random a civ that has a nice tower bonuses (Teutons, Koreans, Inca, etc.) that I would opt for a tower rush.
It did not matter how many times I explained what he should do against the strategy, he would instead just get frustrated and give up instantly. He wouldn't move his vills and build a counter tower, rush my base, use his vills to fight off the tower, nothing. He would always just ragequit when he got tower rushed.
I think the same situation is occurring with Sicilians and Donjon/Tower rushing. Low ELO players are refusing to learn counter strategies and instead are just giving up before trying. I don't think tower rushing is an op strategy, as high ELO players can showcase defences against it.
I'm of the opinion of "git gud" on this situation. Just like how you use pikes to counter cav, range to counter infantry, or you use a treb to take down buildings, learning ways of countering all-in strats should be something a player is willing to do to get better.
JUST FIX PATHFINDING
it's not even that hard 😞
Did you say change the price of Goth's barracks?
@@boejiden1942 2
Farm update like aoe 4?
Better vs melee, better vs siege, counter archers. So monks are the only response to scorpions now? Rams?
can anyone tell me where to play besides steam?
No elephant archer with full armor anymore. Can Burmese get them all ready?
Ive been back on 2013 hd (just kings and aoc) on a 27 inch 720p monitor. Crazy how far this game has come.
I don't know if nerfing the Malays was a good idea, they no longer have such a strong snowball compared to all the other civs
-50 wood actually sounds perfect. As you said, it doesn't mean you have a 0 IQ instant uptime anymore
For the algorithm
I would prefer that the Mongol Scout and Steppe Lancer HP bonus be moved to a Castle Age UT, with Nomads taking its place as a civ bonus. This would help regulate Mongol early Castle aggression and should make Steppe Lancers less oppressive.
Why i watch him . . .
1. He's Canadian
2. He loves AOE
Another patch without cumans getting bracer again 😢
Some one please tell me if huns buff is for EW only..
No more false age halbs!
The hud part of this patch sux the wheel is so cluttered dont need to spots to upgrade a unit
The Byzantines deserve love, how can they let them be where they are for so long?
Khmer wins the most from the elephant and scorpion buff
Switch Nomads with the current Mongol passive and make it a Castle tech and everything will be good.
Dang guess Skyrim will wait. Wanna play before they nerf Georgians. 😂
Hey guys, guys of the guys guys
The Sicilian changes are good. They were never a cavalry civ.
Fast cheap elephants seems against their whole purpose
The joke on the Stepp Lancer nerf is because theres a user content AOE2 strats called "Morley Games" was doing a Stepp Lancer Meta an how the situation scaled into a "free mongol FC win", *they nerfed the HP points on castle so the rush could be uneffective.*
And also i smell now full tower rush on open maps for the wood discount damm
Hope next patch they buff arambai
So.... Bengalis gets a mediocre buff in Arabia (where they're abysmal) and nerf in closed maps (where they're decent).
God damn it, I don’t care about these changing, fix the buggggggs por dios
Never understood why Armenians get such good ships if they are a landlocked country.
Sicilian are nightmare to the dev to make them balance
bring back road to series pls
Ooooo what if your buffs change as you’re elo goes up. So as you increase elo your donjon build speed gets faster.
And at low elo your Chinese player starts with more food until you hit a certain elo.
(Just for fun not a real suggestion)
Would definitely be "fun" to have your units become weaker when you lose games.
Will you play manor lords on channel?
8:00, that's what i've been saying to my clanmates, the -50 food was not the correct resource. it's fair they start with a little fewer resources as a tradeoff, we have exmples already: mayan, huns and chinese. But food didn't make sense because what they start with is basically a lumber-minig camp, not an extra vill! atm you can go for 16pop feudal ez on arena and make towers which are cheaper to repair.
Age of empires doesn’t need more updates, it’s just fine as it is :)
In 1000 years, even if age of empires doesn’t get any more updates, it shall still be played by thousands.
True. In Vietnam we still play AOE rise of rome 1998 version a lot
If I was a developer, I would go for the most specific nerfs/buffs ever imaginable. For example, let the wood cost of the Georgians buildings be altered for a particular building only for the Dark Age. You have to do it, otherwise the brush of general changes is too wide and you can't pinpoint the problem without making three more.
Sick and tired of the constant balance changes. The balance of the game been fine for 20 years and suddenly every month something need to change. I am going back to voobly.
Sorry my ignorance, but How +50% faster turn to into 2/3 of time?
Look up how the "x% more" marketing tactic works and how it can fool people into thinking they're getting more than they are. That will answer your question
Look up the Spirit of the Law video called "Why Attack Rates in AoE2 Are Often Wrong" if you want a full explanation from the man himself, but the gist is that +50% faster equates to 150% speed - or in other words 3/2 of the base speed. To convert speed to actual rate, you take the reciprocal. So 3/2 speed means the rate becomes 2/3.
I think for Sicillians, they should look into buffing things that high skilled players are better at taking advantage of while nerfing the baseline strengths of the civilisation to make it less steamroll-y against newer players.
Basically nerf the baseline stats of units and compensate with things like movement speed for certain units and build time to give the civ things that high level players can take advantage of while removing the ability for low level players to attack-move with powerful and cheap sargeants and donjons. Making donjons cheaper is definitely the wrong move if they're what carries the civ in low elo.
Generally speaking, changes to cost and baseline stats strike me as low-elo skewed while build times, movement speed, vision range and other utility-based changes are more impactful at high elo
The Malay Change seems fair, if anything it would make an elephant rush slightly easier as you can put less vils on food.
Greetings denizens, gheist of the perscribed human societal ordinances present.
Britons need a buff! 😢
Hey Spirit of the Law, Letter of the Law here
Sicilians win rate vs elo rating is the physical proof that they're a 1 trick pony. As soon as your opponent learns your trick, you're done for.
Hey law, La Hire guys here
Given the fact that you're listing out all the civs wouldnt that always mean there's going to be a "worst" civ and it's impossible to be otherwise?
RE the Sicilian elo win rate inversion. I think it's siege (low elo) and horrifically bad monks (high elo). Low elo players struggle with mangonel defense and 1200+ players generally dont, so Serjeant/Donjon play in mid-game tends to work better at low elo. Sicilians (criminally) don't get redemption, block printing or bombards?? so defending against late game comps is generally a joke. When you learn the hard way that they also lack atonement AND heresy?? You give up on trying to make this civ work.
Dravidian is NUMBER ONE on NOMAD?!!! 😲 HOW?!
They have the most wins percentage wise
I wonder how different the game would be and feel if you giver every civ a historical accurate techtree. 11
In dota 2 they mostly balance the game around high ELO and professional level play, and low level players are then encouraged to copy what high level players do to deal with pub stomp strats. I think this is the best approach because it encourages the best play out of everyone.
6:57 i have to agree with you and add. I don't think sicilians were extremely weak in feudal in pro play as they still have one of the best skirms and spears in fuedal. But as hera would say "sicilians just have nothing going for them in imperial age since their cavaliers still die to helbs easily"
i have a hunch that sicilians hyper-overperform at low ELO because they absolutely dominate in water maps when you start with a dock or transport, which skews their win-rate disproportionately out of band vs what it actually is
in my experience as a low elo sicilians enjoyer, i take advantage of the fact that my skill bracket tends to psychologically crumble very hard when you get even a single donjon up and running on the enemy's island in the first few moments of feudal age starting.
most players tend to turtle and boom on water maps, but sicillians are able to enormously out-scout their opponents and trivially set up donjons on their opponents stone mines
aging up to castle doesn't fix the problem most of the time in my experience because donjons shut down any sort of aquatic retaliation due to having access to heated shot meaning most un-upgraded generic ships die in only two shots from a donjon with bodkin arrow
im still not a fan of so many patches. we had the game for so many years and a patch was something so rare. now we get a patche every month changing things back and forth. aoe was never a service game or needed to be a big service game.
