Honda produced the GL500 Silverwing touring motorcycle in the early 1980's. I had one and rode it across the USA. You don't need a car on two wheels the Goldwing and other overly large modern touring motorcycle's have become. The only reason Honda stopped building GL500's was it was impacting Goldwing sales, which sold for a lot more money. I built my own version of the GL500. I designed and fabricated brackets to mount a 1970's era Windjammer fairing and the matching luggage and trunk on a Honda VT600CD (600 VLX). Craig Vetter wind tunnel tested his fairing, luggage, and trunk so there is no wind buffeting or even wind coming up from behind on your back. The Windjammer is frame mounted so zero handling problems in any conditions. I even stay dry when riding in the rain as long as I am moving. It's the perfect light touring machine no one has made for decades.
@@alterbayer7196 My wife and I toured Europe on the CX500A in the early 80s - the naked equivalent of the Silverwing. It never missed a beat, wonderful machine.
You have the right idea creating your own touring machine. I remember those when they were new. I never had one. I kept going larger with every new bike. Now old age is setting in and I never want to quit riding so I keep going smaller and lighter. My next bike will probably be the cb500x. I like your set-up ideas so I will probably implement some or all. Thanks for sharing your thoughts ☺️ Keep riding safe brother!
I didn't watch the video yet but I already know it's a great long distance bike for a solo rider. From the beaches in Baja California to high speed interstate across America my cb500x does it all.
Great review! You hit all the important things. Your touring video was interesting and we'll shot and produced. Over the years I kept going larger and heavier. As I age I refuse to quit riding so now I'm going smaller and lighter. I think the cb500 ticks all my boxes and the weight should be good for awhile. Great review 👍 and thanks for sharing! I liked and subscribed. Keep riding safe brother!
I drove one way 339miles or 545 kilometers to meet my father. The largest gripe I had was no cruise control; so I looked into throttle locks. I couldn't find one that I liked. It would be nice as an option but I know why they may not offer it to a new rider. For those still reading, I have had my 2015 for 24000 miles (38600km) and its been wonderful.
Enjoyed the video, I bought a new 2018 500x 3 months ago, got 1800 miles on the machine, have had several motorcycles through the years and simply put, I love this machine, very informative video!
Thanks for sharing. Seems you have found the best solution for 5'10 - 6'0 rider. Comparing the WRS to the stock at high setting was brilliant. Just a small increase with improved width. Great review. Ordered one.
A bigger windscreen would keep more wind off your body but not the sideways wind. IMO there are always trade-offs, a heavy bike might be more stable and smooth over highway bumps, but not as quick and nimble in cities & local areas. I like the looks of this bike and the reviews like yours that I've read. It's a middleweight cruiser, even a lightweight cruiser. The only lighter weight cruiser with 2 cyl power is Kawi z400 and that bike might not be as comfortable. I think you've got best in class. Thx for vid. I want to go to Croatia too!.
I just finished my long touring 6500 km, from Jakarta to the northern island of Indonesia, name Sabang, Pulau Weh, Aceh, Indonesia. I found this CB500X for me is very nice to drive, easy handling because of low seat (compare to my CRF 250 Rally). Overall, I like my CB500X 😍😍😍😍
Really good review, I ordered one last week and now awaiting delivery. I was in Croatia 5 years ago and thought it was a fantastic country, the only drawback was the police. I was fined 25 euros for crossing a solid white line. Having said that, the police were quite friendly, took the money with a smile. I think most parallel twins suffer some vibes, try riding an old Triumph 110!!
Thank you. Yeah I get you, in eastern world cops are way more repressive than in western world I'd say, even that's subjective. 👍👋 enjoy your new bike.
Well done--really good review, enjoyed every part of it, and a great job of giving us an unbiased opinion on what the bike is like on this kind of trip. Glad you enjoyed the ride, and the scenery was just beautiful--Croatia looks like a beautiful place!
Very good review. As a CB 500X owner I agree with all your conclusions. By the way, last october I rode my CB 500X for 3.126 km in 35 hours. You can check it in the Iron Butt Association ride list.
Absolutely. The bike pulled 80-85 mph most of the time and in some briefing periods at 90 mph. By the way, I finished the 3.126 km ride in 35 hours and 5 minutes. Good luck in your future ride; I'm sure you'll realy enjoy it. Let me know when you make it. And, thank you for your cheers. noslen308@yahoo.com.br.
Bok, taman sam pogledao video.
I had narrowed my choice down to 2 bikes ... The CB500X or the KTM 390 Adventure .. it was 50/50 but having watched your assessment I will be ordering the CB500X next month .... and the added bonus with the CB is that it is manufactured in the country I now call home .... :-)
I was between KTM 790 Adventure S and CB500X, and what put me off from buying KTM was 1st they're not reliable at all, 2nd there's not a lot of dealerships in Cro and servicing is an issue and there's tons of complex electronics on them, 3rd KTM 790 Adv S is double the price for everything parts, services, insurance, etc. and 4th 790S is 1st generation bike, CB500X 2nd or 3rd generation and all issues were polished. I'm sure it's much more fun when you open the throttle on KTM but considering all aspects CB500X was a better choice for me. I'd advise to try both and see what fits better to your riding style, all I can say about CB500X is, it doesn't have KTM charisma but it's an awesome bike that doesn't lack in any aspect for most of riders, even power output is very well balanced - linear, assuming you won't put additional 20-30kg of racks, crash guards, etc. on it - this is something I'm watching not to add additional weight. It's amazing how Honda managed to build such a good bike for a very affordable price. Good luck with your choice. 👍👋
@@shiftupadventure question for you .. the blue coloured top you wear with the padding ? is it good for hot weather ? .. and what is the brand and where can you buy from ...
@@thaiger2go947 yep, very good for hot weather, level 2 protection. Forcefield is the brand, soft armour inside that hardens on impact. Yes, happy with it there might be better options but this works for me just fine.
I was seriously thinking of a CB500 until I came across a low mileage V-Strom 650 with panniers. I have a Victory Vision so I was a bit concerned about RPM on the highway. The V-Strom runs around 5000 rpm at 110kph that’s about twice the rpm of the Vision at that speed . So it is a bit buzzy and sounds a bit stressed on the highway... I don’t get any helmet buffeting but I do get blown around a bit with cross winds. All in all these small bikes do a pretty good job for long trips. I do miss my backrest and the laid back riding position of my Vision I will never let my Victory Vision go. There is nothing like a big bike for laid back comfort on a long trip. But the V-Strom is much better than I thought it was going to be.. Buy the way I am getting 4.2 liters per 100km. But I run it very hard. Thanks for the CB500 test Rob, Canada
I have a sv650, same engine of the strom different cpu. It cruises easily at 120kmh almost 6000rpm and goes easily above 160kmh. The vibrations are a lot lower than on my old cb500f. This engines cut above 8500rpm so it is pretty safe for hours at 6000rpm. Even my 300cc scooter can do long streches of motorway at 120kmh with a topspeed of only 150-155kmh.
I have a 2018 Kawasaki Versys 650. When I purchased it, I also wanted to consider a Honda CB500X...but it was the new model year, and there were none at my local dealerships, so the Versys 650 won. I'm wondering what the difference is in vibration between the two bikes. The Versys has almost NO vibration in the handlebars and seat at highway speeds....just a little in the footpegs. But it's heavier and VERY top heavy which makes it difficult to handle at slow speeds. (under 12mph) This is not the first video which mentions vibration in the handlebars of the Honda.
Hello, great video, looking forward to putting some kms on mine as well, just got a 2021, what kind of headset are you using? Cardo or Sena? and a Gopro perhaps? thanks!
I'm planning to do my A2 soon. I'm 19 years old and currently driving a beta rr 125 lc. I heard that this bike is mainly purchased by older people, but I am pretty sure that a bike that comfortable for longer tours is more my type of bike than a super fast flashy one. I hope this bike will fit me ^^ How serious is the handlebar vibration problem? Are there any opinions from people who own the bike?
The vibration issue depends on who you ask and even then you’ll get different answers. Some say they feel none, some say it’s the crash bars. I saw a Harley at a red light the other day and his entire bike and arms and all was vibrating big time 🤷♂️. 500x Seems like a good starter and much wiser choice for a starter bike if you plan to chill and enjoy the ride and scenery. I’m one month in on my 500x and I’m a noob, for me it’s perfect and no vibes felt so far. I guess I’ll find out soon enough if any vibes.
A very informative review of the CB500X! I have been riding big bikes for decades and I am getting older. This means I am looking to buy a lighter bike that travels well and takes luggage easily. Your great review has made my choice to buy a CB5000X because it ticks all the adventure bike boxes. Yes, big adventure bikes like the Africa Twin are fantastic, but having watched your review and the adventures that "Itchy Boots" has travelled on lighter bikes like the Honda CRF 250 show the benefits of having less weight in different riding circumstances. Best wishes and safe riding on your Honda CB500X for many years!
This is why I like watching different type of videos like this each person gives their own opinion it's not like a cookie cutter what one person says you get like 5 or 10 others sing exact same thing the personal view is the best thank you
Superb review, was interested in what that covering was around the top of the tank and head stock is it an accessory from Honda to stop wind coming through the fairing??. Re the suspension front and rear, could Honda put the adjustment that's on the 500R on this bike or am I talking rubbish?. Croatia is going to be on my list of places to visit if not for the stunning scenery definitely for the cheese and meat pastry it looked sooo good 👍
Very nice review. This is what i have searching for. I am planning to pass the A2 licence since I have seen the CB500X at the Honda dealership. I had the CB125R but I want to upgrade. But again, very nice video! Just subscribed !✌️ Safe roads !
Did you finally buy the CB500X? I have the CB125R too and I want to buy a 500cc. I don't know if I should buy this one or wait for the CL500, which I like more but it's less practical. If Cb500X is not good enought in wind protection, maybe I have more reasons to buy the CL500. What do you think?
Thank you Sir for the amazing video. I want to ask you about last moment of video you say "some cheap improvement". What are them you think? Thank you!
This bike is good if you're mostly driving at up to about 100km/h. Beyond that it vibrates quite a lot and the fuel consumption goes up quickly when you reach those higher speeds. There's also a lot of wind hitting the helmet like the guy said, but there are ways to fix this problem.
I've sorted out vibrations with handlebar risers and foam grips, no issues ever since. No, I'd still buy a bike, it's not that bad with vibrations, it is a downside but wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Hope it helps 👍👋
Pozdrav!
I've got a small spoiler on the screen, loads of crash protection and soft pannier racks. It's my tough n ruff standby. Its slow but its good, very good.
Hello Daniel, regarding the vibrations at 5-6000 rpm, have you thought in the future to change for a 16 tooth sprocket like some CB500X owners have done ? Thanks for you great videos.
Hey, yes I was considering that option too, but few people reported they're going back on 15 tooth because of less torque in lower gears. I think personally the bike is very well balanced that's why I wanted to try other things before changing stock settings. 👍
@@shiftupadventure 16 tooth all day for me. Won't go back. Have done 26000 kms in 9 months. Do 12 hr sittings in one day, Australia is a big country. You mentioned the problem of wind buffeting from the screen, I also experienced this. Get 2 x 15 mm thick rubber " washers", remove the top two m5 stainless button bolts on the screen. Pack the screen to the frame with the rubber washers & rescrew same with new stainless m5 25mm button hex bolts to fix. Effectively, you have now changed the cant or the lean angle of the screen to a slightly more upright position. Problem immediately solved. This hack works for a cost of $7.00. Thank me by buying a homeless person a coffee on your travels. Stay safe, I love my cb500x. Edit: I'm 185 cm tall.
Guy from local Honda dealership told me best seller is red followed by white and then grey. I wanted grey, so yep I am. No issues with keeping it clean. 👍
Hi Daniel, great video and the views of Croatia are spectacular. Regarding wind protection, I ride without the screen , after trying both high and low positions I realized that the most comfort is without the screen completely
Hi David, thanks 👍 seriously? never thought of that, I've tried both positions too and honestly both are not doing a good job in protecting from the wind, I'll have to try without windscreen and see or get aftermarket windscreen but worry there is it might hit hand guards when on full tilt.
I have the same problem with buffeting, like you tried moving the screen up and down to no avail. Currently have the small added on top and that gives some improvement but on a windy day like today I was blown all over. So might try it without next time.

Really considering getting one of these as my first bike. Would be swapping the front sprocket to a 16 tooth and a 39 rear gear. Would still have have relatively high torque and a 12% better topspeed.
@@shiftupadventure ahh ok , i haven't heard great stuff about the top speed thats why i was considering changing both the sprockets. I would be using it as a daily commuter and our local highway speed is 130kmph.
We were at Makarska last week from Hungary. Back way to home we used only motorway (because the time limit), so we kept speed around 120-130 km/h...my cb500x was really stable/fixed, it was not any problem with handling. The fuel consumption jump over 3,5-4l/100 kms...but if I could keep the turns under 5500-5000 rpm the consumption decrease ~3-3,3 l/100 km. The windshield is really weakpoint of this bike...
Interesting... so if you bottomed on a particular bump let say off road... and then you put into the front forks a thicker oil... there is a good chance that if you hit the same bump at the same speed... there would be a good chance of not bottoming.
Thanks! Yeah heard that too. I'd go for NC750X if asphalt is primarily where I'll ride, if mixed terrain or offroad mainly, I'd go for CB500X because of a bigger front wheel and (if I'm correct) bigger clearance. Cheers 👍

Thank you, great review. I'm looking at one more for a cross country trip around Thailand. I have a few questions please Which tires do you have and can they be used a little for of road also? How much vibration exactly.. we're your hands numb? Which microphone are you using Eben you're making the video? Thank you and safe riding my brother ❤🙏
Thanks! Tyres are stock, Dunlop Trailmax, good 50/50 tyres I'd say. Vibration wise, yes I could feel thingling in my hands after few hours of riding, after I've added grip puppies no more issues with vibrations. About mic, I'm using Sony ECM CS3, ok mic I'd say. Cheers 👍👋
I prefer bikes with no windshields. Windshields are confusing, even on the Triumphs, as look as if they will protect but often they produce buffeting around the head. It’s a shame and i agree that manufacturers need to work on their windshields. Otherwise the CB500X is a great bike.
Have you tested riding with pillion? Would you recommend rinding 2up from Zagreb to Opuzen recimo (I am not interested in power, only comfort). Dobar i informativan kanal,čestitam samo naprijed
I'm 200, wife 150, only half loaded top case. Lack a bit of power if you need to overtake so plan ahead. Stock seat isn't the most comfortable, definitely need to upgrade. If finances and insurance prices wasn't an issue, I think I would've chosen the vstrom 650 for 2up. But for solo, love the cb500x!
I own a BMW 750GS.. though the bike good I think I am parking too much money on that. Alternatively I am considering cb500x. I am 5.8 in height, and my only worry is ability seat height.

Hopefully this will be my next bike, it seems to tick most of my boxes. You were talking about the wind gusts so why ride with only one hand on the bars?

This bike is stock for 70kg weight. If you weght 90 kg plus luggage, your have bith fork dampner only 2 levels up, and suspension adjusted to 2nd strong setting. I also changed the front fork oil with a better quality one, heavier, and i am very happy so far. Bike is handling excellent. Honda puts piss oil in those front forks. Really honda?
Great video. Why did you you buy this one if you already own BMW R1200GS ? Last year I bought the CB500C and I am noticing the same "issues" that you described here. Wind buffeting, handle-grips vibrations above 5000rpm and because the bike is lighter high crosswind can push you slightly left/right. But I am a small man, barely 60kg so this bike is probably the largest one that I can ride. I also had to lower it slightly to be able to ride it comfortably.
I have cd500x now for 5 years. I have stock wind shield (model 2013-2015). I also bought 2017 stock wind shield and it is MUCH worse!! I bought it because it looks more atractive and is a bit bigget - since my stock shield was not perfect I thought, it will be better felling in the wind. What a disappointment !! There was extremely helmet buffering and noise, that my ears was hurting me for 2 days. For me bigget screen was not sollution. Try to put 2013-2015 wind screen on. Lijep pozdrav iz Slo.
Yeah, for vibrations foam grips sorted that out, for wind blasts not much I could do except putting higher windscreen on since bike is lightweight. Thanks for the tip 👍👋

Thanks for sharing. Seems you have found the best solution for 5'10 - 6'0 rider. Comparing the WRS to the stock at high setting was brilliant. Just a small increase with improved width. Great review. Ordered one.
Great vid, fantastic bike I bought one a few months ago just under 3000 ks and I love it more every time I ride it
Great review, for your next trip try balancing your front wheel first, you may have less vibration in the handlebars.
Awesome, i just ordered same bike. Gonna visit Croatia with it one day! Cool vid! Thumbs up!
Thanks 👍 you'll have a wonderful time, Croatia is awesome for bikers 👋
Thanks for sharing 👍👍👋
Thanks very much 👍👋
Miss the landscapes of Eastern Europe. Went from Italy to Dubrovnik via Slovenia long ago, it was an amazing journey.
Along Adriatic coast? If so, that's one of the nicest rides in the world. 👍👋
@@shiftupadventure yes, from Switzerland then Verona, Bled, Ljubljana and then to the Adriatic and down to Dubrovnik. Amazing!
My first bike....1972 CB500 Four. Early in the in-line four history. I think the CB750 debuted in 1969. The 2020 is a great first bike as well.
It is I agree 👍👋
Bok, taman sam pogledao video.
Great review! All main points covered, awesome :)
Thanks mate 👍
Same here. I'm considering the KTM and CB500 , the CB with a sprocket change just seems like a much better option.

I do miss my backrest and the laid back riding position of my Vision
I will never let my Victory Vision go. There is nothing like a big bike for laid back comfort on a long trip.
But the V-Strom is much better than I thought it was going to be..
Buy the way I am getting 4.2 liters per 100km. But I run it very hard.
Thanks for the CB500 test
Rob, Canada
Hmmmm now I may be interested in the kawasaki. Do you love it?
@@thefittestyogi ..I am very pleased with it. A person needs to become accustomed to the top heaviness.
I hope this bike will fit me ^^
How serious is the handlebar vibration problem?
Thank you, it's an awesome bike I really enjoy riding it, but best if you can try before you buy 😁👋👍
Croatia is going to be on my list of places to visit if not for the stunning scenery definitely for the cheese and meat pastry it looked sooo good 👍
You could try one of those add on spoilers on the windshield might be all you need.
Very nice review. This is what i have searching for. I am planning to pass the A2 licence since I have seen the CB500X at the Honda dealership. I had the CB125R but I want to upgrade. But again, very nice video! Just subscribed !✌️ Safe roads !
Thank you my friend for kind words, great bike you'll love it (most likely). 👍👋
There's also a lot of wind hitting the helmet like the guy said, but there are ways to fix this problem.
vibrations don't really becomes meaningfully noticeable until about 120-130 imo
Would the vibrations you mention make you sell it or stop you buying another one? I am thinking of getting a new one, so still worth buying?
I've sorted out vibrations with handlebar risers and foam grips, no issues ever since. No, I'd still buy a bike, it's not that bad with vibrations, it is a downside but wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Hope it helps 👍👋
@@shiftupadventure thanks,, very helpful.

I saw that you had Vstrom as well, which one you prefer ?
What was the jacket you're wearing? I've had my 500X going on four years now. I consider it a jack of all trades.
Bravo. What have you changed or added to your 500x?
Is there a chance of outgrowing it quickly?
Pozdrav!
Good video, I love riding in Croatia. Especially that famous coast road.
I've got a small spoiler on the screen, loads of crash protection and soft pannier racks. It's my tough n ruff standby. Its slow but its good, very good.
Bravo. If this is your standby then what's your preferred or go to bike of choice and why?
Man, if this works I promise to buy a coffee to the 1st homeless person I meet on the road. 👍 Thank you very much for the tip.
@@shiftupadventure Guarantee that homeless person gonna love his caffeine fix.😊
The 16 tooth drops the vibe as you reach 100km at 5100 revs, makes 1st gear more usable. Good review.
Excellent comprehensive review. I look forward to future adventures and seeing some future modifications and refinements to the bike. I’m subscribed!
Thanks my friend, cheers 👋👍
Are you happy with the colour choice? Considering white and red were the other options?

Torque is what makes this bike shine and you'd have wrong speed readings on the dashboard. FYI just.
To slow down rebound or "bounce" try slightly thicker oil in the forktubes. This would also make the forks slightly more firmer too.
Interesting... so if you bottomed on a particular bump let say off road... and then you put into the front forks a thicker oil... there is a good chance that if you hit the same bump at the same speed... there would be a good chance of not bottoming.
Great video! Beautiful country! I'm between this and the NC750x once Japan start shipping bikes again. Inventory is pretty scarce here in the states
Thanks! Yeah heard that too. I'd go for NC750X if asphalt is primarily where I'll ride, if mixed terrain or offroad mainly, I'd go for CB500X because of a bigger front wheel and (if I'm correct) bigger clearance. Cheers 👍

Which tires do you have and can they be used a little for of road also?
How much vibration exactly.. we're your hands numb?
Which microphone are you using Eben you're making the video?
Thank you and safe riding my brother ❤🙏
As to vibrations they are minimal compared to other bikes this size
Cheers 👍👋

Have you ever ridden the previous generation of the CB500X and can you compare it with this one in a few short points?
Vibration? After Grip Puppies, try 16 tooth front cog. Great videos.

I prefer bikes with no windshields. Windshields are confusing, even on the Triumphs, as look as if they will protect but often they produce buffeting around the head. It’s a shame and i agree that manufacturers need to work on their windshields. Otherwise the CB500X is a great bike.
Yes, they need to do something about that I totally agree 👍
Thanks for the review! What helmet is that?

You were talking about the wind gusts so why ride with only one hand on the bars?

how do you think it could handle with a pillion on? exactly your setup but with an additional female person. Mentioning the fact that I will run withing the speed limit, 80 km/h on normal roads and about 100 km/h on highway. not into warp teleport thing. any buzz through the pegs/handlebars/seat at 100 km/h? i/m 174 cm with 65 kgs weight. clearly pillion will not exceed 55kg : )
Nice review sir... Love from India 🥰
Thank you sir 👍
Great review . Amazing scenery .😯
Yeah, same thing. I wanted something cheap and lightweight so I can ride a little more offroad without thinking to break something on expensive GS 🙂
I am five feet eight inches in height. Can I flatfoot on this bike.

Got my vote...👍😍looking to downsize in the future. Great vid/ review thanks for sharing. Just subs.👌🇬🇧
In India People tour 1000+kms tour on a 100 to 350cc bikes... Lolz people always making luxurious things being comfortable more than focusing on compact and practical needed things that can easily make the job done...
I agree, in Europe usually whatever is less than 800cc people will say it's underpowered 😁👍👋
@@shiftupadventure I have many video suggestions on UA-cam where 150cc killed people from their reckless riding...
nice...thanks for schering.
Thanks, you're welcome 👍👋
