    I'm intrigued by this. I've looked at several other YT sites, and none seem as comprehensive as yours, and you answer many of the questions I have. I have plans for a Benboy design, and I had a trailer frame fabricated to suit (my welding is poor). I want to put a different rear on as well. Nevertheless, I will be following your series closely! In addition to the frame I've already purchased the vent/fan and will be getting the doors shortly, and I agree about having a stockpile of timber (and fixings) so you don't have to keep running off to the store. One thing I did do was to write a list of features I wanted to include before I started (eg, under frame sliding drawers, deep cycle battery, charging points, 2 way cupboard, cup holders, lighting locations, etc).

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you Aussie! These videos should help along the way on your build... My first Teardrop was a Benroy style TD and it was a lot of fun! Now that you have purchased parts for your trailer, you HAVE to get building on it!! :) Good idea to make a list of your needs! That will be a lot of help when you get started!

    this is what I want, a Teardrop tiny trailer, I have a HF 4x8 and a 4x4 and thought about converting one

    • @Ira88881
      @Ira88881 5 років тому

      EliteGeeks I built one of those 15 years ago on a 4 x 8 HF trailer, but sold it. Here’s the problem I have with teardrops:
      The cabins are only good for sleeping, and the galleys are useless when raining. If I was going to build one again...
      I wouldn’t build a galley and use that extra space for the cabin. You now have room to throw some kind of set-up tent/shelter in there, along with all of your cooking gear, to set up when you get to your site.
      Yeah, TD’s look cool with their galleys, but all in all, the galleys are more bling than a practical asset.
      My current project is a truck camper with an 8’ bed, and I’ll start as soon as I can afford the truck!

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  5 років тому

      Perfect EliteGeeks! You have a good start with the HF trailer! It can be used for this build with only a slight modification, it'll have to be shortened up a bit, which is really easy. When I upload the video about the trailer, you'll see where the axle should be, and what the length needs to be. After that, a jigsaw and drill is all you need to get the trailer ready for the camper! Cheers!

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  5 років тому

      Totally understand! They are simply, a bed on wheels with the ability of no real setup. I used to tent camp but really never enjoyed it. Took too long to setup, all the extra stuff I had to bring a long (took up room), always forgot things at home... list goes on. These tiny campers eliminate most of that. Most items are always in the teardrop, so when you want to go somewhere... you can be on the road in 15 minutes! PLUS... I use a canopy at the back of the trailer to keep me dry when cooking! :) Someone just mentioned to me a truck camper build, hopefully you will be sharing your build on UA-cam!

    • @Ira88881
      @Ira88881 5 років тому

      OregonBatman My ideas are grander than my woodworking skills:
      I have my design...what I need, what I want, etc. ...but I’m having a cabinet maker build it!
      It’s going to be L-shaped, with the left run my kitchen, nothing significant on the right run for more space, and because I’m such a short guy, the horizontal run up near the cab window is my BED. No one ever does the bed on the horizontal, left to right, because they’re too tall!
      And by the way:
      I bought my bendy birch from Boulder too, but they screwed me up! Although it could have been rolled and boxed like yours, for some crazy reason, they shipped it FLAT sandwiched between two sheets of flakeboard!
      That normally wouldn’t be a big deal, but FedEx wouldn’t deliver to my HOUSE like that, so I had to go to Miami to pick it up near the airport. Good thing I had a truck, but what a pain.

    This is an amazing series... I'm completely new to this with limited experience and completely trust that your videos will guide me! You have inspired me! Thanks! Quick question - I was thinking of getting a pre-made trailer frame (4x8) to give me a slight head start. While I am confidant I can build the camper bit, I'm trying to avoid any welding related to the trailer frame (have no welding experience!). Only thing is it looks like trailer frame you are using may not be exactly 4x8? Thanks again :)

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  3 роки тому

      Hey Mitch! I think you have what it takes to build one of these for sure! Several people who built this trailer used the prefab 4 x 8 frame. You'll have to shorten it a bit in the back to make it look really good but super easy. My frame is a bit under the 4 x 8. Have any questions... shoot em my way, I'll do my best to answer!

    What is the advantage of using filon over using an aluminum sheet?
    My husband found .06” aluminum sheeting that they use on semi-tractor trailers from a tractor-trailer repair supply for $85 for a 49” X 110” sheet and filon is .045” and $179 for 5’ X 10’ sheet, other than it doesn’t dent?
    It’s more than twice as expensive.
    It’s for the sides of our teardrop camper.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  5 років тому +2

      Great question Rhonda! Generally, I think it is a matter of preference... but I believe the overall advantage would really be the resale value. As you mentioned, the aluminum dents extremely easy (the aluminum for my first trailer arrived pre-dented! LOL!) which takes away the looks of you trailer. Yes, more expensive... but that is why we pay more, longevity. The filon will be much easier to repair if damaged because you can repair small areas quickly. Aluminum, you may need to replace an entire panel, labor alone would set you back.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  4 роки тому

      Hi Mark! Several people have already built the teardrop using Harbor Freight frames. Modified it by shortening the length at the back and they look great! The weight of my trailer should come in at around 1000 lbs or a bit more. You will save some weight by using the HF frame. One of the builders decided not to use the filon and just stained and varnished the wood, looks beautiful and save weight there too! Hoping you join in , you'll have a lot of fun!

    Hi Al, on the bendable Birch plywood 2-ply sheets for inside wall curvature and outside roof - I get that they are 1/8" thick but how long are the sheets - are we talking 8 foot sheets? Just an FYI I've called Boulter Plywood Corp 3X's. They just filled an order for 30 sheets and it sounds like they are having a very hard time keeping up with demand. Do you know of any other source? I'm googling to locate another supplier but haven't located one yet.

      Hello Daves5wire! If you mean how can you get your ideas with measurements on paper, you will need a drawing program to sketch in. I use a product called Rhino3D to draw my designs and send to printer. If you are wanting the drawing I have, my email address is in description of every video. Drop me an email and I can send you my drawings. Hope that helps! Thanks for stopping by!

    how does getting home made RV trailers licensed and titled work in Oregon? In WA state you have to have L&I approve your detailed design plans for the trailer, then come to your home and inspect before you wall in the plumbing, electrical, propane lines, etc... then inspect it again when you finish to make sure it's per NFPA code 1192. Then you get an L&I insignia sticker and can finally take it to the state patrol to get a home made RV trailer title... Doesn't seem like you had to do that at all on your last travel trailer build?

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  4 роки тому

      Relatively easy process here... must have the receipts for materials used to build (axle, frame). Pay the fee, and all set!

      Hi Nathan, no plans for a 5 x 8.... the plans for the 4 x 8 can easily be modified by simply adding 12" to overall width

    Wow, the Filon is jaw-droppingly expensive for a sheet of heavy duty plastic! I thought it might be cheaper than the powder-coated aluminum rolls a lot of the other DIY guys are using, but quite the opposite.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  3 роки тому +1

      yes... exactly! That's why when shopping for an RV, two identical models, the one with filon will be more expensive than the aluminum sided RV. Filon is way more durable and easier to repair. Good stuff.... but, expensive! :)

(RE: 1/8" Benddable plywood Birch) He said they bend two ways, one is a barrel type and one sounds like it is lengthwise? He asked if the 4' comes together. I'm confused. I'm thinking I want it in the barrel shape. Is that correct? Thanks for your help. . . again!

      Hello Gregory! I haven't totaled the cost for the project just yet, That will come when I finish. I budgeted my project for around $3500 when complete. We will see how close I come. The most expensive parts of the project are the frame (w/axle) and the filon. Could save $1500 if no filon and just finished with a wood finish. Use an existing frame would also save money. This project is from scratch, no used parts. Hope that helps. Cheers!
