    Building my own project, I did a lot of research on UA-cam on the Filon gluing process and I never found one until today: thank you so much Al for that important video! I looking forward to seeing the gluing process of the front, top and back of the trailer in one shot!.

      The top challenge will be to glue the Filon on the front, top and rear of the trailer in one shot, with almost no possibility to reposition the Filon if the gluing didn't start straight.

    I wonder if this can be done neatly using contact adhesive like evostik? I remember using some contact adhesive that was spreadable like butter but I'm not sure what it was called.

    I m getting ready to do this to the outside wall on a 13' slide out. Great video. ... I'm still trying to figure out do I put the luan on the ground, glue the filon to it or do I attach the luan to the slide out and attempt to glue it while it is vertical... If I glue it to the luan before attaching it to the slide out, I'm not sure how to attach it as I don't want screw or nail holes in it.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  2 роки тому

      I would install the Luan to the slide out first, then with the help of one or two people, install filon. I would start at top and spray glue across and about 12" down. Stick filon at top first, then while friends hold the filon away from slide out, finish spraying the glue. While they hold the filon away, start at top and roll your way down. Be careful and not let the filon touch before you are ready!! IF YOU DO, don't panic... have a couple spray bottles of acetone ready, you can spray behind filon and gently peel it back... all will be well. :) Hope that helps!

    Hi Al, my husband and I ordered your plans and we have purchased supplies to start our build. One of my previous questions to you was how much your camper weighs and you said 1,000lbs. I want to pull mine behind a Prius so I'm trying to build as light weight as possible yet have a well constructed camper. We are wondering how much of the 1,000 lbs does your trailer by itself weigh? We are using a harbor freight trailer (all original) which weighs 250lbs so we are wondering if we are starting with less weight (than yours) at the git go. If you have ideas on how we might use your plans yet shave off some weight please let us know. Thanks so much!

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  2 роки тому +1

      Oh yeah... you will come in several hundred pounds lighter than mine. My trailer frame was built using 3/16" steel VERY HEAVY! Plus the axle weighed in close to 100 pounds. You will probably come in at around 750 lbs or slightly more, but not anywhere near mine! :) If I had to guess, my frame and axle was around 400+ lbs. Hope that helps, al

    I enjoy the simplicity of your video and the fact you share information and product name. But unfortunately the company you used for your filon and glue cannot ship the glue you used. I have been doing research to find an alternative to the HIGH $$ glues out there and I was so happy to see that the glue you were recommended was affordable. #M products are double what you paid. I also found during my research that regular Contact Cement will bond the Filon, it will not hold up to the various temperature changes for a normal RV, become brittle and looses holding strength. So if you happen to know of another product to use that would be great. Thanks.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  4 роки тому

      Thank you Jhinglouis Blea! Sorry to hear the glue can't be shipped... There is a product called Titebond3.5-gal. Greenchoice Advanced Polymer Adhesive and it is about $140 for 3.5 gallons (about $48 gal). It is meant for FRP panels so should work. Not sprayed... it is troweled on. Do a search to see if that product can be shipped to you, there is no hazmat or special shipping to deal with. Hope that helps! Thank you for stopping by and watching the video! Chow!

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  5 років тому

      Hello Susan! Filon must be attached with an adhesive... Filon is a fiberglass sheeting. You would float an aluminum sheet, yes, to allow expansion and contraction. Not so with fiberglass (filon).

    • @susanhighfield8284
      @susanhighfield8284 5 років тому

      I don't think that's 100% accurate. On the diy teardrop Facebook page I have read tons of times not to glue it. Jay floats filon on all his builds. Jay's way more knowledgeable than I am on this subject.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  5 років тому

      Not something I would try. I would be very interested in seeing how long something like that would last. Only product I know that is installed "floating" is aluminum sheeting. I have never heard of floating filon, and a search on google produces no results other than gluing. I would have to say, the correct method is gluing the filon.
