Quest for Native Trout - Portaging Into Remote, Wild Trout Waters for Spring Fishing & Camping
In this video, my brother Ted (@TheRealTedBaird) and I embark on an epic canoe trip through the rugged interior of Algonquin Park in the spring. We're on a quest for the park's elusive native brook trout, and despite the miles of upriver travel and countless tough portages, we're determined to find them. The journey is as demanding as it is beautiful, with breathtaking landscapes and some incredible fishing spots. We catch some nice brook trout and enjoy a few delicious fish fries along the way.
One of the highlights of our trip is meeting up with fellow UA-camr Xandar Budnick at a stunning campsite. Our routes through the park happen to cross paths, making for a great moment to share stories and experiences. The camaraderie and shared passion for the wilderness add a special touch to this adventure. On a more challenging note, my dog North gets injured during the trip, and we weren't sure what was wrong with him. Hearing him yelp in pain was tough, and we worried about having to carry him on the portages and lift him in and out of the canoe. Thankfully, North showed his resilience and started to get better as the days went on.
Despite the difficulties, the trip was incredibly rewarding, and I can't wait to share all the highs and lows with you in this video. So, join us on this unforgettable adventure in Algonquin Park, and don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more outdoor adventures!

Thanks for watching. I’ll share an update in North in the coming days but in short he continued to get better. Please let me know what your favourite part of this video is and I’d appreciate it if you would hit that subscribe button too. Have a good one!
Good to hear. One of the worst feelings in the world is knowing that something's wrong with a pet but not knowing what it is or if there's something you could've done. My vet once told me that in certain ways his job was more difficult than a normal MD's because his patients can't tell him where it hurts or what happened.
Hello Jim baird, and family. Ya tey from NM. We luv to watch ur video's, awesome. Aww North looks in pain. Ya tey means hello in Navajo language. Enjoy ur day with friend and North😊
Todo el vídeo veo They are fantastic, I like life outdoors, I was a Boy Scout as a child 👍
I loved the collective cheer you made when Ted landed that first monster
Congratulations on the cabin! Do hope North continues to improve and nothing serious comes from whatever happened there. Was great to spot a Xander in the woods too 😊
I'm glad to see North walking with no limps, he definitely doesn't feel good but he's healing. Good to see you and Ted camping together 👍
Only 16 minutes in the video. I love North and Buck. You are a dog lover and that is awesome. I hope North heals enough to walk the several portages you and Ted hiked. Hope North has a full recovery. He is an exceptional friend.
yes, I think so, too
Nothing is better on Outdoor UA-cam channels than you and Ted together on an adventure. U 2 r honestly the most beast iron man mode animals in the game. No one better to go thru a tough time like u had w North than Ted. Reminds me of the axe accident u had out in the bush.
They are impressive, and make great videos . Not to take anything away from them but you should check out Justing Barbour. He takes it to another level. Hope Jim does a interview with him when he is back from the expedition.
My favourite part was seeing you n Ted celebrate together, after he caught that fish! Put a huge smile on my face. Awful seeing North in so much pain 😢 hope all is ok with him n he’s healing well ❤
So great to see the brothers of exploration together again, hope North is well. Another banger video, thank you
What a fantastic trip with Brother Ted! Glad North is doing better! Huge congratulations on acquisition of the remote property! Looking forward to the repairs and improvements. My favorite part of this video was all of it! Thanks for sharing with us all JB and always #keepitburning Brother!
Will do, ha we have some fix up stuff to do for sure and stuff to build too.
My favorite part was your when you told us that you were all set with buying your camp! Your family will be making so many memories as your boys grow up!
I’m so happy we’ll get to experience all those wonderful memories with you all!❤
Well thanks very much! It was a good feeling
Right where I was born and raised. Thanks for bringing back memories Jim.
Please please keep your audience posted on North's health. We love that beautiful and smart dog as much as you and your family do. He is one heck of a great dog and he loves his family so much!! Thank you for another fine video Jim and Ted.
Congratulations on getting the new cabin!! 👏 can't wait for all the adventures that you & your family will have there! ❤
Jim and Ted together again!!!! Yyyyyeeeeeaaaahhhh!!!!!! Poor North. I hope he's doing better now!! 🙏 ❤
Congrats on the camp ownership, great videos to come from there.Jim you guys are the tanks to go through all the slugging.Glad North is on the mend.Great video!🇨🇦👍
So glad " the Boys are back": you & Ted always make good memories together. Hope North is back to snuff before you know it.
What an experience! thanks so much for sharing it here!
It’s a Budnik! He is so funny. Love his solo stuff.
Haveing you and Ted back on adventure ❤ so glad North is getting better ❤
Well, you already know how I feel about Star Wars, thank you for sharing brother!
My favorite part? Oh, the whole thing. Love your authenticity. I am a big fan of Lost Lakes, that’s how I found you. New subscriber here. Love the style. Love the music. Love you signing. Just seem such a normal guy with a lovely family. Peace bro. Heading to the Adirondacks paddling in August. No bugs.
Very nice, thanks a lot for coming over and giving my channel a shot. Glad you like it and have a blast on your August trip.
Fantastic trip and video Jim. The bond you and Ted have is so awesome, reminds me of what I have with my brother and why we try to make sure we do a winter and summer bothy adventure in the Scottish Highlands every year without fail. Keep on rockin' in a free world lads :D
Sorry to see North injured. Thankfully Dogs heal quickly.
It would appear so, ya that was scary. Thanks a lot for watching.
"In your face Budnick"🤣🤣.......North was looking much better at the end, hopefully he's all good now.
Great episode.
Big thanks!
Hey Jim, I am not a vet, but it appears that North has swimmers tail. It happens when dogs swim in cold water. It can be painful for them but will go away with time. I didn’t read all the comments so maybe you already know. Awesome videos, enjoy watching them.
Thanks a lot and I think hire right. He wants swimming a ton but he was wading in the water on that long rapid and the water was cold
Is that why my 8 yr old won't let her tail get wet? Crazy, never knew about that.
Completely agree. Cold water
Congratulations ✨️ 🎊 👏
good luck with the cabin man you deserve all the happiness for you and your boys, it’s an inspiration the way you include those little dudes in your trips
Thanks very much!
Love the call of the Baird, YEAH!!! Says it all.
Hey Jim and Ted, you guys are BEASTS and y’all keep me on the edge lol. I pray that North is ok and Happy Mother’s Day Tori! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
Thanks very much and ya, north seems to have made a total recovery
Congratulations on the cabin
I love these videos! Love North!
Prayers for north !!!
Thanks!
Awesome trip!, I loved it! Please keep us posted on North❤😊
Not sure if you have one but a doggie medical kit with certain meds that dogs tolerate is a great idea. Your vet can hook you up with anti-inflammatory pain meds, even antibiotics and allergy meds if needed. I know my dog received a sting from something and with a very swollen muzzle was in a lot of discomfort. Thank heavens I had some meds with me. A lot of human medications are toxic to dogs so make sure you get your vets advice. Always good to have prophylactic medications just in case, especially on trips in remote places. Thanks for sharing your wonderful adventure!
North is a trooper for sure 👌
Just Ted and you being you. I introduced my mother to UA-cam and your channel recently and she loves the commentary which so clear to listen to. The Canadian bush makes her want to travel there. Alas she is 98 and frail, but being able to see it through your eyes and voice makes it special for her.
bet she watchescurse of oak island also 😁
Great video I love seeing you brothers spending time together. Although i was so worried about north..I thought the way he was huntched up he might have a stone or bladder infection. I think my favorite parts are the fishing, food, landscape, sound of the water hitting the paddles, you talking about the history....ok I like it all ❤
Nice, thanks a lot. Ya, hard to think about it with north hurt. I was feeling a lot of anxiety and concern out there but it’s amazing fine now
Wow, just came across your videos last week Jim and I’ve literally binged watched everyday since. You are inspiring me to get out there on the lakes and rivers in Ontario. I didn’t realize such beauty existed just a few hours away from where I live. 💪🏼
I’m praying North isn’t in too much pain and hopefully by the end of this video he’ll be up and running ❤
Thanks a lot, ya it seems he’s base film recovery. We think he just put out his back
Loves this whole trip with Ted and you doing your thing!!
Entertaining and gorgeous scenery!
Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Our pleasure!
My favorite part of your video Jim is you tackling the beaver dams, especially when you went for a swim. LOL. It's not a true Jim Baird adventure without you taking a little dip 🤭I also really like it when you sing or make up songs, I always look forward to that. Seriously though please keep us in the know about North and his injury, my heart blead for North's pain as well as yours. I've been there. Take care, looking forward to your next adventure as always
Really enjoyed watching this video Jim. Glad North is ok. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Thanks a lot, ya it seems he’s made a full recovery. Not sure what happened but maybe he got caught up in some vines behind camp just messing around
Well done North tracking those many portages injured ❤ loved how you were cared for along the ways.
Congrats Jim, you and Tori worked so dang hard to pursue your next adventure on your new…let’s say ‘Camp Baird homestead’ somewhere safe forward away from the world around you.
Love the emotion bro as theirs nothing more than hard work which pays dividends x
I hope North heals well and that his injury is not worse than first thought. It's great to see the Baird brothers on an adventure, even with the arduous portages and long paddling I loved how this trip felt relaxed and fun. Jim the way you chat to the camera (and us) brings the adventure to life, thankyou.😊
Jim & Ted’s excellent adventure 😉😝
Once again Jim and Ted paddling up stream. Really nice Brookies there. I guess we need to get really deep in the woods to catch fish like that. Good luck with the cabin Jim. That's a big deal! Thanks for taking us along.
My #1 go to UA-cam channel when I’m on my exercise bike!
Awesome, happy to hear it!
Best channel on the internet! Man, I hate to see North hurting. Let us know how things go with him. Nothing but good vibes go out to all of you.
Hyia Jim & Ted, I'm so sorry for North's suffering & happy he improved. Its good to see u both together again. Jim u are soo dramatic; Tori's right you’re a drama King, u make me laugh its such fun. This was a tricky adventure in many ways. I'm facscinated on how u carry yr canoe's, I enjoy that, the scenes of u & Ted on the waters, also the environment, cooking & of course knockout scenery. Thank-you Both❣️
that fact that you're asking yourself if you need to do some soul searching, is doing soul searching so, you're good. Cheers Baird bro's.
Nice seeing you two back out in the wild together again... Good stuff
Ted always has better luck Don't lose it!
He did great with a couple big ones. He has a slides Mepps two orange dot while I had one with no skirt but he just also casted in a place I didn’t figure out to cast in. That being said, he does not always have better luck lol
Poor North! I felt anxious for him as well. it's always a little gut-wrenching when these dogs of ours are injured. Favorite part was the "in your face, Budnick!"
Haha! Thanks a lot. The vet thinks he had something called swimmers tail. It goes away in a couple days typically but can be painful. It can happen from being in cold water a lot so, Maybe when we were wading that long rapid.
Awesome! Nice to see you Ted! Hope North is okay!
I tried to go from Big Bob to Cedar via Nipissing, the day of ice out. Bailed at the bridge, crazy water speeds and tight alders, man. Then did a similar trip to this instead. Good times!
So, who the hell is that Xander Buttnick? 🤔😄 Great trip Jim, thanks for sharing
He’s another UA-camr
Thanks Jim, for another great video. I loved watching when you ate the "breadless bacon sandwich". That's one of my favourite sandwiches!!!!!!
Bahaha! Yes, for health reasons…Glad you liked that.
Парни привет из россии очень хорошее видео ,природа похожа на нашу ,спасибо вам ,я тоже скоро на каяке отправляюсь в путишествие ,и удачи вам
Thanks a lot and enjoy your trip! I’m going to visit Siberia / Kamchatka when things get figured out with the war and international relations.
Добро пожаловать
Another great UA-cam with a Xander bonus visit! Mondays for Baird Country podcast releases -- yes, I have listened to all 18 so far!! Trout for Mother's Day almost as funny as the Beware of the Dog House UA-cam video!
Great video North looking a bit South hope he's ok❤❤ ☺️
Haha, well thankfully he is but I was definitely worried!
Glad norths all good yeahhhhhhhh looking forward to north going east and west....♥️♥️♥️😉
I saw Zander doing a trip starting in Canada and going to the start of lake Superior. He was with 5 other guys. Sounds like your trip. I found you from watching Shawn James's channel. I enjoyed your video but I was upset about North getting injured. I hope he gets a clean bill of heath. 🙏
He is good! Ya, I was on that trip and will have a video out from it on Thursday. The route was in Canada as we paddled a tributary to Lake Superiors northern coast line and then followed it back to a road. Most of the north side of the lake is in canada
Great video as always Jim ,
Love to see it you in the UK
Portage’s are few and far between.
Ted was getting a million views by videoing his camping trips, hopefully we will see him posting soon , especially with his brother!
You will!
Seeing those big brookies..is hard to beat..but outdoor life ..its all good!
Im very happy for you jim on the purchase of the property, you deserve every bit of it,you and your family will enjoy this for years to come, was so nice to see both you and ted together, been a while, hope north recovers fully, your channel is number 1 for me,all you’re content is exactly what i love most in life, nature and outdoor living, hopefully i run into you one of these days ,cuz i live a cpl hours north of you, keep it up 👍👍
Awesome Trip you Guys and please more Puppy Sniff Sniff that was so Funny I hope Tori seen that Congratulations on Camp
Favorite part: "God*$# these beaver dams!". So funny! Best laugh I've had in a while!
Haha, glad you got a kick out of that! Thanks for watching
This was a very nice video…one of your best ones. I love all your content but for this video, I think your genuineness and beloved banter and commaderie between your brother, Xander and yes, the poochkins (hope all is well with him) really shone through. I was wondering where your brother Ted has been. So happy to see him back. I often have all of your content on playlist mode as I fall asleep. This includes others such as lost lakes etc. this is the first time I have ever commented on any video on UA-cam…just enjoyed from the quiet sidelines for all these years and will happily go back to silent mode after this. I felt moved to extend my genuine appreciation for you and your whole family. You deserve far more appreciation and love on these UA-cam streets than you have received thus far. And by that I mean more subscribers. P.S. your sense of humour was on point in this video as well.
Well thanks a lot for the great comment, super encouraging and I’m glad you enjoyed the video so much, I’ll keep making them! Have a good one.
Great video. Best thing is North
Looked like a wicked time boys 🤟
It was, thanks a lot
Favorite part….eating those trout. Love trout.
Poor North. I hope he is okay. I think what I like the most is the scenery. It’s so beautiful in Canada. Thanks for taking us along. I just watched your wife’s ladies trip. That was really cool too. 😊
Awesome, thanks for checking out her vid. North seems to have made a full recovery
I love living vicariously through y'all. Nice to see Ted. too, love me some Ted. Jim you and Tori are the bomb and congrats on the cabin and getting yer ol' boat back. I already saw Xander's video and have just been waiting to see your version. What Fun! what a wonderful life and thank y'all for sharing it with us. Kiss Wesley and Huddy for me! Loved Tori's video too., the gals can hike!
Greetings from Scotland......I appreciate the "wee dram" comment!
Thanks! I love scotch and would love to visit sure time. I have some scottish ancestry if you go back far enough.
Sorry that North had an injury and hopefully back to rights by now, there are so many aspects and moments that make this video so great, along with the scenery, the fishing, skill set and meetup of Budnick, I'd say singing and paddling and the story with it was a fav, you guys really know how to put forth an amazing wilderness adventure, true grit and passion, loved it and the positives even when faced with obstacles, congrats on the cabin
❤ your videos brings me back to the days when I went out in the woods for adventures 👍your videos are very calming and real 😊thank you
Just another fun one to watch you two! And very relieved North is so much better, phew...I'll ask Patti to look at some footage and see if she can pick anything up about what he might have done and let you know. In the meantime I am sure you have seen the vet and hoping for good news. A blast seeing you and Ted together again and also loved the emotion with news you got the cottage! Like you, my grandparents had a lake house in the Northeast Kingdom of VT about 2 miles from your border and it was there that I fell in love with lakes, rivers, loons/ forest wildlife and paddling, etc. To share this gift with your own kids and family is as special as it gets 💜 I know you all will treasure your times there, congratulations on the dream come true Jim! Cheers, Barret
I enjoyed seeing you,Ted and Zandar meeting up and sharing some good old camaraderie. You all concern about North was touching. Our pets are family also.
Camp Baird will rock ! Congratulations
Absolutely and that was our CB handle growing up.
The epic adventure continues! Thanks
The whole video was great.. Happy everyone made it home, happy North is doing better.. I’m still looking for the vanishing point.. The Movie ‘ИEFAЯIOUS’ was pretty good;
N-backwards=41 + R backwards 81, therefore 4181= Strongs 4181=POSSESSION..
There are some AMAZING aurora trout lakes around Lady Evelyn Lake. Particularly close to where Maple Mountain is located. Have you ever done that portage up to maple mountain?
I have but have never fished for Aurora trout there. They’re only open in the fall is that correct?
@@JimBairdAdventurer I’m not too familiar with present day regulations but we used to fish for them in the fall while moose hunting up there. Easier for us to access those lakes during the winter months back in the 90’s… I highly doubt anyone fishes them anymore because of the sheer remoteness of these lakes and not many people know about those lakes and the fish that are in them. My grandfather and his brother knew ALL those lakes like the backs on their hands… so many good memories from Lady Evelyn Lake!
Great to see you got the "CAMP" Hope North improves as he has already during the trip. Watching from Niagara Region
I hope you give us an update on North.
Nice tackle box Big Jim! Glad to see the Cyclone spoon caught you one at least! I hope the stuff serves you well. You and your bro together is cool.
Absolutely and I think the two bigger ones Ted caught were on one you sent him too, a dressed black furry orange dot. That’s out go-to. I didn’t have the dressed one and we chalked it up to that being why Ted caught a couple bigger ones than me. The Cyclone was good too for sure and I actually gave one to Xandar Budnick who was not able to catch anything where I was catching several using it.
@@JimBairdAdventurer you guys are bad ass
I hope you’re cabin is such a cool learning retreat for your family I’m trying my best to get one too
Great video felt so bad for North though hope he is ok.I love your & Ted's excitement when you catch fish.🙂🇨🇦👍👍👍👍👍🛶Congrats on the camp so exciting.
Spent 6 months touring Canada this time last year, also thought i had an inner ear problem/ loosing my marbles. Only just now learnt it was the male partridge... Thanks Jim 👍
Supppppppppper !!!!!!!
Perfect video length, Jimbo.
Nice seeing Teddy, too.
Much appreciated
Whenever you put your arms in the air and holler, "yeeaahhh", it makes me miss Huddy. 😊❤🎉
Once again thanks for another great video❤️. My favourite part was how you took care to help North when he was a hurting. Next to that was how you managed paddling against the current.
Good seeing you and Ted back on the water. Brook trout fried in bacon grease. Delicious. It will be interesting as to what happened to North.
Been missing your adventures being busy with mine but glad I got to catch up! Nice. Having great adventures!! Love it man!
Keep going. Thanks for the ride. Neat to run into friends and share some time.
Yeaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!! 🔥💯👍🏼🎣
Thanks for sharing
Awesome video!! So cool to run across Xandar Buttlick on the trail once again!
Ya, it was great, think his name is actually spelled buttdick thought
@@JimBairdAdventurer😂😂😂
Hiya Both, Ted was soo funny interviewing Xzander in the morning😄. Ooh Congratulations Jim on you & Torri getting the Cabin now you'll b able to live yr dream, I'm soo happy for you❣️
Jimbo North is acting great now !!! He must of healed inside or what ever happened to him !!! Loved the fish & smoke I have SMELL A VISION haha giggle !!! LOVE to remember back when I did that also !!! Oh GOD it would be GRAND !!! SHAWN & OUR CALI were GREAT there !!! She is a Great PUP indeed !!!
Good vibes brother! love it !
Glad you got the cabin.
Hi Jim, regarding North: Patti looked at some footage and thinks he tweeked his back for sure. Her canine PT mentor is Canadian and suggests checking out Laurie Edge Hughes at Four Legs Rehab Inc. Some other thoughts are having Carprofen (basically Advil for dogs ) on hand as well as Fido Pro Air Lift rescue sling/ lightweight backpack carry. The yelping when you picked him up is more indicative of a back vs. extremity issue. Supplements to keep him in great shape (Patti could hook you up with companies to sponsor you perhaps) “Yumove” prescription NOT online and “Myos” (again, Patti can get you 20% off on this one) which builds muscle and is fertilized egg in powder form. Our Husky mix takes this. All our dogs take Yumove. Maybe add freeze dried meat to kibble (we use Stella and Chewy’s). Massage to his spine would be very helpful. All the best and Patti would be happy to speak with you directly anytime with questions/ concerns! Go North 💜 Barret
Thanks a lot for looking into that. From what we could tell, we think it was his back too. He may have gotten tangled in some vines behind our camp site and pot it out struggling to get free. He seems to have made a total recovery though. The vet couldn’t see anything. He’s been going for 5 to 10k runs beside tori on her bike nearly every day but we’re still cautious. It’s been nearly a month since the injury and he’s only two years old so that is good for healing
@@JimBairdAdventurer No problem at all and just so glad to hear he is his healthy self!❤️
Great trip!
