33-Day Hard Core Survival Expedition Across the Labrador & Northern Québec Wild - Full Documentary: In 2011 I was commissioned by Field & Stream magazine to complete and film three large scale adventure expeditions in the Canadian North. This was one of them and it has been my most challenging canoe trip to date. It was a true wilderness, wild camping trip as we were well off-grid on remote rivers. We were fishing for brook trout, land locked salmon, lake trout and char and the fishing was world class. We also had to get other food from the land through foraging berries and harvesting wild geese. about one third of the calories we took in came from the land. We started via the train from Labrador City to Schefferville, Québec which took us off of the road system. From there, we began our paddling trip on Lake Atticamagen, portaging over a height-of-land into the Du Pas River. We'd then undergo a challenging string of portages that would take us across another height-of-land between the Du Pas and George Rivers and we'd even travel down an unnamed river before reaching the George. Then, we'd go up the mighty George which was no easy task and we'd continue on through large wilderness lakes until we crossed yet another height-of-land into the Adlatok River. The Adlatok is a wild and extremely remote river that flows into the Labrador Sea. We were charged by a bear before our second two-day plus portage on this trip, we ran countless raging whitewater rapids, many of which were very boulder-strewn and we traveled a large distance on the Labrador Sea where we found ourselves windbound. We also sailed the Labrador Coast aboard the Northern Ranger once out trip ended.

What an expedition! The 5+ pound brookies were definitely my favorite part
Have you ever thought of submitting these videos to film festivals such as the Banff Mountain Film Festival? You should be getting some recognition for these.
love seeing the gearvolution.
Wow, amazing adventuring
@@wesleymagee4448 Mine too! Thanks for watching
Amazing!! what an incredible trip and memory I think my favourite of all time not because it was easy but because it was hard !👊
love you teddy boiiii
when the boys were nothin but piss & vinegar !!😤😤😤
Quality journey but so dangerous you crazy guys...
Hope your eye wasn’t too seriously damaged Ted! A pretty rough start to such an serious undertaking!
Truly living,, fantastic video
Started this at 11:30pm thinking id watch just a bit before bed but here almost 2 hours later almost done. Man this video is engaging. Incredible trip you guys are the real deal.
They are the real deal. You did well too XB in your latest journey ie: 4 day camp.
Much appreciated Xander! Thanks for dropping by and giving it a watch. Hope you're good.
@@dthomas4087 Thakns
@Papa's Garage Much apreciated
So are you Xander! ✌️ Luv watching your channel too.
You know, Jim, if they could play this documentary in schools at the elementary level, what an inspiration it would be for young kids. How many young boys wouldn't love the sense of adventure!
Hope you and the family are doing well, including the puppy!
What a sexist comment. Newsflash Liz and I'm surprised you said "many young boys wouldn't love the sense of adventure, you must or you wouldn't have watched this video. Girls and women love doing this. It is not just a male occupation. Tori is a prime example.
@@lindalow2322 Most men do this kind of adventure with other men, I don't think he meant to offend women including me who has been hunting and fishing for 50 years. Just saying
I don’t know Liz, how many girls would enjoy it?
That was fantastic. Loved the fireside chat, your comfortable and engaging storytelling, and good editing. The best.
Loving all the Baird bros content lately, some of the best outdoor stuff on UA-cam in my opinion. Really enjoyed this documentary style 👍
You so deserve many more than just 103K subscribers. Even your older videos are awesome.
What a phenomenal adventure. I never quite understand why Canadian's put so much money and time into international travel when we have these spectacular landscapes essentially in our backyard.
This is some really awesome footage. I love that it feels like you guys are yelling at the camera! The amped up nature adds to the feeling of danger you get watching. Watching Ted scooping that salmon on to the rocks is so perfect. Great video and keep it coming-- you guys are awesome!
Thanks a lot, ya we needed the food and Ted just wanted to get it as far away from the water as possible lol. Thanks a lot for watching.
IMHO, the best rapids, most challenging portages, most incredible scenery/wildlife, and most black flies yet. KUDOS to all 4 of you, glad that Ted’s eye made it through it all.
This looks like the hardest canoe trip I’ve ever seen in my life. Dealing with the mosquitos, dragging your canoes miles through bogs and rocks. I couldn’t say I’d ever be cut out for this.
haha, ya it was up there for sure. The hardest canoe trip I've ever done anyways.
What a tough and awesome trip. Cangrats to everyone involved back in the day.
Nate
Wow, you guys rocked it, loved every moment of this documentary, brilliant narrative by Jim and special commentary by the guys as well, and so entertaining
Thanks!
You have a great memory Jim ! Explaining your trip from 2011 like it happened yesterday . It's nice to see a little vintage film on youtube once and a while but really the shots you guys got are pretty epic for the time . Excellent editing and very nice words at the end to sum up the trip . Very much enjoyed !
Watching this was like a ticket back to my childhood. I used to live in Labrador for 4 years and never forgot the magic of the land. Thank you for sharing this epic adventure, you guys rock!
Amazing place to have lived! Thanks a ton for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
You guys all did an amazing job, especially under duress, such as not having enough to eat and having to share a very small fish at the end. You kept it together, always looking at the positive side of things. The footage was incredible, especially the canyons and waterfalls. I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. Thank you.
Agreed 100 percent👍👍👍Loved this video and the guys in it!!!
The Baird Brothers knock it outta the park again! This time with baby faces. What an awesome trip. Thanks for sharing it with us all.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for tuning in
Awww, just a couple of Baird cubs! …It’s not difficult to understand why you two appear so capable and comfortable to this day - you’ve been earning experience points on some pretty epic trips for years! Pretty wild adventure, thanks for sharing! ⛰🌊🛶
You’re very welcome, thanks a lot for tuning in. We definitely gained more skills from this one but definitely not the kind of thing you want to head out on without a lot of previous experience either.
@@JimBairdAdventurer No doubt! Makes me realize just how long you’ve been at it!
I got burnt out on 25 days and stopped watching your channel. A few days past I said go back to Jim and this is my reward. Thanks Jim Wayne
I enjoyed this documentary and will be rewatching it a couple of times at least.
You and Ted look like brothers in this video, more so than recent.
I got a kick out of all the clowning around the four of you were doing under some very stressful and difficult days.
Hope all is going well for you and your family.
Lol this is a great look at how you and Ted looked back them. With age comes beauty. 😉 You were both so serious then. Young or old I'd still watch you to the end. ✌️ ❤️
Thanks a lot, I was actually being commissioned by a magazine and my editor who was taking part in teaching be about video and doing some editing wanted me to act all series and to the point. Terrible directing.
@@JimBairdAdventurer You were definitely in character. It was really a great video. ❤️
More experience now. They would never attempt that journey again ever...xx And your ugly x
An incredible experience, thanks Jim
Hey John, no prob, thanks for taking the time to check it out.
Absolutely enjoyed this. I love that cheer you guys have, can't help but smile when I hear it. Breath taking falls along the way was my fav.
Once I started watching your epic adventure I couldn't stop. You all had full measures of pleasure, pain, awesome fishing and priceless memories. Plus you got to share it with the world, a bonus.
Great video. I love how you explained what was going on. This was before you had camera attached to your canoe. You are a good storyteller
This is why we keep watching Jim's videos, I'm totally addicted.
WOW this was epic looking back to when you and Ted were much younger had not realized you have been doing these wilderness adventures this long. what an incredible adventure this was and what you had to go through, Extremally challenging for sure. would have been awesome to come across those fellas constructing the healing lodge at the cold war base, how nice of them to set you all up for the night and to feed you what a break that would have been . Loved the footage of the landscape and wildlife , however the bear would have freaked me out. The waterfalls were amazing, I just cant say enough I thoughly enjoyed this video.
Wow, thank you again for taking us places we may never be able to travel to! Also, thank you for recognizing the First Nation tribes! How cool was that man!
with everything i saw in this video /documentary ,you sir have tought me more than i ever learned in history class ...koodoo,s to you and your brother and your friends for such an epic ,nailbiting episode ...love love love what you do ...
the 25 days series was amazing and now this love it!
Thanks!
Absolutely incredible! Thank you for sharing with us and it was fascinating to watch and hear what you went through
Jim, this trip was not for the faint of heart. Idk how you guys did it, but this was one of if not the best documentary I have ever seen on you tube. You guys impress the heck out of me. I love doing big trips. I have been to the boundary waters on the border of Canada and we portaged and canoed for 15 hours straight and it was nothing campared to this. Thank you for this.
Hi Jim,
you and your friends are unbelievable. Thankyou for shäring your jurney with us.
ML AnDi
STOKED!!! in one of my favorite places, when you guys were green behind the ears! you look so young! 🙏🏼
I am a 67 year old woman with serious arthritis. I love the great outdoors. Thanks for going and sharing.
Air strip/healing lodge part is the coolest thing I’ve heard of in a long time. And happy that the land is being returned to its initial use by the indigenous people.
Indeed, ya the DEW Line sites across the north were a major Cold War project by the Americans across Canada. The lodge is a great initiative for sure.
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this documentary. Firstly as a post-Alone subscriber, I had no idea that you'd been doing trips like this for so long, what fantastic experiences you must have built in that time. Did you have a job 11 years ago? Or was it still UA-cam funded back then? It's just fantastic you've been able to build and continue to live this life. Keep at it, can't wait to see what epic adventure you have planned for this year! Matt.
Truly incredible journey and story! I really want to experience the north country myself. Thank you for sharing your epic adventure.
You’re welcome!
Wow 😳. Thank you for sharing this with us 💕
Some awesome footage on a epic trip! Thanks for sharing with us!
You’re welcome! Thanks for taking the time to check it out
thanks for recording, epic adventure, really inspiring me to step up and push our own game, truly had no ideal watching you guys on Alone, what prior strength you had built from journeys like this. grateful for your perseverance!
I just finished watching this amazing and epic journey on the big screen. I kept saying wow, then wow again. The scenery, wow. The experience the four of you were getting from this, wow. And the fish, wow. Thanks for sharing this.
Amazing trip. You two and your friends are so strong. I would not have the courage to go that far into the outback.
Thanks a lot, ya we had experience and learned a lot of skills in the years before this
@@JimBairdAdventurer These adventures must have taught you guys a lot about humility and self confidence at the same time.
Wow!! I am speechless! Epic is an overused word. This was epic. It was nice to see your adventure from 2011! Thank you!!
It was great to watch this in a director’s cut movie format!
Absolutely amazing trip
Cant wait to watch it,i'm heading for a 10 day camping trip, fishing ,i will watch it in the wilderness,i'm sure it will be epic again👍👏
Nice, have a great trip
What an adventure! Life goals. Too late for me I suppose so I'll just keep watching your vids. You guys are awesome. 👍👍
Wow how truly amazing, what an epic journey, cannot get enough of your videos, well done, is there another journey in the near future with the four of you? You all got along great to achieve and to pull this off, do you stay in touch with the other two, bottom line can’t wait for another video, love what you do, and yes I am subscribed to your channel and tell all that is of the same mindset, thanks again
All the stuff you have shared is a treasury. Amazing
Thanks a lot
This is incredible. You all have balls of solid rock. I know an awful lot of people who could not have done this. I was asking myself if it is something I could have done when I was younger and in "outdoor shape," and I really am not entirely sure. The fishing was phenomenal on this trip! Man you landed some monsters...love the changes in the species too. The portaging though? Oh Wow...never seen that much portaging on one trip but kudos for sucking it up and making it happen. This was just the ultimate tripping video...I feel privileged to see it! Much respect to my Canadian bretheren!
I've been waiting a long time for a documentary like this ! Great job Jim, I love the commentary !
Thanks a lot! Glad you like it.
Damn Jim, what a trip! Thanks for the amazing view into some of the most remote parts of our beautiful country. Loved the documentary style of this video too, was a hell of a was to present it.
Better than anything on TV. Great stuff!!!
Holy smokes. This was crazy. The brook trout were insane. Lifetime memories. Thanks for sharing. Loved the fireside narration.
They were amazing for sure...thanks a lot!
What was my favourite part of this trip ? F… me, what wasn’t ? This was just incredible. If you only did one trip , this was it . People say this trip or that was the trip of a lifetime .
This was the trio of a lifetime . You guys were as legendary as the Voyageurs, hands down.
Beautiful Labrador, what an amazing accomplishment! Well done boys and well told Jim ...really enjoyed fire side chat format would make for a great weekly by weekly program ... still don't understand why you guys and your talented families haven't been picked up by CBC /Discovery Channel... 🎥👍👍
Thanks a lot!
Jim, thank you so much for providing this video and doing such a great job of narrating it. It was really cool to see you and Ted from back in 2011. Even back then you guys did such a great job of taking us on such an exciting and interesting journey. I watch every one of your and Ted's video's and feel that this is the best one ever. I cannot believe the four of you endured such harsh conditions with the black flys and the many kilometers where you Portaged the canoes and equipment. You guys are tough and are up for anything! Thanks again for releasing this and narrating something that happened over 10 years ago. You have an excellent memory to remember all of that. Looking forward to many more of your and Ted's journeys. They are.a great escape from this crazy world we live in. Lou 😁🙏
Pure, true adventure from The Adventurer! Simply incredible!!!
i never knew you had documentary's going back decades ago! bro you have aged!!! life surely is beautiful, and much respect to you for still providing this awesome wholesome content for us adventurers who have the same passion as you! -Arin from Palmdale.
Wow ! I'm lost for words. That was so much fun and exciting to watch. Epic trip !!! Well done boys, and thanks for digging in the vault to show us this long past adventure.
Really enjoyed this. You guys were great then and are great now! Thanks so much.
Jim, Ted, Will, you’ve done it again had me on the edge of my seat thank you 👍🧢🇬🇧
That was an awesome video , I enjoyed every minute of it . I have been to Labrador several times and what you guys did was insane but what a memory for sure . Great job of recording this for us all to see !
Absolutely loved this, Jim! Fantastic storytelling!
Thanks a lot!
Epic journey man! Favorite part was the feast at the end of the rapids! I was getting worried you all would starve. Great adventure thanks for the ride
this is a great way to spend a raining day, great show and a outstanding ,loved the fishing, but just watching you all having the fun, was great!!!!! thank you Jim, i have been watching your video for 2 days now and loving them all, my hats off to you sir,
Hands down best trip dude!!! I see why it was your favorite!! Thanks for taking us a long as usual! You sir have taught us all how to "give er'" with this throwback trip
What an amazing trip that was!!! I loved the whole thing but those trout...never have seen them so big!!! Thanks for sharing this!!
You’re welcome!
Best Adventure video I have see in a long time. Coming from a long time Adventure Racer, it doesn't get much better then this.
What a journey!!!! Beautiful water falls, wild life was amazing, fishing was exceptional!!! Your rapport, and comradeship was outstanding and you all were so young back then!! Congrats!!
Thanks a lark for watching this! Gear comment, I appreciate it. Ya, this was such an awesome journey.
Oh to be young again !! thanks awesome show !! Lets go Brandon !!
Stunning Trip, things we can accomplish in our youthful days, because as everyone learns they are numbered!
Amazing - in all the ways you described - plus a top group of guys, great spirit, energy, humour and endurance 👍👍👍
I find the most interesting thing was that momma bear not going the other way but coming towards you after firing that shot. Thanks for posting this incredible journey from years back. You'll have these videos to look back on your whole life. Very lucky!
And also her running at us when yelling and making loins loses like they say you’re supposed to do. The bear banger exploded right in her face and worked better than the warning shit from the gun and shouting.
I’ll give this one a big WOW! Well done boys.
Your filming back a 11 yrs ago was pretty advance.
That trip was so tough I’m surprised you got any video done. And we only saw a blink of it.
Brutal & Beautiful, Thank you for sharing your experience. 👍🏼
WOW Jim, this was magical. Definitely the most challenging and the most rewarding trip. You're number 1!
Jim, you've been holding out on us!!! What an epic adventure! I can't believe the fish. 🤩
Unbelievable journey fellas! Thoroughly enjoyed that one.
I know how it feels to have a stick hit you in the eye. Ive broken bones, passed kidney stone, lots of injuries over the years. The eye was by far the worst pain ive ever felt. Props to Ted for making that trip all the way through.
It was pretty nasty looking for sure. Thanks for watching
Oh Mr Baird you have videos the most epic adventures out on the Canadian wilderness and you document it so well and then tell the stories that you encounter so well. My family used to enjoy this type of thing every weekend until television was Introduced to us in the Canadian arctic and it all stopped within a year.
Almost every minute is my favorite but I can pick up any on you guys catching a fish… now the crazy one was the last bit waiting on the wind to easy a little to make it to land and catch the ferry… not an easy task to predict Mother Nature. I really enjoyed your adventures guys.
Wonderful story. A great challenge. Makes one appreciate the skill, strength and knowledge of the First Nation People who lived and/or traveled through similar types of environments.
Holy hell boys looks like the trip of a lifetime.... That gopro footage from teds point of view when they're running those rapids and slide off that boulder are frigging epic
Thanks a lot and ya, that was a scary moment but there was so much water pushing up against the Boulder and washing off of it, and they didn’t completely boas side it so they were fine but it was close!
Amazing trip in every way and great job with the recap format. I really liked the idea of “Wise Jim by the fireplace” retelling a story from 10+ years ago.
Wow! What a trip! This video deserves so much more views! And your channel deserves so much more subscribers! I envy you canadians for this wildernis. Cheers from germany.
Thanks a lot
Great video, awesome how everyone was crushing the fishing and working together through all the hard parts. What a trip.
Thanks!
I cant EVEN imagine a journey like this - you guys are AMAZING!
Thanks!
What a great video, thx for taking us along. Very exciting an enjoyable for sure. Thumbs 👍boys.
I do not have a favorite part. I was glued to every aspect of your adventure. Sharing your whole experience is remarkable. Thank-you.
You’re very welcome, I dint know if there was for me so much either but our feast near the end after going hungry was a pretty amazing thing on the trip itself.
@@JimBairdAdventurer Jim, you are are one of my constant companions on UA-cam. Your bushwhacking and compass skills make me think of our most famous navigator, David Thompson. Read his biography.
Just incredible, an epic watch, no wonder that is your favourite ever trip.
Wow!! Truly epic. It was fun to see you and your brother when you were both young, lean, and coltish. Following your adventures is a real pleasure.
Thanks a lot!
Frickin` Awesome!!! This was a true testament to your willpower and survival skills! Outstanding!
Thanks a lot and thanks for checking it out too.
What an amazing video from the archives of the Baird brothers!! You looked so young and svelte!! lol
Whitewater , brook trout and bugs .. makes for a great adventure !! Thanks for sharing !!!
Epic everything, total gem beauty!! Good to be Home!! Monster!! Ahoy!!!🚩
The lure of the labrador wild! Definitely a very challenging journey!! Epic trip!!
Thanks a lot! Ya, it was awesome
Really thrilled to come across this epic trip. A couple of years ago the boys from Northern Scavenger did a similar trek via the De Pas and George River although I think their last stage to the Labrador coast took a different route. Now I see where they got their inspiration from.
What an epic trip! So fun to watch.
Ted is so frickin young! Never gonna give you up👍🏾
Awesome video! You guys certainly work hard and earn your victories - you are beasts at handling the flys and skeeters. Need to invent something that will kill or repel them. Jim you look so young - thanks for the show and story! Was great.
