Carpenters - Close To You

  • This is one of several promotion videos made for the "Close To You" single. Karen was 20 years old at the time. Richard was 23.
    I can still remember how so many people were amazed with Karen's voice back in 1970, but how even more amazed they were when they saw her playing the drums and singing at the same time.

      Karen Carpenter's voice was God's blessing on this sometimes tragic world. She is gone but the voice will be celebrated forever. She always leaves me with a solitary, lone tear tracing its way down my cheek.

    Wow, she was such an amazing talent! It's incredible how she could sing and control her breathing while also drumming. The difficulty of doing this is probably why you never see any other drummers doing it.

      Agree Karen was incredible but Levon Helm and Willie Wilcox are just two drummer who sang their hearts out. And let's remember Burt Bacharach who wrote this and insisted about that piano ditty midsong. Karen's voice was otherworldly.

    I am with all you that say I almost always cry when I hear Karen sing. I am 73 years old and she still affects me in this way. I am just a few months older than Karen would have been now. She is simply the best of all time. She seems to also have done this sone in one take. She was also so good live, never making any mistakes. She passed 40 years and 2 days ago. RIP Karen, I love you.

      @@John-ob7dh, What is perfect pitch mean?

    • @KNPrince
      @KNPrince 4 роки тому +18

      @@henryedwards4116 Basically it means that a person like Karen has or had an ear that allowed him/her to be in perfect tune with whatever song she was singing.. almost all of the people that had the pleasure to play with the Carpenters either on the road (live) or in the studio have been quoted... that they never heard Karen hit a sour note while singing. She was just that good.
      Karen was also known for being a stickler when it came to everything being "perfect" when the Carpenters were on tour. If a band member wasn't paying attention on stage and they hit a flat or sharp note.. Karen would wait for them back stage after the show... "What is wrong with you?" She'd ask.. "Richard and I count on you to put on the best show possible for our audiences. Those people are paying good money to come see our show! Being able to count on you is the least my brother and I ask!"
      Needless to say... while the pressure to be the best was always there... The Carpenter's have gone down in history as one of the best musical groups of all time.

    • @thegoose0m1
      @thegoose0m1 4 роки тому +8

      Having perfect pitch is more than just the ability to always sing in tune. It means being able to recognize the "pitch" of a note just from it's sound. For instance; person A plays a single note on the piano, person B, with his/her back turned or eyes closed says that's an A 440. Person B plays another note, person B, "that's a C two steps above". They can also hear a chord and identity it...."that's a A flat minor with a diminished 5th" and so on. Most good musicians have good "relative pitch"; if they hear a note that can sing or hum a 3rd or 5th above, but perfect pitch is relatively rare. I was unaware that Karen had perfect pitch but I'm certainly not surprised....

    • @KNPrince

      Actually Karen recorded the lead vocal three times.. The first two she over emphasized some words and entire sentences.. It was the third time she sang the lead vocal that was used and released for public consumption..

    She just wanted to be loved. She never found the right man, that would give her what she really needed. She didn't need fame, she needed real love.

    love Karen....Fantastic production and arrangement from Richard......beautiful song from Bacharach~David, and great intuition from Herb Alpert to choose it for Karen to sing. The negatives from people are putting down all of these artists, not just the Carpenters. Herb Alpert, Bacharach and The Carpenters are all some of the biggest contributors to popular music in the 60's to the 70's. It doesn't get much better than this really.

    Such a beautiful girl and she had the most beautiful voice ever. Such a unique talent. To be able to sing so heartfelt and come out of her shyness. She just shined inwardly and outwardly. Her brother being such a genius when it came to her, and his own talent it’s just a beautiful story altogether. So glad that he still works toward getting their music to be heard. ❤️

RIP Karen.Richard: Your talent in the musical arrangements and piano playing was true work of art as you did these things effortlessly in time. 7th grader when this song came out. I had a spiritual reaction to this song. The chorus at the end of this song was a thrill. I liked her behind the drums. I felt I was watching a complete artist. Curiously she didn't talk like her singing voice. She sang like an Angel.

    During the closing vamp, at 3:29, the band shorts one of the measures. This is driven by the drums. Karen puts down the first beat of the next measure one thump early. It's like the heart skipping a beat. Brilliant.

I became a pianist and piano teacher, and I credit this song as my greatest inspiration. I have always wanted to sing like Karen....but no one can, nor will anyone ever have a voice like this. Thank you Karen, for sharing your incomparable talent with the world. You were perfect, even if you could not see it, but the world saw it, and still does.
