YES, I ALWAYS LIKED THE CARPENTER. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW? WHAT ID HAPPENING WITH KARENS LITTLE GIRL? WELL? I MEAN, OF THAT YOUNG LADY. = MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU, FROM MY HEART. + 🎄 🎉 + 🍾
This song always makes me shed a tear. My Dad loved my Mom so much in the 32 years of their marriage, before his passing from Cancer in 1982, that he would sing this to my Mom every time it came on the radio. No love have I ever seen since, has been as strong as their love for each other. RIP Dad and Mom. I love and miss you both very much, and thank you for showing our family what TRUE LOVE means!
I had it I was young and dumb hurt him now he's gone and I never got to take those words back after 30 years it is a physical pain so if you love someone tell them daily always speak truth and kindness and hañg on as.tight as you can love true love is once in a lifetime. I'm sorry Jim RIP.
Absolutely Awesome story. Just lost my mother last October. Never in my life have I seen a man love a woman like my dad love my mom . He is my hero there for her to the very end..
Karen Carpenter. I am 61 years old and listen to your wonderful voice. She was a fantasitic singer. Wish she lived to old age. Unfortunately she died far too young. Rest in peace .
This is were Karen was at her most happiest, behind the drums. Hated the spotlight in front, but with her voice she didn`t have a choice.. Just beautiful, gone but never forgotten, Rest in peace Karen
***** You may be right, beautiful voice. I will always believe that her brother pushed her to perform when she was too sick. We lost her way too early.
I have always thought The Carpenters wrote the best love songs I’ve ever heard....the pure beauty of her voice sometimes moves me to tears,it’s such a terrible loss she’s no longer here.
The simplicity of this song combined with the soothing background vocals and Karen's impeccable voice make this a personal favorite. Almost makes me cry every time. All the feels.
The Carpenters were unique onto themselves. They had thought-provoking lyrics, beautiful musical accompaniment and a voice that "will" endure for the ages. She sang about Hope's, dreams, sadness and love and they felt like a soundtrack to my life in the 70's and beyond. So when I married in 1993, the very first song at our reception was " We've only just begun". My wife and I smiled as it played and unfortunately, I lost my wife to cancer only 10 years later. Yet I still hold incredible happy memories of that day in 1993 and the musical part The Carpenters played in it. As I approach 60 years old, I'm proud to be a " lifelong" fan of this wonderful brother and sister team. Thank you, Karen and Richard. With respect and love.....💗💗
One of my favorite memories of hearing Close To You is sitting at the dinner table in the 80s - the song came on the radio and my Dad would 'play' the drums using dinner knives, my brother would 'play' the trumpet and my mom, two sisters and I would sing. How I love that memory now . . .
Not only did she have a voice from heaven...her talent playing the drums was second to none .She was one of the best !!...!Even Buddy Rich said wow! One of the top 25 drummers in the WORLD!
absolutely agree karen is it! the ultimate female crooner who sang to you not at you! compare her singing this song to streisand's "butchering" of it with her over the top ego "runs" and dramatics! obviously getting off on her own voice and not even paying attention to the emotion of the words of this song and the story of it!....
that VOICE!!!!! otherworldly hauntingly beautiful! and to think she was only 20 years old when she sang this!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS INSANE IN A INCREDIBLE UNBELIEVABLE GOOD WAY!.. also the harmonies and background vocals she and her brother sang together are so so beautiful as well..

Could i please order a time machine to take me back to 1970 just for the day.Life seemed so much less hectic and i'll even pay for the petrol. Happy memories from a lifetime ago.Simply beautiful
Yes sir! glad there's others out there who feel as I do. Don't know about the metric stuff, but if the truth be known, as much as we're supposed to love and embrace technology and advancement, there is a large (majority?) that wishes for the simpler and SLOWER times. Guess you have to live long enough to understand that.
I am so thankful that I saw Karen in concert back in '73. To my mind her voice and songs are sacred, they touch me so deeply. I was also thrilled to meet and talk with Roger Nichols who wrote several of Karen's hits including "Rainy Days..." and "I Won't Last A Day...". He shared several stories about Karen and Richard with me. I love Karen and always will.
The first time I heard this, when they did the 'ahh' at the end. all the hairs on my arms rose straight up,, it still makes my heart skip a beat.. Pure auditory heaven..
This song brings me back to the summer of 1972 in Houston Texas... Great precious memories as a child... Thank's Karen... You're voice and talents will never be matched....
Herb Alpert - who guided Richard and Karen in their early music ventures - said that 'he couldn't believe the quality of her voice, it had such perfect pitch'. I remember being in our kitchen, listening to this song with my father (a man hard to impress!) and him telling me "this girl is going to be really famous". So true!
I was 18 years old and falling in love for the first time when this song came out in the summer of 1970. Those were the days when fans would call into radio stations to request their favorite tunes, and the number for this one was overwhelming--so much so that my AN station played it at least once every hour. Ahhh, hanging out at Lauderdale-By-The Sea and thinking of Gail Wotke. (Sigh).....
At the age of 17, back in the early 70s, I fell in love with Karen's voice and her songs. This song in particular, always made me long to find that special girl and want to fall madly and deeply in love with her. Then in 1975, I did just that, I met the girl of my dreams and this song meant all the more to me! I married that beautiful girl the next year and we are still together today and more in love than ever before. You might have guessed that I'm a hopeless romantic, and I unashamedly admit it! To anyone out there that is longing to be close to someone as well, I say be patient and it will happen and it will be great as long as there is true love and mutual respect each other! My best to you and Happy Trails! ;-)
MountainCruzer Good for you & God Bless. Nothing wrong with being a hopeless romantic. Infrequent are the stories of long term successful relationships, so it's uplifting to hear. I, however, am hopeless and a romantic. Life has kinda passed me by (I'm on cycle 4 now, for those of you old enough to remember the dog food commercial), and have always been too insecure to attempt a relationship. I do like hearing about those who are so blessed.
I have listen to many different bands and musicians ranging from many different decades, but I must say that none of them compare to the Carpenters and the unbelievable and angelic voice of Karen Carpenter and the talented Richard Carpenter. I can say that their music will always be special to me, and even though I was not around when they were around or even when Karen died, I can say that their music will forever live on as long as people know that they exist and can recognize Karen's voice. R.I.P. Karen, you will forever be missed by every Carpenters fan from before, now, and in the future.
Truly, Karen had such a profound voice, speaking welling emotions from the heart. Time and time again, I've experienced comfort from listening to Karen sing. Music is often entertaining, even thrilling, but her singing goes deeper, stirring the soul with a healing touch. I tend to believe that Karen's voice gives us a reminder, somehow, that there is Someone who understands the difficulties we face and grants Hope. It's no wonder so many people cry when they hear her sing.
Karen is so pretty here. She looks angelic. If I was her mother, I would cry watching her. I would be so proud of her. I went to visit her tomb last October with my kids. They know Mommy loves their music. God bless her.
Shannon Sequeira It's so sad that you mentioned about Karen's Mother because from all the articles and documentaries and bio's that I've seen and read it would seem that Karen did not have a very good relationship with her Mother, Agnes Carpenter. It was very sad because in spite of Karen's incredible, angelic, MUSICAL voice (both singing AND speaking), it had seemed like Agnes favoured Richard, the older brother, over Karen. He was always the "Golden Boy" in the eyes of the Mother. I don't think that Agnes really knew the kind of rare vocal gift that Karen had. She loved Karen, of course, but it seemed like the love she had for Karen wasn't 'genuine' enough. I mean, she was known to be pretty controlling over Karen and her life.
@@shauntrailskinner9645 You really took the time to write that just to be confrontational? Wow, how sad. You have serious problems. I suggest you spend your time and energy solving your own problems which you clearly have versus trying to create problems with others. You're what the Bible calls a busybody. There are two kinds of people in this world, people who try to create peace and people who try to create strife. Which one do you think you are? God loves The Peacemaker not the argument creator, which one do you think you are. It's clear to the whole world which one you are. Let's see if you can figure it out.
She gave such beauty to the world with her voice and talent. It will continue for generations to come. It makes me sick to know that she was so harshley criticized which ultimately brought on her death. I know your in a better place but losing you was terrible. RIP Karen
I thank my Mom for introducing me to Karen's angelic voice at a very young age. Today, I appreciate her more than ever. What a beautiful mark she left on the world. You're a true inspiration.
JUST A THOUGHT?? KAREN WILL BE SRYDYED OF SINGING, AS LAUREL AND HARDY WERE / ARE BEING STUDYED OF THER WAY AHED COMEDY ROUTINES?? I DIDTHINK THROUGH THE DECADES/ AND ALL I COULD FIND WAS, - ANN MURAY - & - GLORIA ESTEPHAN'S - VOICE AND TALLENT? THAT CAME CLOSE TO KAREN'S MUSICAL ABILITYS?!! END OF STORY!!
Absolutely love the Carpenters! So talented! Karen was amazing! She could sing and play the drums! I miss her presence in the world! Listening to their music helped me heal after my divorce! Much love and respect!🤗🙏💜
This is my favorite..... among many......". Close to You"..... She definitely, left her mark in this world!! And listen to those instruments... love it!!
On July 4th, 1974, Kasey Kasem counted down the "Top 40 acts of the '70's so far". I listened to that countdown hoping my favorite group would be in the top five. When he finally got to the number one act, imagine my sheer delight when the first notes of "Close To You" came over the airwaves. I couldn't believe it! The Carpenters had topped the Jackson Five, Three Dog Night, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, and Elton John! The smile on my face stayed there for days. They simply were the best thing on the radio at the time, at least to my 16 (almost 17) year old ears, and Karen's voice still delights me every time I play their music. Timeless songs and a voice for the ages. 'Nuff said...
Dammit!!! Why do I cry every time I hear her sing this song. I don’t understand?!! Her voice pulls at my heart like it’s breaking and I’m a grown-ass 55-year-old man. I fell in love with Karen’s voice instantly when I first heard her sing this song on the radio in 1973. Fast forward to 2019 and I’m still mesmerized by her pure angelic voice. I shall never hear another female with a flawless singing ability that captivates the soul like Karen’s ever again.
This is about as perfect as a song and video could ever be, Richard and Karen's musical talents and synergy come together to create a masterpiece among the best that will ever be made.
I love the classic rock from the 60s & 70s but I'm gonna admit I absolutely love The Carpenters. No group defined Top 40 radio in the 70s like they did. None like them then or now.
NOW AND FOREVER MY FAVORITE SINGER! the greatest female singer of love and romance songs ever! no one has and will ever sing more TO the listener, NOT AT the listener. no one touches her PERFECT diction for every syllable for every word she ever sang. no one emotes, phrases and told the story of the song like her!...will miss her forever....
A female drummer + lead vocalist in the 1970s = Unheard of. Thank you Karen Carpenter. As an unashamedly proud Mum, I dedicate this to my Only Offspring: You've had "girlfriends" since you were in Grade 1! I will always treasure being close to you.
My favorite vocalist, by far, is Karen Carpenter ❤ I love her, I love her so much! I absolutely love that song! It sends shivers down my spine and makes me feel very nostalgic. Karen Carpenter had the voice of an angel, she was a great performer.. It's crazy, that song touches a part of me, a sensual caress that makes me shiver. Rest in peace Karen, you are missed so much!!!
Anthony Marabito To me, Karen had the most beautiful perfect voice I've ever heard. Her talent was amazing. Have you heard another voice like that? Didn’t think so.
You know, I don't think I've heard anyone describe her voice as accurately as you have. Effortlessly is the perfect word. Everybody says Angelic or this that and the other but you are now since of her voice is the best I've heard. Effortlessly. Good job
I was eleven and had spent an exhausting day with my aunts shopping for a black dress to wear to my father's funeral. My two little cousins, blue-eyed blonds of four and six crawled in bed with me and serenaded me with this song, "to cheer you up." This song will always be special to me!
Karen looks so sweet and innocent. A very beautiful looking woman, Perfect in every way and a voice to match........well no-one . RIP Angel, love you always
My son just got married on January 3rd. this song was being played on the radio when I was in the hospital in the operating room before I had my cesarean. I told my doctor good song and my doctor said a great kid is going to be born today. she was right. this was our mother son song at his wedding.
Karen Carpenter was one of the most talented females ever. She is a great role model for girls and guys; can you do that? Her illness should not be any factor in judging her talent, her accomplishments, and how wonderful of a girl she is. Let me add, she was a musical force the world has not seen; "a 5'4" tornado with a pair of drumsticks in her hand."
Wether or not Karen deserves to be a role model to anyone is up to each of us's personal subjective choice. What is unfair about your post is that you seem to imply Karen made a choice to starve herself out of some vain selfish reason. The fact of the matter is Karen had no choice because the ilness that plagued her - Anorexia Nervosa - is a MENTAL disease. You don't choose to be insane/schizophrenic/paranoid/bi-polar/plain crazy etc. you just are and there is nothing the aflicted individual can do about it. Karen had no more choice on the matter than any idividual suffering from mental diseases does. And it was certainly not her fault she was mentally ill. She did not make a conscious, logical, personal choice to stop feeding herself properly! Her ilness made that choice for her.
Shadowboro2 Dang how could you have possibly conjured up hate from anything he said? Just enjoy the music. People like you need to seriously relax. Just click the video, and try your hardest not to scroll down man.
50 years later and still the gold standard. The brother was great also.
Karen Carpenter had probably the clearest and most flawless singing voice I've ever heard.
No probably about it she actually did.
The vocal register God gave her was unique as was her ability to shine within it. She had a deep quality to her singing range that was somewhere between a typical male and female singing voice. So she sometimes sounds like a male and then in the next moment a female singing voice. She could hit some high notes but not the highest.
The word you're looking for is angelic.
Scott Tracy I read somewhere, that she could sing also very high, but she wanted to sound effortless and kept it lower.
The voice of an angel. It consumes you...
No drummer EVER will sing like this. She was 1 in a trillion. A true unique gem. I love you Karen

Karen Carpenter. I am 61 years old and listen to your wonderful voice. She was a fantasitic singer. Wish she lived to old age. Unfortunately she died far too young. Rest in peace .
The most beautiful and effortless voices of all time. No fancy over the top, over powering, drown out vocals. Pure and simple.
she was the ULTIMATE VOCALIST not just a great singer, and of course master storyteller..
Yes had a Beautiful Voice, Loved them
50 Years have passed since this song, and still no one has touched her.
Nope, not a one!
Its not a competition😀
and never will
Have you ever listened to a singer called Rumer she too has a beautiful voice similar to Karen Carpenter
People ask me why I have such a mellow personality. I reply the music I grew up with. I then play them this song..
Still amazing after all these years. Karen Carpenter was an amazing performer. Beautiful, crystal clear voice.
And she was an outstanding drummer. ❤
This is were Karen was at her most happiest, behind the drums. Hated the spotlight in front, but with her voice she didn`t have a choice.. Just beautiful, gone but never forgotten, Rest in peace Karen
Yes and this performance shows what a nice job she did on the drums while all of the beauty of her voice was running concurrently.
I agree with you. She had extraordinary talents and that voice was a Angel.
watch her playing and singing on the Carson Show doing Mr. Guder...pure ecstacy.
English learners must listen to her beautiful pronunciation !
I think Karen Carpenter’s voice was the most beautiful voice of all time. There will never be another like her.

Joseph Przygocki To me, in my opinion. On February 4, 1983, the world lost the most beautiful voice ever ♥
When I first heard her sing in the 2nd grade I asked my Mom listen Mom there's an angel singing on the radio!!
I'm not even religious but that story brought me to tears. Karen was Angelic.

Love this song since I first heard it I was in kindergarten 1972💗
They didn't write any of their songs.
@lou Redmon. Richard wrote or co wrote several of their songs. Not this one, but many of them.
This was written by Burt Bacharach.... one of his many classics
The simplicity of this song combined with the soothing background vocals and Karen's impeccable voice make this a personal favorite. Almost makes me cry every time. All the feels.

This isn't listening to an incredible voice.... this is way beyond that .... this is experiencing soul
That was the best way I've heard her voice described. Thank you
The most timeless voice ever. Even though she is gone. Her voice speaks eternally.
50, 60 years from now people will still know of Karen Carpenter.
Gone too soon. Beautiful voice. Smooth as butter, sweet as honey!
The star that shines twice as bright shines half as long.

Those were the days when fans would call into radio stations to request their favorite tunes, and the number for this one was overwhelming--so much so that my AN station played it at least once every hour. Ahhh, hanging out at Lauderdale-By-The Sea and thinking of Gail Wotke. (Sigh).....
+Zeppolino100 Gail Wotke?? I married her!
Ha Ha!
I remember sitting on hold with radio stations to requesting songs. I bet there's an app for that now. Haha
My best to you and Happy Trails! ;-)
Bill W ?
Ty for your story, beautiful, i have fond memories of the Carpenters back in grade school, music is not the same anymore....
Nice post :-)
MountainCruzer Good for you & God Bless. Nothing wrong with being a hopeless romantic. Infrequent are the stories of long term successful relationships, so it's uplifting to hear. I, however, am hopeless and a romantic. Life has kinda passed me by (I'm on cycle 4 now, for those of you old enough to remember the dog food commercial), and have always been too insecure to attempt a relationship. I do like hearing about those who are so blessed.
Just read this in 2017 ❤️ damn that was the best story ❤️ bless you and your wife
Such vocal control. I never tire of listening to this song sung by the Carpenters. It always sounds fresh.
Karen, you were awesome!!! You made my high school yrs wonderful!
Wow, that's really cool that you did that with your girls.
Linda demais!!!
she looked an angelic boy/man.
This song always sounds great even now in 2023 😤
Compared to the music today
ALSO IN 2024 DEC. CHRISTMAS 🎹 + ☮ & ❤ + ✝
On the day that you were born the angels got together and decided to create a dream come true. Karen, that part of your beautiful song is about you
Generations of people to come will still be listening to the carpenters there music is so timeless beautiful RIP Karen
There have been other women who are great, but Karen Carpenter sings so effortlessly it is amazing. Not to mention her range...
her voice is like silk
'Nuff said...
wow
ファッションやメイクも全部かわいい。カレン前髪短いのかわいい。やっぱりドラムしながら歌う姿だいすき。
Her voice was a gift from god
Yes her voice is one of a kind !! No such thing as any gifts from god !! there is no god !!
You're not alone. You'd have to be heartless not to react to an angel on earth we were blessed with.
I was in village outside Mexico City was always run down to translate her songs people who didn't understand the words fell in love with her voice
SHE IS ART
such a sweet and pure voice like honey. its too bad the world cant hear that voice live anymore
this woman is beautiful
the world misses you r.i.p. miss carpenter
We sure do Everyday actually
Not heard this in 30+ years and wow what a voice, forgot, sorry Karen. Breaks yer heart.
Beautiful production too. Simple days...
This is about as perfect as a song and video could ever be, Richard and Karen's musical talents and synergy come together to create a masterpiece among the best that will ever be made.
Perfection! Untouched by any female singer ❤️
She was an angel, never heard anything like her since
It's A Sad Song Simply For The Person That Sang It. Karen Carpenter Was So BEAUTIFUL DAMN IT WHY SHE DIDN'T SEE IT HERSELF😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
An Angel's voice. Heavenly Thank you God for Karen Carpenter. What a voice.
Probably one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, classic
My favorite vocalist, by far, is Karen Carpenter ❤
I love her, I love her so much!
***** No, I'm not a lesbian! I'm just a girl who loves Karen Carpenter for ages! Why this question? Why do you ask me about that?
I'm obsessed wirh Karen. She was so effortlessly talented. This song means so much to me for sentimental reasons.
Anthony Marabito This song means so much to me too!
Anthony Marabito To me, Karen had the most beautiful perfect voice I've ever heard. Her talent was amazing. Have you heard another voice like that? Didn’t think so.
***** To me, I mean...they were both so perfect together.
This music was on a magical scale, transporting people to a whole other plane.
This song eventually became my 2-yr old son's lullaby...he always requested us to play this when going to sleep...he even made his own title "bird"...
Her voice was so crisp, and she sang so effortless
and all without any auto tuning or correction.
Lefty Hara as my mom used to tell me her voice was 100% natural
Vickie Lauderdale I doubt that's how it was I've practiced for years
You know, I don't think I've heard anyone describe her voice as accurately as you have. Effortlessly is the perfect word. Everybody says Angelic or this that and the other but you are now since of her voice is the best I've heard. Effortlessly. Good job
Great way to start the New Year!
What a talent. We miss you, Karen.
So much talent in one person....she was truly God-gifted!!
The golden voice of Karen Carpenter will live forever in the hearts of all who love her!
How could I have forgotten what a beautiful voice she had! Golden indeed.
So beautiful.
Love this song, and the angel voice of Karen! Gone to soon.🙏⚘️❤️
I was eleven and had spent an exhausting day with my aunts shopping for a black dress to wear to my father's funeral. My two little cousins, blue-eyed blonds of four and six crawled in bed with me and serenaded me with this song, "to cheer you up." This song will always be special to me!
The Angels got together and decided to give her that voice!
Behaviors are not diseases
Shadowboro2 Dang how could you have possibly conjured up hate from anything he said? Just enjoy the music. People like you need to seriously relax. Just click the video, and try your hardest not to scroll down man.
It's almost the end of 2020. Who's here to still witness Karen's angelic voice?
