    I felt like Mercer and Grayson were huge hypocrites in this episode. Last week they were willing to break rules and start a war for Topa's happiness but this week they were all by the book rules are rules and willingly erased a family from existence when it appeared nothing bad happened with Malloy living in the 21st and living a happy life with the family he made because the Orville never came to rescue him.

    Here's my prediction: Later on in the Season we're going to see something happen similar to in Season 2 where the timeline changes because Gordon didn't stay in the 21st century. The crew will discover that 2025 Gordon was right in that him having 2 kids in the past lead to his family line creating the Planetary Union, so they find a way to send him back in time again to return to Laura. And at the end of this episode, the sandwich that Gordon sent forward 3 months will arrive in front of the rest of the crew and they'll have a good laugh about it.

    What's so awesome about this episode is I can't remember another series that questioned the value of an "alternate" timeline in such a meaningful way. In other time travel stories, it often feels like a victory has been won once the prime timeline has been restored. This episode gives a poignant view into the other side of that equation.

    That sandwich has got to reappear in three months. I need this to happen in an episode. :D I keep wondering if we're going to see Laura and the son and baby / baby-to-be again, and possibly the version of Gordon that stays with them. How are they key to that timeline? Does Gordon's son or the baby do something as adults? Does a later descendant do something vital? If they don't exist in the new timeline, then what else happens instead? Are BOTH timelines needed? Which one is "right" for the original version of the Orville? Or is each version, and each resulting Orville, necessary for their timelines? Oh, temporal paradoxes / theory can give you a headache. -- I need something besides coffee in that nebula to resolve it! :D I love the Orville. This is good stufff. -- And the kid, with his subtle accent, did a good job. Just think, he might be a future star. Meanwhile, I hope we'll get to see him again. Might get to see Laura again? So great how the Orville points out the puzzling parts of all this and then is willing to explore things.

    Is anyone going to talk about the obvious temporal paradox that was created and left unresolved?
    In the message that Gordon sends from the past he clearly states he has been in 2015 for 6 months, yet when the crew jump back in time for the second time to find him before he finds Laura, Lamar states they arrived 1 month after Gordon did... roughly 5 months before Gordon could send his original message containing his temporal coordinates.
    How did the Orville receive a message that Gordon could not have sent?
    This is either a pretty big plot hole or the makings of something else that will pay off in a later episode.

      @@BrianLarney But the message is how the crew knew when and where Gordon was... so by picking him up 5 months before he was supposed to send the message, they created a paradox since without that message there would be no way they would know which time and place to go and find him. They erased the events in Gordon's life that happened during those 5 months leading up to him sending the distress call, including the event of sending the distress call. So if they rescued Gordon before he was supposed to send the distress call (meaning there is no way Gordon could have sent it) then who sent it?

    I really enjoyed this episode, but what bothered me was the whole "we can't impact the timeline" idea. When they found out that Gordon was in the past, they had his obiturary up, which included text about his "wife and son"...so his living in the past was part of their timeline, as was his having a family. They altered the timeline by removing him from the past. Gordon asks Ed after saying that humans are social creatures, "Was I supposed to die?" and Ed responds, "To protect the timeline, Yes", then a few minutes later he says, "without knowing [the impact of time travel], we can't interfere", but again, the timeline as they know it already has Gordon living and dieing in the past, so that shouldn't be a concern.

    • @malcolmmorin

    This reminds me of what the character jay garrick in the flash said to barry, you change time you fracture it, try to put it together and it will not be the same, with every change to the timeline and then restoring it to normal will always bring some form of consequences, like for instance in season 1 the orville was meant to be destroyed in the gravity field or something but was saved by the woman from the future, since she said nothing about the kaylon threat it probably never happened, but for the orville to now live, it probably created the threat of the kaylon, not sure cause any change will cause a fracture to it even if its restored, its not the complete same there will , in season 2 with kelly she changed the timeline when she went back to her time, kaylon threat still happened cause the orville and its original crew didnt get destroyed in that gravity field, had it did maybe the kaylon threat would not happen in that timeline, but they needed to restore the original timeline she changed cause of her decision and the memory wipe not working properly, even with it restored, we have yet to see what consequences come from it being restored, but now with gordans change of the past cause of being involved with it, there is no telling what slight change the future might have even if restored, time can never truly be completely restored to what it was, there will always be some small minimal change, but with gordan being so far in the past, there might be something they have not seen yet that with how long that timeline had existed, that it might have made something either good or bad happen.

    One thing does bother me: Gordon, anyone arriving in the past, could not ever entirely avoid interacting and thereby altering the past in some way. Just to exist, you'd have to eat and drink, live somewhere, unavoidable contact even if you are minimizing it. The alternative to remove oneself (disintegration or other) also is unacceptable. If prevented or rescued within the timeline, then there's also interaction. So there's no real way to win the scenario once it happens. -- Given that, making it a crime to interact with people and events in a time travel paradox is not necessary justifiable. I mean, for some things, sure, it should be a crime For others, probably unavoidable and so not a crime. Or else events don't merit it being a crime. -- I don't know exactly, but if you think it through, there's no way, practically, that just arriving and being there, or doing the minimal amount, avoids some interaction and so alters things some or a lot. But the whole issue of time travel has possibilities worth considering for the implications of what can be possible and how to deal with things. Both the moral/ethical human issues and the practical problems of new items introduced.

      if you assume a deterministic universe (fated) then any time travelling Shenanigans are also built into it making the idea of paradox's moot... though it also means existence as we know it is running on rails where every choice is predetermined and free will is nothing but an illusion.

    • @laneswerve
      @laneswerve 2 роки тому +1

      @@johntowers1213 predetermination doesn't appear to be what the writers are going for in the Orville universe, though (as evidenced through the whole Kelly debacle).
      @Ben W I believe the laws are there to limit the damage - but acknowledge that their existence in the past is potentially harmful. Hence, the rule that says they need to live outside of society and to minimize contact as much as possible. The crime part comes in when a union officer knowingly and flagrantly disobeys that law, citing Gordon's case as an extreme example. A minimal infraction would have been to just live amongst the people of that timeline, where anything you tell someone could cause a butterfly effect that could have disastrous results further down the timeline. The chance of that happening is much more slim than having two children who should have never existed. Every breath they take is as dangerous as the time traveler themselves to the stability of the known future.
      The part that I personally don't understand is Ed's reasoning for not allowing Gordon to take his family into the future with him. At least in the future, their effect on it is moot since it is not a predetermined universe they live in. Would their own futures beyond that day change due to the kid's existence on the Orville? Sure. But that wouldn't be an issue because no one knows exactly how.

    • @kneekoo
      @kneekoo 2 роки тому +1

      @@laneswerve It's complicated. Taking his whole family also means taking Laura, who would've had a certain life, interacted with many others, singing, inspiring someone to become a musician, etc. Taking only the kids would leave Laura heartbroken because she would've just lost all her family. If time travel was real any interaction with the past would divert the timeline into a new path. Thus, it should be that the Orville drops back in time to "10 years later" Gordon, then goes back to 'a month later' Gordon, but this leaves the Orville in a subtly-different timeline from the one it had been on (and '10 year later' Gordon living happily ever after). Then when the Orville STLs their way back to the 24th century they find that they are in a timeline in which the details of history are subtly different from the one they have been in, no one they knew from their previous lives actually exists in this new timeline, but everything is mostly familiar....and the 'nearly-the-same-Union' has not yet been attacked by the Kaylon.... (Eventually, after several adventures, the super-duper-advanced folks from that world with the weird time speeding-up sends the Orville back to its original timeline - and deal with the Kaylon.)

    • @scottlyttle5586

      Of course, if they were in the same timeline, and depending on how long the Kaylons were around, The Orville could have gone to Kaylon 1 and perhaps done something to prevent the existing war.. although..that would have potentially caused Isaac to never join the team.. Fox, who originally picked the show up for production on their network, has a history of cancelling TV shows prematurely. It happened to Firefly, Lie to Me, Lucifer and a whole host of other TV shows that deserved to continue. The Orville was not immune to this. Fox cancelled it, and when Seth put out feelers looking for another network to pick the show up, Hulu offered a deal and Seth took it. If it weren't for Hulu we wouldn't even have this season, or we would have had to wait longer for it to release as Seth would have been in more talks with other networks to hash out a deal.
      Besides, although I'm not a fan of the current landscape of fragmented streaming services I'm far less a fan of old cable channel bundling that leaves the customer paying for 60+ channels in a basic package, for which only 3ish are of any interest to them and they still need to be on the couch at a specific time, on a specific day/night to catch their favourite show and STILL have to watch commercials. The fragmentation of streaming services might suck, but it's still a much better experience than what old cable is offering.

    This is my favorite Orville episode but I really disliked the ending. Gordon had already been in love with Laura before he even went back in time. To be told that he'd built a life with her and had children, and all that was just wiped away...he just brushed that off much too cavalierly I thought. I'm not saying he should have hated Ed and Kelly for it but Ed was more upset about it than he was and that didn't seem right.

    This season is just not doing it for me. It's well-written and well-acted. But I liked The Orville because it was fun and funny. This season, every episode has been a downer, this one in particular. I mean, they could have at least thrown us a bone and said that two timelines were created and Gordon also got to stay with his family while another Gordon was rescued. So far, the only episode that didn't end on a down note was the one where the crew were put in mortal danger so the immortal people could see what fear of death was like.

    I don't like this episode. Everyone was willing to bend the rules for Topa but not for Gordon. He's basically just Doc Brown from Back to the Future 3. But instead they treated him like Tuvix from Voyager who didn't want to die to become Nelix and Tuvak. The episode could have had a better "feel good" way of resolution. Instead, Ed was all temporal prime directive or what ever and was jarring because he wasn't like that with the Topa episode.

    • @foxmyx62

      In the Topa episode, there was no jeopardy that the entire timeline/universe could be destroyed...just relations with Moclus, bad enough but not catastrophic. However, toying with timeline could destroy everything and everyone. No Union, no Orville, no history, no future, no nothing, maybe. Much greater and unknown repercussions.

    • @ixiahj
      @ixiahj 2 роки тому +1

      @@foxmyx62 I distinctly remember the admiral stating millions of people could die if relations with the mocklans deteriorated because of the threats from krills and kaylons.
      There's no threat of any kind of paradox in episode 6. Remember in Start Trek V when Scotty asked "How do we know he didn't invent transparent aluminum?" How was Ed so sure that Gordon wasn't meant to live his life in the past? He never went there willingly.
      My point is it could've been delivered in a much better way. They should've focused on stating that alternate time lines can run parallel to each other. This means that even if they fetch Gordon 10 years in the past, it doesn't mean his family with Laura gets erased. It just means another version of Gordon goes back to the Orville. But instead, they ended the episode drinking sadly saying two of Laura's kids would never be born. That isn't at all true because they went back farther into the past to fetch Gordon even before Gordon could send them a message. So alternate parallel timelines do work. They should've focused on that.

      @@foxmyx62 I'd argue the risk for Topa was WAY worse. If the Moclans had left the Union it would have potentially meant the end of all organic life in the galaxy, considering the Krill alliance has recently burst. Also.. there wasn't an immediate time pressure for Topa. There was the option to wait for a diplomatic change, there was the option for finding a civilian doctor and perform the procedure in secret. There were so many options but they chose the one putting the entire galaxy at risk and disobeying an order coming directly from the Union Council.
      Here they destroyed a man's family, threatened him in front of his family, his children, scared his pregnant wife... and for what? For making all that pointless a couple minutes later and without even searching for a different option or even figuring out how big his impact was on anything. And Gordon is supposedly his best friend. So far in the show I honestly haven't figured out yet why they're even friends. Gordon does everything for Ed and Ed constantly treats Gordon like crap. He didn't even try to understand him when he fell in love with Lara in the simulator and here he certainly didn't even try to understand his friend or find a solution for him. Ed is a crappy friend.

    I hate the time travel depicted in this show. If you travel thru time, assuming you’re not entering another universe, it means you were meant to go back. But they always treat it like the timeline is one line that can be altered.
    Like that season 2 finale where the future was changed. That should’ve been a new BRANCHED timeline. The original would always exist. Bad Future Grace wouldn’t just vanish like she did, she’d have to live in the past of that timeline forever. The Bad Future timeline would also still exist.
    This episode specifically p!ssed me off. Gordon was sent back in time along their specific timeline. Evidenced by the fact his message made it to them across space. He even had a record of being a pilot that they pull up. It was obvious that his effect on the timeline wasn’t significant. Even by their own “rules” of time travel. In fact it almost seems like it was meant to happen.
    They should’ve taken Gordon and his family to the future. He deserves that much. He belongs on the Orville but he also belongs with them.

    There's no such thing as a timetravel paradox or a grandfather paradox. I know this is all make believe, anyway, but if they are gonna go there, at least make a halfassed attempt to either be consistent or be realistic.
    Beyond the timetravel stuff, the Orville is obsessed with the 21st century, but when Ed & Co are finally in it - in the car driving to Gordon - they're dunking on the time, like Ed isn't the 21st century's version of a steampunk kid or one of those girls that dress up in 1950s clothes everyday & obsesses with old timey sh×t.

    I don't dislike the Charly character, but as I feared she is taking up screen and story time from Claire and Bortis. And they are dragging out her story arc with Isaac way too long - it's simply not interesting enough to be eating up this many episodes. Was that "payoff" supposed to be she had romantic feelings for her friend who died? Really? That's it? This is sub-standared storytelling by Orville standards.

      I feel like the point of her character is to boil down the feelings of many people in to a fine point. As long as she has a problem with Isaac you know plenty of other people do to for similar reasons.Being that the Kaylon war is a large part of this season/arc it's likely that her feelings will be part of whatever redemption Isaac achieves.
