Around half season I would have laught in the face of someone telling me "You will cry for Charley".
I was sympatethic to her horrible loss cause it's was clear her hate come from her survivor syndrome, but from that to being moved for her death it's a long step.
A long step covered by a great character arc.
Heroes and made not born, because to be an hero you first have to overcome your own limitations and do something that would have been impossibile for your previous self.
I love the orville and the way it takes on reality in a fantasy setting because very often it's not a boring "that's right / that's wrong" but "what would you do in his/her shoes".
It moves you and makes you think, and sometime it's also divisive and that is a good thing because it you can talk about it and gain perspective widening your mind.
And that image with the explosion reflected in her eyes it's gold: it's her soul finding closure

I remember how the end of STP fell completely flat and Picard's "sacrifice" had zero emotional depth. This episode of _The Orville_ however took a brandnew character and made you feel how much her sacrifice matters.
Now that's writing and that's acting

I love how they went to the opposite end of that old trope of coming up with a weapon to turn the tide and win the war. A solution that somehow can defeat the great enemy in one go that has resolved many Sci-Fi stories some of which I love. But here it starts out with the Union creating said weapon, struggle with the implications of using such a weapon to potentially commit Genocide but rather reaching a compromise with the enemy. Then having to fight at all costs to stop the usage of that weapon that has fallen into the wrong hands. Just great storytelling!!

@@drbuckley1 Nothing would have changed. To end the war would have required the agreement of the Japanese military leadership to do so and that would only happen if Emperor Hirohito himself told them to end the war, something that he didn’t do until after Nagasaki, when it became apparent that the Americans had made multiple nuclear bombs and not just the one that was dropped on Hiroshima. The civilian government and the peace negotiators didn’t have any power or influence over the generals and the admirals. Only the Emperor had that authority.

Sometimes this show is like a daytime soap opera with its simplified emotional drama but the story telling is always intriguing. If I have to look at Mercer trying to look ultra-sincere in a way, way too long close up (fast becoming a drinking game worthy cliche), without the relief of knowing he's also kind of a doofus who would stalk his ex-wife from a shuttle craft, I'm gonna laugh in Seth's overacting face. I don't know how I feel. I'm still crying. She was becoming one of my favorite characters, but it's hard to not admit that her story arc, although brief, was absolutely flawless. I'm so sad yet so impressed at the same time. And I'm blown away. Even more blown away than when we lost Tasha Yar. Charly had a hell of a voice too. We must have more of this absolutely phenomenal and brilliant series. Genious, it would be a crime and also an insult to Charly's character if they do not renew for multiple seasons. I wonder if time travel tricks can bring the character back? I just can't believe we've lost her. She was super hot too.

Not sure if you joke or not, but it is true how we connect things. 22 years ago I was driving and saw the aftermath of a really bad accident on the opposite side of the motorway where I later found out a cyclist had been killed by a Land Rover. The song Pure Shores by All Saints was playing on the radio at the time, and even to this day whenever I hear that song, it brings that image back to me.

Nice thing is that you don't see her die so some time travel, a cloaked ship, and a transporter could bring her back.

Although that's a possibility as sci-fi is notorious for bringing back dead characters, I believe her statement about "I'm here, Amanda" was self evident that she died. In some ways her character was never happy having survived and always lamented over the loss of her friend.
It was a perfect story arc, and I think it would cheapen her character and her accomplishments that was attained in this episode to have her live instead of going out as a selfless hero.
