My best friend is currently in the formal diagnosis portion of her ADHD journey, she is a year younger than you.
The relief she feels at simply being acknowledged is palpable, and finally being in the position to DO SOMETHING about it is clearly improving her overall mental health. She's been crying too.
Wishing you much success and hope you receive your long overdue answers and the treatment and relief you (and she) deserve!

I've just been diagnosed with ADD at 48 thanks to my kids' school requesting them to be tested. It felt validating to know my limitations was not because of laziness.

They're making a distinction between typical and atypical because ADHD is a medical diagnosis not a personality trait. You have to be impaired to get a medical diagnosis. There's nothing wrong with stating that fact. I have Asperger's syndrome myself and i have impairments. Doesn't mean I'm not competent or good at anything though. There's also people with much higher support requirements than i and it would be a travesty to keep the narrative of it's just a difference when it isn't and they require support.
Why is this researcher acting like ADHD is one size fits all? ADHD manifests in a variety of ways

Lost me when she compared ADHD children to "normal" children. Precision of language is important. Variation in a human population is normal.

From the weird presenter to the lack of scientific backing to the odd choices in words (although that might in part be a language barrier thing) this was just hard to watch.
I just got diagnosed. After 50 it feels like vindication to get a diagnosis. Imposing norms shouldn’t be the standard response to differences.
This piece literally did not answer the question it proposed. I actually now have more questions.

I genuinely have ADHD and I'm trying to mitigate the stupid actions and crap that falls from my lips and the more information and understanding I have the more Adult like I can be, even though I am by all accounts an Adult.
Just imagine being 45 and everyone looking at you like you're no more than 18 or 19.

@@moonhajung6742 I will. Thank you. I was diagnosed only recently so I'm still learning what is actually going on. Not the lies told to me in school just to sell Ritalin. I don't think drugs are the answer and the brain scans seem to support that. I figured since the path is either under developed or just not there then what is a drug going to do, exactly what they have been, nothing. Because I really imbue the H part I and everyone else I know thought that it was an overdeveloped gland or something like that. Bit of a shock to be honest.
But thank you for the advice, I will get right on that.

I was diagnosed with adhd years ago, yet taken it off yet suspected autism, yet symptoms are similar. I could go but it's a joke 2 half years for autism test, big pharma don't profit. Buddhist practice helps but still homeless half my life failings ov a broken system.

You're right, of course. "Neurotypical" would be a better word. She's a scientist more concerned with her research than with inclusive language. But she does have a lot to say that's helpful. I hope you won't throw out the baby with the bathwater.
No need to feel bad. I did quite a lot of study myself as my 7yo diagnosed with ADHD and taking daily pills for over a year now. Is fact that ADHD brain has part that underdeveloped than peers but also part that developed too soon than normal child. That's the reason why they're impulsive, naughty, refuse to follow order in nature as they get distracted easily

Same as being gay or anything else. There is a biological norm and then there is an abnormality. It doesn't make abnormal something bad necessarily, its just a statement of a fact from a biological stand point.
Yep Ihave Rubella Syndrome so my ADHD behaviors are really not that surprising to me. I’d be surprised if I had a fairly normal brain. A conversation with me is all over the ballpark unfortunately. Sorry.

So when I was young and was not paying attention or focused, a quick slap to the back of the head got me right back on track, no further issues
I'm sorry that happened to you. Though honestly that sounds like the dream, I have ADHD and no amount of child abuse ever worked on me for more than 20 seconds. Curing it with a few slaps would've been amazing.
Honestly give me a time machine and I'd go back and pull out every one of my fingernails if it would've cured my ADHD.

I used to think that until I tried one of my brothers meds. He takes them and then is able to sit and focus for hours which he can’t usually do. I can usually focus just fine. I took one of his meds and I was pinging off the walls, couldn’t sit still, couldn’t focus, couldn’t stop talking. Exactly like being on speed. If it was a made up condition then the meds wouldn’t affect people differently depending on if they have adhd or not.

Just got to be careful of shitty parents saying they think their child has ADHD. “No Chardonnay, your child is like that because they see Mummy set a bad example” worked in a special school for years with children with behaviour difficulties and 99.9 percent it was always the parent fault.
99.9% is almost never scientific. But do please cite your research..
The problem with phrases like "underdeveloped" or "disabled" is that it implies there is only one way to exist in our cookie-cutter society.
Not saying that some neurodiverse folks can't have underdeveloped brains, or struggle with basic tasks, but that plenty of neurodiverse folks are capable of incredible things, and grouping everyone as underdeveloped is doing more harm than good.
When we create a society that treats everyone with respect, and empowers them, we create a better society.
(My opinion!) I would personally argue that the word disabled fits as otherwise the word has no use whatsoever. For example those who use wheelchairs would not be disabled if the world was without stairs (I have ADHD and am a wheelchair user). It's just a useful term to have to let others know you may need some extra support to function as easily in day-to-day life.

@@initial_kd I never said disability is a dirty word, I personally am mentally and physically disabled. You misread or I wasn't clear. The person in the post above says they don't like the word disabled.
Also most (if not all) disabilities are medical diagnoses,so the second part of your comment doesn't make a huge amount of sense.
To clarify, you don't have to see yourself as disabled if you are neurodivergent, I just see it as a good word. In fact I would argue the reason why a lot of people who are neurodivergent don't call themselves disabled is likely because of some internalised ableism.
Those without adhd are so obviously the ones who are disabled.
