ADHD and Me: How did harmful narratives sustain my silent struggle? | Kate Luebkeman | TEDxQuestU

  • This talk addresses the common stigmas and prejudices surrounding ADHD and raises awareness for people living with the condition with the aim of generating more nuanced discussions. Kate Luebkeman is a fourth-year student at Quest studying the experiences of women who perform stand-up comedy. Outside of advocacy work and school, she loves to sing loudly in the shower, watch Late Night With Seth Myers and Brooklyn Nine Nine, dance to Lizzo and Ariana Grande, film UA-cam videos that she will never post, and obsessively check her email. She is also addicted to changing her room as an external manifestation of her ever-buzzing brain, so she completes a dorm renovation once every two months. She was inspired to speak at TEDx about ADHD after receiving a late-in-life diagnosis this past summer that changed her life. She believes that if we talked about ADHD in a more nuanced and informed way, she could have received the help she needed years earlier. Kate hopes this talk can address common stigmas and prejudices, and raise awareness for the people with ADHD that are often left on the margins, struggling in silence to stay afloat. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Something that still bugs me is how people will say "everyone has ADHD"

I think it's because people with ADHD see these symptoms everywhere, forgetting that LOADS of people are going undiagnosed.
So I think the hyperbolic "everyone has ADHD" actually has a surprising amount of truth to it. Especially when you consider non-typical presentation. What about those without hyperactivity or inattentiveness, but have HORRIBLE crippling Executive Dysfunction and Emotional Dysregulation, *trigger specific* anxiety and depression etc.

As everything in life, there’s more awareness. It’s like narcissistic behaviors, many ppl have learnt about this bc they’ve had relationships with such individuals. Ten years ago you really didn’t hear about it, doesn’t mean these ppl didn’t have the relationships. We cannot negate when clarity is brought to a crippling mind and not know why we’ve felt so differently our entire life. We relate bc we do these things, it’s factual. I became aware when I read an article that described the frenzy in shopping. I started digging and digging and I have more than half the symptoms. All my life I’ve struggled, while trying to improve, now, I know why. There’s an answer.

@@josephdavis3472 not all executive function issues, emotional dysregulation, anxiety and depression are caused by ADHD. There are TONS of other diagnoses that cover these symptoms. ADHD is a specific set of challenges that impairs a person's ability to function in our current society, NOT a blanket diagnosis for everyone who has some of the symptoms
How many times did you have to watch this video to actually understand and take in the entirety of it's content? Less than 3? If so, you probably don't have ADHD

I'm 68. All my life I've struggled to do what was expected of me, to understand what was going on around me and to be appropriate. My memory has always been bad, I lose and misplace things constantly, struggle to be on time, have constant anxiety and cannot keep a clean house and avoid social occasions whenever possible. I'm tired of being called lazy, disorganized, rude, flakey, eccentric, weird when I'm trying so hard. Most of the time I'm exhausted. At least now that I'm old not many demands are being made on me but I would like to know what it is to be happy and to feel equilibrium before I leave this world.

I’m nearly 50. I’ve recently recognised the traits of adhd and it’s making soooo much sense for how my life is.
For me it comes with some amazing highs and some huge lows.
I’ve suffered a lot with chronic pain and that’s very common with adhd people. No one talks about it.

I like how she mentioned that ADHD is not even recognized or fully understood in various parts of the world. When I lived in Japan, the concept seemed to be foreign, or the idea of being somewhat normal yet neuro deficient just didn’t exist. It’s either you succeed or you don’t. It’s either you work hard or you don’t. Everything is determined by test scores, which is a nightmare for most people with ADHD.

I'm ADHD, but I have adjusted very well. I'm still nowhere near neurotypical, but I can stay quiet more than I used to (pain changes people). Since I'm aware I talk a lot during convos, I make a conscious effort to make sure the other person gets equal time to talk. Maybe cause I think of it as a game, and I win cause I didn't hog the convo/it was balanced. Haha I want people to like me, but, heck, even after I do what is "right" they still are intimidated by my "energy." Oh, well! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've seen 100 videos so far, TEDx and otherwise, on this topic. And ADHD is different in everyone i know, but how it's described here, fits what i experience to a tee... Though, i'm 43 and haven't been diagnosed yet, but i've been trying to get into see a therapist for the past 2-3 years, but because of Covid, the waiting lists in Denmark have gotten REAL long. So i can't see an ADHD specialized therapist until 2024... Been diagnosed with anxiety and depression previously... But i've come to realize those are symptoms for me, not causes for my problems... But oh well, i'll get there... Thanks for a brilliant video, even if it was scary accurate to what i experience on a daily basis...

Greetings. 54, M from Canada. Diagnosed at 7 w/ADD (impulse sub-type). I couldn’t get why everyone so frustrated by me. I once got sucker punched and ko’d with no idea why or even who. A friend (whose car I woke up in) said I resembled a newborn deer when I came to. It took me 30 years to be convinced to return to the spot. Thankfully, it was totally reno’d which kept the panic attack at bay. Bullied daily my whole life, adulthood incl, I still could not see me. One day, a guy I worked with said “ Don’t be an A-hole your whole life” At that moment, I could see in me what I hated in others. ADD is hard on me physically, as I have 4 cervical discs in my neck moderate to severe, fully torn rotator (brought on by a torn trapezius. Inoperable as it’s the portion that attaches to my lung). That comes with a high bleeding risk. Left side of my body feels 54 (could be due to that punch).
I used to play several instruments, MTB(can’t ride a bike all now). ADD has cost me the things that helped me. It’s brought me shame which is the worst. As of today, I’m an agoraphobe, as leaving the house gets me in trouble, or vice versa.

So I went off meds for a number of years , worst decision ever btw . Then I found a doctor after moving to Florida that prescribed me Desoxyn. Truly life changing

Hopefully you can avoid hurdles, but even if you can't...It's worth it.

Can we please stop encouraging the idea that we are victims? People always say “I’m not a victim but…I want society to change to accommodate ME.” This reinforces NOT reduces stigma. Let each of us stand on our own and tell people case by case - “I think differently than you do. Here is what I need to be successful in this challenge.”
Or here are the tools and awareness I’m going to use to be successful.
Yes. I am neurodivergent but my differences are NOT the same as your differences. Should we drill down and use the diversity among us as further separation? “ isn’t it funny that “diversity” and “divide” start out the same? To be separate and apart from. “Oh my hyperactivity shows up as irritability which is way more harmful than your inability to sit still which is way more harmful than a tic you’ve developed.”
I am not a victim of my ADHD or of society. Society is learning as am I because I am PART of society not “apart” from society. My power comes from driving my own bus. I value the knowledge that there are others who struggle as I do and I learn FROM them
I’m not a narcissist. I don’t need others to single me out to focus on me and my differences. I am different from you and you and you. I am not unique and want to be recognized for what I contribute NOT simply because I exist or for what I take

    • @alaskangirl4502
      @alaskangirl4502 Рік тому +1

But the point is that society has been built to accommodate those that are NOT neurodivergent. If no one advocates for themselves then how will our world ever be made more accessible to those with disabilities?

Have 2 options here. Either it’s increasing due to intake (such as food and its additional products added that are knew) or it’s always been this way and everyone is built unique.
Or its both of the above.
There is no “normal”. That much is a lie.
And their is no fix, aa that too is a lie.
So the only option is to avoid putting something in your body that is clearly increasing what wasn’t naturally there is such abundance as previously and the remainder use to your advantage, because that's the way your made and not to seek piety or need to explain a “condition” that isn’t like everyone else. Nor to identify yourself as special.
Everyone has something whether or not they know it.
Psychologist like everyone to be the same and those who want to be like everyone seek a psychologist and psychologist on the whole are weird people just judging others based on a check off list handed down to them by people that still torturing people today and have no real or lasting solutions to the problems they try and solve. And that being psychology in its educated since is godless, just like its pillar it sits on of evolutionary theory and its twin in the physical realm of modern medicine.
If I went to a Psychologist I would have ADHD, ADD, Aspergers, dyslexia, narcissist, ocd and who knows what else.
You’re not the problem. Nor does anybody need to be aware of it, other than the fact that everyone is unique and so get use to it.
