Binkov had a very good point on Truman's restraint against the normalization of the use of nukes. In 1951, the US had more nukes than the Soviets. If the US had used nukes extensively against the Chinese Communists as planned by MacArthur, there would be a good chance that the Soviets could use nukes equally extensively as tactical weapons once their nuke production was fully established. Nukes were also getting ever more powerful when the US made the first hydrogen bomb in 1952, and the Soviets followed close behind to have their own hydrogen bomb in 1953. The planet might not have survived that many hydrogen bombs being used tactically. Truman's restraint had probably saved the planet.

Funny In 1969, is the Soviet's turn thinking of nuking China due to border conflicts. The Chinese dodged the bullet twice!
That's major reason why the US got China on their side in 1970s-1990s, you know, before the collapse of USSR...
Later, China developed the atomic bomb using the most primitive methods at any cost. When the first atomic bomb was tested, President Kennedy secretly instructed Taiwan to send special forces to be carried by the US Air Force to the raid test site. Unfortunately, President Kennedy was assassinated in broad daylight,
In these days when the US president was vacant, the raid plan was shelved, and China successfully carried out the first atomic bomb device test, and a huge mushroom cloud rose up.

Hey Binkov, love your videos.
Stalin sent more than just planes - he sent pilots, too. The North Korean "air force" were all Soviet planes piloted by Soviet pilots. My grandfather served in the US Army in Korea, and told me whenever they came across a downed "North Korean" plane, the pilots were always Caucasian - not Korean or Chinese. He claims they never found a pilot alive after a crash, but kind of hinted that there was an understanding that a live pilot wouldn't be taken prisoner as a live pilot would cause more problems with the Soviets than an expired one.
Granted this is hearsay from gramps, but a lot of academic research suggests this was the case, too.
That’s half true. The Soviet’s did provide all the planes and some pilots but most of the pilots were still Korean

So true.
Because they're not allowed to. Teachers must teach from state approved text books, on school approved plans that draw minimal criticism from parents.
So you get the lame version in case your mom is a Karen or you start to doubt the US.
We didn't learn any of this shit in school, though I think it should be taught as it reminds of how close we can come to armageddon. I believe the Soviets were afraid of the Chinese in a conventional war and therefore prepared to use tactical nukes. They publicly threatened Mao to discourage an all-out war. I believe the Soviets back then hated Mao. Mao was a fuc.....ing narcissist moron.
That would be 1956, and the Kruschev Era. Mao wanted to purge China of ALL soviet influences. Stalin died in 1953. Mao suspected something "wrong", in terms of ideology, after Russia tried to remove-reform all the mistakes Stalin made.

I can’t comprehend how people can still justify the use of nuclear weapons, it’s absurd.
@@jacksonsun9050 Atomic warheads are not H-Bombs . And to note that both places the US used atom bombs (Hiroshima, Nagasaki) are doing fine. No cancer or disease increase and both populace industrial cities. H-Bombs delivered by ICBM's are civilization killers but the USSR didn't have them at the time and the US could have shot down most or even all of the Russian Bombers entering US airspace and what few managed to get here, we could rebuild. Whether we should have is a separate argument though/
The comments are completely ignorant about the war, if they didn't sign the armistice, the Korean infrastructure would have been worst, and if they did drop the bomb, the Soviets would have got better excuses to nuke their enemies, which would cause further nuclear annihilation. Korea wouldn't be the same from this timeline, but the government would have been similar to Myanmar.
Exactly, some comments are acting like 'murica actually nuked china.
@Nick Bennett
It wouldn't, nuking China is worst, and the event wouldn't be just Korea, but the entire world. If China was nuked, the USSR would have involved and created sanctions at the Security council. When that happens, the United Nation would collapse into two kinds of side. The west and the east. Both hated each other due to an ideological difference. If China was nuked, the USSR would most likely intervene and send its militants to support North Korea, the USSR would have used this excuse to nuke other nations which heavily criticize US foreign policy by using targeting hypocrisy. Since China is extremely big, the war will never be over until South Korea surrendered, if they did nuke, North Korea would have gain more territories due to the geography, despite the supply lines, the Soviets would have to issue it. The generals and Truman were both correct that starting an apocalypse to justify a small nation is a terrific idea. If you're invested in history, you would realize that Communism used to be popular which explains the guerillas in South Korea, this would have done similar to the Vietnam war. And what does insult exactly made the argument discussed easier? I suppose you wanted to damage my mentality.

@@stevekillgore9272 thats fine but history shows MacArthur was removed since his desire to use atomic weapons against our other enemies. This painted him as radical and uncompromising. MacArthur could have adjusted his tactics to still attack the Chinese by explaining the threat the Chinese posed to our interest. At the same time not alienating himself. I am a huge Mac fan. And I believe he was correct in his assessment of the future enemies we would face. But he did fail in the end. Not from weakness or cowardice. But from lack of imagination when it counted and offering compromise suitable to others desires. He was a great general and man but he lacked political finesse. He was enamored by the brightness of his own star and failed to identify the enemies hidden in the shadows.

When did stalin kill tens of milions buddy?
@The Nova renaissance The USSR had a minor arsenal and no ability to deliver it to the USA in 1950. They weren't nuking anybody
@The Nova renaissance In the video he explains that the Soviet Union had far fewer nuclear weapons than the United States. Mutual destruction was inconceivable.
@The Nova renaissance At the time, the USSR wouldn't have been able to "nuke the US into the stone age". The Soviets successfully detonated a nuke for the first time only a few months earlier. They didn't have a large enough number of bombs and they hadn't figured out the delivery system with bombers and ICBMs haven't been conceived yet. For perspective, North Korea detonated their first nuke 16 years ago and their nuclear strike capabilities are still pathetic as a threat to the continental United States.
In 1950, if we really stretch it and shoot the same bullethole multiple times, the Soviets theoretically may have been able to bomb the US with nuclear weapons but it was not a threat that was credible enough to change the political math. The binary condition of simply having nukes was all the USSR could rely on for political weight involving nukes.
@abcde fghij Stalin killed 5-9 million people. Still horrible of course but the tens of millions think your referencing comes from “the black book of communist” a frequently debunked piece of American propaganda from the Cold War. The book counts Nazi soldiers ass victims of Stalin for Christ sake. This isn’t to aggrandize Stalin of course he was a monster but anybody who says he and Hitler were the same are also engaging in denialism. Every major power will be using nuclear weapons
If he did, the human race would be annihilated. You wouldn’t be to make this comment smh
A comment on the use of nukes, at that time, for "tactical" purposes. In order to justify, from a use of limited resources standpoint, using a nuclear weapon, you would need a large concentration of enemy forces. That would require intel with a big lead time. Nuclear warheads at that time had to be used within a few days...a week at most...of being assembled. It took a team from 48 to 72 hours to assemble a bomb. Once assembled, you then had 3 days to use it The heat from the uranium/plutonium cores would start to melt the electronics inside the bomb after about a week. Also, the bombs at that time used a lead battery for power...the same kind as were used in cars at that time. Those batteries would only last in those bombs for about 3 days before losing power. So what a commander would need is to know that 5 to 6 days from now, the enemy will have a large sized....say several divisions at least...force at a particular place. The chance of a commander in the early 1950s getting that kind of a lead time in intel was going to be fairly small.
Good analysis
People often know when the war is fought in but often treat the technologies and tactic of that time as same as now.
This is false. Nuclear weapons do not meltdown on their own like that.
Are you from a family with any military experience? War is never clean, with or without nuclear weapons.

Don't think you really studied this war in detail. Fact the Chinese lost around 650 000 troops US lost just over 50 000.
Reason chinese lacked
artillery tanks and air cover.
U.s lacked will. Chinese dictatorship was willing to accept casualties.
Of course after Stslins death US could have won and united Korea. But American sentiment was to accept status wuo ante.
Too bad.

Better to nuke US and end the monopoly

I’m sorry to have to bring this to your attention, however I found a point you may have overlooked.
Canada is a founding member of NATO. At the beginning this video, the map presented, showed that Canada was not a part of NATO. Please, if your video is able to be edited, please do so.

Any country has a right to defend itself
Including political dictatorships / tyrannies?
Even tho 5 star general will not be retired until death.
This plan was the reason why general McArthur loses his commanding right in Korea.
They almost got nuked twice. The Soviets were planning on nuking them also
Make that 3 times then. They were threatened with nukes after planning to invade Taiwan. The US made them back down immediately after that threat.
McCarther: Hey, mind if I go full-on maniacal villian?
Truman: How 'bout, no.
McCarther: Pleeeease!
Truman: You're fired.
@ilgamesh lol, ummm, no.
Or at least there’s no way to really support that claim. Generally, the US had more influence on average than the USSR throughout the Cold War. It would more likely be the case that such 3rd World Nations would get behind the US, even if just begrudgingly in the hopes that they wouldn’t get nuked. Asia might have leaned more towards The Soviet Union and China, but South America and Africa would be solidly in the West’s sphere of influence
Also, 3rd world countries uniting, pfft, lol. That’s adorable
@ilgamesh Fair point, though this assumes that the Soviet Union doesn't use their own nuclear weapons in some other proxy war, which they would feel more comfortable doing once the US set the precedent.
Presuming you can read reasonably well, I suggest William Manchester's book AMERICAN CAESAR, etc. about MacArthur. It's easy to find, and is available on Kindle as well.
The bloodthirsty bias of the bulk of the viewers of this channel makes me sick
So much for hating the government and not the people. I'd wager some of em are trying to do mental gymnastics on how nuking the fuck out of China is good for the Chinese, unless you're a Japanese ultranationalist, in which none of that is necessary

McArthur: i paid for the whole US arsenal and i'm going to use the whole US arsenal
It’s safe to say it’s better in South Korea than North Korea.
Unless your within range of NK artillery. Sure NK would lose a war with SK, US unless China intervened. The initial damage would still be extensive.
I forgot everything oversimplified said, but it went something like, Both leaders were sweet looking old men, but dont let that fool you, they were both ruthless dictators

Alternatehistoryhub covered this topic from less tactical and more sort of philosophical point of view. I highly recommend also watching their video.
That's one reason why MacArthur was fired.
Hey, you could do state vs state battles?
Binkov, please dont forget spanish subs! Greetings from Chile, South America! Great job!
Very good video. Also of important note MacArthur was far from the only person who didn't think that China would send troops into Korea. It was also the overwhelming opinion of the officer corp of the US military, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, President Truman, his administration and most of all the CIA. The CIA has many articles on their site saying how the information they gave to the military and President Truman's administration regarding if China would send troops into Korea as one of their biggest mistakes ever. Those articles they advice how the US and the CIA can avoid making those same mistakes again.
Can you give me some sources for further reading?
@@amrahmed7856 If you google "CIA failures in Korean War" or CIA failure to predict Chinese involvement to Korean War" you'll get many articles from the CIA's website and elsewhere but if you want the official document to review you can see it below. Just a warning though it is a tome:

They forgot to account for how winning against the USA and UN, even bringing them to a standstill, was a surefire way to earn prestige and legitimately for the PRC and yet prevent another civil war or warlord era
Never realized Stalin's death ended the war.
Maybe you could do another West vs East WW 3 scenario but in 1950's.
What is the exact 'Norris & Kristensen' citation, thx...?
Canada is also part of NATO
Mao was never eager to aid Korea. He believed that this war was a Korean issue and didn't intervene until they cross the 38th parallel. China warned the US that if they crossed then China would not sit idle. This is the reason why they supported the North. Also why North Vietnam was never invaded.
South Koreans crossed into the North and dragged the US in. Syngman Rhee wanted a unified Korea.
Mao had already planned to bring Korea under communism before the 38th parallel was even crossed. Many Koreans from PLA were sent to KPA and North Korea was promised by China that they'd intervene prior the invasion. It's the Soviets who were hesitating to escalate the war because they wanted North Korea to win the war swiftly
Hey Binkov do a similar videos if they used nukes during vietnam war
