Turkey uses laser weapon technology to shoot down Chinese UAV Wing Loong II in Libya ......... Really important news often goes unnoticed. They occur, no one notices them, but the events mentioned in this news often have consequences that later, having developed to a large scale, make observers gasp - and it’s good, if only out of surprise. Drones alone is not everything. It has to be used in coordination with other systems and forces. Turkey and Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey, uses the drones in combination with Turkey's own EW (Electronic Warfare) systems. There are tens of footages of Turkish drones destroying ACTIVE (you can see their radar spinning etc.) pantsirs, S-300 and other AA systems, to the point it has become a meme. However, i think it would be fair to point out that Haftar, assad and the armenians did/do not have a multilayered AA defense net backed with other defensive EW systems, experience and professionalism. However, the drones have proven that they can be DEVASTATING, slowly whittling down an exposed enemy. During the Armenian-Azerbaijan war alone you can easily count up to ~1500 casualties for the Armenian side through drone footages alone. It's crazy.
Can you please provide a link. I have not seen a single video of any S300 system being destroyed. I've seen 1 video of a Panstir being hit (NOT DESTROYED) by Israeli drones but that's it.

Iraq mostly fought out in the open and lost there, sparing a lot of collateral damage. The ongoing insurgencies have been easier to deal with without heavy ordinance. I think Afghanistan was more or less counter insurgency from the start. The potential for mass casualty wars exists, but the proper mix of diplomacy and deterrence have kept larger nations out of direct conflict with one another since WW2.

Only countries that can afford to make this expensive compromise in tech vs lives do it. And even when less lethal tactics are carried out by world powers that could end their adversaries easily in total inhalation, the rest of the planet chides them for being more advanced and thus saving lives in the combat by using high tech weapons. People don’t recall the mass distractions that crippled the planet as a viable tactic against the enemy. Imagine if carpet bombing was still a tactic. Less countries may be at war today if they knew this was the end option.
If the Armored Core series has taught me anything, it's that giant mechs with quirky pilots are a hard counter to drones in any situation but a sequel hook.
It's too late for that. IFF in hum,ans isn't too great either TBH. I don't think it will change much. Counter-drone tech will be developed and deployed in greater and greater numbers. The war in the Caucasus I think showed they can have a good impact, but they are not impervious. And to the nations who paid attention, they will likely learn a lot from that and other conflicts going on where drones are used. Almost like the Spanish Civil War served as a big learning tool for many nations like the USSR and German Empire/Reich(they mean the same thing essentially) whatever you prefer calling it when it came to armoured vehicles and co-operation with air support. I suspect we will see a larger proliferation of CIWS-like system for ground use. AAA guns essentially with shorter range targeting system that can quickly and effectively engage incoming drones. p.s. I made this comment at the start of the video. Will update soon. Turns out the video pretty much says what I thought, just in far more detail and a more entertaining method of delivery :D

Drones are already flying on pre-set flight path, so they just continue even when jammed. I guess the only device that need human control is the camera. As for targeting, if you are driving a Toyota land cruiser, better switch it into something more fancy, such as a Porsche or Ferrari, because AI or human would simply assume you are a drug dealer, not worthy of a missile....

Armenians should have every right to sweat nervously, especially if the Azeri takes advantage of their newly gained territory to further bolster their military, & plan to take Southern Armenia to connect their enclave to the mainland. Not even "System of a Down" can save Armenia.
How about Libya, where the LNA had much more and more modern equipment, lots of foreign suppliers (France, UAE, Egypt), more manpower but still lost to the people that only had turkish drones as outside support?
@Julius Caesar The problem with the Taliban is that you cannot differentiate between Taliban and civilian. Taliban hide as civilians between civilians. They conduct guerilla hit and run tactics before returning to a civilian state. Conventional armies move in formation and settle in as a unit. It is clear who is who. So it is also easy to hit them with drone strikes. Also, military vehicles are easier to identify than civilian vehicles. Thus, the comparison you make with the Taliban is like compring apples and oranges. What makes drones very good is their cheapness. You can make a lot of them making it impossible for anti-air systems to shoot them all down, unlike airplanes, which are big and expensive. Armenia didn't only lose due to being poor and having poor leadership, Armenia lost because there is no defense against a swarm of drones, especially if you combine the fleet with Israeli kamikaze drones which have the purpose of distracting anti-air.

What was the last war decided by fighting between tanks? 1973 Yom Kippur War? In just about every war since then the deciding factor was high-tech air power, low-tech third world infantry/technical warfare, or how good the occupying side was at counter-insurgency (usually terrible).
Drone are just an other element of air superiority, tanks were always weaks against air force and artillery. Beside that tanks are still use in modern conflicts even in urban warfare
Saw a concept video once for a small, flying drone equipped with a camera, sophisticated facial recognition software, and a small explosive charge. The assassination possibilities are terrifying.
Problem with facial recognition software, it works best with white males, if you're target is black or better yet an asian woman, the drone will never find it's target or has a 50% chance of targeting the wrong person.

@@rhodium1096 Drones are stupidly cheap, so what if some of them don't get through? That's the point - losing a bunch of drones is just some numbers in military budget nobody cares about; losing actual soldiers in large numbers makes wars politically toxic. @@rhodium1096 They are price performance kings. TB2s destroyed much more then their worth even if few of them were shot down. And if you add moral and trained personel cost to already weaker opponent it makes it clearer how op drones are against manned systems.
Actually during the Nagorno Karabakh war Azerbaijan destroyed tactical ballistic OTR-21 Tochka, Scud B and even S300 surface-to-air missile systems of Armenia. Azerbaijan used cheap and very old self-flying planes like the Antonov An2 (kukuruznik) to detect the radar systems of S300. Later overwhelmed drone attacks launched and all these Turkish made Bayraktar TB2 drones, Israeli made Elbit Hermes 900, IAI Harop and Azerbaijani made light suicide drones like Zerbe used in collaboration to accomplish the missions.

Nothing is unstoppable, and there are no permanent "one size fits all" or "I win" solutions in warfare. This has always been and will always be the case. However, there are kind of golden ages for certain weapon systems and drones may enjoy some of that right now. Counter- measures are well on the way though, e.g. lasers (and high rate of fire AA- guns are making a slow comeback, too).
Jamming, emp & DEW weaponry will cheaply & easily delete these drones, any aerial attack in fact. Microwave lasers are the best. Drones are only useful against civilians & poor & incompetent govts. Drones are also only deployed by war criminal regimes.
@Lake I don't disagree with everything, but I kinda disagree on the counter measures being totally parallel to conventional anti air capabilities. There are totally capable AA systems in use already, but they are not cost effective. It doesn't make much sense to launch a 500000$ missile against a 50000$ drone, even if you hit every time. In my opinion what is coming is close range systems with very low cost per downed drone, like lasers and new hi- tech AA- guns. These are not very effective against conventional air power, mainly because of the low range.
@Lake Well that's where we disagree, I don't see that coming at all. Short range anti drone measures yes, but in my opinion they are of very limited use against conventinal air power.
@Lake No I'm not saying that, modern conventional air power has to evolve as well (and it is). Of course it's possible there will be game changers in anti air in general, but I just don't see them being the same ones that are going to provide cost effective counter to drones. In addition to lasers, for example Bofors and Rheinmetall are already providing high rate of fire AA- guns that not only have computerized fire control, but also automatically programmable shells shot per shot. Mode of fuse (delay, proximity, impact, delayed impact), submunitions angle of cone (tungsten pellets) etc. Great and relatively economical against drones, but hopelessly out of range for anything else than ground attack jets and helicopters. As for lasers, no matter how high power lasers you build and how well you manage to fight the dissipation in the athmosphere, it's still a line of sight weapon that requires a linear connection between the source and the target. Earth's curvature will set a hard upper limit for it, unless you fire it from... an aircraft :) Both conventional planes and drones will be around for the foreseeable future (and integrating already in 5th gen fighters like F- 35), and so is anti air in a constant race with them. My point really was only that no matter how novel the drones are right now and how successful they seem to be, they are not invincible, not even close. Summa summarum; since WW2 at the latest, combined arms has been the way to go and that's the way it's going to be for our lifetime at least.
@Lake Before you accuse me of constructing a strawman, take a look at the text on the thumbnail of this video. "Are drones unstoppable?". I think I have made many reasonable arguments why this is not the case, yet you don't seem to acknowledge hardly any of them. Like I said, drones will be around and integrated into conventional air power via networking, but they are not going to replace fighter-bomber jets during our lifetime. This conversation has been getting circular. If I may I would like to accuse you too of some fallacy that I cannot prove, like you couldn't prove the one you accused me of. You seem to be so heavily invested, more likely emotionally than economically in drones being "the great equalizer" between strong and weak airforces and negating the whole power of balance, that you don't want to see the points against it. So my guess is you are ideologically against a strong air power, likely the strongest one there is i.e. NATO and just can't let go of your wishful thought that drones will negate their superiority. Drones will be bigger and better equipped in the future, and finally autonomous, but at that stage they are not really drones any more from the particular point of view we have been discussing them here; they won't be cheap and easy to produce and maintain.
Military vehicles simply must return to having machine guns for anti-aircraft role. It may also be a good idea to issue out shotguns, perhaps one per squad, for eliminating small drones. Have the soldiers practice sporting clays and skeet shooting to develop skill at hitting flying targets.
I think the biggest problem with AI-directed drones is that they have little to no ability to determine the difference between friend and foe. Sure, IFF systems may be vital in modern air-to-air combat but they have malfunctioned before even though it was never on the scale of the IFF malfunctions shown in Ace Combat 7. However, AC7 has shown that the biggest advantage humans have over drones is that they are able to adapt to IFF malfunctions while drones have no such capability. This became especially important as the conflict in the game became an absolute CF with very few people knowing who's on whose side but the drones taking this handicap especially hard. While the game may be an artificial construct, the point still stands that any belief in a "clean" war is little more than a fantasy and while drones may make it easier to kill that thing over there, human judgement is always necessary to decide whether or not you should.
Doesn’t matter after the first shot either way. There’s a video of a blue on blue air strike. The pilots rarely miss their shot AND have a chance to correct for FF
I was wondering how many people were also shown this one in the recommend bar at this point, not realizing this was over a year old when I clicked. The part about how drones could all be jammed by a modern military and therefore lose all effectiveness, or how the Bayraktar could be shot down too much to be worth the price didn't age too well.
Well Turkey is sending satillite data link with Gokturk 2 and it will has (Synthetic Aparture Radar) satiltle next year Gokturk 3 so the Drone jamming will be even more complicated task
That missile launch at 19:18 looks so darn cool. It always surprises me how much the "small inexpensive" drones cost. A drone which costs one million dollars is supposed to be inexpensive. Of course I only have experience with hobby drones so I must be missing some important features which drive up the price.

This debate about drones mirrors debates about air power before WW2. No one was yet sure how useful planes could be. Advocates talked about a future in which airpower would be indispensable. Opponents said 'maybe against weak opponents but good air defences would negate the impact'. Same thing today 'jamming or cyber or whatever are an easy fix' is claimed. People will only realise the true importance of drones the day a 1st world army is decimated by them. Just as the machinegun was not fully appreciated until british soldiers got shredded by it in WW1.
They are changing the "morality of war" I will explain: Wars are fought with piloted planes (directly). planes drop bombs, strafe, and fight other planes. Men get hurt, killed, or injured directly. Thus, a direct link to injury is present. Soldiers fight personally. They get killed, injured and maimed. But, it is a personal injury. When you introduce an indirect method of warfare, you introduce "a video game morality". This morality breeds "I am safe from harm and injury. Thus, I am invincible and can not be harmed if my drone is shot down. I simply will "reboot and another drone will take its place.". This is what I call "video game morality". In a piloted plane, the pilot actually feels the pain and potential death. To him, morality of war is direct and painful. This would be like if every soldier were assigned a War bot. The soldier would not feel the pain, injury or death. The War bot would simply be "video game" - "life replaced" with another one and the soldier would not care if that one gets "killed". The soldier could then (after a long hard day on the battlefield) go back to his room, pop a fresh beer, stretch out and play Call of duty. To him the "morality and consequences of war" are nothing more than a video game. An excellent example is the SS and orders: the SS were very much part of the extermination of the Jews, poles, and "enemies of the state" at first, they would put them in a trench and shoot the people. But, this did not last long. The psychological effect directly killing people soon took its toll. SS Soldiers would become PTSD(d) and refuse to shoot anymore. At first, it was a small minority (quick Mil justice - shot dead SS Soldier ) happened. As said extermination continued, far too many refused, "we can not handle the psychological effect of directly killing them anymore and refuse to continue.". The Officers could not shoot an entire Company of SS Soldiers. So, poison gas was created. A group of SS soldiers "escorted" them into "their last and final shower on earth", closed the doors, the gas dropped, and people died. The gas "did the killing" and the SS were absolved of direct murder and or killing. Thus, they could go on living and not be concerned about the indirect method (the gas did the job - they only escorted them into the room and closed the doors). This gas turned out to be extremely efficient. The same is for drones. It is easy to "disassociate one's self from the act and psychological effect of one's actions" if one does not see the direct effect directly or remove the actual feelings attached to the act of killing.
The drone operator also doesnt pit as mich effort in keeping the drone alive as a pilot, because his life isnt at risk. Also, war could become just smashing toys together until one side runs out.
Now imagine swarm of small drones vs any current AA system. Literally AA system can't trace and down all of them. Turkey used laser to down China drone. Hitler used drones against London, so what did we do? We shot them down by the thousand! Admittedly some got through, but for every one that got through at least four were shot down. They were faster than today's drones and could do 400 mph. If Hitler had used today's 300 mph drones, hardly any would have got through. If Mitsubishi restarted its Zero assembly line, that would be the answer to the drone problem except for the very few which can fly at 400 mph above 50,000 feet. No drone can out turn a Zero, and hardly any can outdistance it. The few that can are very expensive.

There isn’t going to be a clean war, the entrance of drones into combat won’t be for the better but it would be a game changer of course but hopefully it will never replace manned aircrafts, having your entire combat force as drones won’t look god when the technology gets leaked or its source codes exploited. There should be a mix of both like what we have now. They all have their place in warfare, should that stability change, the threats change too .

I'm sure small drones integrated into small units will happen. Keeping them small and frolific will likely prevent expensive countermeasures being used against them. And I' sure they'd give a massive advantage to any small force. Be it a 24/7 birds eye veiw, or in the case of weaponized drones the ability to directly attack/suppress hard to reach opponents. Not to mention that having a weaponized drone would probably prevent any opponents from feeling safe in any open-air cover
On the other hand, when the operator is not at risk he can in theory keep his head cool and double or triple check before shooting since he won't die if the drone is shot down.

Drones started as aerial recon then became a weapons platform. Now it's both but it is still easy to shoot them down using lasers, EMP, AAM, SAM and AAA and possibly electronically disrupted by EW systems and particle beams weapons. It could become obsolete very quick. That would leave just satellites and hypersonic aerial vehicles.
I think logistics and training also enter the equation. Logistics from a protected base should be easy and cheap but a single point of failure. Drone operator training is much cheaper vs training for armoured crews. Maintenance of drones is also easier and cheap vs maintenance of armoured forces. Adding the necessary air defence to protect against drones is an added and huge expense to put in the field. Drones are primarily defensive weapons greatly increasing a countries defence. Armour is primarily offensive. Drones make it very expensive to initiate armour offences. Any offensive against a well armed drone advisory will need a good strategy to neutralize the drones first or risk having your armour units destroyed.
how is that, the Syrian systems are very old and in low numbers modern Russian anti air systems can easily shoot down enemy drones no problem I also want to note that an s400 missile typicaly costs less than an s300 since the Turkish drones cost 5+million and the Russians have a larger budget they could even use the s400 against the drones russians also now design and produse 57mm guns with roumored guided ammunition capabilities, if this is true such a platform could be hidden and snipe enemy drones all day long since "passive" tracking (lasers, optics) cannot be detected by the drones, the drone will just dissapear from the sky with the operator opening his mouth wide
@@billwhoever2830 your mistake is to believe those drones fly without any protective measures in the background. Ever heard of Koral EW system? That‘s how Turkey was able to penetrate Syrian airspace during operation spring shield when they annihilated much of the air defence systems like Pantsir and S-300s. Same story in Libya and Karabakh. The enemy was blind and couldn‘t react in time to counter the attack. The targets were destroyed before they even realized what happened. You can note all you want about the S-400, the truth however is that it wasn‘t tested in active battle as of yet. Do you know how Armenia was defeated in such a short time? Azerbaijan used old AN-2 aircraft and modified them into drones that flew into enemy territory as a bait. i imagine as air power switches over to be mostly drones laser communication would become the norm, near immune to jamming, and sidestepping bandwidth limitations.
Any serious drone can function independently of external comms. Although there are non-RF comms that can be used without giving away position, these are generally just used to communicate with a local swarm or relay, not long range. The US has already demonstrated the basic counter to drones when an F35 was used as a data relay for a Paladin to shoot down a drone. Obviously the Paladin is overkill but any Link16+ enabled system could be used.
My information is some turkish drones already have AI. Milsoft technology is still working to improve the AI even more. I am afraid of Skynet from Terminator movies 😅

Once you grant the premise that good enough software hooked up to good enough sensor data can basically achieve psychic-like accuracy, overcoming swarms of drones is just a matter of ensuring the cost of a kill (rounds expended to hit each drone, electricity of laser, etc) is more sustainable than the drones being killed. Even 5.56 becomes a hypothetically effective anti-air round in the hands of a good enough computer with good enough sensors.
Drones and Nano Drone techs are the future of warfare. Funny fact Call of Duty game used drones heavy in combat. It opened up ideas for the military and it changed the way the US looked at drones and future use in Warfare.
If you send only drones then answer is no. Turkey employed network-centric warfare to fuse information coming from various sources, and created an unified picture of the field that used by artillery units, drones, fighter aircraft to save drones from enemy air force, airborne early warning and control aircrafts. Remember two Syrian fighter aircrafts also downed by Turkish fighter aircrafts. If you have a doctrine that combines all of them then you can use drones to inflict heavy casualties on enemy. It is what changes the way of fightning, it is the capability to create and implement a combined doctrine, not just drones by themselves.

Ukrainian drones made by Turkey are currently pretty effective against Russia. Videos of them showing up destroying Russian air defense in Ukraine.

Ww2 was a real benchmark in technological advances and mass destruction. Since then people have been trying to curb war away from total destruction.

They are already in use . Some drones automatically chose target

Turns out the video pretty much says what I thought, just in far more detail and a more entertaining method of delivery :D
American drones chose target selected by an algorithm
@@justanotherlegend3315 Algorithms are notoriously unpredictable, sometimes they behave very strangely under certain conditions. Although when they are used within design parameters they are quite stable. Humans are very good at not following instructions and limitations though.

Earth's curvature will set a hard upper limit for it, unless you fire it from... an aircraft :)
Both conventional planes and drones will be around for the foreseeable future (and integrating already in 5th gen fighters like F- 35), and so is anti air in a constant race with them.
Judging by what's going on Ukraine the most feared weapons are surveillance drones and artillery.

I'd think it would be possible to make a drone with reasonably good capabilities for a few tens of thousands of dollars.

They are changing the "morality of war"
I will explain:
Wars are fought with piloted planes (directly). planes drop bombs, strafe, and fight other planes.
An excellent example is the SS and orders:
the SS were very much part of the extermination of the Jews, poles, and "enemies of the state"
at first, they would put them in a trench and shoot the people.
This. I hope that the usage of drones ends up becoming restricted... but I have doubts in that'll happen for a while.
The drone operator also doesnt pit as mich effort in keeping the drone alive as a pilot, because his life isnt at risk. Also, war could become just smashing toys together until one side runs out.

What makes drones so dangerous, is the dramatically lowered threshold of force, when the operator incurs no risk.
Not exactly true, some of these drones are worth more than soldiers.
On the other hand, when the operator is not at risk he can in theory keep his head cool and double or triple check before shooting since he won't die if the drone is shot down.

Honestly I consider the Goliath Tracked mine to be the first combat usage of drones
The first usage of drone is the TT-26 a russian variant of T-26 guided with no crews and which had an bomb inside in case it not operational, used during winter war.
Belka, Gründer, what did you make this time and whose flight data did you use?
The main problem is that most anti drone weapons include missiles which, while effective at too expensive to engage drones
Any offensive against a well armed drone advisory will need a good strategy to neutralize the drones first or risk having your armour units destroyed.
in short, Turkish defence industry humiliated Russian defence industry
how is that, the Syrian systems are very old and in low numbers
modern Russian anti air systems can easily shoot down enemy drones no problem
I also want to note that an s400 missile typicaly costs less than an s300
since the Turkish drones cost 5+million and the Russians have a larger budget they could even use the s400 against the drones
russians also now design and produse 57mm guns with roumored guided ammunition capabilities, if this is true such a platform could be hidden and snipe enemy drones all day long since "passive" tracking (lasers, optics) cannot be detected by the drones, the drone will just dissapear from the sky with the operator opening his mouth wide

Any serious drone can function independently of external comms. Although there are non-RF comms that can be used without giving away position, these are generally just used to communicate with a local swarm or relay, not long range.

So basically what you are saying is that the spamming tactics from RTS games is now a viable military tactic.

You go underground. Tunnels and hidden bunkers are the way to beat them. You only pop your head up strike then disappear again.

newest turkish drone ammunation has air to air capabilities. this way drones can be act like hordes and fight back against jamming.
also turkey has awacs to commands drones from air.
there are no surviving from drones in large areas. but i believe every country will develop 7/24 on air drone defence system in future.
drones will fight drones on air to prevent attacks. defending from ground against air is not viable option now
Binkov: Armenia and Azerbaijan is same
Azerbaijan: Turkish drones go brrrr
Binkov: Ok, drones are new thing but I will not mention TB2...
Armenians on google: What the hell is TB2 that teared apart our machines..
i'm not an expert at war(or even anything remotely similar), but it seems to me that when you combine different tools effectively, the result is much better than the sum of the results of using the tools separately.
