      Turkey uses laser weapon technology to shoot down Chinese UAV Wing Loong II in Libya

      Really important news often goes unnoticed. They occur, no one notices them, but the events mentioned in this news often have consequences that later, having developed to a large scale, make observers gasp - and it’s good, if only out of surprise. Alexander Timokhin explains.

    Drones alone is not everything. It has to be used in coordination with other systems and forces. Turkey and Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey, uses the drones in combination with Turkey's own EW (Electronic Warfare) systems. There are tens of footages of Turkish drones destroying ACTIVE (you can see their radar spinning etc.) pantsirs, S-300 and other AA systems, to the point it has become a meme. However, i think it would be fair to point out that Haftar, assad and the armenians did/do not have a multilayered AA defense net backed with other defensive EW systems, experience and professionalism. However, the drones have proven that they can be DEVASTATING, slowly whittling down an exposed enemy. During the Armenian-Azerbaijan war alone you can easily count up to ~1500 casualties for the Armenian side through drone footages alone. It's crazy.

      Ww2 was a real benchmark in technological advances and mass destruction. Since then people have been trying to curb war away from total destruction. Only countries that can afford to make this expensive compromise in tech vs lives do it. And even when less lethal tactics are carried out by world powers that could end their adversaries easily in total inhalation, the rest of the planet chides them for being more advanced and thus saving lives in the combat by using high tech weapons. People don’t recall the mass distractions that crippled the planet as a viable tactic against the enemy. Imagine if carpet bombing was still a tactic. Less countries may be at war today if they knew this was the end option.

      It's too late for that. IFF in hum,ans isn't too great either TBH. I don't think it will change much. Counter-drone tech will be developed and deployed in greater and greater numbers. The war in the Caucasus I think showed they can have a good impact, but they are not impervious. And to the nations who paid attention, they will likely learn a lot from that and other conflicts going on where drones are used. Almost like the Spanish Civil War served as a big learning tool for many nations like the USSR and German Empire/Reich(they mean the same thing essentially) whatever you prefer calling it when it came to armoured vehicles and co-operation with air support.
      I suspect we will see a larger proliferation of CIWS-like system for ground use. AAA guns essentially with shorter range targeting system that can quickly and effectively engage incoming drones.
      p.s. I made this comment at the start of the video. Will update soon.
      Turns out the video pretty much says what I thought, just in far more detail and a more entertaining method of delivery :D

      @Julius Caesar The problem with the Taliban is that you cannot differentiate between Taliban and civilian. Taliban hide as civilians between civilians. They conduct guerilla hit and run tactics before returning to a civilian state.
      Conventional armies move in formation and settle in as a unit. It is clear who is who. So it is also easy to hit them with drone strikes. Also, military vehicles are easier to identify than civilian vehicles.
      Thus, the comparison you make with the Taliban is like compring apples and oranges.
      What makes drones very good is their cheapness. You can make a lot of them making it impossible for anti-air systems to shoot them all down, unlike airplanes, which are big and expensive.
      Armenia didn't only lose due to being poor and having poor leadership, Armenia lost because there is no defense against a swarm of drones, especially if you combine the fleet with Israeli kamikaze drones which have the purpose of distracting anti-air.

Later overwhelmed drone attacks launched and all these Turkish made Bayraktar TB2 drones, Israeli made Elbit Hermes 900, IAI Harop and Azerbaijani made light suicide drones like Zerbe used in collaboration to accomplish the missions.

    Nothing is unstoppable, and there are no permanent "one size fits all" or "I win" solutions in warfare. This has always been and will always be the case. However, there are kind of golden ages for certain weapon systems and drones may enjoy some of that right now. Counter- measures are well on the way though, e.g. lasers (and high rate of fire AA- guns are making a slow comeback, too).

    • @dijdave8584
      @dijdave8584 3 роки тому +6

      Jamming, emp & DEW weaponry will cheaply & easily delete these drones, any aerial attack in fact. Microwave lasers are the best.

    • @pultsari9036
      @pultsari9036 3 роки тому +1

      @Lake I don't disagree with everything, but I kinda disagree on the counter measures being totally parallel to conventional anti air capabilities. There are totally capable AA systems in use already, but they are not cost effective. It doesn't make much sense to launch a 500000$ missile against a 50000$ drone, even if you hit every time. In my opinion what is coming is close range systems with very low cost per downed drone, like lasers and new hi- tech AA- guns. These are not very effective against conventional air power, mainly because of the low range.

    • @pultsari9036
      @pultsari9036 3 роки тому

      @Lake Well that's where we disagree, I don't see that coming at all. Short range anti drone measures yes, but in my opinion they are of very limited use against conventinal air power.

    • @pultsari9036
      @pultsari9036 3 роки тому

      @Lake No I'm not saying that, modern conventional air power has to evolve as well (and it is). Of course it's possible there will be game changers in anti air in general, but I just don't see them being the same ones that are going to provide cost effective counter to drones. In addition to lasers, for example Bofors and Rheinmetall are already providing high rate of fire AA- guns that not only have computerized fire control, but also automatically programmable shells shot per shot. Mode of fuse (delay, proximity, impact, delayed impact), submunitions angle of cone (tungsten pellets) etc. Great and relatively economical against drones, but hopelessly out of range for anything else than ground attack jets and helicopters. As for lasers, no matter how high power lasers you build and how well you manage to fight the dissipation in the athmosphere, it's still a line of sight weapon that requires a linear connection between the source and the target. Earth's curvature will set a hard upper limit for it, unless you fire it from... an aircraft :)
      Both conventional planes and drones will be around for the foreseeable future (and integrating already in 5th gen fighters like F- 35), and so is anti air in a constant race with them. My point really was only that no matter how novel the drones are right now and how successful they seem to be, they are not invincible, not even close.
      Summa summarum; since WW2 at the latest, combined arms has been the way to go and that's the way it's going to be for our lifetime at least.

    • @pultsari9036
      @pultsari9036 3 роки тому

      @Lake Before you accuse me of constructing a strawman, take a look at the text on the thumbnail of this video. "Are drones unstoppable?". I think I have made many reasonable arguments why this is not the case, yet you don't seem to acknowledge hardly any of them. Like I said, drones will be around and integrated into conventional air power via networking, but they are not going to replace fighter-bomber jets during our lifetime.
      This conversation has been getting circular. If I may I would like to accuse you too of some fallacy that I cannot prove, like you couldn't prove the one you accused me of. You seem to be so heavily invested, more likely emotionally than economically in drones being "the great equalizer" between strong and weak airforces and negating the whole power of balance, that you don't want to see the points against it. So my guess is you are ideologically against a strong air power, likely the strongest one there is i.e. NATO and just can't let go of your wishful thought that drones will negate their superiority. Drones will be bigger and better equipped in the future, and finally autonomous, but at that stage they are not really drones any more from the particular point of view we have been discussing them here; they won't be cheap and easy to produce and maintain.

    I think the biggest problem with AI-directed drones is that they have little to no ability to determine the difference between friend and foe. Sure, IFF systems may be vital in modern air-to-air combat but they have malfunctioned before even though it was never on the scale of the IFF malfunctions shown in Ace Combat 7. However, AC7 has shown that the biggest advantage humans have over drones is that they are able to adapt to IFF malfunctions while drones have no such capability. This became especially important as the conflict in the game became an absolute CF with very few people knowing who's on whose side but the drones taking this handicap especially hard. While the game may be an artificial construct, the point still stands that any belief in a "clean" war is little more than a fantasy and while drones may make it easier to kill that thing over there, human judgement is always necessary to decide whether or not you should.

    This debate about drones mirrors debates about air power before WW2. No one was yet sure how useful planes could be. Advocates talked about a future in which airpower would be indispensable. Opponents said 'maybe against weak opponents but good air defences would negate the impact'. Same thing today 'jamming or cyber or whatever are an easy fix' is claimed. People will only realise the true importance of drones the day a 1st world army is decimated by them. Just as the machinegun was not fully appreciated until british soldiers got shredded by it in WW1.

    They are changing the "morality of war"
    I will explain:
    Wars are fought with piloted planes (directly). planes drop bombs, strafe, and fight other planes. Men get hurt, killed, or injured directly. Thus, a direct link to injury is present.
    Soldiers fight personally. They get killed, injured and maimed. But, it is a personal injury.
    When you introduce an indirect method of warfare, you introduce "a video game morality". This morality breeds "I am safe from harm and injury. Thus, I am invincible and can not be harmed if my drone is shot down. I simply will "reboot and another drone will take its place.". This is what I call "video game morality". In a piloted plane, the pilot actually feels the pain and potential death. To him, morality of war is direct and painful.
    This would be like if every soldier were assigned a War bot. The soldier would not feel the pain, injury or death. The War bot would simply be "video game" - "life replaced" with another one and the soldier would not care if that one gets "killed". The soldier could then (after a long hard day on the battlefield) go back to his room, pop a fresh beer, stretch out and play Call of duty. To him the "morality and consequences of war" are nothing more than a video game.
    An excellent example is the SS and orders:
    the SS were very much part of the extermination of the Jews, poles, and "enemies of the state"
    at first, they would put them in a trench and shoot the people.
    But, this did not last long. The psychological effect directly killing people soon took its toll.
    SS Soldiers would become PTSD(d) and refuse to shoot anymore. At first, it was a small minority (quick Mil justice - shot dead SS Soldier ) happened. As said extermination continued, far too many refused, "we can not handle the psychological effect of directly killing them anymore and refuse to continue.". The Officers could not shoot an entire Company of SS Soldiers.
    So, poison gas was created. A group of SS soldiers "escorted" them into "their last and final shower on earth", closed the doors, the gas dropped, and people died.
    The gas "did the killing" and the SS were absolved of direct murder and or killing. Thus, they could go on living and not be concerned about the indirect method (the gas did the job - they only escorted them into the room and closed the doors). This gas turned out to be extremely efficient.
    The same is for drones. It is easy to "disassociate one's self from the act and psychological effect of one's actions" if one does not see the direct effect directly or remove the actual feelings attached to the act of killing.

They were faster than today's drones and could do 400 mph. If Hitler had used today's 300 mph drones, hardly any would have got through. If Mitsubishi restarted its Zero assembly line, that would be the answer to the drone problem except for the very few which can fly at 400 mph above 50,000 feet. Adding the necessary air defence to protect against drones is an added and huge expense to put in the field. Drones are primarily defensive weapons greatly increasing a countries defence. Armour is primarily offensive. Drones make it very expensive to initiate armour offences. Any offensive against a well armed drone advisory will need a good strategy to neutralize the drones first or risk having your armour units destroyed.

Remember two Syrian fighter aircrafts also downed by Turkish fighter aircrafts. If you have a doctrine that combines all of them then you can use drones to inflict heavy casualties on enemy. The Hermes 900 is a UAV that has a flight range of up to "30 hours" and can reach an altitude of up to 9,000 meters and weighs 1,180 kg. The range of the model is unlimited.
    The Hermes 450, operated so far, has an autonomy of up to "16 hours" and reached a ceiling of 5 km in altitude, its autonomy limit is much higher than the Hermes 900.

    You don't attack the drone. You attack the dance club where the drone's controllers party.

    Would it be possible to make an update to this in the Ukraine war? A short would be enough but it would be very interesting!

    Ukrainian drones made by Turkey are currently pretty effective against Russia. Videos of them showing up destroying Russian air defense in Ukraine. Of course drones alone wont be enough in this war, but again looking at how much those Turkish drones cost and their effectiveness we can conclude that warfare has changed.

    newest turkish drone ammunation has air to air capabilities. this way drones can be act like hordes and fight back against jamming.
    also turkey has awacs to commands drones from air.
    there are no surviving from drones in large areas. but i believe every country will develop 7/24 on air drone defence system in future.
    drones will fight drones on air to prevent attacks. defending from ground against air is not viable option now

    i'm not an expert at war(or even anything remotely similar), but it seems to me that when you combine different tools effectively, the result is much better than the sum of the results of using the tools separately.
